Re: I'd love to start ShenmueII but I have a problem/questio

Just burn a PAL and an NSTC copy of S2 disc one n check like that. Personally though I'd skip the DC version and get the Xbox version. No continued save file, but English dub > Japanese w/subtitles.

I don't know if it's meant to be a joke or not but either way he's right. The English voices kick ass and have way more charm than the Japanese ones. Wanna get into a Shenmue lull? Well then play it in English yo! It's awesome.

Shenmue Meme depository thread

Ok so ive been thinking about this for awhile now and finally decided to execute on it. Yes I know ive been going Meme happy lately. That was just the start of it.
Inspired by the likes of Sir Yokosuka Martian with his Shenmue meme's, I thought it would be great if we can all come together in good intentions and make fun of Shenmue, ourselves and Sega/Yu Suzuki.

Shall I begin? Yes I shall.
Apologies to those that don't "get it". This thread wasn't made for you.
Thanks to those that choose to contribute other works of art to this thread. Your donations go towards no starving children or any good causes what so ever. Only to our cheap sense of humor and bucket of tears.

Right away, my "in game" Shenmue ones arent as good as my IRL Shenmue 3/Sega ones.
I hope someone else can contribute more of those.
I feel this series has alot of material to be used.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show On The 2nd/3rd Of Ma

A second phase was to begin last year. Or perhaps its being developed for the western devices. Either way, its another opportunity to question Suzuki and get a yearly update on anything Shenmue related. If we could get some Italian fans, or journalists to ask questions, that would be great. Id especially like someone to push him hard on the Kickstarter idea. To simplify things, if its all about the money, then i would honestly believe that a Shenmue Kickstarter would be one of the biggest gaming Kickstarters so far.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

2nd part of my videos, the most interesting I believe:

http://youtu.be/8zbEmRLrhJE
Thank you for the videos. I'll summarize what Yu Suzuki said about Shenmue in Japanese as directly as possible. So, forgive me if some part would not sound natural for English.

*He named Virtua Fighter as the most memorable game of all his games, for he had to go through various hardships while making it. And, he added "Shenmue as well" at the end of the answer.

*He admitted that he regrets Shenmue III hasn't been made yet.

*He has no concrete plans for the next generation consoles, but he'd like to do something for them.

*About "the crowd-funding," he plainly said "there's such possibility," showing no particular interest.

*He wants to make Shenmue III for sure, if a good partner is found. He used the same phrase twice; "if circumstances allow." He's glad that French fans are still talking about Shenmue a lot.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

I think what was the main driver of the losses in the chart above is that they were a console manufacturer in the years with the big losses and started to turn it around after exiting the console business (which was bleeding money). I don't think you can say that Shenmue was the main reason for those losses. It may have have been a part, but not the main driver. I think we all understand that Shenmue came out on a console that was on its last legs, and that Shenmue II never had a chance. I think it is crazy to think that this game wouldn't sell at this point if it were made for PS4, Wii-U and/or the next XBox. They just can't make the same mistake and release it on the current gen which will probably disappear in the next few years.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Hi Shenmue fans !
Let me clarify this for you. After a travel of 1200km made just to meet Yu, I was in Monaco this weekend, where I met Richard ( rdk_nl ) from this board. He filmed me when I asked this question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p3PjvKA7m0 that was misinterpreted since...

The question was " If Mr. Suzuki ends up being unable to find the financial resources or the good circumstances to develop Shenmue 3, would it be possible to him to decide to finish the story as an Anime in 3D, or even cheaper : as a book ".

His answer was, if I can relate to the translator (really not sure about that) : " Maybe, it's a possibility... Even in that form, I would like to make some more Shenmue ".

2 things :

1. With the conference translation, I still don't know if Yu Suzuki means that "Even in that form...some more Shenmue" means : "If I wanted to do it, I would not make one episode, but a series of anime or books" or "If I chose to release Shenmue on those medias, I would still want to release more Shenmue as a videogame". Maybe one of you japanese speaking fans might translate Yu's answer there, it would be really nice ;-) .

