Not amazing, but Joseph Gordon Levitt is always worth seeing. The bad guy was pretty good too, but I have to say that just about anyone else was kind of "eh." They could have cast some of the roles a little better, and things would have been a little more engaging the whole way through. But oh well. Levitt's still great.

Kind of wish the '89 movie would have brought more of a close to the series though. I wish there could have been an official "end" of the classic Katsu Zatoichi series.

Zatoichi 89' is just great from the dialogue to action scenes and great humor, I agree though. I love the series and Shintaro Katsu is my hero, everything he does is just exudes excellence. There wasn't a close to the series but I guess its for us to ponder in our own minds. He just wanders to various villages. The "wandering blind-swordsman/masseur".

Yeah,there is a series with 26 flims; staring Shintaro Katsu.

Twenty-six!? Good god. Have you ever seen the Lone Wolf and Baby Cart series? That was around eight films I think?

I've only seen the 'Shogan Assassin' film which basically served as the abridged version of the first two films in the series. Very good film if you're into samurai, revenge stories. Also has bucket loads of gore and probably unintentional hilarious violence.

A friend of mine bought the DVD box set of the entire series, I really should get round to watching them.

Twenty-six!? Good god.

PLUS a tv series just over 100 episodes, running through the 70s. Yeah, Zatoichi is probably the most extensive film series I've ever seen. Though, to be honest, most of the movies and tv episodes run on a pretty similar formula: Zatoichi enters town/region, finds the natives being hassled by those in power, tries his best to keep his nose clean, eventually gives in and slices a wave of justice through the badguys. A little variation here and there, but it's usually a samey kind of deal. Thing is, it's also an incredibly fun formula, with an incredibly good lead actor, leading to me time and again declaring Ichi as my favorite character in anything.
I'd recommend the hell out of the series if you like Japanese swordplay movies. It's my favorite series, no doubt. Just know that, despite its length, it isn't anything particularly complex or continuous. Just a lot of good, violent, often-comical fun.
