Re: Wii U

People keep slamming this thing for specs. Get's me thinking because the PS3 & 360 are still top of the line specs all these years? No. The games kept people interested. Then these people so obsessed with specs and want top of the line then won't admit it's now next gen and want to cling to the 360 & PS3...you know the systems with 6 year old tech. Then they say well they were top of the line in 2005! Yeah well my 386 PC from the 80's was top of the line back then also. S0 was my N64 in 1996 and Xbox in 2001. So ?

Re: Wii U

Sounds like a pretty unenthralling launch, both hardware and game wise.

Bring me back to 9/9/99.
I been reliving the DC launch last week or so because I'm that nerdy. Reading the mags playing some Shenmue then playing the hoard of Demo discs. My fanboyism for the DC has led me to always be amazed how awesome the thing is. So fucking ahead of it's time.

I hope for Ryo to win but if he has to lose let it be against Segata Sanshiro who's a worthy contender. He did after all sacrifice himself so Sega could release the Dreamcast.

Re: Wii U

Tex Mex makes everything better. You just made me hungry for some enchiladas.

But yeah, as strong as consoles are now, there's nothing holding anything back from advancement now. The real issue is just more competent use of what's currently available. Almost anything can be done with what we already have. I honestly don't know what people are expecting with the next generation.

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

Just out of curiosity, what would you do with Connor to make him more palatable, or more true to his background?
I'm not asking in a snide way. I just want to hear it from someone who actually knows and understands the culture personally. It's easy for someone like me to say "he should be more charming" or "he should be funnier," but it's kind of a shallow bit of input compared to an actual cultural perspective.

I mean 99% of the time we're being called Indians (obviously we're not from India) or Native Americans (we lived here waaay before Americo Vespucci was even a gleam in his pappy's eye)
To be fair, I use the term "Indian" as a very simple, broad reference term, in the same way I'd call white people "white people" (we're not literally white) or hispanics "hispanics" (a term derived from a country that many people -- in the US at least -- who belong to that ethinicity know little of and/or have no ties to).
It's just a word. As much as I agree with you that the various tribes situated on this continent all have very different, unique cultures to eachother, I don't see it as entirely unreasonable to have an encompassing term to describe them. No more unreasonable than "whites," "blacks," "Europeans," "Asians," or "Hispanics" at least.

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

Yea, I like it alot, I just like the Ezio games better. It just comes down to being alittle unhappy with where things are headed more then disliking this game specifically.

Absolutely. It's a very well-made game, certainly still worthy of the Assassin's Creed series. There are just a number of detractors, most of which (for me, at least) stem from having played and loved the preceding three games as much as I did. I now totally get how Segata can practically tear a game to shreds with various complaints, but still love it regardless.
Still Assassin's Creed, and it's still completely worthwhile.

Re: Assassins Creed Series

With all my complaints about Connor's voice actor, I thought I'd look around for actors who I think would have done a better job. Obviously he'd have to be Native (is that a less insulting term? More descriptive, rather than being an inaccurate branding...).
After a bunch of searching, I quite like this guy. Eric Schweig.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHfKBKIDjZ0

Might seem a little old (I want to say he's in his 40s...) but I saw videos of him from the early 90s too, and his voice was about the same, so he could reasonably pull off a 20-something I think. But besides that, he's just got a much deeper voice, likely much more capable of actually being commanding (which is kind of an important quality to the role) than the actor they eventually used for Connor.
And imagining it, I think even with the same exact script, his line delivery would come off as far less-annoying than the one they ended up going with. He wouldn't sound like a mopey kid reciting ideals, but rather a mature adult fighting for a cause. I might still have a problem with the character himself being less-fun than Ezio, but at least the voice would be better.

Too bad they can't re-record everything and patch it into the game.

Re: Assassins Creed Series

They might be able to improve him, if they wanted to use him again. But it would take a lot of work to make the transition smooth, from him being... the way he is , into someone more likable. It would take an awful lot.
I'd prefer if they just move on to a new character. Or re-visit someone from the past.

And the series can go as long as they have good ideas for it. Sales and commercialism and whatever else aside, it's a series primarily built around creating alternate world history. And with a setup like that, they could literally use any point in time using almost any culture they want.
And they seem to love going off the beaten path the most; the Middle East during the Crusades, Renaissance Italy, Ottoman-ruled Constantinople... even the American Revolution is pretty far out there for an action/adventure game these days. There are almost unlimited options for them in expanding the Assassin's Creed series.
In my eyes, at this very moment, in the mood I'm in right now... I really don't want the series to ever end. As long as they keep the story canon intact without punching holes in what's already been established, I'd be happy to explore more and more cultures and time periods with the AC series. It has a great kind of formula to it that allows a lot of leeway for introducing new elements and features, depending on each individual game's subject matter.

