Re: What???! Mind = blown

Awesome to always discover new things playing this game. On my current play thru of Shenmue 1, Ine-san and Ryo had a conversation I never remember them having. Ine mentioned something about one of Ryo's karate instructors being worried and wanting Ryo to drop by.

Re: BIG BANG! 6 million reached and it keeps going!!!

I'm so thankful for the Shenmue fans who kept this alive for 14 years, who campaigned and kept it at the forefront of people's minds. While I lamented and felt deflated every E3 and never gave up hope, I never campaigned like others did and for that you people have my thanks... you have all made something I thought was impossible.. possible..

Re: What was the one thing you found unique about Shenmue?

How everyday is different (in-game) due to a unique set of dialog, every character feels real and their emotions really do show with it's regular changes as you interact with them (conversations, looking after the cat). It is essentially real life.

Re: Ouch, the comments on the youtube trailer are harsh...

I wouldn't worry too much.
Those commenters are evaluating a game's worth in a rushed trailer that does not represent the visual quality the game will have in the future. And of course some of those comments are from trolls or fanboys that are mad that the game is not going to be released in their system of choice.
Have faith in Yu and his team.

Re: Ouch, the comments on the youtube trailer are harsh...

To be completely honest, I don't disagree with a lot of the youtube comments. When a friend told me that there was a Shenmue III kickstarter I immediately searched for it, found it, and donated. I didn't research a single thing except confirming that Yu Suzuki was at the helm.

Afterwards I watched the video, and cringed so hard. Between the poor animation, lack of actual information, and other general shittyness, my immediate reaction was "damn, if I had never hear of Shenmue before and THIS was what I had to go off of, I wouldn't be donating." This new video really didn't change that initial reaction.

To be completely frank, I don't think anyone would have pledged to that KS if all they had to go off of was the actual KS. Most pledges had to be from fans and the rest were likely from friends and families of fans who were moved by the fans' excitement over it. I just can't imagine anyone pledging based on the merits of the actual KS.

GAME Watch interview snippets

Here are a few quick Q&A snippets I translated from an interview with Yu Suzuki published online by GAME Watch ( June 19 article ). The interview timing was just after the first $2 million Kickstarter milestone was passed.

I skipped most of the Q&A since they were pretty much what has been covered before, and picked out the following few :

First Kickstarter goal reached! Interview with Yu Suzuki on Shenmue 3

--- Will you be adding members to the development team going forward?
YS: The core team members will be from Neilo, but I have in mind certain other people who I would also like to ask to join - “if this much funding is raised, I'll invite that person...”, there a few people like that.

-- As part of the Kickstarter rewards, there is the $10,000 “Dinner with Yu Suzuki” reward, and the 3 available places were filled in an instant, weren't they. What do you plan to talk about with the participants at the dinner?
YS: The reason I particularly limited the number to just 3 people is because I wanted to spend plenty of time speaking with each of them one at a time, and really get to know their thoughts. It's not so much a question of what topics we will speak about, but more that I want to be able to take in what they have to say.

-- Is there anything else you can tell us?
YS: Since we made the announcement at the PlayStation conference, I am frequently asked whether SCE will be providing funding support. I haven't been able to speak on this until now, but: they will be providing some funding support with respect to development costs. To go further on this topic, we also have other funding planned in addition, but even with that added on, the funding would not have been enough. The funding shortfall is the reason that we started Kickstarter.

What was the one thing you found unique about Shenmue?

You can tell me you liked the story or the mini games or even the Hilariously good VA.

I liked all the above but there is one thing i found very intresting about the shenmue duolgy(soon to be trilogy!!).
What i found the most unique was the culture.By that i mean how Yu suzuki choose the make the game based around Japan and China.Since japan and china arent BFFs i diddnt expect to ever see a game that allows you to embrace both cultures without making one of them inferior.

I really loved how Yu suzuki decided to have

S1 in Japan
S2 in China
S3 in China

I really learnt alot about both cultures from the game. This game when it is played by chineese people(china is allowing playstations to be sold now) could help strenghten the relationshio between both repective countries. But thats going on a new topic.

Overall i am hoping We get Shenmue 4 and 5 after Shenmue 3.
I would love to see Shenmue 4 in Japan again since it could bring back Nozomi.Do any of you think we might see future Shenmue games that introduce us to even more cultures?

The Villages: everything we know so far

I'm most excited by the new locations we'll get to explore, so I've collected images and descriptions of what we already know...

