Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

I don't think Riku is doing anything wrong at all to be honest, as OL said , it's just a video game, if someone wants to pay over the odds for it, then that's fair game. I also see where SC is coming from too though, if someone is buying entire stocks of the game and making it nearly impossible for others to buy it just so they can sell them all at a higher price, then yeah that's very shystie (and so are those fools who "phantom" buy stuff on ebay to deliberately raise the value of certain items). But anyone who really wanted Ni No Kuni Wizard Edition at the normal price had more than enough opportunity, so as I said, if they're now willing to pay more for a fancy edition of a game (and clearly have more disposable income then me!), I'd let them.

I've done the same thing in the past. I was in a shop once, and saw two copies of MGS subsistence being sold for £15. I bought both and stuck one of them on ebay straight away for £45 (undercutting the other sellers), and it sold within minutes. Did I feel guilty? Not at all.

Riku just made a good investment, it's that simple. Sure, I'd gain respect for you if you gave it away the game for free, but I wouldn't lose respect for you if you didn't, we live in a capitalist society not a buddhist monastry, and have to play by the rules to an extent. Riku isn't being dishonest and that's the main thing to me.

All this talk of "morals" is getting way off the subject, and a it's a very contentious subject itself. Are we naturally "moral", is it human nature? It can be argued either way, but you only need to look at the different societies or different time periods to see how variable morality can be.

Re: Did Shenmue have the best music ever?

I kind of agree with this, even though I do enjoy it as stand alone music too. I don't think it can even really be called "bad" though, it's true it had to work within the limits that game music had back then, but some of the compositions capture that certain mystique that Shenmue had (or indeed gave Shenmue that mystique it has) so very finely. It balances the tone of the game incredibly well, always hinting at the mystic, even while Ryo is trudging through the mundane streets of doubita.

Bad is an inaccurate word in this instance, but you almost prove my point. It needs the game shenmue for it to work. Out of that context it really isn't anything special.

And if anything that heightens its greatness as a soundtrack composition.

Agreed. Though I think I enjoy listening to it on it's own for precisely the reason that you don't. I enjoy sticking some of it on while I'm studying or the like, specifically because it doesn't yank your attention away from whatever it is your doing and I don't find it distracting. it's simple but yet still has a nice atmospheric feel to it. I can't really listen to most of the types of music I love while I'm working, but something like Shenmue's music (especially the "FREE" songs) goes down well.

Re: Outdated daily things we take for granted

^ Please clarify the link your trying to make between circumcision and moderation of sexual activities. That's a nonsense. Not to diss anyone who has been circumcised, but as far as I'm concerned we're born with a foreskin for a reason. If someone grows up and decides "hey I like the idea of having no foreskin, it will help with hygiene" then by all means go for it. But is it really necessary to force it on an unwitting baby? Because lets face it, most parents aren't making that call due to the supposed argument of hygiene, it comes down to ridiculous religious dogma. It's exactly like when dog breeders say "I should allowed to dock my Boxer dog's tail, otherwise he might bash it against the wall and hurt himself", piss off, you just want to dock the dog's tail because you think that's how Boxers are supposed to look. I truly hate all this dogmatic idiocy. Which brings me nicely onto this:

This is also why many young western men become fans of anime and east Asian games, culture, etc. For example, Japanese culture has not been subjected to as much arbitrary alteration as in the west, so western males find eastern females to be more natural, more feminine, and, quite frankly, therefore, less abrasive.

I disagree with nearly everything you have written here. Firstly Japan has been subject to vast influence and alteration from the west, what planet are you living on? Secondly, the things I dislike most about Japan are the dogmatic aspects of it's society. I sometimes think that Japan, in a way, got the worst of both worlds. The modernising influence the west has caused modern Japan to lose connection with or just forget much of the truly beneficial ancient knowledge that was inherent over there, but frustratingly, at the same time Japan has insisted on clinging on to many completely pointless dogmatic practises which serve no helpful purpose. OK, so this isn't entirely fair of me, as there are some examples of the opposite being true too, and I'm certainly being a tad judgemental. But still.

I don't like dogma. Yet I also don't like losing sight of the beneficial knowledge and practices that originate from the worlds ancient cultures. We just need to be discerning, and be able to separate the helpful from the unhelpful. Unfortunately it seems most people can only go to one extreme or the other, and the result is that we often end up losing on both fronts.