Brothaman, why do the NY Jets suck a sloppy dick so hard?

Good question. Looks like they have gotten stale. Time to blow up and rebuild.

Was I wrong to be violent towards him?

Probably. I'd say making someone "bleed all over his snapback and hightops" just because they were (admittedly rudely) helping themselves to some chicken your fridge, is a major overreaction. Having a word with him probably would have sufficed.

Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Jay-Z wants.

Re: Assassins Creed Series

My order of Alamut from Amazon just shipped. Apparently this was pretty much Patrice Desilets direct inspiration for coming up with the story for Assassin's Creed. The mantra "Nothing is True, everything is permitted," comes, word for word, from this novel. Feedback on it seems to be pretty divided based on different interpretations. Really interested to finally see what it's like.

Re: What Game/Games Are You Currently Playing?

Just played all the way through Mirror's Edge in a single sitting (not difficult; it's pretty short).
The notable thing about it though, is that I did the whole thing without shooting even a single enemy. Doesn't sound like much at first, but go ahead and actually try it sometime. The last few levels have some pretty crowded action scenes, and isolating enemies to go hand-to-hand with them gets difficult as hell.
Feeling oddly proud about it right now.

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

Dragon Age III might now be a next gen title.

Dragon Age III: Inquisition is now reportedly targeting next-generation consoles, according to the LinkedIn page of a Level Designer at EA Shanghai that states "the scope of DAIII has been changed" or in this case "chaged", according to the typo-riddled post.

"Scope of the DAIII has been chaged [sic], which will target next gen platform [sic] and will be postpone [sic] to 2014," reads the LinkedIn profile of Level Designer, Tao Gu. Tellingly, as noted by Superannuation in his section on Kotaku, the official announcement press release from September, neglected to mention platforms, which could point to EA planning a next-gen launch for Dragon Age III.

It could be that the claims in the LinkedIn resume may be somewhat lost in translation however - which also explains the errors - and could instead be referring to the release being postponed from fiscal year 2013 to fiscal year 2014, placing Dragon Age III in an autumn 2013 slot.

Until EA offers a confirmation either way, we'll take all of this with the usual pinch of sodium chloride, better known as salt.

It doesn't matter if it's EA, Sega, Capcom or others. There almost seems to be a widespread conspiracy this generation to shit all over the fans as much as possible. And they all chalk up their failures to piracy and the economy. Society seems to largely be all about how effectively one deflects blame onto others while never taking any personal responsibility on ones own.

Re: Splinter Cell Series

The highlights are Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory (best in the series), and both versions of Double Agent. The first was the last I went on, and just couldn't get into it because it was obviously too stripped down for me to enjoy.

Pandora Tomorrow is basically a greatly enhanced version of the first, introduced a hell of a lot (from what I can remember), and I have fond memories of it. The only thing is that I only played it once, so it may not be as good as I remember.

Chaos Theory is still regarded amongst the fans as the definitive Splinter Cell game. It's almost flawless, and I can honestly say that I've never played a better stealth game. It is geniuine out and out stealth. Unless you want to play on easy, in which case you can just go round poppin peeps for jokes. Still, it has great levels, great gadgets, and you can play through it however you like.

Double Agent kinda divided opinion, but I loved it. On the Xbox/PS2 it was more akin to Chaos Theory, and was a good game. Not as good as the 360 version or Chaos Theory, but it was still good. Never completed it though. Dunno why, I just stopped playing. I think it was around the time I got bored of games though and sold em all. The one on the 360 though was fucking immense. If they took that, Chaos Theory, and just mashed em up, I woulda paid full price for a yearly iteration. No doubt. Sadly though, they went in a completely different direction...

Conviction was a total blunder. Would've been a good game in it's own right, but as a Splinter Cell game it was awful. Too much emphasis on action and not enough on stealth. Would've worked a hell of a lot better as a brand new IP, or if it was a Bourne game. I'm still kinda mourning the original version, which seemed like it was going to play half-way between traditional Splinter Cell and Hitman. Woulda been fucking awesome. As usual though, Ubisoft made a critical error.

If you're after the story though, you'd probably be best sticking to this gen's Double Agent and Conviction. Story's minimal in the others and takes a huge backseat to the gameplay. It's always "foreign terrorist is a threat, get in there and gather intel whilst neutralising the enemy". Basic stuff, but the games are all the better for it. Double Agent's story was great, imo, but Conviction tried to be a Hollywood blockbuster too much. Still iritates me. The "twists" were predictable and kinda shat all over all the good that Double Agent did. Hell, everything about Conviction shat all over Double Agent (in the bad way)

But yeah, it's definitely a series to get into. Got fucking brilliant multiplayer modes, regardless of which one you buy.

