Re: Twitter Q&A Round 2 Live now!

Translation of the Japanese questions.

https://twitter.com/shenmue1999/status/619199010520367104

Will there be a reappearance from Hiroshi Fujioka (Iwao Hazuki) who joined in on the Shenmue Gai announcement. I'd like to see his younger self and what he did.

The other day Hiroshi Fujioka sent me some Fujioka coffee.
Uh.. apparently Hiroshi Fujioka is selling coffee now? Who knew? http://www.samurai-hiroshi-shop.jp

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619701237831745536

Since the hardware is different for Shenmue 3 we won't be able to transfer the save. Will that mean that moves like the brawling uppercut won't make an appearance? I ask because when going from Shenmue 1 to 2 I was sad to realize that the tornado kick was overwritten. I'm really looking forward for the launch of Shenmue 3.

I'll think about adding Brawling uppercut and Tornado kick.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619701670017003520

Which version do you recomend for someone who as neither of the two systems? Will there be any differences between PC and PS4?

Both the PS4 version and the PC version will take advantage of the respective advantages of the hardware. So it doesn't matter which you buy.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619701800719904769

I love Shenmue but I'm terrible at playing games. The only reason I was able to finish the game was because the difficulty level dropped since I failed so much. Will there be a system to help me in Shenmue III too? (please!)

Definitely! There will be a variable difficulty level so that new players that don't know about Shenmue will be able to play.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619707151469023234

Will you show something at Tokyo Game Show and events like that?

As for this year's TGS it's undecided.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619707313889280004

Will Ryo and Shenhua stay in the same room at the inns in Shenmue 3?

That depends on the vacancy of Choubu Inn.

Edit: rest of them:

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619714027741011968

Among the characters of Shenmue or you other games, who...
would you like to be friend with?
would you like to make your girlfriend?
do you actually hate?

My wife is too scary, I can't answer that.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619719136944361472

Will Ren, who said "This is getting interesting!" when Ryo went to Guilin, appear in Shenmue 3.

Spoiler: He will! I have an interesting appearance in mind.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619721535478042630

Is it impossible for you to work with a japanese crowdfunding site (like Makuake)? I'm not that confident with foreign websites.

At the official site there's an explanation of kickstarter so please take a look at that. There are Japanese speaking staff that can answer Kickstarter messages.

https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/619722652240883712

I loved the soundtrack more than the story or graphics. Will there be a special CD like the jukebox from Shenmue 1.

We're planning on adding nostalgic tracks from Shenmue 1 and 2 on the soundtrack that comes with the 250 dollar pledge.

Re: Shenmue 1 and 2 widescreen hacks Dreamcast

Here's a Cheat Engine file that may save you a bit of time when applying this fix with Demul. You can easily toggle between the default Letterbox (4:3) mode and Widescreen (16:9) mode by clicking on the value column of the related version.
This works with: Beta Shenmue, What's Shenmue [JP], Shenmue [EU, US, JP], US Shenmue [JP], and Shenmue II [EU, JP].

Re: What do you least like about Shenmue?

-the skybox in shenmue 1 was very pixelated and moved weirdly, like a 2d texture - it also had some noticeable seams.

-harsh audio compression on the voice audio.
-inconsistency in recording quality of voices.

-would have been nice if npcs wished you a happy xmas and new years on the actual days (apart from santa)

-would have been nice to be able to buy friends gifts for xmas. - some more unique dialogues about those days.
-the voice actors especially the main ones are fine, but they needed better direction. i would guess that the audio engineers in charge were not native speakers so could not discern the various incongruous deliveries.
-would have been nice to have an option in the settings to play the motor bike race to the harbour section, like there is for the 70 man battle on disc 3.

- the final few hours of shen 1 goes too quickly. it would have been nice to have more time to explore the world after your final day of work rather than the game rushing you into the final battles.
-why did they make all the character profiles on shenmue passport rely upon internet connection to sega web? i'm sure the text could have easily fit on the disc. bad decision.

- more sparing opportunities.
- there are too few opportunities to train throw moves.

-aggressive pop-in of npcs - although probably unavoidable due to technology constraints - it does hurt the game.

- can't eat the chocolates, caramel etc.
- more variety in the naoyuki telephone dialogues.
- better odds in the raffle.

-more branching paths on failed qte rather than just retries.
-thugs with umbrella's seem inappropriate.
- after beating up the school girls, their attitude doesn't change towards me although i would have thought they would either fear me or have more respect for me.

probably loads more stuff. i'll think more about it.

