the painting of ico was made by my dad several years ago.

Re: What movie are you watching right now?

So since 'Pulse' was so good I decided to try out another of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's movies called 'Loft' which was another effective supernatural chiller. Had a weird part near the end but then gets back on track and produces some fine chills. Seen really mixed reception to it and don't understand why. It has an eerie quietness to its horror that the best Japanese horror tend to have and it's certainly better than most horror I've seen Hollywood produce in the past decade so yeah, weird. Anyway, a solid horror film that does a decent job of merging the psychological and supernatural horror genres together. Will be trying 'The Cure' next out of Kurosawa's filmography.

Sweet. It's actually just 'Cure,' but y'know, all the same. Cure is less of a horror flick than much of Kurosawa's other work, nothing supernatural about it at all; it's a bit more of a detective thriller type of thing, yet it retains that same type of eerie quietness he's so good at.
I haven't seen Loft myself, but I'll have to get around to it one of these days. Pulse is definitely a favorite of mine.

Since I'm playing Alien: Isolation again, I got the urge to watch the original Alien. It's been so long since I last saw it that it kind of felt new to me, outside of a few scenes. Great flick, even if the xenomorph costume is a bit disappointing in hindsight (they didn't quite have its otherworldly, animalistic mannerisms down yet). It's definitely one of those movies you look back on and can easily understand why it left such a lasting impact; back in 1979, something like this was totally new and different, a very far cry from the other sci-fi ventures floating around at the time. And despite the less-than-convincing movement of the actor in the costume, the HR Giger design work for it must have been ridiculously striking back then. Hell, it's still striking to me, even after I've seen it a million times in so many different types of context. Just classic stuff all around.
And looking at the movie itself, I can definitely say I prefer this style of flick for the Alien franchise, rather than the more actionous ones that would follow. Put in a legitimate horror setting, that fucking xenomorph remains scary as hell, and I really can't say that about many other movie monsters. They're working on not one, but two new Alien movies at the moment, but I don't think either one is really set to be horror. But that's what we need another of: a legitimately scary Alien flick. Skip the James Cameron action bullshit.

Re: General Anime Discussion

Currently watching this on-going puppet anime series called Thunderbolt Fantasy. I went into it with very low expectations since they are using puppets but it slowly started growing on me. Very surprised at the production value in the special effects, choreography, and camera shots. Besides those aspects the character dialogue and interactions with each other is very witty/satirical.

The Kowloon Walled City Arcade- Photo Album

Recently went to the famous "Kawasaki Warehouse" arcade that's here in Japan. You've probably seen the article and a few shots of it online in the past, but here it is in better detail shot by yours truely. Peter, Adam Sipione and I had a pretty fun time playing Outrun and other arcade games in here too.

You can really see the attention to detail they put into the creation of this place.

Re: What TV series are you watching?

Just binge watched Stranger Things last night. Haven't been so hooked up to a series since True Detective. The soundtrack and 80's references alone warrant the viewing if you are fond of that period.

Re: Latest Purchases

I gotta report that I returned the Sony TV and switched to an LG OLED C6. It looks a bit lost in comparison as it's only a 55" model and the bezel is really thin. The curved design also gives it more of a different appearance.

http://i.imgur.com/IWkarNR.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/d6Ih9KM.jpg

Long story short, the Sony's LCD had too many limitations and issues and I returned it. I came to the conclusion that OLED just works better for me and I can live much better with the limits of this technology. OLED is overpriced but this 55" model has come down a lot and is priced very reasonably. Even though I really wanted 65" I can live with it for now as I decided not to keep it for very long. There is enough time for another generation of new models until Shenmue III comes out and that's when I really want the fresh best TV.

Re: Latest Purchases

Just picked up an LG 4K UHD HDR Pro 50 inch Smart TV for $399 at Best Buy. I think it was today only, but holy shit I couldnt pass that up. Will post pictures of it later.

Now I have a TV that will work correctly with my PS4, and I will actually get full resolution from my cable as well! Boss.

Re: Latest Purchases

After saving what I could for months I found an early BF deal at Sam's I couldn't pass up. Vizio E65-E1, a 65" 4k display. A couple quick pics taken from my cell.

http://i.imgur.com/Qnc2SyC.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/0QhChKF.jpg

It omits HDR, a TV turner, higher refresh rates (only 60hz) and has only so so speakers but these were worthwhile concessions for me to get a 65" display for $598. I did want HDR to make it more future proof, but that basically would have doubled the price outright. So far I am very pleased, but it's so damn big I'm going to have to find another place for my Shenmue record frame.

