Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I guess that I'm one of the few who's a bit annoyed by the estimated amount of the delay? If more unexpected things happen it could start moving beyond 2018. As soon as I saw the text in the mail I assumed some delay though.

The reason given (like GTA, RDR, Uncharted,...) sounds positive if true so the coming details will be interesting. Otherwise, for all we know they're struggling and haven't gotten much more than an area, an unfinished Ryo and Shenhua, the new guy and Fukusan who someone made by mistake :P

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I'm not excited about the delay but I'm not angry either. Shenmue is a game that shouldn't be rushed. Many of us were expecting a delay of some kind. I hope it actually comes out next year and doesn't have further delay. A delay into 2019 would anger me a little but I'm a patient person.

With this news, my expecting a Shenmue HD Collection announcement next week has dropped from 90% to 40% sure. The year delay of the third moves the burner out from under Sega's ass. They'll be in no rush to announce the HD Collection if ever now. E3 2018 now has a far better chance for that reveal.

That's never a comforting thought.

That's true, but even though I am not fully up to date with what they are doing regularly, the soundbytes coming from them have been positive, and backed up by the releases of Bayonetta and Vanquish. They have been slowly making the right calls lately.
We've all been burned by Sega before, but I'm willing to believe.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Best news since the Advanced Free Battle announcement.

I feel a bit disappointed for Biscay and the other related actors though. The delay seemed to be inevitable, I hope their trust has not been abused by the project ambition.

You always manage to find something negative, don't you? :P

Do you think Cédric would rather have a rushed, half-baked game which may sell poorly instead of a polished, well crafted Shenmue 3 with better chances of selling well? (especially if Shenmue HD comes out by the end of the year)

I prefer the expression "considering all the possibilities", even the hard ones. :)

Trust will be important for Suzuki's next projects (including Shenmue 4) and delay is a joker that should not been used twice. Announcing the game for 2018 from the very beginning would have been preferable for everyone, especially since Yu was already complaining about his lack of time last year. But I believe they had their reasons.

I remember an interview of Biscay where he was asked about the potential Yu's over-ambition regarding the budget. He's aware that giving Yu too much freedom is something not to do. But at the moment, I do think like you that everything's good. Let's turn our full attention on Shenmue remasters!

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

It was SO in the air at this point, that the majority of users are not even mad :king:
Since the announcement I always got the idea that they'd have to rush way too much to get it done in slightly more than a couple years. I'm honestly glad they're taking their time.
And I wouldn't be completely surprised if they'll have to postpone it again to 2019.
Anything more than that would surprise me, but not 2019, a grand total of 4 years for that kind of game with that kind of team behind it.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I'm not upset about it in the least, infact this announcement has really made me smile. It feels like the game is getting the proper development period that a game like Shenmue requires and it will only reap the benefits of the extra year or so.
Yu-san stating that the game has become bigger and more beautiful than he originally imagined really gave me goosebumps.

Those of you who hoped to see something to help "soften the blow" of the delay, I expect we'll now see something solid at MAGIC early next year.

This announcement also gives Sega more time to pull their fingers out of their behinds and deliver us Shenmue HD!

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I don't mind the delay at all. I want them to make a game that won't just be the third game in a trilogy that will always remain a trilogy. I want them to make a game that leads the series to a fourth installment or more if that's what it takes. If ever there was a time to get a game right it's now. So much is riding on Shenmue 3. We don't want to have another situation where we're stuck in a cave except this time it's forever.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Well, it really goes to a choice of two events; PSX 2017 or E3 2018. If they are still planning on a reveal trailer at a large show, it will be one of those unless there is another delay (hope not as 3 years is a painfully long wait as is). Assuming it comes out fall or winter of next year, those are our only two options.