Baisha
http://i.imgur.com/10ILtKL.jpg

Concept art and photos: http://imgur.com/a/Urtpj

Yu Suzuki said: Baisha will show off what Shenmue is all about. Live out a siege game reminiscent of the Warring kingdoms. See what strategist will come out on top.

May possibly feature an 'infiltration mission' into the Chi You Men's Guilin branch. The buildings shown in the concept art are called Tulous. They are between three and five stories high, can house up to 80 families and are easily defensible.

Choubu
http://i.imgur.com/LyT4LHu.jpg

Concept art and photos: http://imgur.com/a/eU3uV

Yu Suzuki said: Choubu is a riverside village with lots of shops, souvenir stores, hotels and temples. The quests in this village should be very enjoyable, I think.

And: Amidst the mystical scenery of the Li River, Choubu lies in a water colour painting come to life. The port of call will be filled with souvenir shops and hotels, shrines and village dwellings. Expect to meet a sage master of Nanquan there .

This area may feature the 'Magic Maze' technique of generating building interiors. It could also feature a part time job of some sort.

Bailu
http://i.imgur.com/BZXPVTi.jpg

Concept art and photos: http://imgur.com/a/YBRqA

Yu Suzuki said: Bailu is the village where Shenhua was raised and also a place that Ryo's father, Iwao, had visited when he was younger. Here as well the quests will play an important role as Ryo and Shenhua start their journey.

And: Shenmue 2 ends at Shenhua's house in the outskirts of Bailu village. Bailu village is waiting to be explored for real.

Have I missed any information?

Re: What was the one thing you found unique about Shenmue?

It's hard to pinpoint only one thing that really struck me when I first played the game, unless you consider the whole game itselft as the one thing. But I think I can say that it was incredible degree of realism the game has. The weather system and the passing of time with greatly affected NPCs with their daily routines was and still is mind blowing.

Shenmue: The Gang Edition Trilogy Blu-Ray

http://www.gangentertainment.org/images/boxset3_shenmue.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erQ13_VOFAA

For the 1 or 2 people who might give a crap: I've finished putting together a special blu-ray release of Shenmue: The Gang Edition Trilogy. If you've avoided owning these movies over the last decade, now's your chance to grab the entire collection on a single blu-ray disc! This release includes all 3 movies, along with all of the bonus features that were originally included on the DVDs (bloopers, behind-the-scenes documentaries, audio commentary for each movie, and more).

Important Detail: Each movie is presented in it's original, 4:3 standard definition resolution. I played around with upscaling the movies to HD resolution, but considering the source footage was originally shot on everything from VHS to Hi8 to MiniDV, it just didn't make much of a difference. I do think the video quality is better than the DVD version since the larger disc capacity allows for higher bitrates and less compression. Long story short: these look SLIGHTLY BETTER than the DVDs we've been selling for the last 10 years, lol.

If you're interested in purchasing this collection, use the link below to go to our online store. It's $30, which includes shipping to anywhere in the US ($15 extra for overseas shipping). Of course, the DVD versions are still available for a 1/3 of the price...and let's not forget that all the movies are available to watch for free on our website. But for you die-hard fans, this is the definitive Shenmue: The Gang Edition collection!

Smooth McGroove

Maybe we could convince him to do a Shenmue acapella? We of all people know that Shenmue 1 and 2 have a fantastic soundtrack, but he and or many of his 1.2 million subscribers may not. He takes requests, but there's no telling what kind of backlog he has or what it would take to get something onto his list.

I'm not familiar with espiral other than by name, but if any fan of the series deserves to be hired, it's NoconKid. That dude has done some fucking incredible things with his HD remake of Shenmue - and all out of love, no less! Plus, he's clearly familiar and skilled with Unreal Engine, so it makes sense.

Espiral is famous here to make excellent Shenmue renders after extracting 3d models straight from the games. His best achievement is having given a fictional Shenmue III cover to http://www.favslist.com/MostAnticipatedGames

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

To Shen GTH: Yea exactly, this handholding BS needs to be done away with these day, and people wonderwhy kids are utterly braindead nowadays. It's because everything is done for them.

Seriously, I'll be extremely pissed off, if there a pointer in Shenmue 3 telling you what to do next, icons on top of NPCs pointing out they're important, ect.