Anecdotes About Yu Suzuki From Yuji Naka | DenFamiNicoGamer

In February, SEGA legend Yuji Naka was a special guest on an informal talk show streamed live online by the Japanese site DenFamiNicoGamer.

http://i.imgur.com/Io4LbL0.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/g5pt52Im.jpg

Some of the inside stories he shared about his early days at SEGA are about Yu Suzuki, who was working there at the time. In particular, one previously-unheard episode ended up with the two not speaking for a couple of years!

I've translated these to English in this blog post:

Wreckfest - Spiritual Successor to Destruction Derby

Not sure how many of you remember or even played Destruction Derby back in the day but it was an absolute blast and one of my favorite racers on PS1.

Original PS1 game:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/85/Destructionderby3.jpg

Two days ago I discovered Wreckfest which is being done by BugBear who created Flatout. Wreckfest is essentially Destruction Derby but for today's hardware. It's going to be available on PC, PS4 and X1.

Apparently, their main site http://www.wreckfestgame.com is taking preorders which act as a form of crowd funding. The list of games I would crowd fund is very small. Shenmue 3 was obviously the top of that list followed by the 4th if it becomes necessary. Destruction Derby and a Dino Crisis reboot were basically the only others. Due to that, I personally went with the $25 PS4 version which gets me the game (no physical copy planned), soundtrack and a couple other perks.

https://youtu.be/rDPSVo0X0LE

I haven't seen anyone talk about this game and as Destruction Derby was a favorite of mine, I thought I would give you guys a heads up. If you enjoy crashing cars, this is probably right up your alley. Thought I would pass the word as this is said to release by end of spring or summer this year. Get it at $25 instead of the $50 they will be asking. There's even a $20 tier if you just want the game. The last tier is $70 which gets your name in the credits and a bunch of other stuff I don't really care about.

My Recent Trip to Dobuita Street and The Harbor in Yokosuka

Update 2! Video 2 on The Harbor!
https://youtu.be/6sMqic_P02g
Hi Everyone.

I recently went to Japan for vacation/business and decided to take a trip to Yokosuka for some research.

Big thanks to Switch for showing me around :D

We took many photos of The Harbor and Dobuita Street which you can find below! We took lots of video footage too which will be uploaded at a later time to my Youtube channel.

It is amazing that even in 2017, Shenmue still is an accurate representation of Dobuita Street!

If you want to travel to Dobuita, feel free to PM me any questions you may have!

We ran into another Shenmue Fan who made a blog out of our visit here:
https://oninokokoro.wordpress.com/2017/04/04/%e6%a8%aa%e9%a0%88%e8%b3%80%e5%b8%82%e3%81%ae%e3%80%8c%e3%81%a9%e3%81%b6%e6%9d%bf%e9%80%9a%e3%82%8a%e3%80%8dyokosuka-citys-dobuita-street-%e7%a5%9e%e5%a5%88%e5%b7%9d/

I spoiler tagged each section of photos since there are 90+ photos in total!

Enjoy!

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

So... My summer Car. You cannot really "finish" the game, but I have been playing the game enough to be able to write a brief review, I think.

I brought the game on a whim a few weeks ago, after binge watching Robbaz's videos of the game , and I unexpectedly fell in love with the game pretty quickly. This game is basically an ultra detailed life simulator game where you build a car. You play as an 18 year guy in 1995, whose parents are away from home during the summer and apparently they task you to "fix" your uncle's car. The car is literally a big pile of parts, and you have to put everything together, starting from the engine block. The game requires you to tighten every nut and bolt (you also have to choose the right wrench for the screws), and tune the car properly so it can run. If you do not follow a guide, this makes the game extremely difficult, but ultra rewarding when you get the car running for the first time. I spent an entire real world night putting the car together, like I started before the sun went down and when I finished the sun was up for a few hours. I'm sure I was playing for about 12 hours, but the time went by so fast. The car even wasn't completely finished (I didn't put on the doors, exhaust, dash, and other misc parts that wasn't needed for the car to start), but I did get the car running, which was SO satisfying. After you get the car running, you can drive it around to test it out, or bring it straight to the shop so you can get some guy to inspect your car, and if you pass, you get your license plates. If you drive you car around without license plates, the cops will chase you down if you see them, but they are not too hard to avoid in the game. I didn't even get my car inspected until I accidentally came across the shop for the first time.

You can also do various jobs to get money for upgrades and repairs for your car. Your main job is to drain septic tanks, and the process is as detailed as you expect it to be in a game like this. You have to get the hose out, attach it to your truck, dump it in the tank, and turn on the hydraulic pump. There are also other ways to earn money, such as picking people up from the bar, brewing booze, and delivering lumber. The atmosphere of the game is pretty great, and you can tell the game is a real labor of love. Oh yea, the game is also permadeath by default so if you get in a bad accident, or someone runs you over, your save gets deleted and you have to start all over again.

