I'm doing a remake of Ryo's room, everything is done from scratch, I don't reuse models and textures of original game, I used models only to respect the proportions

Because, before I was using Source Engine but I don't like this old engine and it's very difficult to do a "great" work, and before I have a big problem with proportion.

I want try an idea to import my work on Unity and maybe try a VR version of Shenmue, I love level design from this old game (1999 !!) and interaction, and I think this game in VR and HD would be great.

I started this project in the middle of last week (March 28) and I have learn to use Blender, it's like a training for me to remake Ryo's Room and maybe Hazuki Residence inside and outside.

And I want to thanks people who have ripped models because it's helped me a lot to do this work to have good size for modeling.

First of all, I'm glad they announced this.

On to the feedback:
1. Why are all of the Shenmue 1 screenshots in 4x3? We've already managed to patch the Dreamcast version to run in 16x9, so why can't they?
2. The voice clip in the trailer is from the Dreamcast original and not the original higher quality recordings present in Sega All Stars racing. While this isn't a big deal, if they have the original 44100hz recordings they should be using them.
3. Not featured in the trailer or hinted at in any way, but I hope they offer the original renderings for the music as an option now that they have room for them. (See Shenmue Online, Shenmue 3 interviews)

The updated watch in the HUD seems to ditch the Timex style. I'm guessing this is intentional and the port will lose some branding.

I have many but there is one that has hitted me hard with the video announcement.

Some of you may remember that I did some Widescreen hacks for Shenmue I & II, while I was at it I noticed, that during some custcenes, since characters aren't supposed to be seen they are frozen until they enter the supposed "viewable" area or they just simply pop out from nowhere or in some cases they just do some ramdom animations.

This happens a lot during Shenmue I and II, from the video below I've noticed that every single scene that corresponds to a cutscene its cropped to 4:3, so instead of tweaking the game they are doing the poorest and fastest of the ports.

My expectations are really low, even the official screenshots that have been posted on STEAM look worse than some emulations shots we all have been seen here.

Don't get me wrong I am happy that the games are getting a new life, but I guess SEGA's porpuse is to somehow reignite (no pun intended) the franchise but with such a poor job they will achive the opposite, and only us the hardcore fans will buy this.

Dorian - In reference to Aimless Gamer, let's calm down a bit here. It sounded like you were dismissing the pain and suffering of kids which is why Aimless Gamer is taking offense. If you didn't mean it that way, then please let him know it was an accidental slip.

As for your current stress over a lack of funds, I can fully understand where you're coming from and your difficulties shouldn't be dismissed either.

Everyone put the brakes on and please check your anger at the door.

My concern is that you see the intro to Shenmue 1 in 4:3... will the cutscenes not be in widescreen?
We see a Shenmue II cutscene in 16:9, and the trailer is split between 4:3 and 16:9 likely for the purposes of "old vs new" for the video.
Shenmue 2 cutscenes were always in 16x9. The fact that they go back to 4x3 at the end of the trailer doesn't make sense. "Sorry, we're going old again even though we're trying to show you the remastered game"

Since it was already mentioned - In Sonic Adventure 2's case, they had to keep some cutscenes in 4x3 because those scenes contained video overlays on top of the in-game rendering used for certain effects. The original videos were only 4x3 and it's likely that they didn't have the means or budget to try and re-create them. In Shenmue's case everything was in-engine so they should have the means to fix the cutscenes.

Esspiral is right though, there's no excuse for them not to fix it. We could do it for them if we ever figured out the cutscene format. I know it's just work in progress but we might as well notice these things now because if they make it all the way to release then they're not going to fix them. I want to see the game in the best condition they can put it in given the constraints. We know they're listening, so let's make sure when they do make changes they aren't sloppy.

So if I'm reading this correctly you believe they've removed the letterboxing and just "blew up" the image remaining to fill the screen for the 16:9 shot in the trailer. Am I understanding that right?
No? Your description of my statement makes it sound like you think that I think that there's additional information added to the scene. What I'm saying is that it's the original content, but formatted to fill a 16x9 because they don't need to letterbox anymore. If you compare it side-by-side, it's the same. They don't need to do anything to update Shenmue 2's cutscenes content for 16x9 because they were already 16x9.

