When Suzuki talked about 16 chapters

0) The explanation :
Thanks a French article , I now understand why he talked about 16 chapters. In fact, it has always been 11+5 chapters. The 5 chapters were bridges between the main chapters. That's why we had the boat and the train as unique chapters.

--------

1) From the Dreamcast Official US magazine 2000 November uploaded by Telekill ( http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48738 )

Shenmue 1 : Chapter 1 to 5
Shenmue 2 : Chapter 6 to 10
Shenmue 3 : Chapter 11 to 16
with Shenmue 3 supposed to be the last episode.

http://nsa37.casimages.com/img/2015/08/21/150821083353227599.jpg

2) Then we got this image from AM2 according Shenmue Master
http://shenmueangel.free.fr/images/le-site/faq/chapitres.gif
and the following informations :
Chapter 1 Yokosuka
Chapter 2 The boat (cancelled)
Chapter 3 Aberdeen
Chapter 4 Wan Chai
Chapter 5 Kowloon
Chapter 6 Guilin
Chapter 7
Chapter 8
Chapter 9
Chapter 10
Chapter 11
Chapter 12
Chapter 13
Chapter 14
Chapter 15
Chapter 16

3) Then the 16 chapters became 11 in 2014 :

4) The last Yu's tweet answer after the kickstarter :
http://nsa37.casimages.com/img/2015/08/21/15082108550546161.jpg
https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/617157839539212288

5) Nico Nico interview https://youtu.be/IntCDAc6c8Y?t=50m00s (from Switch's translation)

Chapter 1 Yokosuka.
Chapter 2 Hong Kong
Chapter 3 Train (cancelled)
Chapter 4 ?? Arrival at Guilin (moved within Chapter 2) ??
Chapter 5 Meeting Shenhua (moved or partially moved within Chapter 2)
Chapter 6 Meeting Shenhua
Chapter 7
Chapter 8
Chapter 9
Chapter 10
Chapter 11

To be precise, Shenmue I is the whole of Chapter 1, as is. And Shenmue II corresponds with the Hong Kong chapter. The part about meeting Shenhua was originally in Chapters 5 and 6. I moved just the part about meeting her to Shenmue II. Actually Chapter 3 was on a train. The scenes take place inside a train. So Chapter 3 hasn’t been used at all. In total there are 11 chapters, and so I could properly visualize how they would fit together, the first thing I did was to make a novel. So that's the form I put them in, and I use it as a base reference. It's not meant to represent the exact scenarios for the game, though. I don't use it to decide "this event goes here, this quest goes here, this flag gets set here" and so on. It doesn’t directly dictate the scenarios for the game. Rather, it's one of the things I use to drive the scenarios for Shenmue. With Shenmue III, even if I forcibly took the story through to the end of Chapter 11, well... You see, I make decisions to keep or exclude various parts as I go along. Now, at this point I don't know whether Shenmue III will have 30 hours of play time or 60 hours, but if the story is forced to advance along, I could tell that this wouldn’t produce a satisfactory result as a game. So, although unfortunately the story won’t reach the end with Shenmue III, it was a decision I made for the sake of the game's quality.

6) Mon Aug 31, 2015 Kickstarter interview
http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49016
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/posts/1336892
Question : Can you tell us more about the composition stage?
Yu Suzuki : Shenmue III is based on the 11 chapters created 17 years ago (1998), and each chapter is set in different regions. For example, the first chapter was set in Yokosuka, second was set in Hong Kong and so on. However with Shenmue III it won't do to complete just one chapter's worth in one region, so I have restructured the underlying story to fit the budget.

EVen though I'm not one of the "anti-feminists" in this topic, that story today about how they are thinking of introducing women-only carriages on trains made me splenetic with rage when I heard it.
Then I saw the story being shared about FB with tons of comments (weirdly from loads of males) saying how it's a really good idea and how it should help with the struggles of existing as a female in modern UK society.

I am rapidly losing the will to live in this world, no joke.

Buy from Ebay then, prices are still cheap, infact ridiculously so. It's easy to find a DC w hookups, 2x controllers, and a VMU for like 50-60 bucks.

A great idea for Shenmue 3(a tournament system)

Know what I would love, is if there was a optional tournament you can join(on a regular bases, but perhaps have some special side quests hidden within it as well). This would make a sweet alternative option to just practicing, you could regularly practice in a actual combat situation, not to mention this could be another way to make money, and win items/move scrolls.