My bet goes for a smattering of info and small leaks like we've had with Kickstarter backer updates followed by a proper reveal trailer for the masses at E3 2018 with a firm 2018 announcement date. That's my guess.
The only problem I see with this, is the backer demo. I think (hope?) we'll be getting it by the end of the year. They'd have to do some kind of reveal before they release that.

Maybe they could do a smaller trailer focused mainly on Bailu village and the content of the backer demo, and save the big, bombastic full reveal for later. Or they could just drop the backer demo without a trailer, which would be an interesting and mysterious way to do it. Let the demo itself be the first reveal.

Oh, I don't expect the backer demo before summer 2018 and it WILL be very small. I don't recall there ever being a playable demo of a Shenmue game as it's simply not that type of game.
Already forgot about what's shenmue?

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

All opinions are welcome, but keep insulting the development team of Shenmue when they are not here to defend themselves and you won't be around here for much longer, on top of spreading information that I can tell you right now is either very sorely mistaken on your part, or just fathomly made up by yourself in the name of trying poorly to troll.

You show up once a month and spew your negative bile all over the place which does nothing for me but make me feel sorry for you. No one agrees with you, or cares quite frankly.

I don't think I insulted any members of the development team by saying they lack the level of experience needed for a special project like Shenmue 3, especially that any kind of insult to anyone won't be something the community (including myself) would ever appreciate.
On the other hand, Neilo, which is listed as the main developer of Shenmue 3, was founded in 2010 in Japan, and since then, they only developed/released ONE rhythm mobile japan-only game (Orgarhythm was released in 2012 for PSVita and Android) Source . And you can check the full list of the games developed by Suzuki-san to know that his last console game was released in 2003 on the original Xbox; Moreover, the horrible Twitch streams done by AJ alongside many badly-photoshopped officially released images also indicate that they're not professionally done and that's not even close to the level of quality of Shenmue I and II.

I show up once a month indeed mostly alongside the monthly updates, and I try to be realistic with my opinion based on what I see instead of what I dream of, and or course you and everyone else are entitled to totally disagree with everything I said or will ever say ...

As well as What's Shenmue which has already been mentioned, there was also a Shenmue II demo released via UK Xbox magazines. It contained the game / story all the way to Queen St. So yeah, both games had demos released.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Phil.

If you looked into things a bit more (ie. the YSnet website) you'd see that they are hiring and only hiring experienced developers and those familar with UE4.
Veteran developers that Yu has hired from the AM2 development team of the past are people who I'd trust more than having some other "big company" step in and take over. These guys lived and breathed Shenmue for many years. They know Shenmue. They ARE Shenmue.

It really doesn't matter how long Suzuki has been out of the game, he's still the visionary he always was. You can tell by some of the idea's he has for Shenmue 3. Like the Rapport system; whereby Shenhua or other NPC's will be a certain proximity to or away from you depending on the level of trust. That's pretty impressive. I don't remember seeing that kind of feature in any other game to date. It's these little touches that will make Shenmue 3 as intimate and impressive as the previous instalments.

I can understand the worries you have. But when you look at things logically, you'll see that we really do have the best team and the best guys behind Shenmue 3.

Just give them the benefit of the doubt if you can't give them trust.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Right.

I am a huge avocate of communication so I am gonna try here and not get pissed off at what I am sure you would agree, is your repetitive posting on a semi regular basis where you give your opinion, which is mostly negative.

Instead of me waffling on myself, which I would be the frist to admit I am completely guilty of, I will start small. Can I ask you if there is anything positive you have an opinion of, regarding the past 2 years?

I have responses to your post, but that can come later. For now, I just want to see some positivity here from yourself, based on the assumption that the reason you are here, like the rest of us, is because at the end of it all, we have a love and a respect for this series and it's creator.

