Re: Old lady in Sakuragaoka giving hint to translate the let

Now also in English! 8)

http://s14.directupload.net/images/140106/s4l2u8kd.jpg

It's still really strange to meet her roaming around freely. What's funny is that she is voiced by the same actress as Xia-san and in that dialog she doesn't try to sound much different. Strange coincedence that she leads you to another old lady with the same voice.

By the way, she's still roaming around in Sakuragaoka the next day early in the morning, while it's snowing.
So I guess the time and weather don't have much to do with it. It seems to just be the failed route with Guangji that makes her appear.

Re: Fuku-san helping out in the basement?

Oh yeah, it finally worked! Thanks a lot, Radar!
Fuku-san is really funny when he comes down the second time. He's totally creeped out about the place, it really scares him. Man I just LOVE Shenmue to no end... even after maybe already up to 30 playthroughs and hundreds of discoveries, there is STILL something new to discover. The game just never stops to give! [-o<

You really just have to run around the basement for 2 hours straight without stopping long or locking on to anything. Basically just run, walk or move the camera around the whole time. Standing around or looking at things won't do it. That's the point!

I'm pretty sure the two notebook entries in the Dojo are triggered the same way. I think I'm going to try this out soon and record all that rare footage of Fuku-san. Also might send the writer of the guide on GameFAQs the info about these entries. Both so future Shenmue players will always know how to get these.

Two picture for you to enjoy until then:

Fuku-san helping out in the basement?

Okay, this is another "unsolved mystery" of Shenmue. I just can't figure out how to get this obscure scene where Fuku-san is coming down into the basement and gives Ryo some tips.

I'm currently going for a complete notebook and the quest to find the Phoenix mirror is really irritating around that time. There are two entries that are supposed to appear when you take 2 hours each while searching the Dojo. They didn't appear when I tried and since even the notebook guide is unsure how to get these I kinda gave up on them and moved into the basement where more of that waiting is supposed to give notebook entries. Since there's actually a screenshot of Fuku-san in the basement in Prima's official guide I had to try this one out no matter what, since I've never seen that!

Well, I had no luck and I have no idea how to make Fuku-san come down there. I tried looking at everything besides the things that give notebook entries and a lot of waiting until Ryo went to bed. I reloaded and tried again, this time just standing around the basement until 4 a.m. That's doing nothing for 19 hours!

How do you get all those entries and especially the scene with Fuku-san? Are there any prerequisites before starting to search for the mirror? Seems there have to be some or the game would simply give the scenes when you take too long while trying to figure things out.

Re: The Missing Sword

This is a in-game piece of dialogue Ryo says to himself when the user attempts to select the hand guard while holding the sword or vise virsa yes? If you have both with you in the Dojo and haven't messed with the hanging scrolls yet you can press A on the selected hand guard from the menu and you can watch Ryo try to put it over the sword.

I also thought about it being strange that they don't fit together, yet you see Iwao use the sword with the hand guard in a flashback. There is a very simple explanation though. The handguard get's attached from the other side, by removing the grip somehow, so it's tightly secured between the blade and the grip. Imagine it would just be pushed over the blade. The enemy could just pull it off your sword in combat, not really a good idea...
Why Ryo doesn't know how to properly attach it to the sword is beyond me.
Maybe Iwao just didn't tought him that or any sword combat whatsoever.

I'm no expert on swords but I heard this from a buddy who probably read it somewhere and I think it makes sense.

Re: How does shenmue hold up today?

To me Shenmue is just a timeless game that doesn't seem to age like other games did and still do.
It was THAT special when it came out. So much that it's still something unique to this day. The attention to detail is so incredible for a game made in the last century. It goes beyond the limits of the graphics itself. The music is also extremely strong and timeless. The free music is just pure magic!

The freedom in the game may not be able to rival todays sandbox games but Shenmue is an action adventure and for that genre it still delivers an incredible amount of ways for the player to spend time with it.

