Re: Random Thoughts! v2.0

That brick wall was supposed to enlighten you, but don't worry since it fails at doing it. Kiba uses the deceitful Aristotle's logic all the time so it's not worth shitting your panites over. In this case, he also completely ignores the fact that he is against something that he himself does all the time to others (as a part of those 'communities' he advocates so strongly for that his nipples go all wild).

You do know you talk some absolute balls sometimes dont you?
Talking absolute balls? Oh, no, no. That honour belongs to Kibby when he's in a good swing.

Re: Yakuza series

You guys were lying to me! You kept saying that Y4 is "very good". What a load of crap!

Y4 is fucking amazing! To say that it's better than Y1-3 is not enough. Y4 wipes the floor with Y1-3. The progress done is stunning. It's not only about the polish made both to the graphics and to the gameplay. Y4 has much more style, much more personality, much more human drama and it features an enormous improvement to the writing that was very good to begin with. To think they did it all in a year and with that rather crappy engine... It's really something.

I'm really curious about the FPS performance of Y5. Y4 can get pretty nasty slowdowns in bigger fights, mainly due to the improved light effects. I really hope the new engine will get around that, but I actually doubt it. It's not a big issue. The battles in Yakuza aren't frame-heavy by any means so the slowdowns aren't game-breaking. It just looks nasty.

BTW, Masa-kun is so great in my eyes that I really wish the whole game was about him. It wouldn't really be Yakuza anymore, lol, but I really want more of him.

Re: Wii U

Sick in an awesome way considering the best things about Wiiu are all ram and storage related which is actually the biggest thing you need for action games.
Yeah, I saw Wii U's specs just before seeing the Bayo 2 teaser. Thought the same thing when I noticed that it has so much RAM (for a console). It would also do good to an open world game like SHAMOOOO 3. Suzuki, bent your ass before Iwata if you have to!!!

Re: Yakuza series

I have a love-hate relationship with Y4's story. I love every minute of it, but at the same time I just can't turn a blind eye to the fact that it ditches all logic starting from the end part of Tanimura's chapter. It gets so ridiculous in Kazuma's chapter and later that you can clearly see that somebody simply said "Fuck it. Let's blow some shit, do some betrayals and call it a day." The story was supposed to be the most complex of them all, but it only managed to get itself into a dead corner. It's also riddled with the cheapest plot tools ever. Everybody washing up at Kazuma's doorstep? Fate can be funny, but never that funny. Akiyama earning 100 billion yen from square zero in 4-5 years? He's smart, but nobody's that smart, and being smart is never enough to earn that kind of cash. People constantly being killed in front of Tanimura, but Tanimura himself is never harmed? Are the bad guys gay for his hot ass and don't want to hurt him? Oh please...

It's just the tip on an iceberg of shitty plot tools, but even though things stop making sense at a certain point and the whole chain of betrayals is very predictable, despite all of that, you still get hooked in. That's because the acting and dialogues are top-notch. It's just that somebody made a conscious decision to just let it all happen. They clearly had the whole Kamurocho setting overdone and wanted to end it with a bang. Dead Souls looks like a very logical step now - a sort of danse macabre on the ashes. Y5 is clearly a whole new game with Kamurocho being only a part of it, as Nagoshi was saying from the start.

I'm kinda scared that the story of Kazuma goes for too long now, though. You just need to know when to quit. I would have been much happier if Y5 was a true reboot, without Kazzy (as much as I love him) and his jazz. Then again, I'm sure I'll just eat all of the nonsense all over again and enjoy the show... unless there are going to be nanomachines involved.

Re: Wii U

People who seriously consider buying iPhone 5 over Wii U aren't people for whom the majority of Wii U's launch games are made. Those are just fad seekers, fucking "trenders" who treat gaming consoles like gadgets to play with on a few slow weekends. Every gamer with enough cash wants Wii U and if he doesn't buy it on launch, then it's only because he wants to wait for a newer, more reliable model.

Nintendo is doing one of the best console launches in YEARS. You can piss on their parade and it still won't make it any less awesome.

People who buy iPhone 5 on launch despite having perfectly working phones and living in an age that allows for a plethora of amazing experiences are fucking trenders who just want to feel revalorized as human beings. Re: Yakuza series

That's because the Yakuza team (which is pretty much the Shenmue team, or rather what's left of it) makes games for... FUN. Not that they don't want to cash on them. Of course they want to! But they want to earn the cash fairly. You know, doing their best given the time and the budget and actually appreciating the gaming culture with in-game treats. Not like... say... creating interactive movies that mask their true identity with pseudo-artistic nonsense about human emotions and lies about reinventing the wheel. Ironically, the Yakuza games feature far more human drama than something like Heavy Rain. Maybe that's because SEGA actually takes the effort to hire genuine writers instead of relying on self-appointed scribblers? Just sayin'.