No it's not, unless you misinterpret the intentions. If the same thing were true after the game releases we'd just be making the same comments then. Might as well make them now so there's a chance they can see it's something they might want to consider in case they didn't plan on fixing it.

We're not crying "oh this is wrong the game is going to be bad because of these things", it's "here are some flaws we see with the work in progress that you've shown us, we hope you fix those before you're done".
Frankly it's just the conceit of this thread, being that within 24 hours of getting something we've all campaigned for over years and years, we're already picking holes in it and finding negativity. Especially when "WIP" was clearly listed on the trailer, and as per Adam Koralik we only know "5%" of the full story of what's happening with this remaster. We couldn't even go a day without a thread like this popping up.

And I don't buy the constructive criticism angle when the OP post is already declaring this a poor job and somehow worse than emulation.
It's not worse than emulation, going back through the thread nobody even said that. I would not have wanted them to emulate this, they are doing the right thing by porting it. I can see looking at other threads today that you and several others are getting personally offended by pointing out their opinions on what was shown so far and nobody's even attacking you. I'm sorry that you're upset, but there's no harm in talking about this. You don't need to defend the team, everyone posting here can read, so they saw the disclaimer that you're keen to point out. You're exactly right, we don't know what Sega's plans are for this, which is why we are sharing our thoughts on what we've seen so far.

I guess I'm also coming at this from a different perspective than you. I didn't find the opening post to be negative, it doesn't imply to me that he thinks it's bad. I don't think it's bad either. There has been some negativity here this weekend, especially with Peter fighting with that Polish guy that he eventually banned, but I didn't notice anyone disparaging the work that has been done. We've been through a similar situation already over the past 7 months regarding Shenmue 3's character models. They look fine to me, but other people are not satisfied yet. I'm not going to argue with other people about what they think, that's their decision, but I'm willing to talk about it to find out why they feel that way.

My entire point can be summarized as this: I personally hope they put an effort into presenting the first game's cutscenes in 16x9. The video shows that might not have done that, or didn't do it yet. If they don't it's not a big deal, but it would be a shame given the circumstances. Please don't take it personally.

DC version without the framedips and aliasing would be perfect imo.

While I agree, the Xbox version looks stunning emulated at 4k.

It already looks better than the HD port imho.

This is the most important question to me right now. Will we see a return of all the features on the Passport Disc?

It was one of my dearest wishes to see the leaderboards and stuff go active again, there is loads of extra replay value if they bring this all back. The old urgent messages section could be used to bring in Shenmue III news, if the games releases are far enough apart.

It will definately take them quite a lot of extra effort to deliver this but man do I hope they do!

My concern is Shenmue 2 will attempt a software version of the XBOX's anti-aliasing that gave the game too soft a picture. I know I'm in the minority here, but I found Shenmue IIx unplayable as a result of the image softness which created a lot of blurr. Text in the beginning credits was difficult to read. This was compounded if you had an earlier Xbox because they used a worse video encoder.

Hoping for a nice hard, sharp picture. It would be nice to play Shenmue 2 in English for the first time.
It wasn't the anti-aliasing that causes the "soft" picture, it was the overuse of bloom lighting. The anti-aliasing was great, and very much improved the picture quality. The bloom lighting was overused, and during the day caused everything to kind of "glow", which I didn't like. It was phenomenal at night, though, with all the neon signs.

The motion blur is it's own thing, not connected to either the anti-aliasing or bloom lighting. I didn't like that, either. Made fights look like blurry messes.

However, even if they're using the Xbox version as a base,it would be easy enough for them to dial back the bloom lighting and motion blur. There are mods for the Xbox version that turn them off entirely, and those were made without access to the source code.

So I was digging around the internet, and found some gameplay footage from Shenmue Online that I had never seen before. I thought it was the TGS 2005 footage, but it is different. Apparently, this is from T2 Technology Holdings' 2005 strategic conference on November 15th, 2004. Interesting stuff.