Re: [Demul, NullDC]Shenmue II cutscene bars removing tool [W

I was talking about an older way to do this with cheat engine where you had to search for a specific byte while playing the game during each and every cutscene.
ok, sorry, misunderstood, my bad #-o #-o

Alright, if anyone wants to test their luck :D , here is list of codes, I separated them for better readability, it should work for whole disk 1, except one cutscene, which i'll add codes for later.

i've been using this today.

observations.

during the transitions from the wong qte chase to the cutscene after you jump over the fence and then to free battle, there is a very momentary flicker of the border appearing then disappearing. it really is so quick as to be hardly noticeable, but its definitely there. this only seems to happen when transitioning to or from a qte or free battle. it doesn't happen when a cutscene begins from the normal free roam mode.

i've watched all cutscenes up until getting the crate lifting job from joy and there have been no other issues so far
i've also been using this in combination with the widescreen code without any problems so far.

i'm not planning on doing a full playthrough of shenmue 2 for a few more months so i can't check everything until then. its looking good though.

edit;

ok think i just found a glitch,
when entering white dynasty quater from south carmain qr, just as you approach the map stand to your left, a huge piece of geometry glitches accross the screen from the building on the left.

this only occurs with black bars code, so its not caused by the widescreen code

Weekly AM2 article: Young Ryo's meal recipe

Here is a translation of an article published in the Weekly AM2 online magazine in June 2000, as requested by Giorgio.

Not a necessity at all, but any chance to translate the official recipe (by AM2) of how the young Ryo Hazuki ate his carrots (carefully picked by the farmers one by one)? I think for Shenmue fans it would be enticing to try them cooked that way in real life!

Link to original article

http://i.imgur.com/VlxZCnJ.jpg
6 June 2000

A Meal at the Hazuki Residence

This project was born from our desire to taste that well-known meal that features in Shenmue.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a meal featuring in Shenmue are the carrots that Ryo ate when he was a young boy. We will be recreating exactly the meal that was served that day at the Hazuki residence, specifically the stewed vegetable dish containing those rounded carrots - we'll refer to it as "Simmered Carrots".

Recipe for Simmered Carrots

http://i.imgur.com/78OAOwm.jpg http://i.imgur.com/q90YdoA.jpg
[Left] Our ingredients
[Right] The carrot in question

Ingredients (serves 2)

⋅ Carrots: 1
⋅ Potatoes: 2
⋅ Snow peas: a moderate amount
⋅ Sesame oil: 2 large spoonfuls
⋅ Dashi [Japanese soup stock] : 1.5 cups
⋅ Seasoning: sugar, mirin [cooking sake] , sake, soy sauce

Preparation

Peel the carrots thickly, with broad strokes; this will result in a more angular, polygonal appearance as you slice them into rings. To ensure they cook through properly, make a cross-shaped cut at their centers. Also chop up some of the carrot into chunks.

http://i.imgur.com/5gd1yhj.jpg
Don't forget that polygonal look

Peel the potatoes in the usual way, removing the eyes. Cut into quarters and slice off the sharp edges to help stop them from disintegrating during cooking.

Frying

Heat 2 large spoonfuls of sesame oil in a pot. Fry the carrots and then the potatoes on medium heat, mixing any parts sticking to the base or sides of the pot back with the vegetables. (Once the vegetables have browned somewhat, transferring them to a microwave oven can speed up the process).

http://i.imgur.com/1QqbOpi.jpg
Fry thoroughly

When the surface of the potatoes turns transparent, add the soup stock to the pot.

Simmering and Serving

After the soup stock has been added, heat strongly and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a low flame, add 2 large spoonfuls each of sugar, mirin and sake and simmer.

Simmer slowly while skimming the surface. When the potatoes have softened, add 2 large spoonfuls of soy sauce and put the lid on.

When amount of liquid has halved add 1 large spoonful of soy sauce and the snow peas. Simmer until the liquid has gone and you're done.

http://i.imgur.com/BxhATxx.jpg
Done!

The Meal from "That Day" is Complete!

http://i.imgur.com/MURwShy.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Tl0jxWr.jpg
[Left] The meal at the Hazuki residence
[Right] Remarkably sumptuous!

Aside from the simmered carrots, for a perfect recreation serve with white rice (heaped flatly), miso soup (nothing extraordinary; just containing tofu and wakame seaweed), cold tofu - divided into large pieces. katsuo [dried bonito shavings] topped with ginger, and a slice of grilled salmon. Bon appetit!