2. I never said anything about a "manga", I spoke about a book (refering in french to the word "romancé" that relates to a novel, a written adaptation of the original script). I hope it's been well translated to Yu Suzuki. It's that french journalist who made the connection between an Anime and a manga book, not me.

Let's hope we'll have something concrete in the near future... Thank you !
Lucky you for having been there. Here's the direct translation of the Q&A in Japanese:

The translator: "Instead of a video game, will there be any chance that you depict the story of Shenmue 3 in other forms, like movie or novel?"

Yu Suzuki: "there will be such possibilities, I think. Even in such forms I want to do something related to Shenmue."

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

This is just a tidbit about Yu Suzuki while he was in Monaco.
According to the following facebook page in Japanese, Yu-san took a tour of Côte d'Azur on March 1st.

http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?id=208376462514654&story_fbid=568956586456638

http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af167/Kiyuu/Monaco2013_2.jpg
Yu-san with Go Nagai, a famous animator, and the tour guide

As he wanted to stroll some old village with an ambience that would be suitable for a game, the guide took him to Dolceacqua . He liked the village very much and took a lot of pictures. Some day, we might stroll an old village like this in some video game. ;-)

Re: Shenmue Re-texturing in HD

Maybe, maybe...
but:
- I don't think there's really will be big difference at real Dreamcast (probably only on extremly close-up scenes)
- Texture file size will be increased, so after all you also need to fit it on CD-R somehow, if you gonna play on real hardware of course ;-)
- also there is chance of glitches, bugs, lags etc. who knows..
- yep, there's reaaaly alot of work.
Anyway, i just tested on Shenmue 2 Ryo model( NullDC, 1600x900)
I replaced this http://www.adslclub.ru/upload/img/2013-03/10-18412411539.png to this(I got it from Shenmue passport) http://www.adslclub.ru/upload/img/2013-03/10-18435574064.png and the result is below, don't forget to zoom:

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Here a video of the complete conference of the Sunday March 3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il8bSiWu_CA

Thank you for the video. Now that I can hear the Q&A part clearly, I've fixed the inaudible part in my translation.

Can you please add time stamps to the duration of each Shenmue question.
Here's the translation of the Shenmue related Q&A:

21:24-TR: What is the most memorable game to you?
21:29-YS: Every game is memorable to me. But, Virtua Fighter is the most memorable as it was
the hardest game to make, having had to go through various hardships. Shenmue as well.

24:01-TR: Is there any regrets?
24:04-YS: Ah... I hate this (kind of question.) Not having been able to make Shenmue III yet, of course.

24:43-TR: Do you have any plan or project for the next-generation consoles?
24:52-YS: I don't have any concrete plans, but I'd like to do something for them.

25:23-TR: What do you think about using the service like crowd-funding, such as Kickstarter?
25:33-YS: There's such possibility, I think.
(Here, the translator took the liberty of connecting the answer of YS with Shenmue III, and the MC got excited.)
15:47-YS: That was a leading question, wasn't it?

26:06-TR: Perhaps you've already been asked this a lot, but everybody wants to know it. How is Shenmue III
going at the moment?
26:17-YS: I want to make it for sure, if a good partner is found.
26:30-YS: If the circumstances allow, I want to make it.
26:41-TR: Everybody wants to help you in anyway.
26:45-YS: Thank you. Merci beaucoup.

26:51-YS: May I speak a little here? French fans, especially, have been caring about Shenmue a lot and
always ask me about Shenmue III. I'm very glad about it.
27:18-YS: I sincerely want to make it, if circumstances allow.

36:50-TR: Now, there's a rumor that Shenmue I or II will be playable soon by downloading with PSN or Xbox...
37:06-YS: Where is it from?
37:10-TR: Huh? He (the questioner) says so.
37:15-YS: Well, I don't get it. Every year a rumor says Shenmue III is coming. I wonder who is making it.

42:24-TR: Do you have a plan to make Shenmue HD?
42:50-YS: The license of Shenmue I and II belongs to SEGA. Now that I've left SEGA, it's not my decision,
but SEGA's, to remake and sell them like that. It'd be possible for SEGA, I guess.
43:27-YS: I could make anything related to Shenmue series, though, by getting the license from SEGA,
if they say OK.

