Re: Japanese Music

I was feeling kind of shitty, unsure of certain of my life decisions, and anxious last night. I really needed something to pick myself up and reassure myself, then I thought of this thread and realised exactly what I needed: some Jazztronic and Monday Michiru! Haha. I literally felt like 100% better after listening to some. Some good ol' comfort music. I Love Monday Michiru, she's a straight up specialist in feel good easy listening, you can pretty much listen to anything by her and feel perked up! Plus, anyone who calls their album 'Soulception' gets an A++ in my book. She looks pretty great for 50 years old too! I need me a broad like that (by that I don't mean a 50 yr old, I mean someone like a young Michiru). Word up.

How does shenmue hold up today?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to get your opinions/stories on if you think shenmue still holds itself even with today's next gen consoles.
Does the storyline or nostalgia stay with you, is it one of your favourite game series?

I don't mean graphics or anything like that. I want your opinions if shenmue still remains something you play or someone you fell out of love with.

Share your thoughts

Thanks

Re: How old were you when you first played Shenmue?

First Time playing Shenmue was in early 2000, imported the Japanese Version, wasn't easy to Play without understanding but managed to see the end before the Bad Ending happens. :)

..and I was 29 then, guess I'm the oldest Fuck here around..

Re: Shenmue in Local Communities

For what it's worth, I liked where you were coming from Jenny. We don't get enough people who dare to think outside the box or dream big over here. And that is exactly the kind of thinking that sparked Team Yu and the current campaign. Sure, not every idea will come to fruition, but some will stick and can have surprising results. So, I would wholeheartedly encourage you to stay here and continue to bounce ideas with us.

Re: Vote the Shenmue soundtrack into the Classic FM Hall of

Don't worry Nahovil, I think Beethoven will forgive you. :D

To justify voting above music you might honestly prefer, I'll use the same argument as during the German magazine tournament that we won last year: Shenmue has more to gain from your vote.

Even though it's just another public poll, being able to refer to Shenmue's original soundtrack as part of a mainstream 'Hall of Fame' adds an air of independent legitimacy to fans' claims of how great the music is, which in its own minor but tangible way strengthens the argument for HD re-releases.

It may not seem like a big deal on the surface, but it's better to do it than not do it. Another feather in Shenmue's cap and another string to the bow of those who campaign for it. So even though Ziming point-blank refuses to publicize this through the vital outlets at his disposal, thank you to the Dojo members he represents for taking the time to vote. :)

Re: Fantasy Elements in Shenmue III

I'd personaly hate it if Shenmue III would go as far as Shenmue Online did. That's just too much, no matter how you look at it.
If I could choose I'd like Shenmue to have no supernatural element at all. The games just put so much focus on creating a realistic world that I honestly don't like that stuff in Shenmue. I don't really mind the stuff that happens at the end of Shenmue II anymore but the first few times it really made me cringe.

I hope they don't go overboard in the further chapters. As long as they have good explanations why Shenmue has powers and that the mirrors have some mysterious force I'm happy. They really could've went without the floating sword though...

Re: Diagnosed With Testicular Cancer :(

Had my operation. I'm still recovering, but i'm a lot more mobile then I was a few days ago.

The next step is for them to investigate the affected testicle and determine what type of cancer it is.

They said they would call me next week to come back into the hospital in order to have my blood checked. Apparently, once you have the diseased testicle removed, you blood levels should go back to normal after 7 days.

Next, they will give me a CT scan of my body to determine if the cancer has spread.

From there, I guess further treatment begins.

On the bright side, the chest xray that they performed a week ago was completely clear. Im guessing this will have to be reconfirmed with the ct scan, but it does make me a little bit more hopeful.

Tough times ahead.

Thanks for everyone's kind messages. It really does mean a lot.

Re: Yu Suzuki revisits Shenmue at GDC 2014 (Postmortem)

Date and time announced :

Wednesday, March 19th from 2pm to 3pm.

San Francisco will be in the PDT (Pacific Daylight) time zone, so that start time equates to 5pm EST or 9pm GMT (as the UK won't enter daylight savings until later in the month).

EDIT: Had been basing this on PST, when it will actually be PDT by the time the conference arrives.

Re: Issues with Shenmue Undub on my Dreamcast?

The japanese version has many more speech files than the english version does. If not close to double the amount of speech files.

The majority of the JP speech files once rebuilt into an archive are:
Missing
Differently Named
Etc.

**This is why it is silent when the files were incompatible between both versions.

It took me many months just to get the subtitles to load correctly with the modified speech files. In many different previous iso versions the mod would produce subs that had a mix of JP and ENG including funky ascii. Also previous versions had issues with crashing.. Once I finally figured out howto swap and mod everything that was possible then rebuild the archives correctly, the final result is that some of the FREE speech is silent.