The Tasting

And so our "Meal at the Hazuki Residence" is ready, but just at the moment of tasting, [staff member] Takuan stubbornly refuses to eat! His reaction is just like Ryo's as a boy, as if to say "I don't like carrots"!

http://i.imgur.com/x8bERIj.jpg

On hearing this, the chef [author of this article] Nangoku Goro - who loves carrots - gets in a temper.

Nangoku Goro loves to lecture children. He can't let this go without saying a word or two.

"Takuan, while you're still sleeping in bed, farmers are working hard in the fields, carefully picking carrots, one by one. So how can you waste them like that?"

http://i.imgur.com/XRihymv.jpg

With these words, he encourages Takuan to eat his carrots, and...

"OK... I'll eat them."

Gathering his courage, Takuan takes the plunge and faces up to the hated carrots like a true man!

(By the way, carrots are rich in beta carotene, so eating them daily will help ward off old age and cancer).

-------

So, how did you like the "Meal at the Hazuki Residence"?

We checked with one of the Shenmue developers about the "Simmered Carrots", and it turns out that the dish should actually be Niku-jaga [simmered meat and potatoes, a popular Japanese dish] ^_^. From its appearance we weren't able to detect any meat so we didn't include it in the recipe, but when you are making "Simmered Carrots" at home you can turn it into the even more delicious Niku-jaga by adding 100g of thinly-sliced meat, 1 onion and 100g of "shirataki" noodles.

Re: Monaco Magic 2016 - Official Discussion Topic

What style for the fights ?
"I would like to get fights not too nervous like in Virtua Fighter, but more strategic with the use of the environment for instance. A lot of video game devs are working on. I really want physical chain reaction with falling elements and making fall other ones. I want to embed a mechanic where the enemies could find you and you could escape by leading them in a corridor to take them one by one instead fight all five of them at the same time which would be dangerous."

"In Shenmue I and II, I wanted to focus on the martial arts of North of China with their wide movements. In Shenmue III, it will be more South martial arts, more about the clinch, the velocity. I would like to put a lot of fights in close spaces like corridors or stairs."

"In very cinematographic video games like Shenmue, we often have combats like Virtua Fighter which are finally not very realistic. In Shenmue III, I want to be closer of realistic one of real life."

"Chai is one of my favorite characters so I would like to introduce him again. I think we'll reach a graphical level higher than I expected. He makes me think of Gollum from Lord of Rings. They're look alike a bit and are scary, very scary! He's not really attractive in appareance. I would enjoy to do little key rings with him."

About faces :
"I got many, many different opinions about the Ryo and Shenhua faces. I think people who waited 15 years have keep their faces in mind, I hope I can get closer to this. I'm still working on a lot and I will show you their new faces soon, they will look closer to the original idea."

Will be a Bad Ending ?
"In Shenmue III, there will be a close mechanic. There will be a limited time in some scenes and you could lose when it's over.

Re: Remove clipping in Shenmue II

I removed the boundaries and looked around if there's anything to find. As to be expected there was nothing there. Would've been too awesome if there were some leftover building structures behind the walls.
The screenshot gives a view at the whole ground level inside of the building from behind it.

It guess the building would've been accessible in the same manner as the Phoenix Bldg wich would've made it an interessting addition to Kowloon.

Re: Ryo's bicycle animations (What's Shenmue mod)

Ok, here they are - all of Ryo's bicycle animations extracted from Shenmue II's PLYBCYL.MOT file!

The core animations are the same as those found on the What's Shenmue disk, but this set is much more comprehensive and includes many variations. Some of the interesting new ones are:

⋅  [While standing next to bicycle] Ryo picks up the bicycle and turns it round 180 degrees.
⋅  [While seated] Ryo swings the bicycle round 180 degrees.
⋅ Ryo looks behind him and scoots the bicycle backwards a little way.
⋅ Ryo sits back and places a hand on his hips (perhaps when stopped and the player has not carried out any action for a while).
⋅ Ryo leans forward onto his left arm (wonder when this would be used?).
As you can see below, the animations of Ryo on an actual bicycle riding around Dobuita taken from the "What's Shenmue" VHS promo video match up pretty closely.

The process for generating each animation is still a bit manually intensive at the moment, but with some streamlining of the process it might be fun to investigate other animations stored in other files (even those of NPCs). Potentially there may be a lot of unused animations that have been left lying in the data.