45:10-TR: Instead of a video game, will there be any chance that you depict the story of Shenmue 3
in other forms, like movie or novel?
45:24-YS: There will be such possibilities, I think. Even in such forms I want to do something related to Shenmue.

Re: GDC manager tweet rumors Shenmue 3 for PS4.

Yes, that is fair enough - that the WiiU could easily be just as viable an option for S3 as PS4, albeit with some quibbles.

It is not just about the controller/control modalities of the WiiU. Any games that come out on WiiU need to be fundamentally designed to incorporate, or at least involve passingly, some kind of motion control or touch screen functionality to justify why that game either 'needs to be on the WiiU' or is presumably 'a better experience' with the WiiU's tablet and motion control innovations.

For example, both Batman/Arkham 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution are definitively traditionally playing games - they are best played as pure and simple cord and controller games. But when a retooled and exclusive WiiU 'armored edition' of Arkham 2 shipped as a launch title for WiiU, the major difference of this WiiU version was that it was modified to incorporate the WiiU's motion sensing tablet controller's touch screen functionality as an integral aspect to the gameplay (ie. inventory, x-ray scanning aiming, projectile toss aiming, etc.). The same will go for the upcoming WiiU Deus Ex re-release as well - it will tout some sort of touch screen interface designed to be integral to the game's experience on the WiiU.

All of this IS NOT a bad thing in and of itself and Shenmue 3 could theoretically 'fit culturally' within this way of doing things, but from the examples above, I want to imagine that we can appreciate that for Suzuki to be able to successfully 'sell' Nintendo on making Shenmue a part of the WiiU portfolio he would have to propose how he could potentially make motion control and tablet touch screen functionalities integral to the play of Shenmue 3 in order to make it 'fit' into the kind of game playing experience that Nintendo is trying to sell with the WiiU. And this IS fine (after all Shenmue 3 on any platform - be it even WiiU or Xbox 720 - would be far better than no Shenmue 3 at all) - after all how hard is it to tack on a touch screen inventory and motion controlled first person perspective camera control - but it just seems exactly like that: extraneous hoops for Suzuki to have to tack on WiiU functionality to make S3 attractive to the Nintendo businessmen he has to sell it to.

Besides - Mark Cerny *is* the chief architect for the PS4. But never mind that he is the chief architect, actually. For someone like Cerny, who is good friends with Suzuki and is sincerely appreciative of what Shenmue was and is, to be working within a position of some potential decision making power at a competent company like Sony does/should count a heck of a lot for something, if at all. Remember - if even at the very back of his mind, precisely because Cerny is friends with Suzuki and is sympathetic to Shenmue's circumstances, he might always be cognizant of when maybe a chance will present itself within Sony's strategies to re-introduce Shenmue and give his buddy Suzuki something to work with, at long last.

Or, maybe not. And all of us long-standing Shenmue fans will be left with nothing once again. Which is well, what we've always had in the first place. Cheers.

Re: Is it just too late for Shenmue III?

they should remake shenmue as a gritty fps. no seriously. Imagine the beginning dubstep starts playing then lan di comes in all guns blazing murdering ine san with a shotgun shell to the face then shanks fuku san leaving him to bleed to death in front of the dojo, Then when ryo arrive he sees his father being executed and instead of spiritual martial arts journey ryo becomes like max payne abusing drugs and alcohol as he shoots martial artists dead all across Asia looking for lan di. and instead of gay immersive open worlds we can have corridor levels where men in black suits charge in to your line of sight endlessly, beats following children around gritty tower blocks like a pedophile in shenmue 2 anyway...

anyway I'm sure this will save the series and make it a better experience for all of us

More updates, coming in near future, who knows, maybe?

Latest UPDATE: JUNE 2013 (This happened in March)

I actually met with Yu Suzuki again but this time @GDC 2013. (about 2 months ago)

And here are two pictures we got together :D

Pic 2

http://t.co/hZbRUWytGv

Pic 1

http://t.co/hZbRUWytGv

GDC 2013 is the same event as he met with Marc Cerny (perhaps, later on in the afternoon cuz we met at noon),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Cerny

For those who don't know (I know you know): Marc Cerny is lead architect of the Sony PlayStation 4 & the one who interviewd Yu back in GDC11 and he's a genius as well.