The negatives I have to say about the game is that it is basically impossible to play unless you have a steering wheel controller. You spend the majority of your time in game on crappy dirt roads that cause your car to veer in crazy directions if you go slightly off-road, and usually gets stuck or flips over. This is mostly because that the dirt roads have a sharp drop-off, and the terrain is very low poly. Going off road wouldn't be so dangerous if they doubled the polygons of the terrain and made things smoother. Also you live ultra far from town, so expect at least a 15-25min real life drive to town to buy anything, or pick up junk you order in mail. You can take a more direct route to town using the boat to travel through the lake, though. You also cannot save unless you are near a toilet so if you are in the middle of nowhere (like 75% of the map), you are going to have to travel pretty far just to save and quit.

Overall I think I would give the game a 7/10. It is an ultra satisfying game, but I don't think I'll continue playing the game after I die. If the terrain wasn't so terrible, I would probably give it a 9/10.

Re: Kickstarter Update #66 - Yu-san on story-building

Mystical elements are intrinsic to the game's plot. Seriously, if it bothers you then you've spent fifteen years pining over the wrong franchise, because that's just what Shenmue is, like it or not.

Re: Recent Gaming Purchases

Recent pickups, some cheap dc games scratched off the list as well as sonic cd which I found for cheap because no manual. That fishing controller though, it's absurdly fun with Sega bass fishing.
And now I'm running out of space, guess I'll have to wait until I move into my new home.

Here's the neo geo cd.
Got 2 games for it atm, samurai spirits 2 and final fight 3.
Awesome system with awfully long loadtimes [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY].
Still getting the pad in the post from japan.
Ps: don't mind the clusterf*ck of cables behind the system there's 20 consoles all hooked up at the same time. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/00c23b922dde0c4aba2c9c692d9c5b03.jpg

Winter Heating in Japan | Shenmue Realism

Today's post on the Phantom River Stone blog looks at some of the realistic detail depicted in Shenmue relating to heating in the 1980s as the Yokosuka winter sets in. Traditionally-built Japanese house like Ryo's are not well suited for keeping the cold out (or the heat in), but ingenious devices such as the kotatsu help to make up for it.

Shenmue The Movie Dub Differences

The production quality of Shenmue The Movie is very debatable as it omits a lot of really important scenes and changes music timing quite a bit. But it undeniably has much higher quality voices than the game.
Because of that it's easy to assume that the movie has been redubbed since the whole audio mix has been redone from scratch anyway. That is not true however, as they we're able to use the uncompressed recordings... for the most part. And here things are getting interesting.

You see, the video footage for the movie has been captured from the Japanese version of the game. Since the movie was designed to play with the English dub this was a somewhat stupid decission because they had to work with the Japanese lip syncing of the game. This forced them to redo a few lines here and there in order to match the spoken words with the lip animation on screen. Sometimes they just used bits from a different scene, repeated or shuffled things around a bit but every now and then they seem to have made some new recordings just for the movie.

I've put all the changes in one video, comparing the game and the DVD back to back. In order to do this I had to watch the whole thing and compare it to the game bit by bit. This obviously took hours and so did the scene gathering and editing. This was a lot more work than necessary, really... Since it was taking long enough already I also didn't include the minor grunts during fights or QTEs, as well as instances where some lines were shuffled around or dialogue cut short. After all those don't add anything, let alone something new.

https://youtu.be/Jm9iK3XNTyE

I'd love to make a comparison like this with the Japanese version. As far as I know the Japanese dub has only been added for the DVD release and it might actually be a full redub. I know for a fact that Lan Di actually threatens Iwao to kill (korose) Ryo when he's holding him up. But I don't think I know Japanese nearly enough to notice all the fine nuances in the wording that the DVDs voices might have to make a proper comparison.

Finally, after well over a decade and a half of waiting...this game is mine .

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/64/PanzerDragoonSagaBox.jpg/250px-PanzerDragoonSagaBox.jpg

Yes, it's complete, yes it works, yes I love this series dearly (number 2 favourite SEGA series behind Shenmue and just in front of Shinobi which I also love - Sonic probably being my fourth or fifth next to Streets of Rage), yes I have a Saturn to play it on (which I have been all weekend), yes it was a lot of money but far less than what it normally goes for, yes I really have waited a decade and a half to purchase this game like a sad bastard and yes it is fucking awesome .