Re: Did Shenmue have the best music ever?

It's definitely up there, and probably my personal favourite, but there is some fantastic quality video game music out there today. A recent particular favourite of mine is the frankly epic soundtrack to Nier. Deadly Premonition's also gets an honourable mention and has some perfect tunes, though it is probably just a little too schizophrenic for me on the whole, mind, that actually works for the game to be honest. A slightly less left field choice would be the poppy but cinematic score to FF13, yeah yeah I know some of it "sounds like music the composer has already done for other games", but it fit the game perfectly and definitely added to my enjoyment of it.

Still nothing quite gives me the chills like Mue's soundtrack does.

Haha, fair enough, we all have odd passions for one thing or another. So, is the T43371 actually considered a well made time telling piece too, or is it mostly just revered for it being Ryo's watch? And yeah I don't know why Ryo got gimped on the calender function, he could have used that! Congrats on getting your watch after so many years.

Re: What movie are you watching right now?

Just watched Black Death starring the one and only Seany Bean. I'd never heard of this film before, but when I saw it featured Sean-"the man"- Bean kitted up in medieval amour/ weaponry, and brooding like only he knows how, I was sold! What I wasn't expecting though, was for the film to be quite as good as it was. Certainly one of the most memorable and haunting film depictions of medieval England that I've seen. The writing was more nuanced than I expected on the whole, and the plot definitely ended up going in a different direction to the standard fair that I was anticipating, the film having a nice and bleak little subtext on how fanaticism effects us. The postscript type segment that the film ends on, is perhaps a little unnecessary and overt, the movie would have been better off rolling the credits a couple minutes sooner in my opinion. Still, I would recommend Black Death, as when it comes to Bean snarling and brandishing swords, you could do worse than this

Re: Shenmue Timex watch

Have to confess I didn't know that the"expedition" series from timex didn't existed before 1997! And I just called myself an expert. I have always taken for granted that ryo used a watch from the 80's and not from the future? The indiglo light didn't exist at shenmue's time either.

Ah that makes a bit more sense. When you said it was from the 80's I thought that was a surprisingly authentic bit of product placement from Timex. It makes more sense commercially for it to have been a current model I guess, or maybe...time travel will factor into the story of Shenmue 3? Iwao hazuki was a time traveler!!

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

It's not being chauvinist per say, but I think most of us would be more excited if it were a hero. I love heroines and have played their games, but a game like Shenmue is one that a male wants to bond with to a certain degree and you won't be able to fully do that with this game unless you're gay.

BTW I got my Dingoo today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I won't be needing any games for........ ever! :D

Yeah, but by the same token you could argue that female gamers would be able to relate better to a game like that with a female protagonist. Personally, I don't really understand how any mature person can be actively put off by the idea of having to control a female protagonist to be honest, whether the game is open world or not, the gender of the character makes almost no difference to me. It's a shame that the vast majority of game developers feel like they have to pander to the majority demographic (or at least perceived majority) of gamers: white male teengers, and so we overwhelmingly end up with white male protagonists. More diversity would be welcome.

As for Dreamfall, is it PC only?

Re: Metal Gear series

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-22-kojima-says-mgs-ground-zeroes-may-be-too-risky-to-be-publish-sell

Kojima getting "mature" and "taboo" on our arses with the new MGS! What could this mean? Personally I still rate MGS 1 as being the pound for pound most mature MGS game, not that the other games didn't have poignant moments, it's just that they were usually a tad more jarring and harder to take seriously in the context of all the other extreme ridiculousness or overblown indulgence (things that I did like too, to be honest) that they were caught up in.

I like the way Koj is talking though, even if it doesn't turn out as "taboo" as he's hyping it (I find it unlikely that it will be), it sounds like he's got his creative juices flowing.

Re: [Article]Why Shenmue 3 must never be made

 Here we go again. Despite the fact that the author of this article clearly believes himself to be a contrarian, he's not, in fact this view seems to be the mainstream one in many corners of the internet. I've personally had the experience of being bashed over the head with "but it will never live up to expectations/Sega will never provide a big enough budget/ those days of gaming are OVER/ get over it and move on" replies on certain forums while trying to drum up support for the tweethon.