Above all else it's the characters and the story that stand the test of time. The facial animations and the voice acting have aged but the characters are still very believable and just extremely likeable. It might be slow, it may seem boring and it will take a bit of time to get into, but once you reached a certain point you'll just get sucked in this incredible experience.

The game just had a huge impact on me when I played it the first time back in 2000. Like described above it took a bit of time until I got sucked into the vortex of it's magic but then I absolutely fell in love with it. Over time it never got old. On the contrary! I still to this day discover new things, find new ways to enjoy the game and fall in love with it deeper and deeper. It's almost to the point that you could talk about "possesShen". Yeah I know, terrible pun.

Re: How old were you when you first played Shenmue?

Looking at the posts so far, a pattern is already starting to shape. Except for Radar everyone so far is in a rather close together group of 12-16 years old. I'd say that's a good age to get sucked into a game. At that age it's easy to get attached to something as your still growing up and learn, thus are "shapeable". But you can already understand and appreciate what's going on well enough. Well, I guess...

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Well the modeling is pretty good, even though the phoenix may be a little bit edgy. But the coloring is pretty bad, makes it look cheap and unfinished.

I still don't understand why no one ever released the mirrors as merchandise for the game. They could be made very close to how they look in the game for cheap and they would sell on their own.

BlueMue Shenmue videos

I'm currently working on the final phase of putting together a couple of videos with multiple rare, funny or otherwise interesting scenes and also other videos about Shenmue.

I'll start with what I've already uploaded in the past. Some of those are really old, starting in 2008.
This topic will house every Shenmue related video that I've made from now on. :D

Cool videos. Mind if I re-upload the video with Fuku-san's extra scenes to our channel?
Sure, why not. I'm doing these for the community and the further I can reach out with them, the happier I am!

Speaking of Fuku-san, here's the first real video of the series with a few more easily missed Fuku-san scenes.
I never knew about the first one until my recent notebook run. Pretty obscure but nice.

Re: Shenmue scene compilations and other videos

New video! Ryo is just to stupid for the forklift job.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DD2aLOSHmY

@johnvivant: No the Arm Break Fire in the video is leveled well under moderate. It's just the full version of the move. Once the enemy is grabbed you have to press X for the first armlock extension and then X+A for the second one on the ground, both with the right timing. I have trained it to moderate in that playthrough but despite the description implying that it changes I didn't notice any visual differences.

Did you know that Shenmue actually has authenticly labeled real life whisky in it? In the Heart Beats Bar you can look at some bottles of Glenfiddich single malt whisky. I wonder how they sneaked that in without any licensing...

Re: Fantasy Elements in Shenmue III

I'd personaly hate it if Shenmue III would go as far as Shenmue Online did. That's just too much, no matter how you look at it.
If I could choose I'd like Shenmue to have no supernatural element at all. The games just put so much focus on creating a realistic world that I honestly don't like that stuff in Shenmue. I don't really mind the stuff that happens at the end of Shenmue II anymore but the first few times it really made me cringe.

I hope they don't go overboard in the further chapters. As long as they have good explanations why Shenmue has powers and that the mirrors have some mysterious force I'm happy. They really could've went without the floating sword though...

Re: How many of you used Shenmue as a resource to learn Engl

Hey, don't count Germany to etc. :P

I can't quite match what the guy in the blog wrote but at the base of it I've had similar experiences.
I was already pretty far with English in school when I first played Shenmue so I was able to understand most of the game right away. It still helped me getting better though. That something that just happens if you're "forced" to take the entire thing in English and when you like it, you automatically attach to it and get the best teaching you could ever have!

Years later the internet contributed a hell of a lot more to my English. All the websites, forums and especially online shows like the AVGN helped me to get better and better, way beyond what you learn in school. You just get to know the language much more "natural" that way. Similar to the guy in the blog, I don't think about grammar or verb tenses when I write something, even though I learned that stuff in school many years ago. I just write, it just flows naturally. I don't even have to think in my native language anymore and carefully transalte what I want to express. I just think in English right away. :D

I also have a little story with Japanese as well. Shenmue II's Japanese dub teached me a couple of words though that's about it. I can barely form sentences in Japanese and reading is even worse, let alone writing. That's because I never cared as much as I maybe should have. I never touched any other Japanese material then Shenmue II, besides the random game that has a Japanese dub where I understand certain words that I learned from Shenmue.