You're totally right Peter, my opinion was (and still is) mostly negative, and that makes me feel really sad and frustrated ...
Shenmue I & II not only changed me as a gamer, but also changed my entire life and my carrier as well, those two games taught me how to be as close to perfection as possible in every aspect, I appreciated how Suzuki-san back then went way beyond everyone else in terms of realism, audio/visual design, software engineering, code optimisation, etc ...
That seemed to have raised my expectations so high for Shenmue 3, that I won't feel satisfied with anything less that perfect, and I sincerely hope this is still achievable with the resources available for Shenmue 3 right now...

When the Shenmue 3 project was announced, I jumped off my couch with excitement and almost broke my leg, I backed up the project seconds after the Kickstarter page went live, and I never regretted it ...

I want Shenmue 3 to be the best game ever made, not only because it's my most anticipated game of all time, but also Shenmue 3 will most certainly determine the fate of this fantastic series, I could never forget how the commercial outcome of Shenmue I & II had affected the future of Shenmue and I don't want to ever relive that nightmare again...

I'm here simply because this Dojo is THE place to be for us diehard Shenmue fans from all around the globe, not only because I personally have a love and respect to the series and to its creator, but also because Shenmue to me is much more than the best gaming experience I have ever had, and guess what? We're finally getting a third one sometime in the future and maybe HD remastered versions of the previous ones too, which I sincerely hope it'll end up making all my negativity sound like total nonsense, and that will make me feel so happy that I was wrong all along ...

Well, there it is. gif
No offence but I think its time to see the project as realistic as possible and not always positive, when the signs (no gameplay. no ryos face, etc) are not good.
Anyway good decision I guess but also some worries. I hope the 6mill+ are enough for 3 years development for this kind of a game.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I cant say Im suprised by this at all. But this brings up a lot of questions. I understand lots of ppl want to be extra happy and supportive about this. And why wouldnt they be? It gives an huge opportunity for the team to finish the game in the best possible way. But shooting down everyone who brings up questions about the budgeting is foolish. Extra year equals one extra year worth of money. Where will they get the money? Did they have extra money put aside? Why? If not, from which areas are they going to cut or is there potential investors? If they dont have the money and their current financial trend is starting to drop(= the business is not profitable anymore), then most likely they have to act accordingly and start letting go employees. If they decrease the amount of staff how will this affect quality?
There is so many variables. This can be great news or this can be bad news. So please dont rule out people who has something else to say than " I think this is great " because nobody knows yet how this will turn out.

Certainly not. I'd held off on posting in the E3 topic, but until seeing this I was of the mindset that the December 2017 deadline could be met, and that any significant delay wouldn't make sense because of operating costs. Q3/4 2018 feels really far away, and for the first time I'm finding it hard to be patient. If the game will truly benefit from this, I can't be upset.

So the question was "shot down" and you're going to simply repeat it without addressing the points raised the last time?

Are you refering to your answer "This makes no sense."

You stated and I quote " the game is not going to suffer by taking longer. "

You have no idea what you are talking here. You dont know the facts. At this point we can even question if the project manager itself can predict accurately how their financial balance will endure. Maybe they have a way to build up a revenue we dont even know about. Who knows. But nobody in this forums can say what is fact and what is not. So stop talking like you know.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

To be honest, in hindsight, the original Dec. release date seems all the more puzzling now.

I suspect that Suzuki & co originally low-balled the backer minimum ($2M), almost expecting to make an interactive movie of sorts. The backing then quickly took a legendary turn, with the team now tasked to meet an almost impossible release date. At this point…when do you announce a delay? Certainly not towards the beginning, as the “press” would have jumped all over it.
(I can see the “Shenmue Trouble: Suzuki asks for patience (and money)” headline already.)

All in all, I’d say the timing here was as close to “perfect” as possible.

Then again, perhaps they really did try to meet this impossible release date for the longest time (sleeping at the office/ etc/ etc), before finally giving in to reason and planning ahead accordingly. Who knows.

One thing is for sure: this entire KS has been nothing short of a fascinating experiment.
Whatever happens, it’s been one hell of an exciting ride. For everyone.

