Re: Yakuza series

In many ways Shenmue has always strived to be a grounded franchise, even with all the martial arts and hints of magic included along the way. Shenmue is as much about the daily life of Ryo Hazuki as it is about finding his father's killer. This attention to detail, the measured if often sombre tone, is what makes Shenmue unique and truly remarkable.

In contrast Yakuza knows it's an over-the-top franchise and revels in that fact. Beat-up random street thugs with whatever objects are nearby. Take part in bizarre and often hilarious side missions that reveals more about the seedy underbelly of Kamurocho. Honestly, the weirdness of the Yakuza games is all part of the charm; the whole world operates under video game logic, when seemingly mundane events can suddenly veers into an arcades style minigame.

My advice to you, if you want to start playing the Yakuza games, is to actively seek out the weirdness that Yakuza has to offer. This is not a realistic depiction of Japan; this is a hyper-real depiction of Japan! The intensity of everything has been ratcheted up to eleven. For Kazuma Kiryu even the act of serving ramen noodles to hungry customers becomes an epic test of skill and willpower. So, sit back and enjoy the craziness, you're in for one heck of a ride.
That's a good description. Although the Yakuza games do have their serious moments also. And they also have a lot of attention to detail actually. It's just that they sometimes switch from video game-like parts to serious/realistic ones. Something which Shenmue doesn't do as often.
I personally like over-the-top parts like the Revelations. It's not something that you would often see in serious Western games and it provides memorable lighter moments in these huge games.

Speaking of Yakuza and realism got me thinking of this article where they got yakuza to play Yakuza 3 :

edit - Wow, just noticed on the RPGFan article Citans character image they spell his name "Shitan" also a little bit funny though those crazy japanese!

Not really sure why it warrants a  . That's his name. It's only because of localization that he ended up as "Citan."
It even says Shitan in the Xenogears Perfect Works book.

http://oi66.tinypic.com/i2m0jn.jpg

As for the new game, it just looks like a round of fanservice to me... I doubt it has any meaningful story developments or anything. The gameplay looks kind of bland anyway, but it might be cool for a giggle.
I'm guessing it lacks the involvement of Tetsuya Takahashi regardless, so it's not like it's that big a deal in the grand scheme. Even if the game were being called a direct sequel by Square, it'd be like making a Vagrant Story 2 without Yasumi Matsuno. It may as well not even count.

Got a pretty hefty giftcard for my birthday, so I went a bit nuts ordering up works by Hideyuki Kikuchi.
I already own and have read read the first two Vampire Hunter D novels and Demon City Shinjuku, and I've started to read the third D novel and Demon Palace Babylon. It's not necessarily that Kikuchi is the greatest writer in the world or anything, but the guy has an insane amount of imagination and cool ideas, and apparently he writes very quickly. Since the early-80s the guy has apparently written hundreds of novels (seriously, hundreds ) and can bang out an entire book in a month's time.
I love his sense of imagination, but even beyond that it's just that his apparent work ethic is a huge inspiration to me. And because of that, I'd like to read as much of his work as I possibly can.

Re: Random Thoughts

Don't get me wrong, there are technological advancements from the military that have benefited the public as well. But why support an increase on a budget that is already trumping (har har) everything else? We have the most bloated defense spending in the world, why throw MORE money at it? It makes no sense to advocate such a thing when you can allocate (which is the keyword here) some of that into things like more affordable college education. Sometimes people have no choice but to enroll in places like ROTC because of the promises to pay full tuition.

Trump just sounds attractive cause it sounds like he isn't part of the status quo. But I'm sorry, an abrasive and xenophobic candidate is only going to cause more damage to this country. Especially with an extensive history of failure and generally being wrong about issues (remember the birther thing? He brought it back and he got shut down by Obama himself). Not to mention his lack of a solid plan on ANYTHING.

He's in it for the title. He can care less about this country and its citizens. That's why his whole campaign is a circus and people are eating it up cause they are scared, they had enough, and they're looking for someone to blame.

Sounds a little familiar to something . I can't put my finger on it.

We don't need clown candidates or career politicians. We need a complete overhaul of the government. I wouldn't be surprised at all that a new revolution is brewing right now. A real one. One with serious repercussions because of all the bullshit we had to endure for this long.

Re: Resident Evil VII

I don't get the hate or dislike over it. Ya I know it's different, it's more Silent Hills than Resident Evil, but it doesn't make it a bad game. Played the demo, loved it. I like these kind of games. Jump scares, intricate area's with items littered about, psycho's etc. I really don't mind that its a "detour" for the series, even though clearly Umbrella is still involved if you found the clue in the demo. Just make a good game imo. but that's just me. After the craziness of 5 and 6 story wise I think the series really needs this to get grounded again.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

Man, Ubisoft is the absolute worst offender when it comes to downgrades. Watchdogs, Rainbow Six Siege and The Division. I still remember when people dug into Watchdogs on PC and found out you could actually enable the lighting, reflections and textures shown in the E3 demo. Proving they downgraded it for no good reason. I doubt its true, but there was a rumor I saw on NeoGAF and Reddit back then that a supposedly proven insider was saying they got paid to do so in order to keep the PC version from outshining the newly released consoles.