I can understand you are trying to keep excessive trolling out of the site, but may I ask what is exactly the level of shitposting acceptable in here from now on? The Haruto guy might have been a previous offender but the way I see it now his posts are pretty harmless specially when stacked with his contribution to the gaming section with new trailers and news. So once members are banned, will they be lockout for life? Do we get any warnings? Shouldnt the forum have some kind of guideline for tone and humour acceptable while posting? I don't get why even old time regulars Himuro and Bluecast were banned (or remain so). 3 of the screenshots that are in the dark / at night look way too bright, like they were taken during the day. Ren from the donation scene, Ryo & Nozomi on the bench, and the scene in Beverly Hills Wharf especially doesn't look as dark as I'd expect.

I really hope the screenshots they just posted are outdated ones and the lighting isn't severely messed up in the ports.

Edit: It has been confirmed via the latest trailer that those screenshots were indeed outdated! The lighting is correct in the July 3rd trailer. (Also, the video I pulled the Dreamcast shots from was too dark)

You know what, I actually will concede and apologise because you are right on that. That apology also extends to anyone who also feels I have spoken to them in a disrespectful manner. I have been upset lately. Not upset, that would be the wrong word. Extremely stressed and under pressure would be a better way to word it, and whilst I could post a list of all the stuff that's going on right now on a daily basis, I would. But I am certainly not going to pander for any sort of sympathy.

When it comes to comments made about HD on these forums it honestly makes my blood boil on what could be argued, an unjustifiable level. So with that in mind I think it's fair to say that I shouldnt come onto these boards with a shitty attitude. Redream is a work-in-progress 64bit Dreamcast emulator for Windows, Mac and Linux that's getting a lot of attention lately, and for very good reasons.

One of the best features of Redream, is simplicity. It's one of the most simple and straightforward emulators, as it runs directly without the need to have a Dreamcast bios or to go through a complicated configuration process. It also detects and auto-configures many popular controllers like Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4 controllers.

Another advantage Redream has over other Dreamcast emulators, is that it's being actively developed. The lead developer is actively working on improving and debugging the code, and he has expressed to me a special interest in improving compatibility with Shenmue games further.

Redream comes in two flavours: a free Lite option and a Premium which can be licenced for $5. Both flavours share basically the main features, except for high-res rendering which is enabled in the Premium version.

When enabled, high-res rendering makes a huge difference in terms of visual fidelity. I have been testing Shenmue running in 4K with widescreen and no-clipping fixes by Esppiral, and the main game looks and plays beautifully from start to finish. Redream has a clear edge in raw performance over every other Dreamcast emulator I've used to date, and the latest build performed exceptionally well in high-res on my mid-range PC.

In terms of compatibility with Shenmue games, What's Shenmue is playable however, I noticed some audio and frame pacing issues, the first Shenmue is almost fully playable without any issues, the only thing missing is Hang On arcade game which is not yet supported, but the developer is aware of those issue and they should eventually be fixed.

Another really neat feature I noticed in Redream is the ability to uncap the framerate on-the-fly to fast-forward emulation, which is conveniently mapped to the menu button of the Xbox One controller, this feature can be extremely useful in almost getting rid of loading screens and make loading times almost non-existent with a press of a button.

Sound emulation is decent enough but not perfect yet, I noticed some sound issues especially in some cut-scenes and Shenmue Passport sections, the developer is aware of those issues and told me that they are being worked on.

Official discs of Shenmue II currently boot fine with Redream, and the game is playable in its letterboxed format and in 4K, except for some of the arcade games which aren't supported yet. Widescreen-fixed discs of Shenmue II have currently loading issues with Redream, this has been already reported to the developer and I will provide an update once this has been fixed.

In conclusion, Redream is a great Dreamcast emulator highly recommended to anyone looking for an easy-to-use and powerful piece of software to replay Dreamcast games.

The author of redream pulled a real asshole move with that project in December.