How we met?

I was doing my visit @GDC and had NO IDEA that Yu Suzuki might come to GDC 13,
so I was wondering around that I suddenly saw a familiar face @ a booth (he was almost invisible) xD
I waited for him to finish his visit while asking from the lady @the next booth to PLEASE GET READY TO TAKE OUR PIC!
She was like, who's he? I was like he's a GOD of gaming! (later after he left and She found out who was he, she said

"Oh, I love Virtua Cop" xD

She said Ok!, so Yu suddenly saw me xD AND remembered me from GDC11,

I was like Hello Suzuki san, I am Ali, long time no see!
He said, Oh! Hi, yes long time no see!

Sorry guys, can't remember the exact every line of our short conversation but anyhow:

I was like WOW! we didn't know you coming this year (especially after his GDC12 absence).
I was shocked to be able to find him accidentally between so many people!
I immediately asked him can we have a picture :)

So, that lady at the next booth took our picture and then I talked to Yu,

Like how are you doing?, when did you arrive?
He was I arrived just now in the city and I'm hungry xD
I'm glad that I met you again, we look forward your new games...we will be waiting.
(I think I mentioned that I still have his biz card from back in GDC11 too but I am sure he remembers)

Anyways, I told him once again, it was very nice to see him, and wish him good luck.

So I let him go to rest and eat *however he continued visiting the expo" :D

Funny how,

later on within half an hour I bumped into Hideo Kojima as well (AGAIN just like GDC11),
this was like a repeat of history! xD

However, I spotted Kojima when he came out from back of his GDC booth suddenly xD and while he was running for a sec, he went eye to eye with me, LMFAO xD I know he's even busier that Yu with all that MGS V, Fox Engine & etc flying around, so I didn't even bother to get any close to him till next time.

Well, after all , GDC is a biz event, not a fan event.

The day after, I saw Yu Suzuki and Cerny's pictures in media,
so I decided to do not post my meeting with him here, until I back to Dojo again cuz I knew you know he's been @GDC13.

My personal thought on the current Yu Suzuki and Shenmue's feature

All I know is Yu Suzuki is back, and making games, he just released his latest game on iTunes & Google App store (if you check his growing studio's web page http://www.ysnet-inc.jp/ you can find it and don't forget to get his game somehow and give it a high rank 5/5), here's also a video of the game I'm talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43K6bd7tutQ

https://itunes.apple.com/jp/app/id574368185
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.entag.android.osusume_ninki_kaizoku_10237

But the question is now burning even more:

Has he have made any progress with Marc Cerny or someone from Nintendo or even MS for teaming up with SEGA to finally bring us a Complete Shenmue Experience on PS4 or any other console?

A deal between SEGA and Sony/MS/Nintendo must happen if SEGA doesn't want to tackle this single handed.

I believe SEGA can still pull it off,

They have Team Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza) headed by Nagoshi (he was so close to Suzuki back in AM2) along the current SEGA-AM2 (VF, Miku, Ghost Squad, etc...) plus Yu is still an adviser to SEGA,

So he can remain a key role to next Shenmue...

Let's say now that E3 has come and is gone, it's about time for SEGA to decide what console and when, from now on it's gonna be interesting, and I am sure the Shenmue nation won't stop posting on SEGA's social media until they finally do it. :)

My advice to SEGA is:

Don't wait anymore, get that next gen AM2 or Yakuza engine running along team Yakuza making assets and even re-using assets from Yakuza series along whatever is left from Shenmue III Dreamcast (I am sure, there's a none finished Shenmue 3 DC some where, if not what is Niao Sun video?) plus Yu Suzuki and YS NET can supervise along bringing their social media tools (from Shenmue City) to a Shenmue Complete exprience.

GIVE US SHENMUE BACK BY HANDS OF SUZUKI, we will do our best to support Shenmue "TRUST US"

We can make lots of fan art, videos, musics, even fan-made games or write and spread the word about Shenmue more!

