Re: Shenmue Postmortem Discussion

This was announced as a postmortem and that's what it was. If you go to a taco joint and they're out of tacos, you have the right to get mad. But it'd be pretty silly to complain about them not selling oysters, wouldn't it?

Suzuki shared some pretty interesting facts, such as huge portions of Shenmue being procedurally generated or the early prototype he talked about. Personally I'm very satisfied with how it went, from the stream quality to the translation, to the the content which was what it was supposed to be.

Re: Shenmue Postmortem Discussion

The postmortem itself was very enjoyable, I found myself laughing as Yu reminisced about his experience in China and debugging the game, I'd be interested in watching more of this. The Q&A was pretty much what I expected, as a Shenmue fan I'm obviously disappointed he evaded the Shenmue 3 question but it's hardly surprising.

Re: Shenmue Postmortem Discussion

Yu Suzuki's answer to the Shenmue 3 question wasnt just "dot dot dot".. he said basically "He wants to make it, but he doesnt know right now" but under such a mumbled voice the translator obviously knew this question would come up too that she decided to be a b*** about it and not translate it.

As for the presentation.. it was great. We even got a spoiler in there.
Does anyone have that screen grab of all the different plot points on the China map?

As for the rest of the Q&A session.. mother of GOD.. yes these are Game Developers asking the questions but are they that out of the loop as to not ask some more pressing questions? Those are the kind of questions you'd get from non-Shenmue fans. Perhaps people that played the game for 10 minutes 14 years and decided to attend the conference.

A scene I've never seen before

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0szsnG9Xl4 go to 2:41 Ryo gets his money taken after getting beatdown by some Mad angels thugs. I think this fight happens on the first full day of work, if anyone wants to test it out.

Does this happen in the English dub?

I love how I'm still finding out new things about this game after 15 years.

Re: New GDC Plot image discussion *Spoilers*

Thanks Ziming, its better now,

I think its clear his route:
Japan -> Hong Kong -> Kowloon -> Suzhou -> Guilin -> Xian -> Luoyang -> Cangzhou -> ? -> Beijing -> ?
I guess we now know where should Ryo go after Guilin...
The chapter in kowloon seems a little bit off with the train, maybe he was supossed to cach the train to Suzhou, was it a cut chapter?
I still cant understand where that last location is even with the high resolution but really doesnt seems a famous place, but I have no idea...

Its possbile they changed lots of little things in the story by now even thought most of it seems coerent.
Is also possible they ended with 16 chapters after rethinking the Story from VF to Shenmue.

Re: Suzuki and Cerny @ Gamelab Tokyo!

Maybe... just maybe ... he actually wanted to make these games. As he keeps saying, he doesn't really play video games, so probably doesn't realise it's some surprising, underwhelming letdown for gamers. And even if he did know, then why would he even give a fuck? He obviously has the creative freedom to branch out into areas that he finds interesting, and can even use IPs he helped create to promote said games.

Other than the lack of media coverage he receives for all things not Shenmue, Suzuki has it pretty good.

Ren, killed by Ryo's hands?

http://cdn.escapistmagazine.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/698/698943.jpg

So, how about these concept artworks? I haven't been this interested nor pissed off in a long time. I'm vehemently against spoilers, yet hungry for even a shard of new Shenmue information. It's a shame we have to see such major spoilers before playing the game (IF we ever do see it in action), but it's oh so intriguing. On the bright side however, these concepts may slightly differ from the final version. Even if they don't, they're vague enough that much is still left to be discovered.

On to the topic at hand... I posted about this on the 500K Facebook page as well, but I figured it was time to reappear on the Dojo because this theory is worth spreading. My theory is that a deceased Ren is being carried off by Akira (Ryo) in the 10th concept image. More importantly, Ren has been killed by the hands of his friend, Akira. Firstly, at the top left corner of image 9, that's an alternately dressed Ren. In the background, a horde of people appear to be charging after Akira for an epic battle. Is Ren leading these people into battle, or is he there for Akira? Remember the concept art of Ren on a horse? It's possible that the Chiyoumen could entice Ren with promises of riches if he joins them. I would say he's there to support Akira, but who knows. They succeed in this battle apparently, defeating Lan Di as Yu Suzuki so wonderfully spoiled for us. That's assuming Lan Di didn't already meet his demise long before this scene.

http://cdn.escapistmagazine.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/698/698955.jpg

So what next? As you can see by the map, this epic battle depicted in image 9 occurs somewhere in Western China. In concept image 10, Akira is holding someone's apparent lifeless body. I'm convinced by the clothing that it's Ren as seen in image 9, minus the bandana. If you'll notice, Akira is now ironically wearing a white headband (to honor his former friend?). What happened? If the epic battle is over and Ren didn't perish there, what killed him in the following chapter 10 that appears to take place far away near Beijing (?). I'm thinking after Lan Di's defeat, Ren and Ryo now have access to both mirrors, and Ren's desire to unlock the treasures of the Qing Dynasty overcomes him. According to Master Chen, there will be trouble if those two mirrors come together. Whether that's in the form of a mythical beast resurrecting on Earth, or that's simply a metaphor for something else very grim, I think it's something that needs to be avoided. Akira may have no choice but to stop Ren, which is why he's still honoring his friend with the headband, and the fact that he's clasping his body doesn't signify a hate-filled battle.