He started it as an open source project, then basically decided that having it open source would prevent him from ever licensing it to a company or something stupid like that. So he took the project and moved it private, which killed updates to the RetroArch plug-in for it in the process. It's one thing to ask for money for your work (I'm not denying that he should be able to ask for money if he wants to) but completely cutting off the ability for others to use the latest code was a petty move on his part. I stumbled upon this situation earlier in the year when I was looking for an emulator to modify for testing purposes, and started avoiding it once I realized what he did since it was stupid.

Now you might be thinking, "well, if the project is open source then what prevents someone from just compiling it their own copy for free?", but this same situation exists with many other projects so it's not really a valid concern and I don't think it was his primary intention anyway. For example, the paid iOS audio player Modizer is open source, and I've contributed DSF related changes to it in the past. I felt the author deserved to be paid for his work and so I bought it, even though I can (and have) just compile my own builds. The macOS text editor TextMate works the same way, it's a $60 product yet the source code is freely available. The people who are willing to pay for it will still buy it regardless of whether they can get it for free or not.

Anyway, in this scenario, while the emulator is somewhat good for what you want to use it for it's just worth noting that the author has a history of changing his mind on licensing matters and nothing prevents him from screwing you over in the future. I wish there was just a good multi-platform open source DC emulator, as right now reicast seems to be the best option that fits that criteria right now sadly.

Had a bit of a play with this last night and it's improved a lot since the last time I used it (when you actually had to sign up to download it for whatever reason).

It's very convenient. You literally just select a game and go. Not having to load a BIOS or even bind your controller buttons is a huge step forward in making Dreamcast emulation (which is fairly difficult to get right for newcomers) more accessible.

Emulation is solid; out of the games I tried I only encountered a handful of minor gameplay bugs and one game breaking bug (although I suspect a bad rip of the game is to blame for this). There are a few graphical glitches here and there but that's to be expected in an emulator this new and it's nothing that really took away from the experience.

However, by far the biggest problem I had with it was the sound emulation. It's awful and it needs major improvements. Across all the games I tested all of them suffered from audio glitches that made the experience ultimately unenjoyable. Sound and music suffered from issues such as playing too loud, not playing at all, stacking up, distortion and not ending when it should. For example in Sonic Adventure's Windy Valley level, the wind ambience would play much louder than it's supposed to and drown out the music and sound effects (the same effect was in all the levels, but I felt that Windy Valley was most noticeable). You can also hear the 'stacking' effect by activating Tikal which plays a sound effect multiple times and distorts the audio. Obviously I expect this to be fixed in subsequent versions and I get that the main priority is getting the emulator stable, but it's a shame as at the current time it's the one thing that stops me from recommending Redream to emulator newcomers who want to try out Dreamcast games.

Also, something about charging for an emulator kind of rubs me the wrong way. I get that developers should be able to be paid for their work but offering a 'premium' version and paywalling certain features just feels sketchy. I'd much rather the developer just adds a 'pay-what-you-want'/donation button instead.

All in all though, I'm really impressed. Some hard work has obviously gone into this and I can't wait until they sort out the sound issues.

Original Shenmue 2 Full English Xbox Speech mod for Sega Dreamcast (aka Smith releases) which can be found here has incorrect disc information data (aka meta-data), and this data is usually used by Dreamcast hardware as well as emulators and some debuggers to correctly detect the played disc. This can be useful in correctly identifying game title, region and disc number etc ...

With the original Smith release, discs cannot be correctly identified and that could cause some issues in some cases, so I made this simple fix for that.

After applying the fix, the correct meta-data is restored to each disc so emulators (like Redream) can correctly identify each disc, download the correct title cover and sort it in the correct order in the library.

I've basically made three patches for the 80min, 99m, and 1GB versions of Smith release. I've also made another three patches to correct discs meta-data and add Esppiral's widescreen fix as well.

To use the patch:

1- Make sure to download the correct patch for your Smith release from the download links below.

2- Extract the zip file and copy the four cdi image files from the correct Smith release into the extracted folder.

3- The patch uses the original disc names as they were originally included in Smith release, if your disc image files are named differently please rename them before applying the patch.

4- Run patch.bat file .. and follow on-screen instructions.

5- Fixed discs will be created in "fixed" folder.