Re: Assassins Creed Series

See, this is what pisses me off about games. They're products. And as products, the dev studios and publishers have a responsibility to make sure there are as few or little defects as possible, and to later iron out any other bugs/issues that come to light.

Instead of regulating content, more emphasis should be put on regulating the development process itself. If I'm to pay full retail price for a game, only to be told "sorry, you can't progress anymore coz you spoke to NPC 2 before NPC 1" or "nah, you can't access any features of your game coz we're doing 'maintenence' work on the server", then I want something done about it.

Be it money back, money off future products, or direct assistance that will categorically lead to a perfect solution, this should be expected and enforced. If I buy my nephew a toy and the cables that connect the batteries to the speaker fry, I expect the manufacturer to refund me in full and send me a new one, and they'd have to comply with that (well, they would if I pushed em enough which usually doesn't take much from me)

The point is though that developers, publishers, and indeed the console companies themselves should be pulling out all the stops in order of good customer service. It seems to be completely lost on the video game industry, and it's something that needs to change. Sure, it'd be a massive pain in the arse for them, but we as the consumers deserve that kinda guarantee. Not "sorry, but it costs too much to give you a patch, you'll have to make do", I want to be able to use the product I've bought with my fucking money.

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

To be fair, here's a list of RPG cliches you can use to counterbalance statements made on the previous page.

1. Sleepyhead Rule
The teenaged male lead will begin the first day of the game by oversleeping, being woken up by his mother, and being reminded that he's slept in so late he missed meeting his girlfriend.
2. "No! My beloved peasant village!"
The hero's home town, city, slum, or planet will usually be annihilated in a spectacular fashion before the end of the game, and often before the end of the opening scene.
3. Thinking With The Wrong Head (Hiro Rule)
No matter what she's accused of doing or how mysterious her origins are, the hero will always be ready to fight to the death for any girl he met three seconds ago.
4. Cubic Zirconium Corollary
The aforementioned mysterious girl will be wearing a pendant that will ultimately prove to be the key to either saving the world or destroying it.
5. Logan's Run Rule
RPG characters are young. Very young. The average age seems to be 15, unless the character is a decorated and battle-hardened soldier, in which case he might even be as old as 18. Such teenagers often have skills with multiple weapons and magic, years of experience, and never ever worry about their parents telling them to come home from adventuring before bedtime. By contrast, characters more than twenty-two years old will cheerfully refer to themselves as washed-up old fogies and be eager to make room for the younger generation.
6. Single Parent Rule
RPG characters with two living parents are almost unheard of. As a general rule, male characters will only have a mother, and female characters will only have a father. The missing parent either vanished mysteriously and traumatically several years ago or is never referred to at all. Frequently the main character's surviving parent will also meet an awkward end just after the story begins, thus freeing him of inconvenient filial obligations.
7. Some Call Me... Tim?
Good guys will only have first names, and bad guys will only have last names. Any bad guy who only has a first name will become a good guy at some point in the game. Good guys' last names may be mentioned in the manual but they will never be referred to in the story.
8. Nominal Rule
Any character who actually has a name is important in some way and must be sought out. However, if you are referred to as a part of a posessive noun ("Crono's Mom") then you are superfluous.
9. The Compulsories
There's always a fire dungeon, an ice dungeon, a sewer maze, a misty forest, a derelict ghost ship, a mine, a glowing crystal maze, an ancient temple full of traps, a magic floating castle, and a technological dungeon.
10. Luddite Rule (or, George Lucas Rule)
Speaking of which, technology is inherently evil and is the exclusive province of the Bad Guys. They're the ones with the robots, factories, cyberpunk megalopolises and floating battle stations, while the Good Guys live in small villages in peaceful harmony with nature. (Although somehow your guns and/or heavily armed airships are exempted from this.)

Click link below to read the rest of the super long list:

I like both RPGs and this list so I hope you'll enjoy it as well.

Max Payne 3 was different in compared to the theme, at first it was a turn off, but then I realized, it's different, but it doesn't make it bad. I enjoyed it.

Yea, the things that make it good, are kind of series trademarks, things its pretty much always had, while the things that (to me) were not so good, fall almost completely on Dan Houser and the fact that he thinks he's Truman Capote.

The script screams Houser and someone needs to tell him his not as good a story teller as he thinks he is. The game misses Sam Lake.

Despite the tissy fit two people had in this topic about something similar. AXM got me to think of games I bought only released in 2012. Now I bought well over maybe 100 games this year but most were either retro or a couple years old...or just last year. I got my 360 in spring and PS3 in october. So not as many 2012 games but there is a few next year. For just new games I will agree with AXM is a was a good year in that regard.
