Re: We should really push for full voice acting

In some of the resent interviews he said that they made an algorithm for doing the same lines sound different.

If they have this in mind, to this day it sounds fucking awesome (the different dialogue, not the VO).

If that it's not the case and means recording everything separate, then I say I don't care.

It was pretty damn awesome how SI did, if there's no dialogue stop the dialogue trigger, even then you can try again after walking around (fucking awesome if you think about adventure games, or rpgs that say the same shit again).

The dynamic facecams the game did are still (very) impresive, They are fucking dynamic, it kinda understands enviroments and who are you talking to (not nearby standers). Really it's still fucking incredible.

Re: Thanking Sony

Looks like helping Shenmue has caused more troubles to their image than benefits, unfortunately for them. Too bad for everyone that Andrew House didn't know how to communicate.

No it didn't. More than 1/4th of the E3 "sony fucking won" was because SIII. It was a fucking amazing conference.

And to be honest, yeah, I want to thank Sony (even I kinda hated for a while). If there were not any BIG producers saying "we'll lend a hand" Shenmue III will not be comming.

If they didn't go all in, that's most of what everyone was done for a game like Shenmue (fucking NOW LIVING videogame HISTORY).

Also a big thanks to Shibuya productions, they were crazy good with interacting with fans.

EDIT: Seems like most times I post in this forum I'm drunk. But that doesn't mean I'm always drunk.

Re: Random Thoughts

The other day I was wondering how comes that before some of the architectural marvels took over oneself complete lifetime, and today we build just huge blocks that fuck the sky in a couple of years.

We have forgotten what it is to put a brick of a construction we'll never see (I guess educating your children is a little bit like that, but even then, we can see most results).

I was looking at Maya culture, Fuck, their whole history carved in their temples, their cosmology, their knowledge.
Notredame took almost 200 years (and it's not the one that took most).

Some of those things are pure fucking marvelous, now we have just concrete and iron (and that mostly in US, in most places iron isn't even used).

Makes you feel weird about everything. The only example I can see today is the "sagrada familia" in Barcelona.

Re: Kickstarter Update #47

There are lots of things:

- UE (and most 3d engines) have realtime global illumination, that wasn't used in DC era.
- In Shenmue bumpmapping as far as I know weren't even in use, today we have PBR materials for everything.
- Even while Shenmue was written in c++, UE has it's own libraries (in c++ also), so porting code is not just copy/paste, it's not just "fine tunning", they have to read the code (if they can) and see what works and how to use UE language better. Also their engine had their own language, so it's a matter of translating what could speed up the development.
- They SHOULD (IMO) use what tools they have to make the best game they can.
- Post rendering shaders are something common today, "camera effects" were almost impossible back then.
- UE has also the physics engine libs in their engine, they have to work with that and not "around that", so a lot of what Shenmue did in terms of fighting will have to change in some way.

Yeah, it's not going to look the same, and it's not going to feel the same, but it can be better. Let's not just be fundamentalist for the sake of being fundamentalists.

Also, the camera angles, lens effects and post effects in those pics are to make things look better (and not give out that it's a built in test scene).

Let's give Yu the benefit of being one of the greatest game developers around and he knows what he is doing.

Re: Kickstarter Update #47

The scary part is, Yu had the gull to show such off, so clearly he's pretty happy with the progress.

I don't think Yu has what it takes, he always going abaout oh he can do so much more with modern technologies, bola, bla, bla, but if this is a taste of that so called more, do we really want that.

Then there's the whole ragdoll physics nonsense in the stretch goals. All Yu seems to be focusing on, is playing with a new toy(aka Unreal 4). Instead of thinking first, and foremost about what would be fitting in a Shenmue 3, he's more about, haven't done this yet, so that must be good.

OMG I hate the coding mentality. Yu, please stop acting like a coder, you're the lead game designer, and director for crying out loud.

I seriously can't believe people are defending those SS, and a certain thing he said in a past interview about the battle system(which I've already talked enough about)

I edited to make the responses:

- He has said that he'll make monthly updates, it's not that "he's happy showing" it's that he made a pact with us, and he fucking delivered in a great way.

- He already said that SIII will be more intimate, that they are trying to get the designs smaller to do the Shenmue feel come alive.

- Shenmue free battle is a part of the real Shenmue, it will not be the same, but also it won't be Shenmue if they scrapped that.

- Yu designer mentality is what made SIII to have various prototypes. Yu coding mentality is what made Shenmue revolutionary in times when no one thought things like that could be made.

- Those screnshots are pretty much what you can call a mockup to pitch, he shared those with us.
He said it's not the final model, that the angles were to not give us spoilers (and test scene enviro), and that they're still working on it. What more do you want ?

Re: Kickstarter Update #47

He didn't because mainstream (almost) free engines didn't exist back then (he had to use military hardware for his creations in the past ).

I can't know what he thinks, but (by the way he told us) he knows what Shenmue fucking is.

I don't see him riding the unicorn to farland, I read about a guy that it's working 18 hours a day, and that want us to be happy about what he's making.

Japan is very closed to the new engines, it's fucking true, but I see that he's working with that and not against that (that I think is the best way to go).