At the end of the day as long as the game play is good it shouldn't matter, but I see why people get upset. Division is the only one that bothered me though. That actual game is so bland and dead compared the what they originally showed off. When the game was shown, they stated it was the PC version and it looked incredible. Game released and is completely stripped and watered down. New Zelda game looks great either way, but definitely a clear difference between what the two. People always give Nintendo a free pass. But I can 100% say that with Monolith helping develop, the game play will make up for any graphical differences.

Added a bit more to my Vampire Hunter D collection.
Almost have all the books (they're up to... I believe 24 at the moment? And this brings me up to 15), even though I actually still have yet to finish the third book.
Just started that up again though, so I'm hoping to start flying through them. Really enjoyable stuff.
The one with the yellowish cover is actually the Reader's Guide; basically a Vampire Hunter D encyclopedia kind of thing, with a short story or two added in for good measure.
Greylancer, meanwhile, takes place in the same universe as D, but with a different protagonist. The most exciting thing about it though is the fact that, despite the rather poor, uninteresting cover art which is by someone else, Greylancer actually features interior illustrations by Ayami Kojima (most notable for her artwork on the Castlevania series). Really great artist. Actually, it's pretty impressive the amount of great artists Hideyuki Kikuchi has gotten to illustrate his books over the years, from Yoshitaka Amano for the D series, Jun Suemi for his Demon City books, and now Ayami Kojima for Greylancer. Really classy, high-quality stuff. Definitely a far cry from the shitty modern-anime illustrations you usually get with serialized Japanese novels like these.

EDIT: Added A Wind Named Amnesia/Invader Summer to all that. Supposedly Kikuchi's first novels, so that'll be an interesting read.

EDIT 2: Just got the Greylancer novel in the mail and... what the frig?! The publisher omitted the illustrations for the localized version!
Heresy. Not only did they change the cover art from the excellent original version, but they leave out all those tasty bits of art as well. Still looking forward to the actual story, but man... way to screw up a localization.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)

I got to chapter 5-2 out of 5-5 several years ago, but hadn't managed my inventory very well and gave up due to a lack of ammo and items. I recently picked it back up with a new save specifically because I remembered that you can use an old Mauser handgun (Red 9 in-game). I liked RE4 before, but damn do I love it now. If nothing else, this game does body dismemberment better than anything I've ever played. The visuals, the sound effects- nothing comes close besides maybe Killing Floor. It's certainly convenient that the best weapons in the game are also the most effective at bursting heads open. The story is nothing to get excited about, but the characters are very well fleshed out, and in my opinion, only hindered by their classically corny Capcom dialogue. The game is more so on the challenging side, but highly rewarding and filled with a plethora of gameplay elements.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

I hope to get back into resident evil again soon. I have the ps4 0/ 1 remasters on my watch list and have had re2 on n64 since i bought another n64 again last summer (great buy btw), although ill probably wait out re2 remake but i am curious about the old versions too, especially collecting. Re3 and code veronica on dreamcast?

If you have a way to play gamecube games, then get the gamecube versions of 2, 3, and code: veronica. Those are the best console versions.

As for the other games, you can get the main ones on PS4 nowadays, which I assume would be the best versions to get. If you want to play the original version of RE1 (which i prefer -- it is not obsoleted by the remake), then either get the black label version of director's cut (not the green label or the one on PSN) or the DS version. The music is fucked up beyond belief in the green label director's cut version or the PSN version. Also, the original release of RE1 on PSX (not director's cut) is not a good choice because it has artificial difficulty added to the game (in the west) in order to make it harder to complete. Makes it a bit unplayable IMO.

Anyway, love the series so hope you do get into it.

Is your loop custom or an AIO cooler? I'm honestly not sure what affect sitting for so long would have on it. I think its diff if its new in box, but after being used/heated up there's no telling. Scary! It could work perfectly fine for all I know though.

It'll be fine. The fluid that's used in those may not even be water, and if it is, it has anti-freeze and other chemicals in it which will prevent microbe growth. Regardless of how much time has passed, the liquid shouldn't be sludged up or anything.

Re: Final Fantasy Series News and Updates Thread

All they had to do was do it REmake style. Follow the original game plan and make it better with newer features (job system, new materia features, new story sections, rearrange some of the game to make the game feels fresh for old players, add new content that wasn't in the original, FFX-2 esque ATB battle system). This would have taken two to three years to make.

Instead they have to remake a 1997 game for "modern audiences" with an entirely new battle system, a third person perspective and no pre rendered bgs. Which is clearly more work.

Remaking a game shouldn't have all this vision and stuff put into it. Just take the original and make it better. REMake is the template for game remakes because it's the highest standard for a remade game.

Instead, they pull a Versus XV on it.

Nomura honestly shouldn't be allowed to direct another FF after this.

Re: Recent Gaming Purchases

Took advantage of that Phoenix Wright sale on the eShop.
I already bought Dual Destinies a couple weeks ago, and I was planning on Spirit of Justice eventually. Was going to skip the Trilogy collection since I already have them on DS.
But since they're all marked down right now, I went ahead and got both Spirit of Justice and the Trilogy. Great deal right now, practically half off.
Also got Romancing Saga 2 for iPhone. Not big on mobile gaming, but that one seemed worth the support. I've never played far into the Saga series in general, but I do like what I have experienced/seen, and I think Square needs to be shown a bit further that it's okay to do something other than Final Fantasy every now and then. Plus, it's a Super Famicom game that never made it over here back in the day. I'm always behind that kind of thing 100% (half the reason I bought an original DS so many years ago was for Front Mission and Shiren the Wanderer).