Free Speech has close to 60 percent complete undub.
Cinematics is more like 98 percent complete undub.

Anyhow it was a complete bitch to mod undub.
The project is complete..although Revive DC will someday do a repack for Disc 3.

Consider this undub a hacked undub. (Modified Files, Swap, etc.)
Play this version until a newer one is available...

The only way that a 100 percent complete undub can be done is if the subs are translated from japanese to english. (while using all the jp speech files)
Good news, Kogami is doing this exact translation of Shenmue 1 for DC.
Some day it will be complete and you will not have to play this version anymore.

Hope this helps.

Re: Random Thoughts

Niccolo Paganini, for example, was an absolute master of the violin in ways that Beethoven would never be able to match with any instrument,

Well that's just not true. We have no actual(video or audio) evidence to base skill level assessments of either of them on so we have to go by second hand sources. All, or at least most, of which attribute god-like unsurpassable abilities to both Paganini and Beethoven. Now considering the human affinity for exaggeration we have to break it down in to realistic terms and assume this means they both achieved a very high level. Virtuoso even. Technical skill-wise, the Igudesman and Joo of the 19th century. I don't think there would be any butt whooping from either side really. Just two masters exhibiting their instruments fullest potential.

As for fame Beethoven is more well known because his shit is more accessible. Simple as that. He has "hits" so to speak. He wrote melodies like a motherfucker. Paganini wrote stuff that was impressive to play at his live shows but to the average listener not that fun. Beethoven did his fair share of musical showing off but filled in the gaps with Pathetique Sonatas and Eroica Symphanies. Stuff to get the hoes panties wet. You don't even have to like music to understand those kind of pieces(or at least the famous bits of them).

Re: Diagnosed With Testicular Cancer :(

CT Scan CLEAR.

It doesn't look like the cancer has spread.

I just have to hope that my blood levels go back to normal now.

It looks like they caught it super early, so ill have more treatment options available.

I should be back to normal in no time........hopefully. :)

Re: Shenmue Undub Download Here..

Are you kidding me?!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!11

This should be on the front page, it really is like playing a new game of Shenmue. I'd much prefer 'shenmue in japanese' over 'shenmue HD' which is what probably would make the front page of shenmuedojo.

This has been in demand as I'm sure you know.

I can't wait to try it out! MUCH LOVE!!!

Re: Best PC exclusive games

I've played Old Republic too but after an amazing first ten levels it seemed to gradually lose a lot of steam. I got bored with it at 41 and quit. A pity too, it has the best production values of any mmo on the market. I really wish they had just made a single player KOTOR 3 that did Revan's character some justice.

Shenmue 3d/2d Art Download

http://shenmueangel.free.fr/images/shenmue2/bannieres/gimage_sh2.png

Here are download links to all the original Shenmue art files I've amassed over the years. It ranges from original .bmp wallpaper from Shenmue.com, scans from strategy guides, and high resolution .psd artwork from Shenmue II.

Most of this art was acquired from Microsoft Game Studios website years ago. Since Microsoft was publishing the game in the U.S they were provided these files to promote/advertise it. The .psd artwork I mentioned above is the most interesting out of the bunch. They come in some insane resolutions and are separated by layers, meaning you can easily separate a character and the background behind it. Included below are raw scans from the various Shenmue game soundtracks, and screen captures from the Xbox game.

Re: Speculation: Why there is no HD version of Shenmue

Like I said going from normal to HD or VGA is a huge thing but going from VGA to HD is very insignifcant.

Are you for real? The only difference between scart/composite/RF and VGA is that one outputs an interlaced picture and the other progressive. I'm in no mood to go into how the two work - but in short - progressive means that all of the pixels are being updated at once as opposed to just half with interlaced. It's certainly a better image - but it doesn't come close to the difference between SD and HD.

The Dreamcast outputs in 480P or 480I - both of which equate to 307,200 pixels. 1080P offers 2,073,600 pixels - which is 6.75 times as many as 480P.

With VGA all you're getting is a smoother image rather than one which is better defined. If done correctly (these being the key words here) - HD versions of Shenmue would be a massive step up from playing the originals on DC (especially if you're playing them on a 32" monitor or higher).

I agree however, that the majority of HD re-releases we've seen to date suck major balls.

Re: Shenmue Postmortem Discussion

man, i really don't get why some of you are so bitter with Yu, how many times does the man have to say he wants to give us a finale but he's not allowed to? exactly what role do you think he plays at Sega in 2014...? would you rather he'd lied?

we got some great info, and yeah the Q&A wasn't so hot but i dug the origin of Space Harrier story, myself. still no idea when 2 will be discussed (next year?) but yeah, i understand the disappointment but again Cerny being around isn't nearly what everyone made it out to be; he's translated for Yu before & they're old friends from the golden AM2 days. if you didn't at least enjoy some of the details & stories (much less sketches/etc) how are you enough of a shenmue fan to be here to begin with?

