New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentation

Small clip of new footage...! We get to see the little girl introduced in MAGIC 2018 in motion, and a small clip of Ryo in a village. And I mean small. It is from today's THQ Nordic financial presentation: https://tv.streamfabriken.com/thq-nordic-cmd-2018?seek=4323

Skip to the slides where they briefly talk about Shenmue. Around slide 20.

EDIT: looks like (what I hope to be) old, outdated Ryo and Shenhua models in a slightly different Gamescom teaser. Interesting stuff.

KS Update #82: Shenhua finds her voice! JP VO begins.

Hello Everyone!

It is now official! Voice actress Haruka Terui will be the voice of Shenhua Ling, the heroine of this story facing the adventures ahead with Ryo.

It has been quite a wait since the confirmation announcement of Masaya Matsukaze as Ryo in the July of 2015, but trust us, it was worth it!

The Main Cast
A word of introduction from our main cast members…

Comments from Masaya Matsukaze:

Sequel Excitement
When I heard that the project broke two Guinness World Records, I must say it did not really hit me at the time, but now, I couldn’t be more excited! We are making good headway on the uncommon amount of speaking lines, and as we do so, the faces of my friends who were also in the production of 1 and 2 are there with me in my thoughts.

For the long-time Shenmue fans, I hope they will also share this strikingly peculiar sense of going back in time; and for those new to the series, I hope they will enjoy this wonderful entry that will take them to a whole other world. And with the unimagined miracle announcement for the 1 and 2 remakes, I emphatically wish that everyone will experience all three!

Thoughts on the Series
Even with over 300 people so feverishly working on Shenmue, when production had stopped, I thought there would never be another sequel. Yu-san has watched as the landscape he presented to the world 14 years ago has now become the standard in the gaming industry, and I once again must give my admiration to him for building a concept on such a grand scale.

I also think how fortunate I was to be there back in my twenties. The hardware has since evolved, and now witnessing the improved quality of Shenmue, I get goose bumps all over again thinking if this is what Yu-san had seen all along. This sequel has the might of the fans behind it, and these past few years Yu-san said he has been meeting fans all over the world and would make it for them. Everything is in place, so let the journey continue.

Comments from Haruka Terui:

Sequel Excitement
I was both honored and terrified when I heard I had been chosen to play Shenhua. Shenmue has been beloved by so many for so long and fans have been waiting her. As I look Shenhua in the eyes and become her voice, I will remember everyone has their own precious memories and I will do everything I can to keep those memories like they were. The more I learn about her, the more I feel drawn to and taken over by her curious charm. I am incredibly happy to be able to walk alongside her.

Thoughts on the Series
I watched “Shenmue: The Movie” which I borrowed from Matsukaze-san who plays Ryo. I was greatly impressed you could make a movie just from the scenes in a game. It was actually a shock for me to see how much thought had been put into the dialog and action. Now, watching the Shenmue III movie while we record, the picture is all the more beautiful. The world, the forests, the people…they all live there. I can’t wait to play it. I will be acting my heart out for Shenhua and for you!

Hope you enjoyed the report!
Besides our leading couple of Masaya and Haruka, recording for the other Japanese cast members is ongoing daily! When the English voicing is all set, we will be sure to have an update.

So, until next time, we thank you for your support!

Re: KS Update #82: Shenhua finds her voice! JP VO begins.

There is something very familiar looking on that screen in the background in the photo of Haruka at the mic.
Anyone else spotted and recognized that bit from the cave?

Anyway, an unexpected update indeed. It's a bit sad another major character can't be voiced by the original actor or actress. I'm sure Haruka will deliver a compelling performance but one wonders if Masaya will be the only one returning for the original cast.

Re: New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentat

I agree with ShenmueTree that communicating the feeling / intention behind words can result in a more natural translation rather than a direct translation of the words. Having said that, for me, "It's you, Ryo" sounds a reasonable line for a small kid, but there are many other possibilities that may fit better - also not knowing the context of the clip makes it hard to judge.

To go on a bit of a tangent, I actually have a bit of a small annoyance with a lot of VN and anime English subs/fansubs where the character is talking about themselves and the translator goes for a literal translation where they translate what works best as first person to the texts' third person. For example someone translating

「ジャスミン:ジャスミンは悲しい」
to
“Jasmine: Jasmine is sad.”
:) Hm, yes a speech pattern that sounds fine in Japanese definitely sounds weird put directly into English!

Re: Anyone disappointed with Shenmue 3 cartoon-like graphics

The only real critiques I have are that I prefer the hair and Ryo's face from this screenshot.

https://b1.gmbox.ru/c/146360.815xp.jpg

Even though I am more than content with Ryo's face in the short Deep Silver clip, I personally enjoy the other more. It's definitely not a big deal though. Shenhua is imo, perfect (in the Deep Silver clip briefing clip). No changes desired.

Re: General Anime Discussion

So I caught the first episode of the new FLCL on tv... but I couldn't sit through more than about two minutes of it.
Not because it was bad, mind you. I just can't take watching this show in English. And being that the whole thing is premiering on Toonami, of course it was going to be in English. Thought I might be able to stomach it... but no, not so much. The animation was beautiful, and the Pillows music gave me a total boner, but the voices... nah.

Fucking bummer, because FLCL is a really special anime for me. One of the only anime I actually bothered to download fansubs of, waaaaaay back before it had appeared in the US yet (only other one I bothered doing that was with the Cowboy Bebop movie). Far enough back that I still get irritated when I see the title spelled out as "Fooly Cooly"; it's Furi Kuri goddammit. First watched it at a time when everything was going kind of shitty for me, but this show was just such a jolt of fun, positive energy, so to this day it remains pretty much the be-all, end-all "feel good" anime for me personally. Or close to it, at least.
So when I watch the new one, I want to watch it right , in Japanese with subs, as I did with the original. A bunch of annoying English VA trying to mimic the cadence and energy of the Japanese VA just makes my ears bleed.
So I guess I'll be waiting for the bluray or something. Feels like such a long damn wait. Seventeen years for me, man. Maybe eighteen by the time the bluray comes out.
That's a Shenmue-level wait.

Guess I'll just go watch the original for now and drown myself in nostalgic greatness.

Re: What level did you pledge at?

Just bought the digital download because that's all I want. Not into physical gift special editions anymore. Apart from the Yakuza 6 whiskey glasses and stones I bought separately from ebay.

Re: No Japanese release?

How on earth do these rumors get started/conclusions get leaped to?

The game has had a dedicated Japanese web page on Sega's official site from day one.

http://shenmue1-2.sega.jp/

It's taken longer for the local release date to be announced, but China and Korea were just recently confirmed for August 22nd.

As mentioned, it's a PS4 exclusive in Japan.