Anyway, onto the riding animations from PLYBCYL.MOT...

(Edit 2016/10/08: moved the animations up to the OP for easier future reference.)

Ryo opens train door - unused animation

While digging around in a file of Ryo's animations I came across one that sounded interesting, named AKI_AKI_TRAIN_DOOR, so I hooked it up to trigger within the game. Here's how it looks:

http://i.imgur.com/txXYM44.gif
Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P5LAMxDSkg
Although it's a fairly straight-forward animation, from the naming my guess is that it may have been made for use in the "train" chapter that Yu Suzuki had planned for after Ryo left Hong Kong. The animation would fit for the situation when Ryo is moving between two carriages on a train through a sliding door (with the door sliding shut behind him).

Re: Removing the QTE sounds in Shenmue

Yeah, I remember, it was at the time when I made this video :D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTnhlmKY43Q
Very convincing! If I didn't know Ryo's character I would think it was straight from the game =D>

After spending a fair amount of time with Awave Studio (30-day trial version is a free download) I eventually managed to precisely locate and mute out the QTE sounds in the Shenmue SYSTEM1.SND file. In Awave Studio the sounds play at a different default speed & pitch than in the game so are a bit harder to recognize, plus the interface for playing and editing is pretty restricted so it took much longer than I'd expected. Oh yeah, the trial version of the software makes you restart after every file save too. #-o

After editing the soundwaves and resaving in the same format (Yamaha 4-bit ADPCM @8000Hz) I reinstated the header bytes from the original file since they are corrupted after saving from Awave. Finally I copied the file back on top of the original SYSTEM1.SND file in the MISC directory, and rebuilt the disk image to test. It worked nicely!

The modified SYSTEM1.SND can be downloaded here .

Quick video of the result:
https://youtu.be/dhlv_8Vgd2g

Although it would still be kind of nice to get the result without the hassle of editing the actual samples.

Re: Shenmue Dojo Twitch Channel - schedule & discussion

Thanks for the support guys. You have no idea how much it means to me. It's one of the things I look forward to every week now, and puts a smile on my face. I know it's a bit biased, but I feel nothing but amazing love and sensational Shenmue vibes from the chat and that's what I wanted to achieve from it on a personal level, for everyone involved, and as a small bit of progression for the Dojos social media presence. Just doing what i can for Shenmue, and the community. Zim will have part 2 ready to go on YouTube very soon, and as always, any ideas or comments, feel free to say and I will make sure they are considered. Please don't say get better at Hang-On.

Catch you all next week! :D

New Year's Greetings from YS Net

A short New Year's message from Yu Suzuki & the Shenmue III team has appeared on the official website:

New Year’s Greetings Everyone!

We hope you are having a holiday season. The development of Shenmue III has stepped into its second year, and our team is in high spirits.

Without your support, we would have not been able to make it this far. We thank you again for all you have done to make Shenmue III a reality.

We look forward to continuing our journey with you in 2017, and wish you a wonderful year ahead.

From Yu Suzuki and the Shenmue III Team

QTE Fail montage in HD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwkdCOXKJPU

Hey guys. I have a youtube channel that shows QTE fails in video games. I just released a QTE fail video about Shenmue! I made this video using the same method Mr357 used when he made his Shenmue Remastered movies. This was played using demul 0.7 with 3x resolution and the widescreen hack created by Esppiral , Masterchan777 , and Sappharad .

Thanks for being an awesome community that stuck around for so long. Hope you all enjoy!

Re: The quest for offline Passport access

I have downloaded what I think is a NTSC copy and opened the GDI in 2 different hex editors but when I run a search it doesn't find the hex sequence. I presume it's just a case of opening the GDI in the software and running a search from there?
Radar reported something similar earlier, and I checked it today and can clarify that this patch can't be applied directly to a GDI image of the disc.

It should be applied to either a CDI or MDF image of the Passport disc (currently NTSC only, with a PAL patch to follow shortly).

Further Update:

I've updated the patch instructions in the post to cover the PAL version as well as NTSC.

Re: The Shenmue Trivia Game: Season 2

Okay. :multi:

When Ryo picks up the "White Leaf" item in his father's secret basement he notices that there was something strange about it. What did Ryo say that was strange about the White Leaf?

Oh and I forgot to say 'welcome back' to you Radar. Welcome back. :beerchug:

Re: The Shenmue Trivia Game: Season 2

Correct! (Yes, I was looking for the fact that it is only available for use after completing the game once).