I'm afraid I have little patience for cowardice on the level of "let's not try and get what we want in case it's not as good as we hoped." Seriously, screw that.

^this. And people always forget that for every dud franchise reboot (well, every truckload admittedly..), there's always a surprise gem that beats the odds, a game that shouldn't have been as good as it is, but is. Something like XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Who thought that was going to work out well prior to it's release?

Also the author does give the impression he's the type who'll be checking this forum later, probably hoping to see a bunch of angry fans "spunk creamy-hot vitriolic hate all over my face". Well, his face.

Why not 1st of da month

I love 1st of the Month, it's legit probably one of my all time fav hip hop songs. But it's one big ode to financial welfare checks, and I'm not sure that would gel quite as well with America's love of uber-capitalism as much as the Pied Piper R kells's ode to partying and getting jiggy,

Actually now that I think of it one of the other relief tracks was that world's greatest one by Mr. Kelly. I guess I should put him on my "Good bloke" list.

Re: Team Yu needs you!

I'm the curious as to how effective people expect this to be. It seems ill aimed.

I'd say the best outlet for something like this would be a major gaming news medium. That would draw more views from Sega execs than a few fan pages.

Sure, getting our cause promoted on a big gaming site is also a boon, but the problem is, it's there one day and then it's forgotten about, and the Sega execs can go back to their usual policy of sweeping Shenmue under the carpet. There have been countless amounts of sporadic infrequent articles about Shenmue on gaming sites that disappear quickly, not to mention fan campaigns aimed directly at Sega execs (such as the famously lovable capsule toy campaign, amongst others) but they have been very easy for Sega to brush aside and ignore, leaving us disheartened every time.

This campaign differentiates itself in a number of key ways thanks to wonders of current social media: 1. it's incredibly easy to get on board with, almost anyone can spare a minute to send a tweet 2. It allows us to be persistent, and not just have one flash in the pan burst of activity before fizzling out, but instead continue to grow and be an ever louder voice in Sega's ears. The campaign is into it's second year now, and it continues to grow larger and gain traction 3. In a way, it allows us to circumnavigate Sega's execs, thanks to the very public medium that twitter is. If we can continue to make enough noise like that in a public space with thousands upon thousands of viewers, it won't be viable for Sega to keep up it's act of silence, something will have to give, we know that and they know that, we just have to keep going from strength to strength as we currently are doing.

And there other ideas and plans being kicked around too, the tweetathon as it currently is, is by no means the full scope of our ambitions. But it does serve as the core that is keeping the fanbase active and united once more, and from there we can continue to evolve.

Re: Hello there, after all these years...

Hello there! Lovely introduction thread. I've been telling folks around these parts that having an introduction thread or subforum would be nice, for ages!

I know completely how you feel about Shenmue, it's a strange game, and an inherently nostalgic one. A wistful longing for the past (as well as an appreciation for the journey towards the future) is pre built into the game's DNA. Obviously there's the fact that the game was set a couple decades into the past on it's release, but there's also the fact that Ryo loses his father at the beginning of the game, and while this doesn't quite immediately strip him of all his small town stability and comfort -he initially still his has curfews, pocket money and childhood friends amongst other things- it does set him on a speeding course towards adulthood, and eventually forces him to say goodbye to ALL of those things, leaving them to be nothing but warm cuddly memories while we're on the streets of Kowloon.

But at the same time, the game always left us all with an intense desire to drive into Ryo's ultimate destiny, leaving every creature comfort and friend in our dust as we moved towards an almost familiar yet unfamiliar looking fate. The game's intense relationship between nostalgia and a desire to move forwards towards one's destiny, is no doubt only strengthened by the fact that the games are quite old now (reminding many of us of our childhoods or younger years), yet nearly all of us here still feel a prolonged and unsatisfied desire to move forward in Ryo's abruptly curtailed journey.

Oh dear..it's 6am and I'm getting bloody poetic about Shenmue again...sorry, this tends to happen every 6 months or so.

