Haha, it just comes across as funny now we've been waiting 14 years for Shenmue 3. I was making the point that the trip to Bailu Village could take 2 days, or your entire life :D...most people never expected to ever reach there, but now we'll finally get there, but it didn't take us 2 days, or our entire life, it was 17 and a half years :D

Yes sir. The ones Nico sent me worked right away the first try no issues at all. I burnt with Alcohol 120% at lowest burn speeds which on my burner is 16x.

Archive of Shenmue Passport content?

I was wondering if anyone ever got around to archiving any/all of the Shenmue Passport textual content? I along with some other GameFAQs members attempted this feat back in 2002. I was just going through some of my old files and noticed I have a lot of that data in text format, including character profiles (which I see some are available on the Dojo but I believe those were in some of the guides), descriptions of places, and things like Nozomi's Messages.

Does anyone know if this data is out there at all? If not I would love to contribute it to make it available somewhere. I originally started a website called Yokosuka City many years ago and originally planned to publish the data there but I stopped updating it eventually.

It was fascinating how much backstory was created for the series, and unfortunate to see it all disappear with the closing of the Passport.

The problem with the linked video is that it seems to have been taken after the servers were actually taken down, since a lot of the profile text states that the data cannot be retrieved. Nearly all of the written text for the Passport content was stored server-side, and was never on the disc. Thus it's not available now.

The project I along with some other GameFAQs users took on was to transcribe all of that information. I believe we ended up getting all of the Places descriptions finalized, some of the scroll information, the people (although this information was in the guide already), and Nozomi's Messages but not sure if that's complete since it was always randomized.

I guess if the owner of the site is interested in putting this data up I would be more than happy to pass it along.

Are you going to buy Shenmue III when it comes out even if..

...you've backed the game and will get a digital/physical copy as reward?

As for me, I'm definitely going to buy the digital version day one.

Mainly for two reasons beeing:
1. The sales number of Shenmue III will be crucial in order to ensure support from a Publisher for SIV (if the story doesn't come to an end in Shenmue III) and I want to give my little contribution to reach this goal.
Get ready to spread #SaveShenmue4 already :mrgreen:

2. I highly doubt the backers will receive their rewards before or even on day one.

Shenmue Dojo Site Fixes

Shenmue Dojo has been updated again on the back end, it's now functioning one hundred percent as it should. There shouldn't be any issues with cookies, logging in, registration or anything else at this point. Every browser is supported, including Microsoft's new Edge browser which is included with Windows 10.

OUYE - A new console on the horizon

Anyone looking for an integration of PS4 and Xbox One (at least in appearance), so we can end all fanboy console wars, there's a new crowdfunding for a Chinese game console named OUYE.

Here are the details:

-This is an Android Micro Console being developed by a Shenzhen company

- It will be a bit more powerful than the Ouya but the specs are a bit dated.

-Kickstarter will open later this month with $15k as the target goal

-Console is expected to cost around $70 to buy with one controller

-The console has had negative feedback from Chinese netizens because this rip off is very very blatant.

-The company said it took them 1 year and 3 months to get this product ready to ship and they spent “6 months on the unique design”..... yes.... unique design.

It might be a surprise to some, but China has a long history developing their own gaming consoles, as seen here:

Dorimaga 2001 Interview w/ Yu Suzuki & others

This is a translation of an article that was published in the September 2001 edition of the Dorimaga magazine. In it, Yu Suzuki and some of the Japanese voice actors talk about the completion of Shenmue II (released for the Dreamcast in Japan during the month this article was published) including some of the content that had to be cut from the release, and reflect back on their experiences over the previous 5 years they spent on the Shenmue project.

Part of this article (about Chapter 2) was translated by Kiyuu and discussed back in 2003. Also a short manga version of the Chapter 2 boat scenario is included as unlockable content on the Xbox version of Shenmue II.

Compared to the previous episode, “Chapter One - Yokosuka”, the townsfolk of Shenmue II seem friendlier. The game gives the impression that it has been made to address some of the areas that had room for improvement in the first game, as if to acknowledge that some may find it off-putting if everyone were to give you the cold shoulder like in Shenmue I. Some people may already have completed Shenmue II in its entirety, but this interview covers a range of topics, including things that people who have finished the game will also want to hear about.

