I've said it before and I'll say it again, use google earth. You can find plenty of hotel locations. As for hotel reviews you can check companies like the AA. I must admit I never bother doing the research into hotels before I go, I just look at how many stars they have.

Well I wanted an advice of someone who have actually been there.
He can tell me the hotels with best locations and hotel with good prices.
That or an advice of someone who is from China would be best.
But yes I have no other choice then I will take your advice and use google earth.

There's a video of some kid skating through Kowloon Walled City before it was demolished. It was image stabilised, otherwise it would of been too hard to watch.

I wouldn't recommend that. If you care about your money, at least =]
Even though China claims to be a communictsic country, it's the most capitalistic place I've ever been to. It's all about money, money, money. If you just go to a Hotel (not a hotel chain like Holiday In) and ask for a room, you'll probably pay much more than you would with a little bit of asking-around. Good places to start are tourist-information places.

An example: When we first arrived in Guilin we walked outside the airport, waiting for the shuttle bus to Guilin City Center. While waiting, someone from the airport's tourist information offered us help in finding a hotel. Honestly, chinese people won't let go before you haven't checked out their offering (that's pretty awkward if you're european ... I think chinese people understand a "No" as a "No, but ..." And that "but" keeps them persistent :D).

Whatsoever, she told us about a hotel near the river for 200 Yuan per night. We would have to pay at the tourist information - it would be much more expensive to book the room at the hotel (that sounded a little bit implausible to us ...). Because we landed at night time, we decided to take the risk and the hotel just for one night, willingly to search for another hotel on the next day.

One hour later we arrived at the hotel and checked out the room rates. The Standard room would have cost 488 Yuan per night, more than twice as much as we've had to pay! The room was ok, so we decided to keep the room for the rest of our stay in Guilin. It was a tough job to get the room for 200 Yuan per night again, but we managed to do it.

Conclusion: I really dont know if this works everywhere in China, but you should always give it a try and ask around or listen to what people are telling you. Sometimes you have to ask by yourself, sometimes people will offer you their help. In the first moment, they don't seem to be trustable, but most of them are (but beware of too friendly people in big cities like Shanghai, they want your money, money, money =]).

OK, never trust a native in Guilin, especially if your white. Guilin is famous in most parts of China as being THE place to get mugged. As far as Hong Kong is concerned you are actually quite safe in a half decent hostel.

My advice to anyone going to Guilin is to stay with someone who speaks the language. Guilin is quite far south but you will find the language varies even from village to village. Don't expect good food there.

Not been to Shanghai since I was really young. Can't really comment on it but my friends said it's not so much money, money, money anymore. Or at least it's not as bad as Beijing.

Well I meant more someone who is from China or knows the language well.
The good thing is that a trip to China is Cheaper than one to Japan.
:) I heard that shopping in china is a lot cheaper.
But yes you are right.
China is a lot more dangerous than Japan.
Japan is just such a secure country.
also the other problem is that China is a communist country so if you get in trouble you are very fucked.

I was born in HK. I have also lived on the mainland but not for long. HK is actually a very safe place but I can't compare it to Japan. I never been there before. I know people who has passed out drunk many times on the streets and woke up with their money and everything.

You only get into problems on the mainland but even then westerners get away with all sorts most of the time.

I've got some nice pictures of Japan when I went on Holiday an for TGS. I didn't really visit the "Shenmue Locations" but a lot of the streets look similar anyway. I'll post some pics when I get back home from work.

Just because there was so many places to Visit. Kamakuru, Mount Fuji, Kyoto and the Snow Monkeys near Nagano was some of them. I done so much in 10 days, every up at the crack of dawn to travel around Japan, loved it.

Best country in the world. Met some great people and the Japanese are the friendliest people I have ever met. Some of them went out there way to help us get to our destinations because it was harder to get around outside Tokyo as there are not many signs in English.

I will be back and next time I will visit the locations in Shenmue I think.

People in HK are friendly as well. As for the mainland people vary from place to place. Some places are very ignorant. A lot of places people will watch every move you make.

TGS:
[img=http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9941/dsc00765ux.th.jpg]

Outside Shinjuku Station:

[img=http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/4660/dsc00863c.th.jpg]

This is where we were lost because the station was massive but a Japanese lady who spoke good english helped us out. She actually walked over to us asked if we were okay and helped us find the correct bus station to Mount Fuji. The chances of that happening where I live is about 1 in a 70 billion- have more chance of winning the lottery.

A shrine at Mount Fuji:

[img=http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/8589/dsc00890m.th.jpg]

It was amazing at Mount Fuji, some nice shrines and shops. Me and my mate wanted to walk to the top but it was out of season and weren't really prepared for it. We could have done it but there was no busses back and couldn't camp out. It is my mission in life to get to the peak and watch the sun rise.

More of Mount Fuji:

We also went to the Kyoto imperial palace, which was free to enter because we had our passports!

[img=http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/218/dsc00989u.th.jpg]

The Gardens were beautiful:

There is many more photos so here is a video I made with most of my Pictures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlGC_ptiCQs

I still have pictures and videos of city areas but wanted to seperate that from my images of the more rural areas. I will probs upload them to youtube sometime too.