Re: 'MERICA some towns want gun ownership mandatory

I guess it's possible you might have genuinely been happier in the east, but I sometimes wonder whether people who say that kind of thing are actually being realistic about what the "east" is like. One will encounter much of the same difficulties anywhere in world as far as I can see. There are differences of course, but sometimes I think people can be a bit romantic about the notion of living in places like Japan or China or whatever. Especially as they just as hyper materialistic (maybe even more so now) as the west is. You could argue that their cultures are perhaps less individualistic than ours, but even then there are negatives that go along with that, like the extra pressure to conform and fit in. They are still great places, but I think sometimes people aren't realistic. It's swings and roundabouts, there are plenty of things you could despise about the culture of those eastern countries too.

But seriously. "Women's Day"? meh. I'm often the most outspoken in regards of advancing women's rights, but I find this all unnecessary. Secure women don't require a day "just for them" to feel better about themselves. They might better make everyday "equality day" and cease the need of highlighting the fact that we're all different. It's the same with "black history month". Do African Americas really feel better that we've consolidated the achievements of an entire race into one month a year? Well... maybe they do. I don't know. I can't speak for them. But if I were one of them I myself would see no need. Maybe I'm just crazy though.

Watched The Year of Living Dangerously starring a young Mel Gibson, the other day. It was actually pretty decent, better than I was expecting. It also reminds one of Mel's 80's heyday, he really was the quintessential ruggedly handsome American hero. Re: I'm getting a little sick of the medias attack on the Wi

I stumbled across this post on another certain gaming forum today. It made me laugh, but I'd be lying if a said that I also didn't agree with most of it. I don't think even hardcore Nintendo fans can really deny that the poster is making some pretty fair points.

The trouble with Nintendo

Here's some thoughts I've had about what's wrong with Nintendo.

1) Cheapskates.
Spend some money. Open more studios. Hire some new talent. Maybe set up a few studios in the West.

I don't know why this isn't happening. Nintendo have a great selection of IP. Titles like Zelda, Metroid and Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, New Super Mario Bros, Starfox and of course Pokemon seem to do pretty well for them. These titles offer lots of different playing opportunities and conceivably mean Nintendo could offer something for everyone.

A lot of these games are so well established everyone knows what's going to happen before they play the game. Zelda? Hookshot now is it, oh no, my mistake, I'm getting the Boomerang now. I liked learning the spin attack again. No wait, it's a completely different game because in this one you ride about on a rhino instead of a horse.
Nintendo need not expend it's “magic” on these titles. Get them farmed out (like the GBC Capcom Zeldas or Namco's GC F-Zero) or hire more developers to make these games. They're guaranteed moneyspinners, and the formula is so well defined that it doesn't make sense to waste valuable talent on developing them. Instead, they should use their development superstar(s) to come up with new ideas and have them realised in exciting new pieces of software.

The Legends are always coming. Get the games made and on the shelves!
Nintendo have got so much IP that if they wanted to, they could release a fan favourite title every month for years. WiiU would have been THE console to have. Who could resist a launch with Mario, Metroid, Zelda and Mario Kart? Why don't they do it? Because they haven't got enough staff to make the games? They don't want to crowd out 3rd parties? Enjoy your big franchise title in 2 years time - the title that you bought a console on the strength of. The Legends Are Coming! What are Nintendo doing? Where are the games? Why do they take so long to release them? People would buy two Metroids, two Zeldas two whatever else's over the course of a console's life. As is, you get neither, loyal purchaser. Not for years. The legends ARE coming. Get third parties making your games and you're not choking them out either. As an aside, when did Nintendo stop development of games for Wii? It's not like they worked on Wii software until the WiiU was released was it? What are they doing? What have they been doing? Making top notch experiences like MiiVerse?
2) Cheapskates.
Why don't Nintendo make hardware that represents an advancement of the form? With the 3DS it's not so bad, but with the WiiU they've shot themselves in the foot in a big way. Got an Exclusive WiiU title coming, Ubisoft? Seen those Sales figures? They're terrible, aren't they? Fortunately for you, Nintendo created a console that's about as powerful as the ones that came out 7 years ago so you'll be able to port it across to the other consoles without too much bother. Nintendo have got the resistive screened beauty into people's hands, and they've done it a year before the next round of hardware releases occur. A full year to build up a massive userbase. No games. No Games. Why? Because they're being held back to simultaneously release on PS360, 3 months before those consoles have successors on the shelves. What about first party games though? No games. No Games. Why? Too slow to make them, not enough developers. Well, with this old tech the system must be nice and cheap, right? NO! They've packaged every single one with a controller that costs more than any other, not communicated why the controller is amazing and now nobody wants to pay extra for something that looks the same as the much better supported systems elsewhere in your favourite retailer's shop.

