Re: Shenmue III and Red Dead Redemption 2 launch window

I wouldn't worry too much. There is high potential that one of the games can't meet the release window.
And even if they do arrive at the same time Shenmue III sits comfortably in it's niche and won't be affected very much by it's surroundings.

Don't you think the time of growth for the Dojo has come?

I was wondering myself... Shenmue III is a reality, newcomers are arriving more and more each day. Thinking on that, don't you think the dojo should be more embracing, opening space for non-english speakers? Something like creating "international fórum" with languages divisions.

It should bring more Shenmue fans together and spread more information about the game.

it's just an ideia, ok?

Re: Cédric Biscay interview by Shenmue Master

So S3 will better sell, or else. S1 & 2 remasters or no remasters. Even with the first two games not availlable on PC/PS4, if they do a good summary of the first two games, we should be able to get a million copies/downloads sold, especially since we're on two platforms this time.

I mean, Firewatch did it, Life is Strange did it... Why shouldn't S3 sell more than a million times?

Re: Cédric Biscay interview by Shenmue Master

Not all good games make money or are critically well received but Shenmue III is also a record breaking Kickstarter fundraiser and has over 15 years of hype .
I'm not so sure that'll work in its benefit, but then again; that length of hype is only really contained to fans and I'm almost completely certain at this point that the game will satisfy the majority of us.

The Kickstarter stuff is really only a stick to beat the game with if imperfections are picked upon. Look forward to position switching from a lot of people in the future when they change from "Is $6 million enough to make Shenmue III?" to "OMG SCAMMING YU SUZUKI DOES NOTHING WITH HUGE $6 MILLION FROM FANS".

I think it'll surprise a lot of people in terms of scope and depth for a KS game, though, but YSnet and Shibuya Productions probably won't get the appropriate credit for the hard work and some ignorant people will chalk it up to Sony.

Old OP contents
I am pleased to present to you the trailer for my recently begun project-

Shenmue: The Movie Remastered

https://youtu.be/jGmwkT-bFLQ

I've always been disappointed by the original, and although I understand that they had run time and disc space limitations to work with, I felt that Shenmue: The Movie wasn't an adequate experience. I decided just a few days ago that with the power of modern emulation, I could remake Shenmue: The Movie the way I felt it should have been done, and in 1080p this time.

I'm happy with how the trailer turned out, but keep in mind that not all of the footage you see here is final. Certain parts of the game have given me some trouble, for example the "microstutter" you probably noticed in the Yokosuka harbor scene. I'm hoping to get every second of the 3-5 hour long finished product as perfect as possible.
Edit: Fixed the stutter in the harbor cutscene and uploaded a new version of the trailer (embedded above).

"Can I help?"

Absolutely! However, I will be doing all of the recording and editing myself to keeps things easier and more consistent. What I will need that I'm not sure I can do myself (not very well, at least), is assets like title and ending cards, a custom thumbnail, and probably a new font too. The one by David Brown that I used is nice, but it doesn't support numbers, so I couldn't use it for the intro text or credits. Besides these sorts of things, I'm completely open to any advice, compliments, or criticisms anyone has. This is about creating the best remake possible, not my ego.

As said in the trailer, I'd like to give a big thanks to BlueMue for his advice while I was recording this; David Brown for the Shenmue font he created which I used at the end of the video; Esppiral , Masterchan777 , and Sappharad for creating the awesome Shenmue I&II Auto Fixer; and the entire Demul team for making such a fantastic emulator.

Thanks for watching and reading! I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Re: SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Shenmue: The Movie Remastered

Cool, funny thing is I always found the shenmue movie to be lacklustre with the cuts in story/detail, yet my sister and nephew loved it at the time, so it still must've retained something good (at the time I remember thinking the gameplay/pace was very important part of the experience because I like that aspect of living every waking moment of his life. And it was that that I wished the movie did better.

Which has me thinking. Instead of doing a 3-5hr epic, how about adopting an episodic format? Perhaps that would be really interest for shenmue, and gives you a more succinct experience with plenty of minutiae as well.

Plus you and/or others can work on this in bitesize chunks, and maybe releasing each episode as you develop the next. I think this has great potential to attract new fans as well imo.