If you'll remember, there's a flashback scene in Shenmue I where little Ryo gets into a fight with a friend at school. Iwao tells him, "A friend you can trust is a true friend indeed." I believe this flashback has a lot of significance, since everyone warns Ryo that Ren isn't exactly trustworthy. It shows in his incessant talk of money, and his giddiness towards the Qing Dynasty treasure. It's obvious that Ryo and Ren have grown closer by the end of Shenmue II, but Ren still may not be the most honest and loyal friend in the world. Thoughts?

Re: Shenmue – discovering the Sega classic 14 year too late

The visuals, while perhaps not quite cutting edge, were impressive for 1999. Yes, it’s full of graceless facial animations, despite benefitting from some primitive motion-capture work, and the overall aesthetic quality is nowhere close to the standard that the market-exploding PlayStation 2 would begin to introduce, just months after Shenmue’s arrival.

What the fuck ? The PS2's graphics were AWFUL at launch. They didn't have anything that could possibly compare to the likes of Shenmue or Soul Calibur for at least two years in. Their launch titles looked far worse than Dreamcasts launch titles had that were a full year older. Some people just got drunk on the Sony koolaid those days.

Discussion from various users at the Shenmue 500k group. They compared it to older existing trademarks and they do not match up.
Objection! That's not a decisive evidence. A mere discussion with some members of the Shenmue 500k group, with questionable skills of analysis and/or experience on the subject, can not be accepted as a conclusive proof by this court. Your Honor, I suggest that we must penalize prosecutor Ziming.

In case anyone is still wondering about the mysterious downtime of shenmue.com. I've been informed that some of Sega's servers have been attacked about 10 days ago and a lot of their sites are down right now.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fsega.jp%2Ftopics%2F140512_0%2F

They don't actually list shenmue.com but it's easy to conclude that it's affected by the server attack just like the other sites.

Re: Dirty Naoyuki

Such a misleading title btw. I thoug&t you were going to analyze the depths of Naoyuki's psyche based on his infinite love for his motorcycle. He even pisses of Ichiro by that. Only Ryo lends him an ear and endures Naoyuki's blabbering. That is maybe why he lends him that motorcycle.

Now back to topic. I too have that problem sometimes and I think that it has become difficult to find the one right video on Ziming's channel that has like far more than a thousand. Actually that is amazing, congrats.

Yeah it's easy for the doubters because we've got no concrete evidence and it's somehow cool to be stoic and deny dreams. But the second an announcement is made all the skeptics will be shouting "Shaaaamuuuuu treeeeeee" like the rest of us. We just have to be there with a big piece of humble pie to shove down their throats like we've ate at every major video game convention for the past 10 years. Just let us be hopeful. We're adults, we can take the disappointment.

We are pretty sure that they were working on it. So who knows? Maybe they had to change direction with the release of the next gen consoles?

Re: Shenmue Collections

So after doing some digging online I found this original shirt at a store, and only for $12. Score!

http://i.imgur.com/pX3SFPV.jpg

I got it in the mail the other day, or rather, I got an empty envelope. Somehow, incomprehensibly, the sender did not seal the envelope. The adhesive on the flap wasn't even pulled back. It was a gaping, empty envelope.

I managed to find out through the postal carrier that it came to the facility like this, and after speaking to his advisor, was told he had to deliver it anyway.

Well, that's a first. And a huge drag because I've never seen this shirt for sale before, especially at such a sweet price.

On a separate note, I never got around to picking up of any of Insert Coin's Shenmue items. Last week I saw a shirt was available from their site which I ordered, only to be notified days later it was a mistake and they're all out of stock.

It's been a bad week for collecting. I guess that makes me (puts on sunglasses), shirt out of luck.

Help induct Shenmue into The Library of Congress!

http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/warren-spector-induct-shenmue-into-the-library-of-congress-game-canon-saveshenmue?recruiter=54807131&utm_campaign=twitter_link_action_box&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf-MK4599A8

What is Shenmue?

Shenmue was a video game created by SEGA Programmer Yu Suzuki. It was developed during the production cycles of both the Sega Saturn and The Sega Dreamcast and it was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000.

Why is Shenmue Important?

It was notable for influencing many aspects of modern video games. It was influential in the use of Quick-Time Events, an aspect later seen in Resident Evil 4 and Heavy Rain. It was a game that preceeded Grand Theft Auto 3 in using full-3D free-roaming and real-life weather effects, and allows in-game interactions that weren't possible before. It was one of first true cinematic experiences in modern games, with an amazing story that attracts a huge fanbase in both Japan and The West during the time/

Despite the influence Shenmue had in modern gaming, the franchise remains dormant after the end of the Dreamcast and the lack of sales in Shenmue 2 in Xbox. It's been 14 years since the first Shenmue game and 12 years since Shenmue 2, and yet there has yet to be a re-release of the first 2 games in digital marketplaces (Steam/Playstation Network/XBox Live/GoG) nor has Shenmue 3 ever been announced by Sega or any developer/publisher in the last decade. And thus, we believe that Shenmue is in the risk of being forgotten and ignored by modern gaming culture.

And thus, we believe that Shenmue deserves to be preserved in order to remain remembered by the video game industry, and we believe that the best place for Shenmue to belong is in the Game Canon of United States The Library of Congress.

What is The Game Canon?

The Game Canon is a list of video games to be considered for preservation by the Library of Congress. The creation of this list is "an assertion that digital games have a cultural significance and a historical significance."

The current list of video games being preserved by the Library of Congress under The Game Canon is as followed:

-Spacewar!
-Star Raiders
-Zork
-Tetris
-SimCity
-Super Mario Bros. 3
-Civilization I/II
-Doom
-Warcraft series
-Sensible World of Soccer