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

Poor Soul Reaver:

Let me tell you, this game ate up a lot of weekends and late nights. Even with that extra time in, we didn't have enough days to finish the game the way it was imagined. There was just too much stuff. Designers had planned the forges and powers that went along with them. One day, we had a come to Jesus moment where we just had to look at the (extremely large) overhead map and just start Xing out areas, powers, and abilities. It was painful and difficult. Each forge was tied to an ability, and each ability was supposed to unlock a new area, AND new mechanics. So it was all interwoven. Each cut was not minor.. it literally tore apart pages of well thought out design. (It was like killing your baby.. but Game Devs are the only ones who cry over it.. and people who find out about it later LOL). It was cut about 2/3 into the game. I think all the remaining glyphs were cut at the same time.. sometimes having too many ways to kill a Vampire can be bad too.. we realized there was a lot of redundancy as well. It takes resources from every department (Character, Environment, Engineering, Audio, FX, UI, Design, and Production) to get a single feature realized, so we made cuts that helped as many departments as possible, and sharpened the overall experience.

[...]

Any flat area like that was probably a secret area or pathway that got cut.

[...]

The Priestess, several vampire Hunter types, Demon designs, and vampire variants were all thrown out due to time or just plain not liking the design. I even tried to make a modular demon design so we could swap in parts and make different mix-and-match demons. That idea didn't last long. I tried some Sluagh variants and Vampire Wraith designs too.. and some Spectral creatures that nested in and around the Elder God. I have them all on a hard drive or CD.. somewhere.

The Undercity (which I loved.. LOVED) would have used a lot of pulley/chain puzzles to create walkways, portcullises, and drop stairwells.

[...]

You would need shift at will, passthrough, glide, wallcrawling, and water immunity for undercity I believe.

[...]

Well the Undercity just didn't work technically. We split the streaming into two haves but didn't have time to reconcile the visibility limitations for playable space. We didn't have enough memory to do vistas either. It literally got the point where if you looked left you could see half the city and the other half disappeared, and if you looked right the opposite would occur. It is, of course, possible today, but you'd have to know how to add a level to the system. It was influenced by noted architect Lebbeus Woods. I also like the lighting and look of http://riversforgotten.com/ so it would fall along those lines.. some areas claustrophobic, and others vast and beautiful (and too much for a Playstation 1)

(Source: Daniel Cabuco, former Crystal Dynamics lead, August 2012.)
Then again, I didn't really like the original story. I prefer how it ends with Defiance.
In SR1, Raziel was supposed to kill Kain and wipe out all of vampires, thus healing the world, and it was Kain's plan all along. Yeah, the whole 'aliens' concept introduced in the next games and Raziel's sacrifice for Kain are rather lame, but I really prefer for Kain to be alive. I just like him too much. SR2 and Defiance aren't as genius gameplay-wise as SR1, though.
BTW, this pre-release brochure is a fun read. In the 90s, even the PR was better.

Oh, I know that. I didn't misunderstand that part.
I was just saying how retarded it was that I was expecting to just hear the quick little sound clip when I clicked on it, but was instead met with an "embedding disabled, watch on youtube" message. Had me laughing at how unnecessary and stupid it was to disable embedding on a two-second clip, something which is practically made for embedding.

^ just curious, which is your favorite?
EVO. It really is balanced. VF5FS is so unbalanced that it feels like Tekken at times. People just assume it's balanced because that's a part of VF's lore. If only they actually knew how much bullshit AM2 spawned with FS. Jacky is totally broken. His frames and DMG are ridiculous and there's an army of people who use the same set-ups for him because they are simply so safe and powerful that it's pretty much like turning god mode ON. Wallsplats are almost as bad as in Tekken 4. You can do almost infinities with them.

The game plays great... as long as you're not facing somebody who actually knows and abuses the broken frames and hitboxes...

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

Game Republic founder/director Yoshiki Okamoto comes out of hiding to reveal he has retired from the game industry and is now "making mobile phone games".

Video game creator Yoshiki Okamoto, the man behind Time Pilot, 1942, Final Fight, and Street Fighter 2, says he's retired from the business of making console video games.

Following the closure of his studio Game Republic, where he developed moderate successes like Folklore and two Genji titles for Sony, the famed game designer and producer tells Polygon he's now working on mobile games. His first mobile title, a "secret" game, he says, will be released in the near future, he says.

"I have retired," Okamoto said during an interview in Tokyo this week. "That's what I'm told to say [by my boss]."

Okamoto won't actually say who he's working for. But he believes that mobile games, not traditional, increasingly risky console games, are the path to his future success.
Quote:
Okamoto got out of the business of making video games for consoles when his studio, Game Republic, closed its offices last year. The company still exists, he says, but Okamoto is its only employee.