Re: A great idea for Shenmue 3(a tournament system)

I'd love tournaments like that, but also simpler fight clubs, and punks trying to mug you on the street or bars ala Yakuza, all of which would build your reputation kinda like II, and make you earn money. Would be nice if the more advanced you are, tougher enemies would challenge you around the streets and in tournaments.

If you do a lot of fighting, it gets more complex and challenging, if you don't, you keep a normal difficulty throughout the game. Yu, as mentioned in the combat thread, doesn't want it to be too hard, so by doing that, people that love challenge and people that don't would be happy.

Re: A great idea for Shenmue 3(a tournament system)

Tournaments only represent the "best" but joining one does not inherently make it a selfish act. I think building pride is important, having too much is a bad thing of course, but too little is just as bad. Testing ones skills against other masters shouldn't be considered inherently prideful an act, so long as one is going into with that in mind only. That's very different than trying to show off. Also, martial arts have a history of tournaments, and are a fundamental element of getting better.

Re: A great idea for Shenmue 3(a tournament system)

Isn't there a whole sub-plot in Shenmue 2 about not using martial arts just for show?
A tournament would be ever so slightly at odds with that lesson.

http://oi61.tinypic.com/2gt0rh3.jpg

Not necessarily. Technically, the monks at that martial arts temple are showing off by your definition because they're practicing in public.

It's all about intention.

If you go into martial arts tournament to test yourself, or to honor your style, how in the world are you showing moves off recklessly?

This is a lot different from living homeless as a street performer, and using your martial arts as a leech to your advantage to show off your moves instead of an honest living.

You also forget that in II, Ryo participates in public street fights and spars with Jianmin regularly in a public park.

You would be right, if Ryo went into the tournament with the mindset that he's the best, and that he needs to show that to the world, and that no one else can beat him, in a wild display of arrogance and hubris, which is something Ryo wouldn't do. But even then, Xiuying makes it clear that Ryo does not yet have all the Wude, so learning about them further in the journey seems a pretty natural step.

Original Post.

Hi, I am just crazy and I can't stop getting involved in new things.

Right now I need help to test Shenmue II on Xbox, this is a quick and dirt attempt to make the game run Widescreen and/or at 720, hex editing the default.xbe.

I need people with a softmoded Xbox, an HDTV cable and if possible, an upgraded ram Xbox.

The goal is mainly to achieve propper widescreen support, 720p is a plus.

My setup is somehow a mess ( Xbox v1.6....) so my console hangs at the first loading screen. I could be either bad video config on my end or just that the Xbox ran out of ram, so that's why I ask for upgraded ram xbox to test, anyway anyone can test and post their results.

Here it is the default resolution.

http://i.imgur.com/QYM9F9z.png

And here the widescreen 853x480 one.

http://i.imgur.com/fEPMISe.png

As said my Xbox hangs at this screen and I need people with different set ups to test it.

853x480 .xbe

Just drag and drop the default xbe on the root of the game and overwrite, remember to make a backup of your original .xbe just in case.

Thanks.

Story Arcs in Shenmue III and Beyond

As of right now, we know with some certainty that Shenmue III won't end the series, and that we'll likely see its conclusion in a fourth game. In a typical trilogy, the second installment is when the protagonist(s) is at their lowest point, aka- when all of the "bad stuff" happens. Two perfect examples of this are Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers . In both of these scenarios, even the title has a bad connotation. Within these particular films, the main characters reach their lowest points, whether it be desperation, depression, fear, anger, etc. Obviously this didn't happen in Shenmue II, so I expect to see it in III.

What are your predictions? Any more deaths? An attitude change from Ryo? A betrayal? I imagine Ryo will have a near-death experience as a result of the Chi You Men, similar to Luke Skywalker's encounter with Darth Vader.

Amazing Acts of Kindness from Strangers

So has this thing ever happened to you? The kind of moment when a stranger unexpectedly helps you out in an everyday situation or just does something really helpful or awesome for you without expecting anything in return.

I think they probably just do it because they're awesome people but when it happens, those people totally make my day. The kind of experience which at least parly restores your faith in humanity.

Here's an example which happened to me once:

1. I was at this metal concert once, standing in a crowd of something like 40k people. I don't know what exactly happened but suddenly my throat went really dry and I had to cough very hard. I was there with a friend who was just getting us a new round of drinks, so I was alone at that moment. A guy who was moshing with some other guys stopped and tapped me on the shoulder from behind saying "Are you OK, dude? Can I help you?" The cough went out and I told him I was fine and thanked him.