GO FOR IT SEGA

"Just make sure, you'll release it on a console that people will actually BUY" and gonna last 5+ years for sure.

Peace,
Alimn

Old UPDATES (From 2011):

OH MY GOD!
I MET YU SUZUKI TONIGHT!

:rotflmao:
:rotflmao:
:rotflmao:

please check the next posts for more info
, I will post what I told him and our pictures! as soon as possible
over my twitter ( alinovinworks ) and here too!

I told him how much we love him at Dojo,
I got pics with him and THANK GOD! I got my
VF4 Evo and Shenmue I copies signed!

Special Thanks to people who helped me to meet him, because it was not a main GDC event.
It was like 5-10 min, such a nice person!

Yu ROCKS! We love Yu! can't wait to see him tommorow when he gets his life time award!
And as gdconf.com says, we will hear about his future plans too,

Let's wish Shenmue Gai comes to west, becomes a hit, and we see more and more!

Very old (1st) update

We have already heard about this, right?,
ye ye...it's in the Shenmue I forum.

http://www.gamechoiceawards.com/

The one saying Yu Suzuki is gonna get another big life time award,
here this year, at GDC 11, the big game event at US "this week!".

But here are some more new info:

Speaker/s: Mark Cerny (Cerny Games) and Yu Suzuki (SEGA)
Day / Time / Location: Wednesday 10:30-11:30 Room 135, North Hall
Track / Format: Game Design / Lecture
Description: In this first-ever Western talk,
SEGA legend, Yu Suzuki talks with former colleague and industry veteran Mark Cerny on the inspiration
and design underpinnings behind his seminal game output. From HANG ON and OUT-RUN to SPACE HARRIER
and VIRTUA FIGHTER through AFTER BURNER and SHEN MUE, he has rarely spoken about the design reasoning
and creative decisions that underscored his career to date.
This Q&A style lecture will present what Suzuki has learned from his almost 30 years in the video game industry,
with direct reference to his past, current, and - indeed - future work.
Eligible Passes: All Access Pass, Main Conference Pass

Source:

http://schedule.gdconf.com/speaker/Yu-Suzuki

"I like the indeed future work part!, what about you?"

And as a surprising news, I don't know how...but it's been a while
since I have ended up here, and I will be there at this year's GDC,
my pass wont't allow me to get into Suzuki's room, but I will try
to attend at the ceremony one, when Suzuki is gonna recieve his award....

I've been always dreaming of a day to see Yu Suzuki from near,
and seems maybe it happens this week! OH MY GOD,
if I see him, I will let you know what happened...!
(last time I was dreaming, he was like escaping from me, I don't know why!
but come one Yu!, I admire you & relax, I wont ask about Shenmue 3 like those journalists)

Anway, I am happy enough that

1-Suzuki is back into spotlight
2-Shenmue gai is in his works
3-He may reveal more info about Shenmue III, or at least about Shenmue World for Face Book.
4-He is propably now, here, in my city! OMG! I may even know his hotel...lol!

A request:
Since this is a busy week!,
those people here, who are my friends at facebook, my username is alinovinworks,
or at twitter @novinworks, please check my wall or tweets, and feel
free to post them here,...if they were regarding Suzuki at GDC 11.

I hope gaming sites, and journalists, who get into the room
and who record or broacast the gdc, do NOT forget about
game choice awards, and Suzuki's lecture.

Best Regards, Ali M.N

Nozomi mentioned in Schrottgrenze song

I saw this on Shenmue.de and it hasn't been mentioned here on the Dojo yet.

http://youtu.be/qXMKQCz5Uk0

The German Indie-Band Schrottgrenze has released an album called "Das Ende unserer Zeit" in 2004 and one song on it is perticularly interesting for us. It's called "Nozomi's Lieder" wich translates out to "Nozomi's Songs".
It is about a girl from the east that's very beatiful and charms everyone with her singing. Sounds quite fitting to a certain Shenmue character besides the singing, does it? Might be a coincidence? Well they make it pretty clear from where they got the name because they actually sing the girls full name: Nozomi Harasaki.