Suzuki: To film those TV commercials we went over to Shanghai, although in the near future we plan to show commercials that will feature actual screens from the game. I think showing some of the gameplay will help attract ordinary members of the public to the game.

Matsukaze: You know, Hagiwara-san and I actually appear in one of those commercials, but probably no one’s noticed. (laughs) And we're really acting, too!

Hagiwara: Right. People who have played Shenmue II are sure to recognize that we’re acting the bit where we lie in wait for Yuan. There are several different episode variations of the commercial, and they’re fun to watch. In the one with the old man, he was pretty shaky on his feet, so we had to film using a high-speed camera to make it look as though he was standing steadily. Gee, that old man was wobbling all over the place. (laughs)


Release of Shenmue II

Q: With Shenmue II going on sale soon, how do you all feel about that? You've been involved with Shenmue for a really long period of time.

Suzuki: We’ve been through a lot to get here, but for me I think the main thing is to have created something that will be loved by the people who play the game. Recently that’s all I’ve been thinking about. So I’m extremely keen to hear everyone’s comments. Right now it’s the only thing on my mind. (laughs)

Matsukaze: For me, I started my “countdown” about a month ago. It hasn’t felt that long, but I’ve been willing it to get here faster. (laughs)

Suzuki: I think the way the game has been put together is pretty unusual these days. For example, the shop interiors have been created down to the last inch. I don’t think any other game pays such ridiculous attention to detail. “Shenmue: The Movie”, which is playing right now, has that same flavor.

Q: It really has been a long project, hasn’t it. The voice actors have also been involved for ages; how long has it been?

Matsukaze: I’ve been playing the role of Ryo since the days of the Saturn. All up, I’ve been acting the part for just over 5 years.

Q: Did those 5 years feel long?

Hagiwara: It felt long! For one thing, an enormous amount of time was spent on filming, but it also took a long time for it to be incorporated into the actual game. We captured an endless amount of motion footage, and even after the voice recordings had been done, the creation of the game still had to be done. It seemed like the release day would never be reached.

Suzuki: Well, the software implementation side was tough too! After writing the software there was a huge checklist to be run through – I wish I had it here to show everyone! (laughs) There was a line chart that showed the number of check items decreasing; there were more than 10,000 items to check and it seemed endless.

Q: By the way, how many times larger is Shenmue II compared to Shenmue I?

Suzuki: I don’t know exactly, but I'd say easily 3 or 4 times the size of Shenmue I. But a lot of scenes got left out, because right as we neared the end of development I added a whole lot of extra content. Even using the best compression techniques of the time, there was too much for it all to fit. Even so, at the end we increased the content by about an extra 30% of the total game, for the area of Guilin where Shenhua appears.

Matsukaze: I heard a lot about that near the end of the development. People were saying that too much had been made and it wouldn’t all fit in.


The Cutting Room Floor

Q: I’ve heard that there was going to be a “Chapter 2 – The Boat” between Shenmue I and Shenmue II, but Shenmue II starts with Ryo disembarking from the boat, doesn’t it. And the mother of a little girl makes reference to something about that. (laughs)

Suzuki: That’s right. “Chapter 2 – The Boat” from the original scenario was dropped completely.

Matsukaze: Oh yeah, the boat! Actually Chai shows up there. It turns out that Chai survives being cast into Yokosuka harbor, and he shows up on the boat where Ryo fights against this unseen enemy. That was how the scenario was going to run.

Q: Were the scenes filmed?

Matsukaze: Yes, they were. They were filmed in a really over-the-top style. (laughs) Several of the people involved in the story on the boat were to then appear again in a later scenario. They would say something along the lines of “Oh, it’s you from that time on the boat...”, connecting the plot together. That was the plan for the scenario.

Suzuki: The confrontation with Chai would have made a nice situation. We had completed the designs for the boat interior, with everything detailed - from the escape routes and deck heights to the length of the handrails. The plan was that it would develop into a large-scale action scene.

Matsukaze: We completed filming of all the motion capture too. It started with opening the cabin door, and events developed spectacularly from there.

Q: So as you were working on making Shenmue II, you reluctantly had to cut it?

Suzuki: Well, it didn’t trouble me too much. I was like “It’s impossible, it won’t fit – cut it!”. (laughs)

Q: I’m guessing that there were a lot of other scenes cut from the final version, and motion capture that wasn’t included? In particular, I think Ren’s movements are really well done and I was impressed; but I kind of wish we could see more of them.