Seriously It's so bad these days, games feel the need to tell you, you need to hit ______, button, to talk to a NPC or whatever, It's retarded. It's so bad, that there are games, that are pretty much nothing but tutorials sigh.

God forbid someone actually has to figure anything out them selves. Nintendo did a test, they had a ton of people play the 1st stage of SMB1, and their results state that 90% op gamers today, can't even finish the 1st stage of SMB1 http://www.p4rgaming.com/majority-of-gamers-today-cant-finish-level-1-in-super-mario-bros/

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Fair and interesting review of Shenmue, mainly because the reviewer never played the game before this year.
It gives a good hint about how newcomers could/should react when discovering the saga.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzpHb3U1HLw

I find interesting that most of the gripes I read about Shenmue (like not beeing able to skip time forward or slow paced rythm) are the result of Yu Suzuki's choices and not conceptional flaws.

Similarly, most of the positive aspects of the game are the result of audacious decisions and could still be considered as a reference in modern gaming.

Yeah. That's one of the reasons why the series is so special. It's one of few AAA titles that goes beyond mere entertainment. Some of the things I like most about Shenmue are aspects that are more about immersion and being interesting rather than 'fun'.

It's sad that most games these days are so hand-holding and that the attention span or tolerance for slow pacing of people in general seem to be so low. Not to get into the whole 'games as art' debate but game critics, who are ones who should be recognizing new and innovative ways to use the medium, often seem to not have a very expansive view of what a game could actually be as a form of expression.

As an example of impatience, I see people calling for including a map-mode similair to GTA in potential HD-remakes of the games. Was it really that bothersome to go look at the town maps? (there were quite alot of them) And wasn't it part of the charm of exploring the environment? Being lost in Hongkong and feeling somewhat insecure in a new environment was surely something Yu Suzuki wanted the player to experience. A GTA-style map with everything pointed out would have changed that experience completely.

The pacing is absolutely brilliant, and unique to the series I think. It allowed the mundane aspects of life and the world to be communicated, and also made the game more epic.

About time-skipping, I can see why some people would be frustrated with not having that option. But I still respect Suzuki for not including it in the first game. It made it more immersive, more real.

Re: How did you react to the announcement?

that was actually both shocking and funny...
me and a friend of mine decided to wake up at 4 am to be able to watch the Sony conference live (I live in Italy), and by the time it began we started texting via what's app. He had never played Shenmue before that day but had a lot of respect and curiosity for the franchise.
The Last Guardian, FFVII remake and the game from media molecule made him very happy, and five minutes before Shen3 was announced he was saying: "this conference is the best in years, now they only have to announce Shenmue 3 to obliterate everything else".
I was pessimistic and he replied that maybe we were asking too much...Right after this sentence Shenmue theme started playing, and I jumped from my chair before the text appeared, I immediately sent him an audio message that was something like this: <<NOOOOO, I can't believe it... [laugh mixed with tears], I just can't...can't....“.
After that I started crying with so much joy, it was something I have never felt before (I have no fear to say that, I'm 23 yo)... When Suzuki was invited on stage I sincerely had a little faint, I was touched by his tears, his humility and the passion he was expressing with the look of his eyes.

The result was a huge amount of adrenaline in my body that later wouldn't have made me sleep at all, and in the next couple of days I couldn't stop crying everytime I watched the reveal trailer and mostly the live reaction videos, and still today I have quite goosebumps.
This whole thing touched me really deep for a lot of reasons actually: I went through a very tough time in my life , I was slowly recovering and every day I was happier, and the period of May and June has been a life changing one for me (in a good way). But there was also another thing:
I have my Dreamcast and both Shenmue 1 and 2, but the last time I played the first one was in 2002 because then my brother lent the first 2 discs of Shenmue to someone and they never got back (he doesn't even remember the person who took them), and in 2009 I managed to buy the first 2 discs on Ebay at a very cheap price, but I still couldn't replay the game because my Dreamcast was fried and I kept playing Shen2 on my xbox360 once in a while. On May 2015 I felt this strange urge to find a new Dreamcast because I wanted to re-play the first Shenmue so badly...I found a used and cheap console from a private seller and I did a relaxed playthrough of the first 2 games in a row until the very end of June.
This is why Shen3 was such a shock for me... after all these years I felt the need to make a gift for myself and repeat this experience that had changed my life the same way I did when I was a kid, and right after that the new game was announced....I can't believe this is just a coincidence, after 14 years...