As far as I can see, he is doing Shenmue III.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Looking at that video makes you realize how every piece of Shenmue seems to weight more than most games.

When you talk about replayability about naming a cat, that's something. Even today were you have hundreds of missions, collectibles and bullshit, in Shenmue even naming a cat has a bigger impact than "killing the dragon at suckass mountain and getting the sword of whateverthefuck".

Re: Shenmue 3 can't promise 60fps but can promise sexy girls

I actually am an advocate of better gender representation in games. (Don't eat me.) But y'know... Yu Suzuki is nearly 60 years old, and is very, very out of touch with current industry trends and thinking (by his own admission, so that's not me disrespecting him.)

What trend ? To clickbait ? The same people that won't give a shit about Xiuying being the most intelligent/powerful character in SII, are the ones that will complain about joy's tits. It's not about representation it's about polarizing the market so they can get constant revenue.

Different characters have different attributes, some people just like to stir shit because it will sell, and there will be money in getting the sheeple caught (in a marketing sense).

I would want to know what happens in the mind of those writers (rewriters actually). Do they think they're doing a good job (they got the important info on the title?), they think they're just doing what they can to grab clicks ?, they're cynic bastards that just care about creating controversy ?

I don't fucking know.

Re: How long do you think Shenmue III will be ??

Shenmue is pretty short if you rush and go from A to Z without taking your time here and there.

Shenmue II can be speedrun in a lot less than first. Mainly because you can skip cutscenes.

But Shen I has a lot of articial (or semi artificial), ways to make the game longer, while in SII it's mostly on point (without counting "real way" of gathering money in 2 instances).

I quite like the "unespected" ambushes while forklifting, or the "time to waste" in the first one, but that does matter in second (or 20th time).

Shenmue II has a lot of those "random moments" that get rewarded by exploring, while Shenmue I makes you explore by design.

I like Shenmue I more than II (as I've said it enough times here). Hopefully SIII will have a playtime that doesn't try to drag bullshit (like most wrpg jrpgs of our time).

Re: Psychonauts 2

The first chapter was almost a browser game (in the genre divition, not platform), no difference between left click and right click to observe/use. Not much of combine objects in inventory or using them in conversations (or conversational puzzles), there's a lot that was missing there. It was designed to be a tablet game.

They used the money to make a new engine while there are a lot of free ones, and now they're using that engine to make their remakes (apparently). So using that money to make their own investments.

EDIT. looking at my posts from DF forum:
- The puzzles lacked coherence, were very few, and not well done.
- Too much hand holding, and hinting at what to do, instead of making you feel intelligent was (look, a key + door = open, wink wink).
- Lack of items.
- Lack of good challenges.
- had very little locations, but backtrack, and it was all the same, they didn't think that through.
- one cut and copy puzzle per location... seemed so scripted, in a bad way.

Re: How long do you think Shenmue III will be ??

Also, I don't think Shenmue fans should complain much about map assistance in modern open worlds. Not only you can disable the assistance interface in some games or not paying attention to, but Shenmue is maybe the easiest game to find your place (asking npc, automatic npc following for 80% of them). It's more a question of philosophy rather than assistance weight so I'm not worry that much, Shenmue will still be Shenmue.

That's the difference between Shenmue and map markers.

It's not that in Shenmue is easy or hard, it's that Shenmue was a little bit more than a game.
It was easy for Shenmue to just put an arrow.
It was easy for Shenmue to do meaningless subquests.

In SII you can call it a chore to do the book airing, but that was the point.

As you said it, it's that philosophy that Shenmue had, and the same fear of trying to do it "for everyone", not by design, but by following trends (Shenmue was meant for kids, kodomo mode ?).

Shenmue I is my favorite game of all time, and It feels more than SII, that's why I did this topic. Content over fluff (or mainstream grinding design).

Re: Kickstarter Update 51: Poll Results & Shenmue.link revam

It's sad, but I think that in trying to do the right thing and not getting getting anyone mad they ended up rustling more feathers than needed.

If they have had done the same rewards from the first second, no one would have batted an eye. If they change it now would be "backers scammed with not exclusive content" or "Yu Suzuki now trying to get more money by scamming backers" or some clickbait like that.

Now it's gonna be "paypal backers get less of a game they backed", "YS goes against backer decisions" or some shit.

I would feel so salty if I was Yu.

Re: Kickstarter Update 51: Poll Results & Shenmue.link revam

To be honest, just looking at neogaf, everyone thinks that Shenmue is not giving paypal backers what they paid for, which is not true.

Part of that is that media is shit, part is that people are stupid, and part of it is communication (and that's AJ fault).

If you look at it, the only thing that actually lacks is the telephone card (and some, make your gatcha toy, name this or that), it's not that bad, but even the way they framed it was weird (even putting the "don't care" option in the poll).

It's not a big deal, but once again, the backlash has been bigger than the reality.

That sucks.

EDIT: also, seems more like they were "morally bound" due to words, because it says in a lot of places "exclusive" or "backer" (and those are in the paypal) and only in some places actually says "kickstarter". It seems that they just worded things differently "on the go" and not really thinking on a later paypal campaign.