Hagiwara: Well, if the motion capture was kept for all the detailed actions, it would make a huge amount. We shot a ton of fight scenes as well. Quite a lot has been cut.

On asking Yu Suzuki, “What happened to Niao Sun, who was shown at the premiere?”, he replies “I haven’t been able to use her yet, since she appears later in terms of the scenarios.” Masaya Matsukaze, who plays Ryo, hints at things to come: “When it’s time for Niao Sun to make an appearance in Shenmue, the story will have reached an amazing point!”


Q: Which was more difficult to carry out: dubbing voices to the actions, or the motion capture?

Suzuki: Firstly, these weren’t carried out by different people – the actor’s own acting is the source of the motion capture. Also, when an opponent is hit in the game he cries out; so by actually hitting him, his cry will be the cry of someone who has really been hit. (laughs) It may sound like tough work, but I think it was the perfect set-up.

There was a lot of trial and error at the beginning, but by the time we got to Shenmue II, at last we had found ways to manage things more efficiently.

Q: By the way, Shenmue is your first RPG-style game, isn’t it. Would it be correct to say that one of the main factors that sparked you to develop it is one that is commonly cited, namely the arrival of Final Fantasy VII during the era of the Saturn and PlayStation?

Suzuki: To be honest, part of it was because I found myself in a position of having “no place to go next”. The reason that the Sega Saturn lost popularity wasn't because it was beaten in terms of Sega vs Sony software titles, but because of a completely separate shift in power. And around that time I definitely had a kind of feeling of not having a place to go. As well as that, up until now I had been competing in the 3-minute world of arcade games, and I had been wanting to try my hand at creating something without such a time limit. So you can say that these two points are why I decided to move from arcades to try my hand on the home console.

“At first Shenhua wears plain clothing, but I planned to have her wear various different clothes later on” says Suzuki. “I’m looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds” comments Hazuki Ishigaki, who plays the role of Shenhua.



Looking Back

Q: And so, now that at last Shenmue II has been completed, how do you feel now looking back on it? After the Shenmue Premiere event (December 20, 1998), I guess that the plan was to release it within a year, but it has turned out to have taken right up until now... Is that somewhere near the mark?

Suzuki: It’s true that it didn’t turn out quite as I had initially planned. As more people became involved things grew more and more complicated, not just by a factor of a few times, but exponentially. And with everyone being a developer, if the person next to them developed something impressive, then they would feel compelled to outdo it. This resulted in a kind of chain reaction where everyone would strive to improve their output quality. But it’s hard for me to tell people not to increase quality! It was really challenging to find the right balance.

However there is one thing I think turned out well. In some ways Shenmue shares similarities with fighting-based games, but in the last half of the game in Guilin, where Shenhua appears, there’s no fighting at all. So I feel that I’ve been able to bring out the true Shenmue spirit there.

With Shenmue the graphics are all generated in real time, and ordinarily an attempt to make a game like this would be abandoned in frustration. (laughs) Game developers simply don’t go to the extremes we did. To tell you the truth, I don’t think we could go through it all again.

The Future

Q: So you won’t be making another Shenmue?

Suzuki: The first thing I want to do is take some vacation (laughs), and the staff too. I don’t think we could put ourselves through such tough times again as we did with Chapter One. However, even so, I’ve now learned a lot about how to make this type of game and so I’m confident that we’ll be able to make the next one more efficiently and with less of a burden. We’ll be able to make a similar kind of game, and it’s something I want to do. But... I feel like taking a bit of a break first. (laughs)

Q: Hypothetically speaking, if there was the possibility again in the future, what would be your choice of hardware? Ah, before asking that - is there any potential for a port?

Suzuki: Porting Shenmue I and II across to other hardware wouldn’t be impossible, but due to the sheer size it would materially be a tough job to take on. The easiest and most likely option would be the PC, in a year or two. That’s because the PC has, in a sense, the ability to handle anything and has few constraints.

Q: What thoughts do you actors have about that?

Hagiwara: I’m already raring to go! (laughs) Bring it on!

We really hope to see more acting from Takumi Hagiwara, who plays Ren. “Just say the word and I definitely will!” he says.