Now this could've still just be a huge coincidence but no, they actually do mean Shenmue's Nozomi!
The guy that runs Shenmue.de recently asked the bands singer Alexander about the song and he replyed the following: "I was obsessed with Shenmue when it was new. I'd say it was my favorite game so far."

This just made me smile and I though, I'd share it with you here.

Re: Why does everyone say Quick "Time" Event?

Might as well shut down the Internet then, since 90% of the topics discussed don't really matter. Doesn't mean they can't be pondered over by the curious in the precious seconds it takes, though.

Shenmue 2D

http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r643/YCCTH/Shenmue%202D/TestCharacters006_zpsb02c415c.gif http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r643/YCCTH/Shenmue%202D/TestCharacters005_zpse3d09d54.png

Deadline:
Oct 1, 2013.

=====================================================================================================
Project Goals and Scope
=====================================================================================================
***Using the Unity game engine (or Flash), create a non-profit, single level, 2D sidescroller within the Shenmue universe where the player controls Ryo. The 'game' element is to be decided, but I'm really only shooting for a recreation of that level and some minor interactions. The same type of 'detective' gameplay may be implemented, such as when Ryo has to find out more about the three blades or sailors. This is where I can be a little bit more creative, but I don't really have many concrete ideas at the moment. I'm focusing on the social interactions Ryo has with the NPCs and not fighting or QTEs, despite both not being out of the question. It really depends on time and my programming abilities, which are not up to par yet.

***Create Dobuita from Shenmue with modifications to suit the 2D perspective. The goal is to make it large enough to have the same sort of traversal time as in the original game, ie., if Ryo were to walk from Sakurgoaka Park to the bus stop, it'd probably take a couple of minutes, from what I remember anyway. That's the kind of size I'm aiming for.

***NPCs will include as many of the 'main' secondary characters as possible. For now, Nozomi and Tom along with most of the shopkeepers are locked in for creation, while others like Noriko, Eri, Ichiro, Naoyuki, and Honey are secondary priorities. This may change depending on what I feel is best during development.

***Some of the more important interiors of buildings will be created, namely, You Arcade, Liu's Barber Shop, Tomato Convenience Store, Ajiichi Chinese Restaurant, Lapis Fortune Teller, and Aida Flower Shop.

***The artistic style may be the same as the animated GIF above or something more simplified or just simply different. Pixel art or painterly. I have to experiment more to find the right kind that suits my artistic ability, which is somewhat lacking.

=====================================================================================================
Summation and Notes
=====================================================================================================

I'm looking to spend every day on this and complete it as much as I can. This is my attempt at an interactive 2D game, which will give me experience to move on to other for-profit games I'm going to design in the future.

As is the case though, things can get derailed internally or externally. In that event, I may have to cancel the project at any time. Hopefully, that doesn't happen.

About the GIF though, the palette and style was my attempt at drawing Ryo in the King of Fighters 13 style, which relies on nearly 5 tints of a single colour to create gradients/shadows. I recall it being rather tedious drawing pixel art (having only vaguely done it before as a child) and it took about a while to do, even to its incomplete state (which was due to personal reasons). I'm not a person that just draws for the fun. I draw only to complete an objective. In that sense, my artistic abilities are lacking, and yet it allows me to pick and choose styles to emulate or modify. We'll just have to see what I come up with. I'm probably still going to do pixel art though. Can't ignore the charm of it.

Hopefully, a cease and desist doesn't come my way. I'd consider this complex fan art that's 'transformative', but you never know.

I'll update as frequently as I can.

Re: Shenmue 2D

http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r643/YCCTH/Shenmue%202D/002RyoHazuki003_zpse5cc698a.jpg
http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r643/YCCTH/Shenmue%202D/002RyoHazuki004cropped_zpsf1b16612-1.jpg

A couple of tests. I've decided to go for a more cel-shaded look than the pixel art style because it's simply easier to do and allows for a little more expression/detail in the faces. You can see I had wrinkles in the first concept on the left, but decided to leave them out in the second. I think still looks decent enough. We'll see how it looks when I do the walk cycle, but I doubt anyone is going to miss my crappy renderings of folds.