That's a good idea, but I'd like to keep it as Shenmue: The Movie . If I did end up splitting it, I'd probably do three episodes (one per disc).

Edit: I found out what was causing that annoying stutter. It wasn't the emulator as I had suspected, but rather my recording settings. There were a couple of options that I thought didn't make a difference, but turning them off seems to have fixed it.

Double edit: Updated the OP with a fixed version of the trailer.

Re: SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Shenmue: The Movie Remastered

Looking good so far! I can potentially do titles and end cards when the time for them comes if you like?

That would great! At this point I don't what I'd want it to look like though. I was thinking of opening with the Shenhua prologue, then having a custom "title screen" per se that's similar to the original (the one I used as the thumbnail for the trailer), but obviously it would say Shenmue: The Movie . If it were animated that would be amazing, but a static background would be enough, and I could chroma key a flashing "press start" prompt over it. Immediately after that would be the iconic opening cutscene at the dojo.

Awesome! Really looking forward to seeing the finished work, man :)

If you're looking for someone to rework the subtitles from the original, I'd be happy to chip in. The grammar and such isn't exactly the best job out there.

Do you mean in-game? I haven't been using them so far, and I don't plan to. International subs for YouTube would be sweet though.

I could easily do an animated version of the title screen, including a "Press Start" prompt. Just let me know when you want me to start on it and if there is anything else you want added to it! There's obviously no rush, so feel free to think of some more ideas. Feel free to PM me and hopefully I'll be able to get it exactly how you want it.

Re: Cédric Biscay interview by Shenmue Master

I hope for S 1 & 2 Remasters as well, but I think even without that we can still get our sales numbers. Since E3 of 2015, Shenmue has been getting massive exposure in all major gaming media, worldwide. Now be that positive or negative coverage, the name is still getting out there and a lot of people are gonna want to try S3 out.

With Yakuza for instance, number 3 has been the most successful entry so far. And that was a PS3 game, which had a much smaller user base at the time of Yakuza 3's release than the PS2 had at Yakuza 1 and 2's release. That's also kind of mid-story. If you haven't played 1 and 2, you won't be able to understand Yakuza 3's story to the fullest but you can still follow it and have fun with the game.

It's basically the same with S3. You'll never understand the full depth of the story and all its characters but you'll still be perfectly able to follow the main story line. You can easily sum up S1 and S2's story to make it accessible to newcomers with the cinema shorts YS Net have planned.

You play as the young Japanese martial artist Ryo who grew up in the suburbs with his father, a martial arts master who runs his own Dojo. In November of 1986, a Chinese triad boss named Lan Di breaks into the dojo and murders your father over the Dragon Mirror while accusing your father of having murdered a man in China in the past. You then start to pursue your fathers killer and find another mirror hidden at your house which the triad is also after. At the same time, Ryo starts dreaming about a country girl from China who also seems to be connected to the two mirrors. A Chinese martial arts master named Chen tells Ryo that the mirrors will resurrect an ancient Chinese monster called Chi You. Ryo fights a local Hell's Angels ripoff gang which is working for Lan Di and learns that Lan Di went to Hong Kong. Ryo follows him to Hong Kong and learns that a Chinese martial artist named Zhu, who used to be friends with Ryo's father is being held captive by a local gang which is also working for Lan Di. He teams up with a rival gang leader, Ren, to rescue Zhu. All the while making friends with loads of other martial artists in Yokosuka and Hong Kong and fighting lots of battles to become an ever stronger fighter. Zhu then tells Ryo and Ren the mirrors form a treasure map and says that Lan Di probably went off to mainland China, to the Guilin region, were the raw material of the mirrors can be found. Ryo gets on the next boat to the Guilin region where he runs into the girl he had seen in his dreams. And bang. There you are, in 1987's China and S3 starts at Shenhua's house.

You see, it took me like 15 lines to sum up the basic story of S1 and S2. Put that into a 5 to 10 minute video clip (nobody's gonna watch anything longer than 10 minutes) and it will be perfectly possible for anyone new to Shenmue to play S3.

Of course I'm still hoping for the Remasters but I think it is still feasible without.