How cool was that? And it gets better: A couple of minutes later the cough came back and that time, two college girls standing next two me asked me if I needed help. I first thought they were scared of me puking on them, so I said "Don't worry ladies, I'm not drunk, I'm not gonna puke. I'm driving today," to which they replied "Nooooo, we didn't mean it that way! We just wanna make sure you're OK." A few minutes later again, my friend came back with a water for me and a beer for himself. After a few sips of water I was fine again. But still, within five minutes or so, I had three complete strangers offering to help me out. After the show, while driving back home, I told my friend about what happened while he was getting drinks and we were both moved by how kind-hearted some people are.

What are some of your experiences whith strangers which were awesome?

Re: Amazing Acts of Kindness from Strangers

@Amiga : The scene you described sounds so eerie... Makes me uncomfortable just reading it. Glad you did something and on top of that still had the balls to testify to the police. I have a lot of respect for that. Seems like a normal thing every grown up person would do but sadly, it is far from that.

Hmmm, yeah maybe people being in a place because they want to be has a lot to do with people's willingness to help. But I have experienced an awesome display of humanity in a place where people have to be before. Haven't written it in my OP because I wasn't directly involved but maybe this story can give you hope, so here we go.

3 or 4 years back, I had a student job in a different part of town when I was still in university. As class mostly didn't go out before 3 or 4 pm I always had to work late to make my hours. So every day I worked I had to make kind of a lengthy subway ride back home (about 40 minutes). One night I was sitting on the train back home at like 10 pm. The train was almost empty due to the time because it was a week day's night.

Then this nasty drunk fuck got on the train. He could barely stand on his feet and sank into a seat. A woman in her 40s was sitting in a seat right opposite from where he was sitting, on the opposite side of the aisle. I was on the same side of the aisle as her, about 5 meters away from the lady. Then suddenly the drunk bastard started talking bullshit to that lady. He didn't sexually harrass her but aksed some really stupid questions, like what has she got in her handbag and did she go shopping that day, etc. He also said some real creepy stuff about killing animals. He was talking very loudly and you could see the woman getting more and more uncomfortable.

So I looked around and there was just an old lady and a college girl in that compartment which both couldn't have done shit against that drunk idiot. The drunk guy was a lot bigger than me but given the fact that he was piss drunk it looked like I could take him on. So I thought to myself "If things go out of hand it boils down to me. I gotta help her!". I was making plans in my head, trying to make eye contact with the lady trying to tell her that I'd get her out of there if he was gonna walk over to her. I would probably have told the drunk dickhead to fuck off and would have just taken the woman to the other end of the train or something like that, to avoid physical confrontation as long as possible.

But before anything happened a guy showed up. He must have come from an angle of the train I had not seen. It was a dude in his 20s, looking like your average conservative working class or lower middle class guy.;-) . He didn't look tough at first but then he took off his jacket and revealed some very muscular arms underneath. He sat down right next to the drunk guy and faced him, looking him right into the eye. The drunkard got scared shitless and said something like "No man, please don't do it!". The good guy didn't say anything and didn't do anything. He just faced the drunkard. The drunkard didn't say one more word, the woman got off at her stop, everything went fine.

That incident gave me a lot of hope back then. I was just glad there are people who have the balls and the decency to help weaker ones in trouble. To be fair, not everyone has arms like he does but another problem is that most people aren't even aware of others needing help because they're too busy staring at their fucking phone. One thing is the ability to help, the other is the social empathy which makes you do it.

Kind of a long story and it's just a personal experience but maybe this can give you some hope.

Re: Amazing Acts of Kindness from Strangers

It amazes me how many people will stand by and watch shit without stepping in like the above post. My old man once see some drunk guy harassing two women at a bus stop and when he had a word with him the guy took a swing at him but my dad managed to get him to the ground and hold him there while he waited for the police. This was in the middle of a town centre where everyone else was just watching or walking past. Everyone clapped him afterwards and he just called them a bunch of embarrassing cowards.

My family came from South East London in the 60's and 70's which was filled with working class people who worked hard to make a living and weren't afraid to say if they felt something was wrong. Having grown up in a household with that environment I notice how much people try to avoid any confrontation and aren't used to being called out on bullshit or told when they're acting like arseholes. If someone try's to cut in line for something I seem to be the only one to tell them to join the back and people seem shocked when I call them out on not saying thank you when I hold open a door for them.

I used to work for a lovely old lady who I would honestly say is the nicest person I've ever known. When the shop she ran got broken into 3 times and we knew who it was it amazed me how many people wouldn't help us take matters into our own hands when she had done so much for them in the past.