Also, the first concept's face looks entirely different than the second concept. While the first one looks 'cuter' (with it's own charm, which I like), the second matches Ryo's 3D model's proportions a lot better. He does look a little angrier, which might have to change a little. It's somewhat tedious how a few pixels can change facial expression at this pixel density.

About the style, it's slightly painterly on the lines and a bit more rough. I could replace them with pen tooled lines, but that takes a long time and the result would not be that dissimilar to what I have now.

Background plate was done with 3DS Max many months ago. The backgrounds will be in 2D though and will not have angular perspective. It'll only have parallaxing backgrounds, the same as in Super Mario World or Muramasa: The Demon Blade.

The game will be in 1920x1080.

A walk and run cycle are next.

I'm remaking Yokosuka in fancy next-gen 3D.Yes,that's right!

Hello fellow Shenmue-fans.
A lot has happened since I joined the Dojo in 2005, but as far as Shenmue goes, we're still waiting : (. Back in '05, I was just another youth with an unsure future, but my favorite games of all time were, like most f you, the Shenmues (still is, to this day).
Now, almost 10 years later, I'm a professional 3D-artist, working in the video game industry. Fate, right? Anyways, since Yu and the Boys (and Nagoshi, and the Yakuza-guys) can't seem to do neither a remake of Shenmue I&II, nor shenmue III I've decided to take it upon myself to recreate the whole of Shenmue I in 3D, so everything's done for them the day they decide t actually do a remake! Handy right? : D

I posted this thread almost 2½ years ago, some of you might remember that, it was my intention back then to start this project, but work, life, and everything else came between. Now however, I've got a solid job, many interesting sideprojects running, and a lot of time to kill during the weekends! So, thus, the saga begins ;)

Hope y'all like this!
Every model is 100% custom made from scratch , no Shenmue-assets used at all, every texture is custom made, every painting and kanji based on screenshot/photos of my TV, which I've then painted on for maximum accuracy! It's not much.. yet, but it's something!

Everything's default rendered in the fancy Unreal engine atm, which I'm not yet really familiar with.. but I will be! : D

(I think it all looks kinda crap atm , the light is off and so on,but bear with me, I'll learn as I go and I'll see this through : ) )

http://imageshack.us/a/img694/6946/4qmd.jpg
The Dojo, for Shenmue Dojo! : D Lacking a roof atm.. working on that!
http://imageshack.us/a/img821/5779/ec9w.jpg
Gonna light the candles later too!
http://imageshack.us/a/img834/4632/ytat.jpg
All the scrolls and stuff are based on the game's! Still missing the sword-box, working on it!
http://imageshack.us/a/img580/2827/nshg.jpg
The door, with a red-brown inside, and dark brown outside, just like in the game : D
http://imageshack.us/a/img5/5527/em9j.jpg
Really happy with how that hose and bucket turned out : D
http://imageshack.us/a/img801/7669/06ou.jpg
The garden lantern! I added some kanjis, anyone recognise them? : ) I try to stay as true to the original look as possible, while adding "logical" details that current gen tech can handle but the DC could not : )
http://imageshack.us/a/img600/8026/5ip4.jpg
Some bushes and stuff, all very WIP! Note that the fence is now modelled, and not a polygon plane lik in the game ;P
As John Hammond said in jurasic park.. Spared no expense!

I'm working on this a bit every weekend, and sometimes during the wekdays. I'm fulltime employed at Paradox Interactive, and I spend a lot of my freetime developing games for iOS and such, so time is kinda slim but, as you can see, I'm getting somewhere! : D I'll update this thread every now and then when I get the time : D

And I'll see this project through! Probably before Shenmue 3 is released, anyway! xD

Also, thanks to Ziming who posted a lot of Shenmue screens last time I asked for them, without them, I'd have a really hard time creating all this in 3D (I do look in-game a LOT but, some things you just cannot get a good view of xD)

Also, last but not least, I'm ALWAYS in need of good reference material . If anyone got texture packs (i don't use the, but I look at them : )), hi-res screen, screens of weird angles (like, a skyview om Hazuki residence and such) it would be REALLY helpful to get my hand on these : )