3) Cheapskates
Let's invest in new IP. They'd have to hire more developers, OBVS (not allowed - $$$) but assume that they have new people onboard. Here's a Nintendo press conference: Miyamoto strolls out and says “I am pleased to announce these brilliant new minds that I have been working with. They have brilliant games for you, I have been overseeing their ideas and I love them.” They get the Miyamoto Seal Of Approval and their games will be out before the PS4 is on shelves. PANDEMONIUM. Miyamoto says these games are amazing?!!? Who knows games better than he?! I cannot wait. What does Miyamoto do now? Is he fully onboard with many games? How long until he retires? Nintendo need to get their eggs out of that basket and start promoting for the future.

Imagine a release schedule like this:
January: Metroid
February: New Miyamoto approved IP
March: Mario
April: Zelda
May: StarFox
June: Smash Bros
July: New Miyamoto IP
August: Mario Tennis
September: Rayman Legends (An authentic third party title, just for fun!)
October: Pikmin
November: F-zero
December: Pokemon Hue of Choice

Bit Better than
January: Relax, post Christmas
February:
Rayman (Delayed)
March: Cancelled.
April: Port of last year's PS360 hit with controller gimmick tacked on.
And so on, Isn't it?

Not possible? Why? Get the games made and out on shelves. Hey, Capcom, fancy making some money? Knock us up a Starfox will you? People want to buy it.

4) Cheapskates
Why is everything always cheap with them? Tiny battery when there's room for a big one. I've got to charge it up every ten minutes now. Oh, I can't be bothered. Why's the web browser on 3DS so bad? Like worse than a £100 smartphone bad. Why's the screen always so bad on Nintendo stuff? Like worse than on a £100 smartphone bad. Why does their hardware match last gen's specs? Why do purchases/downloads take forever in the E-shop? How much money did you save on that battery, the slow processor and the crappy screen? Was it worth making a product that irritates? Why bother putting a web browser in 3DS if it's that bad? Just don't do it.

5) Tight arses
How old's this game now? 25 years. How many times have people bought it now? About 5 times each. Hmm. How much shall we sell it on the E-Shop for? £12? Hmm. Let's go for £13.99. Nintendo sell everything from their back catalogue at “it'd be rude to” prices. Who wants this stuff enough to pay real money for them? As in, in significant numbers? Do I want to buy their system when I know I'm going to be paying top price for everything all the time? I'm not so keen. Will I get to keep those purchases? No, the account doesn't transfer and they want to charge me again later.

I think Nintendo need to invest in their future. Refusing to do so has screwed over the WiiU, the people who've bought it and the developers who've started work on games for the platform.

If they want to ignore the rest of the world I don't know why they don't do it properly, they could go completely self sustaining and only have Nintendo games on their platforms.

And that's some of what I think about Nintendo.

But yeah, we all know what the only thing that can save the Wii U is: The Shnemue License ;-)

Re: Things That Made You Laugh Today

Poor squirrel  that should be in the "Things that made you sad today" thread. Wait, do we even have that thread?

Re: The Bioshock thread

This is exactly why a score at the end of a review will always be justifiable. Yeah, yeah, I know people like to bash people who just skip straight to the score and don't bother with the writing, but sometimes one does not wish to read the writing, and Bioshock infinite in exactly one such time.

Re: Random Thoughts! v2.0

why was qwerty banned again?

Can't remember exactly, but I think it basically boiled down to him constantly being a contrarian in regards to following certain rules, which is to say he basically had a real problem posting respectfully, and hated it when he was told he was wrong. He was also constantly dogging Ryudo at practically every turn, and derailing threads with their arguing. I think he ultimately sent some abusive PM to Peter (who in all honesty was pretty fair handed and even lenient to the guy) or something. Personally I don't really get why anyone would be sad about his banning, he nearly never posted anything that wasn't on the level of crude school playground humour, and was usually looking to provoke someone or another. And yeah, Hai was surely qwerty.

It's actually pretty depressing that for whatever reason my mind has retained this completely pointless information. Eh.
