Gui Zhang is a skilled martial artist.

Ren is a street thug who has survival skills.

I would choose Gui Zhang for a fight, Ren for a comical conversation.

Xiuying would never hook up with Ryo, or probably anybody.

Joy irritates Ryo as her personality is much to vibrant for his tastes.

Fangmei is too young.

Shenhua is more of a sister to him, as they seem to be friends only.

I would have to say Nozomi was his "True Love".

The forklift job in Shenmue wasn't exactly great pay. Look at the lunches that Ryo used to eat with Mark and the other forklift guys. And lifting crates... i'm pretty sure you could easily find a manual labour job if you wanted. What i'm really amazed at, however, is the concept of a "live in" dojo...