Re: Shenmue Postmortem Discussion

Someone should of been direct at the Q&A and said "So you're looking for a publisher eh"?

Or maybe like "Has Sony tried to work with your budget"? I think these questions would of made Yu-San give a more in depth answer, than just saying of course I still want to make Shenmue. Of course he does! Look how he lights up when he talks about the game. At the end of the day its all about business.

He seemed a little tensed or too laid-back at GDC presentation, I guess maybe the audience wasn't feeling it? Then again he needed more time to explain the story. (As I stress.) Also, that audience should of been filled with die hard Shenmue Fans that lived through that era of witnessing the greatness of the game back in 1999.

I don't think the world of gaming will accept Shenmue 3.. This is a different era of gaming.. Shenmue is too complex and people don't like complex nowadays.

Yu-San wants to make Shenmue more in-depth than we think, all of those chapters.... It's bigger than getting revenge on Lan Di alone. The exploration of the asian culture of martial arts and treasure as well as the enviorments. Yu is trying to follow the original plan by making it like this not trying to water it down by going with a cheap publisher and put out a shortened version of Shenmue. Im sure of it. He needs a big budget. Thats what he wants.

Re: Newly found Shenmue art from the Sega Saturn era

This is fascinating stuff.

As soon as I saw images 1 and 3, they immediately reminded me of the 1999 Shenmue calendar. I've taken some snaps of most of the months. The ones missing are familiar pictures of Shenhua so I didn't bother taking them.

As far as I can recall offhand, I haven't seen this artwork in any other Shenmue merchandise. But this stuff is absolutely beautiful to look at.

There's a light directly above so apologies for the shine.

Out of touch is a very good thing. If modern gaming is being in touch, I'd like to loose focus, hear fuzz and wake up on the wrong side of the bed.

Japan has a wonderful history of insane noisy psychedelic rock going back to Les Rallizes Denudes in the 1960s. My favorite band in this tradition (although there are many great ones) has got to be Boredoms. Fucking awesome stuff.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Ryo also inhibits the most samurai of characterization: stoic, guarded in emotion, who highly values honor, and is not a particularly big fan of admitting weakness or need of help.

During the Meiji Restoration, Buddhism symbolized the shogunate and the Japanese power structure, including the samurai. Many fought to destroy Buddhism in Japan called the Haibutsu kishaku (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haibutsu_kishaku). Given that the Hazuki style is extremely well developed, it's reasonable to conclude that it has been developed for centuries. Given the wealth, the martial arts style, the religions, everything indicates Ryo has samurai heritage. I'm most curious how they'd retain their wealth post-meiji, however, given that samurai were cast off. They likely used the dojo as a means for sustenance. But during the game there's nothing to indicate they had students besides Fuku and Ryo. So I'm not sure.

all of this is hypothetical, but i feel there's enough evidence for it. Plus, it's fun to talk about.

Re: Yu Suzuki Interview: Shenmue, From Prototypes to Today

Yeah i provided answers and brought questions.

Regarding Grand Masters, my mouth is sealed sorry. But i am not giving up, just like most of us and will keep working hard to make sure we get Shenmue III in the future.

Here is what Suzuki san said :

"With the new infos i am allowing to share, i want Shenmue fans to imagine characters design"

Basically, he still has hope to make it and doesnt want to give up, thats how i felt while talking to him.

Him sharing everything would ruin it all so imagination is something that make us wait while he is still trying to sort it out.

Yu Suzuki is really a great person. Hope to meet with him again.

Glad you liked it and sorry kept you waiting.

Edit :

Regarding 帝, Tei is a grade within the organization.

Shenmue II Cutscene Comparison (DC, Xbox, Demul, Xbox 360)

I decided to make another thread dedicated to one of my videos as it's my 50th and something truly unique.

I recorded footage from Dreamcast, Xbox, Demul and Xbox 360 at native resolution, removed the black bars and put everything at original size in one HD video. A side by side by side by side comparison. Happy eyeball training!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujCPPNLc-5o

By the way this was my most time consuming and complicated video yet. I obviously had to play the first disc of the game four times, keeping an eye on the time so everything was under the same light. I had to make a few little adjustments where the Dreamcast version was going far out of sync because of slowdowns or longer load times. Minor differences were left intact. The rest of the editing was also on a larger scale then usual and the limits of the software I use really showed here regarding it's preview image and video performance.