Oh well, hopefully it was interesting enough to read my stuff.

Re: Fav char in Shenmue 1 other than Ryo?

Favorite character besides Ryo? That's simple broooo!

http://spindash.de/forum/master_dl/goro.gif

The way Goro is introduced, including the legendary blackmail line, the entire way he behaves and his theme song alone make him the greatest character in the game. All the funny dialoge he's in with Ryo... Goro is simply awesome!

If you're shooting for more serious character then I'd say Guizhang. He might be the typical fan favorite but he deservse it. He's just a cool guy and has a unique fighting style that he manages to pull of in a buisiness suit. That's some serious style right there!

Re: Angriest you've ever gotten at Shenmue?

That's one of the moments in the game that always baffles me. For some reason it forces you to come back the next day. Usually it's too late for the meeting, wich I guess is before or during the lunch break. This is a really dumb decission as you always run around and ask the stupid harbor workes dozends of times where to find a job.

I managed to get it him to show up the same day once. Went into the arcade early, showed Chai who's boss and then went to Jimmy and then straight to the harbor. There I talked about to the guy in front of the gate next to warehouse 18 and then with the foreman inside the warehouse. He'll tell you that he saw a young guy around warehouse 12 that recently got a job or something, basically leading you towards Goro. And tada, he showed up immediately.

Re: Riding a sinking ship on purpose?

I don't think he knew that prior to the first games release. That's what you're getting at, right? At least that's how I read it. It implies that Yu Suzuki planed beyond the release of the first game, wich he sure did but not in a way that he expected it to bomb and thus planed to let the second one end like it did.

Shenmue was his baby, he put so much time, effort and love into it. If you're giving that much of your life to a game like that I'd say you'll be absolutely sure that it will sell well. Yu Suzuki had a lot of experience in the market and since he did his best, he absolutely had the right to have faith in his work.

The decission of letting Shenmue II end on that cliffhanger was rather because the Dreamcast was already almost on it's last leg when they were in the middle of the developement of Shenmue II. I guess that it was originally intended to end at the end of disc 3, wich would go perfect with the ending of the first game. Then they decided to add the Guilin part very late in the process. It may seem strange to add more to the game in a desperate situation like that as one would assume it's the other way around and they actually cut off the game. But I think they all knew that there won't be a Shenmue III on Dreamcast and since Sega's future was unsure they knew there wont be a sequel in many years (and man were they right...)

I guess they added that part of the game for the players really. Like "Hey you're possibly have to wait a decade or more for III but at least here you finally have the meeting with Shenhua, the girl from Ryo's dream and that was on like every artwork and cover of the games." Maybe then they actually planned to spark a huge demand for Shenmue III among players with the massive cliffhanger. Interesting thoughts...

Re: Sega of Japan Tweets New Shenmue T-shirt

I just got this shirt today. I had to order it on Amazon Japan through SMJ because I didn't have the credit card needed for the order directly at their shop.

Anyway I carefully took it out of the packaging to take a closer look at the back side wich is obviously the interesting part about it. It looks just like you'd imagine it by looking at the pictures. The print is very nice and the fabric is rather thick and strong. Good quality I'd say and a worthy Shenmue shirt to have!

@el_cown: Nah, your really thinking too far here. Just because he showed a veeeeery crude overview of the story, including how the big fight ends and what happens after that doesn't mean Yu gave up on Shenmue. Let's be honest about those two points. Everyone probably already figured out that that's going to happen. The fight with Lan Di has to happen (like I said earlier, even when Ryo gave up on revenge) and the ending is really cliche and common in all sorts of media. I wouldn't say these are actual spoilers at all.
