That's cheating... but still cool you can do that! Can you make Ryo use the Hazuki sword in battle as well, just like his father? =)

You can use NullDC cheater codes to give Ryo the sword from the hazuki Dojo.
Dave from Shenmue500k figured that one out. You can then call the swipe animation Ryo does when you hit the action button while holding it.

I can then assign damage counters to that animation and BAM bootleg sword fighting in FREE battle.

Doing FREE Battles on a sloped surface does have clipping issues in the game. This scene could have been removed for that reason.

From a technical standpoint, there is no motion data for any charcter besides Ryo in the map folder for Yamanose (well except for the Kitten). For the areas where there are fights there typically is a motion file for the fought character in the map folder. For example you can see the motion data for Enoki in the folder for Sakuragaoka.

Now I don't want to put this up as a reason that there is definately no chance of a fight happening in Yamanose.
The game could still pull the necessary data from some other place. I haven't dug through the code of the map to verify that. But I guess James could shed some light on that way quicker and easier then I possibly could.

Speaking about modding. It would be a cool thing to put fights in other maps. I guess you already tried that out, James? Seeing how you mention fights clipping on slopes.

In my bike mod hacking, I have come across ways of putting fights in different areas.

The key is the ECAM segments of the mapinfo files.

Once I was able to put the 80 man battle in Dobuita. But the clipping would freeze the engine randomly.

I always gave Zoltor the benefit of the doubt because there was no evidence to say he was telling the truth nor lying for some strange reason. What I always found suspicious about the whole thing is the way in which he approached the situation by assuming no-one knew about this so-called battle with unknown thugs, as if he was forcing attention on the context.

It could still be true, but judging by the lack of developments, I'm losing hope.