…Only thing missing now is that fabled HD remaster announcement ;)

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Here is the key question:

Bigger and more beautiful than Yu anticipated, it seems he said.

From that, can we extrapolate that maybe features or areas that weren't initially reached are now going to be in the game? Will they move goals down that weren't achieved and cross off those that may have become possible with current funds? Exciting thoughts.

I don't remember when and which exact words Yu said this but if the kickstarter had earned a little more than 2 million only, Shenmue 3 would have been closed to an interactive movie, or a very linear game at least. Way before this, releasing Shenmue III as a comic was even a possibility.

I remember this as well; we certainly dodged a bullet with the $2M 'game'.

A shenmue comic...Jesus...times were certainly desperate for a while.

I briefly mentioned that I got some interesting "merchandise" heading my way during the last episode of Peter's Shenmue II stream and well, it finally arrived today.

I was looking for info and pictures on this machine from time to time but never found much solid stuff.
About 3 weeks ago I searched again and found some pictures that lead to an eBay auction that was still running. Naturally I didn't hesitate to buy this thing. It's about the nerdiest Shenmue thing to do but it is a cool item related to the game and a quite nice looking machine. Once I have everything up and running well and some more info I'll demonstrate the thing in a video.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

At first I was disappointed with this news as we were getting the game in about six months but you know what, this is much more a good thing then it is bad. I was thinking it would be delayed until Feb/March 2018 so my jaw kind of dropped when Yu Suzuki said 'second half of 2018' but he gives a very good and positive reason.

The game will be bigger, better and more polished, sure it's quite a delay but that time will spend in making the game we all want and what Yu Suzuki wants. We want it more like the first to games and for it to be different as well. It was so satisfying to hear that he's now able to make the game more like his sixteen year long dream vision and his other quote 'In many ways, the game has become bigger and more beautiful than I initially expected' was a beautiful thing to hear. Every Shenmue fan wants to hear that. I'm pleased for Yu Suzuki that he has found out he can do more with the game, with new possibilities and with the technology. Now that the game won't be out for quite awhile and some time next year, this gives more time for Shenmue HD to come out. I personally don't see it happening at E3 but that doesn't mean it won't ever be.

We have a pretty long road ahead of us guys but in the end I think and hope Shenmue III will be worth it. We want the best version of the game for it to be a success, not for it to be a failure and for the series to go into development hell again. We want to see how the story finishes and for that we want to see Yu Suzuki's game and if we can 'beautiful' just like the first two games. I'm liking the nice and positive reactions of the delay by the way. It's goes to show how much people love Shenmue as a community. We did save Shenmue after all.

How good is it gonna be when we finally see a trailer of Shenmue 3 and gameplay? The future is bright I hope.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Surpirise, surprise. ;-) Pretty much everything I wanted to say has been said already. No hard feelings about the delay as far as I'm concerned. I hope they do have the money to pay for the delay and hope they'll put the extra time to good use.

The one thing I want to stress however, is this: Whatever YS Net do, they should meke a really big effort to finish this game in 2018. The one thing they must absolutely not do is causing a second delay. If that happens, the media will tear it to shreds and also the PS4 will probably be on its way out in 2019.

All Sony consoles had something like a 6 or 7-year life-span. PS1 from 1994 to 2000, PS2 from 2000 to 2006, PS3 from 2006 to 2013. That means, if Sony will make a PS5, it's probably gonna come out in 2019 or 20.

I don't want to see another Shenmue game coming out on a dying system, so I really hope YS Net will get their act together and release S3 in 2018.

Re: Shenmue Collections & Merchandise

That's right up my street. Very cool indeed. If I had one i'd do as LGS suggested and reproduce a tape from the game. What's the model number? i can't make it out.
It's TRQ-298. Don't worry, I already made some plans what to do with it when I bought it. I fixed an issue with the play button and it runs pretty well for such an old machine that was advertised as untested.