"Game Republic has not gone away, but we ran out of money," he explained. "So I had to let go of everybody."

At its peak, Game Republic employed about 300 people. The company was hit hard financially after the closure of publisher Brash Entertainment. The studio was developing a video game adaptation of Clash of the Titans for Brash and when the publisher folded in 2008, Game Republic lost "a large amount of money."

"But of course we had made the decision to go with Brash Entertainment," Okamoto says, shouldering some of the blame. Okamoto also pointed to the weakened global economy at the time, adding "It wasn't totally their fault."

"There were a lot of things I wanted to accomplish [at Game Republic]," Okamoto says, including a sequel to PlayStation 3 game Folklore, "But I need a sponsor to create those games." Even mobile titles, Okamoto says, require an investment of more than $600,000 to have a chance at success.

Re: Random Thoughts! v2.0

Quentin Tarantino is finally making Kill Bill Vol. III Tarantino revealed he wants part 3 to take place 10 years after the events of Kill Bill Vol.2, presumably so that Vernita Green’s daughter (Nikki) can be old enough to track down The Bride (Uma Thurman/Black Mamba) to get revenge for killing her mother right in front of her. Vernita Green (portrayed by Vivica A. Fox), A.K.A. Copperhead, was a member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. She took part in the massacre at the Two Pines Wedding Chapel. She was second on The Bride’s “Death List Five.” Four years after the massacre she is living a normal life in Pasadena, Ca. under the alias of Jeanie Bell. She was trained in hand-to-hand combat and knife fighting, and it is hinted that she and The Bride shared a mutual, professional respect for each other. At the start of the first movie, they engage in a vicious fight, destroying Vernita’s living room in the process. However, Green’s four-year-old daughter Nikki arrives home in the middle of the fight, and they stop fighting since the Bride doesn’t want to kill Vernita in front of her young daughter. Green sends Nikki to her room and she talks with the Bride over coffee, apologizing for betraying her and asking for mercy on behalf of her family. The Bride coldly refuses and they agree to meet in the middle of the night to have a knife fight. However, Vernita betrays her promise, and tries to shoot the Bride with a handgun concealed within a cereal box (aptly named Kaboom). She misses and the Bride throws a knife into her heart, killing her. Her death is witnessed by Nikki which the Bride had not intended. The Bride tells Nikki, “When you grow up, if you still feel raw about it, I’ll be waiting.” Well, looks like Copperhead’s daughter (secretly trained by the eye-patch wearing Elle, who we learn didn’t actually die in that trailer) is going to attempt to exact a bloody revenge! Oh, and let’s not forget that The Bride also had a four year old daughter. I have a feeling that these lil b*tches are going to be going at it H.A.M.!

You know what’s so uncomfortable about this? It shows that perhaps one of the most evil men in history, was a human being. That, on occasion, he could be nice, even flirty. That’s not all. You want to see evil people as evil, screaming horrible stuff over a desk with 20 microphones with 20, 000 people saluting them. The evil is clear and recognizable then. This shows a completely different image, it scares you because that means that evil isn’t a stereotype, that evil is not recognizable, that evil could be anyone. It scares you because this shows that evil could be lurking inside anyone and you’ll never ever know. Maybe in you?

Re: dev comment of the day topic

You're completely right that we shouldn't have a classification stamped on our heads at all times.

There are people who will immediately see the depth of the game and will enjoy it for that reason, however there are also people who will not understand what makes the game good at first glance but they recognize the base reasons something is fun.

Still lets look at OL and Dorian . Both men enjoy action games and have an undeniable passion for the genre.

OL enjoys the more stylistic and aesthetic aspect of the games. He gets into games like Blood Will Tell and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams and Enslaved. These games are all great but all very shallow. Its not to say OL dosen't recognize depth, it just seems like its not a priority to him. I think if I handed him Ninja Gaiden Black and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams he's take Onimusha and call it a day. He's the kind of player you need to capture with aesthetics and accessibility, once you've got them you can introduce them to the depth by offering rewards specifically for higher difficulties.

Dorian is completely different. He likes em when they're pretty, but it seems he really likes games to be deep and offer a challenge. This is the kind of guy who picks up Bayonetta, Devil May Cry 3, and Ninja Gaiden:Black and puts the game on hard. This is also the base customer, wanting more Dorian will keep buying a series because he trusts a developer. Combos, freedom, challenge, variety and performance is what this crowd wants. They help a developer grow, they can help them look for new ideas and challenge themselves by trying to break the walls the developer has made. The best way to keep this kind of person is to continue offering depth and allowing them the freedom to continue learning and experimenting with a system.

Both are hardcore, and theres a way to make the majority of both happy, but developers keep trying to go one way or the other.
Large quantities of Intelligence detected. Now I'm really turned on.