Q: I would have liked to have seen Ren take part in more scenes, to be honest!

Hagiwara: I know, right? There are still heaps of interesting stories connected to the scenarios made so far. Things like “Why is Ren present?” and “Why did Shenhua make an appearance?” It all gets explained later on.

Ishigaki: My wish for a port is that it starts properly from the very first disk of the series (laughs).

Matsukaze: Yeah, I agree.

Q: Yu-san, going back to the point you mentioned about the feeling you had of “nowhere to go”, have you satisfied this to some extent for the future?

Suzuki: In a way... not completely though. Conversely, now things have turned into a kind of hardware war, so it has become kind of pointless, right? Life is full of variety, for better or worse. But for me, the creation process is enjoyable, and therefore I want to create a product that people will enjoy. I think that’s been the lesson I’ve learned.

Matsukaze: A lot of female characters appear in Shenmue II, but actually people like Fangmei have some really detailed parameters associated with them such as her level of intimacy. And to reflect these parameters, her spoken lines were all recorded with various tones of voice! I hope everyone can appreciate the amazing attention to detail that fills every corner of the game.

Suzuki: For me, I don’t consider that “Shenmue” came to an end with the demise of the Dreamcast. I have an emotional attachment to the game. And so, I hope to meet up with you all again one day.

Matsukaze: Let’s meet next time for “Shenmue Returns”. (laughs)

Hagiwara: Absolutely. I hope we can.

OVA or Manga/a better option and less controversial? [rant]

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy and pleased that Shenmue 3 is being made, but as equally I'm happy, I am also equally upset at how it went down and how it was revealed.

I remember maybe a few years ago, there were hints of Shenmue 3 being released and being developed, but they were all squashed when it was shown that Yu Suzuki said it himself that the game would cost too much to make, and plans for that were going to be on hold.

So then I thought to myself, why not just make an ova or manga? Mind you, I would prefer a game, but I can settle with an ova of the following chapters.

Introducing a kickstarter, and only making it ps4 exclusive was really crappy and being that I am a xbox supporter, and I was planning on buying a xbox one and not a ps4, as currently I have a 360 (which if you really want me to keep it 100% and real, they could release Shenmue 3 on that lolz) which will never ever go obsolete until maybe even another five years if that. Don't listen to these fake rumors, and I don't have any current gen consoles as for financial reasons I can't afford them.

This game is going to cost way more than 6m to make. Even though they are using a copied engine, that doesn't matter. I still haven't decided if I was going to donate. I don't even have a ps4, or a computer that can play video games. But I still think it wasn't the best option to do that.

Shenmue is a has been game. I love vintage games like the net guy, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Doom etc, but it's time to move on. There have been so many better and interesting games that have came out since Shenmue 2 in 2002, in which Shenmue 3 is going to have to work thrice as hard in order to deliever.

GTA V came and out blew the gaming industry out of the water. It was cross platform, and still has a good booming multiplater. After playing that game, I look at Shenmue like worn out tennis shoes.

So now instead of making an ova or a manga, they decided to make a third game, however rely on more than half of the games funds coming from fans, not make it available on the console it was on the first two games (the dreamcast is the xbox anybody who disagrees can eat a foot), make it only available on ps4 a system that xbox fans hate, originally saying we only needed to raise 2m, then they got greedy and now want us to give 10m+, and we get no type of updates or news, except a badly translated podcast of Yu Suzuki "thanking" us for what we did manage to raise, and the CEO of xbox basically giving us the honest to god truth that Shenmue 3 is not going to sell well, the gaming culture right now won't even know what the fuck the game is, and it's not worth the investment.

I now plan on waiting until a paypal or slacker option is announced because I wasn't able to donate during e3 season due to family emergencies. I will probably donate twenty bucks or something of that sort. Then I guess by 2017 in the latest I would have saved up for a ps4, and I will buy Shenmue 3 from an autistic Gamestop employee. We will all play, and we shall see at that point where the chips fall.

My rant is now over with. At this point in a nutshell, I just want to know your guys opinion as if a OVA was a better choice than what actually happened.

Thank you all for your replies.

I just want to say again as I mentioned this in a previous thread, sometimes I get peer pressured into my opinions usually from those on youtube and other third party sites which talk about video gaming, in which they make up good points.