Holy shit my dumb 12 year old self got stuck on that repeatedly. I was playing it on Dreamcast in Japanese and didn't read the subtitles properly, I just kept trying it again and again thinking I simply wasn't quick enough. Eventually my friend who also owned it told me what to do, boy did I feel stupid.

Pre-orders for F4F Lan Di statue begins Nov 3rd!

http://i.imgur.com/UR9OR5I.png

First 4 Figures has revealed their upcoming statue for Lan Di from Shenmue. This statue has Lan Di standing on a dragon mirror with his hand stretched outward. Pre-orders begin November 3rd. #SaveShenmueHD

Links: First 4 Figures | Facebook | Twitter

“Get up… I’ll allow you to die like a warrior…” ~Lan Di

Lan Di pre-orders go live on next Tuesday, 3rd November! We will be doing something different this time round. We will have the exclusive edition size as a TBD for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, we will cut off all pre-orders and immediately put it to wait-list. This will mean far far smaller editions sizes for the exclusives as there is only a 2 week window to order. This is a new strategy to bring the number of exclusives down to better match the real demand, and not just some random edition size. This is how we will be doing all our launches in the future.

What time in the story will Shenmue III start?

Ryo arrives in Hong Kong at the end of February according to non-save transfer files. That gives us three months since the murder of Iwao. Assuming Ryo stayed in Hong Kong and Kowloon for a month each, this puts us at the end of April.

Where am I going with this? Iwao's birthday is the third of May.

In other words, just in time for Shenmue III.

Assuming Ryo gets to Guiin before May, we will experience Ryo's regret and depression as his father birthday passes. I truly feel it may be the most heart breaking moment in the series so far and it's too juicy of a story to pass up. How do you expect Ryo to react, Dojo? I'm really hoping this is the case so we can see Ryo grow.

Re: Cédric Biscay interview by Shenmue Master

Good interview. I think the pragmatism of all involved actually makes success more likely rather than less. And we know Yu is legendarily good at managing budgets and making the best possible use of them. The question for me is not whether a good Shenmue game will come out of development with the budget they have, but rather how it will be received in the gaming media. Like it or not, the gaming media dictates whether a game just does "okay," or breaks through and becomes a huge hit.

Fortunately, a game like Shenmue 3 doesn't need to sell millions upon millions of copies in order to be profitable, because of the structure of their budget and how funds were obtained. And because of Sony's willingness to essentially take the physical distribution hit entirely on PS4. All of that cannot be understated in terms of how important they are for what kinds of numbers the game likely has to do to be profitable.

And with digital distribution, we've seen games sell a few hundred thousand copies and go on to become very profitable, and even launch franchises. I have great optimism Shenmue 3 will do exactly that. Especially since I'm sure the game will be much more accessible to newcomers than Shenmue 1 & 2 (whether we want that ourselves, or not, it's essential for the future of the franchise that S3 not be a niche game with only niche appeal. They can pack it with verisimilitude and dense, rich detail and interactivity like we all demand from Shenmue, while still having more approachable controls for instance.)

I think the game will absolutely be a success. The only question will be, how large a success? I always remain optimistic though, while also being realistic about the challenges. Especially from the gaming media.

Shenmue 2 unused asset: map of Langhuishan village

It's probably well known that the onscreen maps that Ryo can buy in Shenmue 2 are stored as individual graphics files.

But it was quite surprising to find a map of a place where it's not possible to buy a map - the small port of Langhuishan in Guilin.

Map of Workers' Pier (used)

Map of Langhuishan (unused)
http://i.imgur.com/4moCckIm.png http://i.imgur.com/dqmJf3k.png

There are a few small differences in the location of some of the stalls and structures, although overall it's quite close to the actual location Ryo visits.

Re: What are you looking forward to in Shenmue III?

Well, actually that is a very easy question. The answer is: everything.

But I'll try to point out some things I especially look forward to.

1. Finally ( finally !) getting out of that cave.
2. Seeing the story progress.
3. New Shenmue environments.
4. The music.
5. The characters. Seeing some of my favorite video game characters of all time again. Ryo, Shenhua, Ren, Lan Di, Xiuying. And finally getting to know some new characters: Niao Sun, Ming Ming, maybe Tentei.

Man I have to stop writing. Can't wait for S3 to come out.