It really quite saddens me that with this question all I can think of is times I've seen shit and I seem to be the only one to step in. How not even a group of 3 or 4 people will step into the middle of a guy whose about to hit a woman sickens me.

Re: Amazing Acts of Kindness from Strangers

I can't think of any that happened to me off the top of my head but once when my wife and I went to Disney World there was a little boy, probably around 7 years old, crying at the front turnstiles of Magic Kingdom and I thought, "Nobody cries at Disney World." So I asked him what was wrong. It was obvious he was really upset, but I guess in the hustle and bustle of people trying to enter the park, nobody noticed him. He told me he lost his dad. So I went to a cast member and told them the boy's father was lost(children aren't lost at Disney, only parents). I stayed with him until they could find his dad. Turns out, "Dad of the Year" had gone on into the park without him. I saw the kid later and he was having fun. Felt like smacking the dad though.

I live in the south though, where southern hospitality is a part of life. So it would probably take a lot for me to really notice someone going the extra mile. I still hold the door open for women and children, and if it's a guy I'll hold it until they can get it. I guess it goes back to the Golden Rule for me.

Re: Amazing Acts of Kindness from Strangers

Good karma is good karma. Bad karma will come back with interest..

Glad you have some good stories, make sure you share the love when opportunity presents.

I saw this old korean man struggling with a heavy trolley while crossing the road on a down hill slope. I went to help him to save him from hitting a car and gain control of the trolley.

He suddenly froze and gave me a dirty look as if I was going to steal his trolley.. I asked if he was OK and he waved me away suspiciously.. so I just turned and walked off, lol'ing inside. Sometimes people don't want random acts of kindness. :rotflmao:

Re: Amazing Acts of Kindness from Strangers

i'm a violent person by nature, or should i say, RESOLVE! (very few folks where words and reasoning count, so the extra 'talk' is usually a last resort.)
...
i have no hope, but i do recognize results, and the more positive they are, the better for us all at the end of the day.
in any case, thanks for sharing.

Nothing wrong with being a bit violent or at least resolved as long as one doesn't attack people, especially weaker ones. :D Another big factor in this "looking away" problem Riku and you described is that most mothers (and fathers as well) in modern western societies educate their daughters to be men (or at least to try to emulate qualities which a sane person would consider as typically masculine) while they educate their sons to be essentially pussies.

But I'll leave it at that for now. This is going too far off topic. :king:

Finally finished Disc 2...

... at least , since I got the pal version, more than one year ago. The first time I played S2 it was a lot like a speed run because was a burnt copy, and I was very afraid to break my DC.

Now with an original copy I had time and was totally determined to get the maximum dialogues and cutscenes possible; this disc appears to be the one with more things to miss if not aware.

I got almost everything, but I lost some minor itens, and others not so minor...

From all I got, first, I had converted my savefile from S1 and started S2 with lotsa money, and bought a lot of figures and zippos before Wong stole my bag. But, I didn't get all the itens possible.

Then there is the Fangmei sidequest, the main reason to get stuck in disc to for hours. I finished S1 one day or two after/before new year in game time (I don't remember exactly), so Ryo arrived in Hong Kong very early. Make time pass until Fangmei' birthday was really... intense. Played a lot of arcade games, darts... at least there are many things to do, or simply missing the chawan sign for fast forward too.

Got the three medals, and wished that Eileen and Izumi were available for fighting everytime.

Lost the second QTE for Poison Brothers, so they get very arrogant towards Ryo.

Learned the Brawling uppercut, kenka upper. And while listened Delin saying it, wondered if its name isn't a tribute for a move in ye olde SoR2. And of course, let him fall in the water too.

Got my pocket full of money and Cool Z took me right to Ren, so when I talked to Joy later, it was too late for have that conversation about Guizhang.

In the last day I really took my time, so, when I get the final scene with Ren, it was well past midnight, and the scene at dark gets really cool, you at night dealing with thugs, it really fits better at night than at midday.
I noticed that the moon ingame had phases. Didn't noticed this before the last two nights ingame.

Said goodbye to Fangmei, really sweet scene.
Said goodbye to Izumi too, and wished that Ryo had allowed her to spend the time she wished with him... She was really sad.

I don't know how many hours I spent playing, probably tens, just this disc. But it worth it! Playing through vga and good headphones, it is the best way to experience the Shenmue-do!

I will took a good breath before start disc 3, taking my time, there is a long time until 2017...