I'm just saying Shenmue Online and Shenmue City both failed. So I'm not saying Yu Suzuki doesn't invest or plan well, but it wouldn't be the first time a Shenmue revival fell through.

To me if I were him, I would have released maybe a Manga/Anime/OVA series, a visual novel series on the 3ds or something, and maybe if sales and the fandom were still here, then plan on doing a console open world game.

Ouch. I must be hella narcissistic going by that logic.

I didn't say that you were. I don't pay attention to E3, and unless you payed attention to E3, you would have never heard of Shenmue 3 being announced.

I didn't even find out until maybe a month after E3, by then the kickstarter was just about done, and had I found out about it earlier, I could have saved my money up to donate. Now that the kickstarter is over, and I have money I could donate to the project, it doesn't matter anyways as all the incentives are over and I now have to wait for a paypal option which they say is coming, but hasn't yet.

If you donated more, you got in my opinion, more narcissistic options to be implemented in the game, (name in credits, npc modeled after you, capsule toy modeled after you), due to your wealth and how much you contributed. Whether you consider yourself narcissistic or not, that is what it is.

So to me, I'm not going to donate more than twenty bucks as for one that's all I really can donate, I'm young and in college, and disowned by my family so I'm independent, and two, I don't think it's fair that since I managed to give more money, I get all these options that every person who donated should get.

Yes, totally agree with this. Even if they're offered as bonus DLC or something along those lines. I was referring to the rewards offered outwith gameplay.

To be honest, most of the op's 'rant' (as he put it), was somewhat ludicrous anyway so just picked up on a few points.

Just because you disagree, doesn't mean my rant was ludicrous. It's fine to disagree, and I don't mind if you disagree. My main point was that an OVA or an animated movie or series should have been a better option, and I still think it is. But insults and things aren't going to get us anywhere.


I'm a big Shenmue fan, I love the series dearly.

But if I didn't love the series, I'd be foolish, and I'd be lying if I said this game is going to sell well, and it's going to open up a whole new fanbase. It's not.

This is merely for our satisfaction, when if we just needed satisfaction, that could have been done in an animated movie, or in a comic book or in a lower costing, more efficient visual novel game on mobile or on the nintendo handheld.

Again, at this point we are in the waiting game once again, but to me since they are gonna release a console game, they should have at least made it available cross platform, or at least on the xbox one since they want to go current gen, and they shouldn't have asked us for help on a game that already had two previous versions released by mainstream developers. Lastly, they shouldn't have given all of these narcissistic incentives to entice people to donate more.

To be precise, Shenmue I is the whole of Chapter 1, as is. And Shenmue II corresponds with the Hong Kong chapter. The part about meeting Shenhua was originally in Chapters 5 and 6. I moved just the part about meeting her to Shenmue II. Actually Chapter 3 was on a train. The scenes take place inside a train. So Chapter 3 hasn’t been used at all. In total there are 11 chapters, and so I could properly visualize how they would fit together, the first thing I did was to make a novel. So that's the form I put them in, and I use it as a base reference. It's not meant to represent the exact scenarios for the game, though. I don't use it to decide "this event goes here, this quest goes here, this flag gets set here" and so on. It doesn’t directly dictate the scenarios for the game. Rather, it's one of the things I use to drive the scenarios for Shenmue. With Shenmue III, even if I forcibly took the story through to the end of Chapter 11, well... You see, I make decisions to keep or exclude various parts as I go along. Now, at this point I don't know whether Shenmue III will have 30 hours of play time or 60 hours, but if the story is forced to advance along, I could tell that this wouldn’t produce a satisfactory result as a game. So, although unfortunately the story won’t reach the end with Shenmue III, it was a decision I made for the sake of the game's quality.

Yu Suzuki : Shenmue III is based on the 11 chapters created 17 years ago (1998), and each chapter is set in different regions. For example, the first chapter was set in Yokosuka, second was set in Hong Kong and so on. However with Shenmue III it won't do to complete just one chapter's worth in one region, so I have restructured the underlying story to fit the budget.

EVen though I'm not one of the "anti-feminists" in this topic, that story today about how they are thinking of introducing women-only carriages on trains made me splenetic with rage when I heard it.
Then I saw the story being shared about FB with tons of comments (weirdly from loads of males) saying how it's a really good idea and how it should help with the struggles of existing as a female in modern UK society. :roll:
