Re: No used games is a wonderful idea

Here's are some truly excellent articles on the whole used games debate, straight from the folks at Games Industry, and people actually in the business.

There are many people in the industry in the articles and in the comments section that disprove of the DRM, while there are also some who try to justify it.

Some choice quotes, both for and against.

First of all let me dispel the myth about DRM protecting anything. The truth is it does not work. It’s as simple as that. The technology which is supposed to protect games against illegal copying is cracked within hours of the release of every single game. So, that’s wasted money and development just to implement it. But that’s not the worst part. DRM, in most cases, requires users to enter serial numbers, validate his or her machine, and be connected to the Internet while they authenticate – and possibly even when they play the game they bought. Quite often the DRM slows the game down, as the wrapper around the executable file is constantly checking if the game is being legally used or not. That is a lot the legal users have to put up with, while the illegal users who downloaded the pirated version have a clean–and way more functional!–game. It seems crazy, but that’s how it really works. So if you are asking me how do I see the future of DRM in games, well, I do not see any future for DRM at all.

There is an interesting detail to this story. Like all GOG.com games, the version of The Witcher 2 released in 2011 shipped without DRM – pirating it would have been little more complex than sharing the file. However, it was also published in the US as a boxed, on-disc game by Atari. This version shipped with SecuROM copy protection. “Most people in the gaming industry were convinced that the first version of the game to be pirated would be the GOG version (as it was DRM-free), while in the end it was the retail version, which shipped with DRM.

There's little point in going into any huge depth about why this is all a bloody awful idea - suffice it to say that as a consumer myself, I don't think I'll be buying an Xbox One if its DRM system turns out to be as draconian, abusive and intrusive as it presently seems, and similar decisions by Sony would equally nix a PS4 purchase. Given that I've bought every console in every generation for almost 20 years, that's a fairly significant departure, but it's no idle chest-beating on my part. If you take out the ability to lend and borrow games, the process of sharing enjoyment and entertainment that's been at the heart of my gaming hobby since it began, I don't know that my time or investment in consoles is justified any more. It's terribly sad to think that key decision makers in our industry are now apparently of the impression that "social" in terms of prancing around like a drunken tit in front of a camera is the future of the medium, while "social" in terms of pressing a game box into a friend's hand with a gleam in your eyes and words of praise and enthusiasm on your lips is to be frowned upon and treated as criminal.

There's absolutely no question but that companies like GameStop and GAME have spent the past decade rabidly gnawing on the hand that fed them, but this ill-conceived crusade against second-hand sales punishes consumers for the industry's own years-long failure to rein in the transgressions of its most cavalier and self-interested retail "partners".

I see no loss of right to sharing games so far. Nothing will prevent me to give a copy i bought to a friend. It will probably mean that my friend will have to pay a (small) activation fee, but i would not be surprised if MS institutes a friend&family option where you can add a set number of accounts into a group and then sharing within that group will be very cheap.

I don't see anything wrong with charging even friends a small fee. It's the lesser evil really and prevents retailers such as blockbusters renting out the same copy 1000 times. Digital content is a tough nut in that respect. I like using car analogies, so imagine i would lend my car to a friend. Would he expect me to take care of the fuel cost while he drives?

Also i think it's a bit far fetched to call last weeks reveal a PR disaster. That really depends on your point of view and your expectations. I saw pretty much what i expected and what i was hoping to see. I was not expecting games to feature heavily, not with E3 around the corner. If MS does not show a substantial number of games at E3, then you can call it a PR disaster i think.

Pre-owned crackdown is a sad excuse for business innovation
DRM doesn't work. CD Projekt. Forbes.

There's an excellent discussion between the EIC of Games Industry and lead designer of Avalance studios in the comments section of the GI.biz article.

Please be sure to read both pages in entirety to gain some perspective, it's also a great read.

Re: XBox One

It seems apart from the 24 hr thing MS now have a set up similar to Steam with some other stuff that itunes and the amazon stores use so small hope they also do some Steam like deals.

They have improved recent deals on the 360 but that could be just a fire sale type thing for long time owners looking to upgrade this year?

Michael Pachter thinks publishers might actually wait a few years to start blocking used games. Personally I think they should have just worked out something better with stores, For instance no game can be traded in for its first 3-6 months on sale.[Which is when it sells the most anyways]

The Xbox One does not have a similar setup as Steam and it is a lame and stupid argument. The only thing similar is that Microsoft have built a digital distribution service, but they also tie it to psychical media that casts the illusion of game ownership.

You can not play offline on Xbox One for more than 24 hours.
You can play offline on Steam indefinitely.

You can not play the same game on at least two Xbox One consoles at the same time.
You can play the same game offline with Steam on as many PCs as you want.

There will most likely not be major sales on Xbox One. (GOD are almost the same price as new games MONTHS after release)
There are deep sales frequently on Steam. Some up to 95% off .

There will most likely not be any such thing as a Humble Bundle on Xbox One.
There are weekly and publisher focused Humble Bundles where you can set your own price point, and decide where your money goes in which you can access your game on Steam.

DRM is always required on the Xbox One.
There are games that have zero DRM on Steam, and you can even launch them while Steam is not running .

Microsoft services are the only markets for those wanting to get their games on the Xbox One, thus blocking competition.
On Steam there are various markets that offer competitive prices, forcing Steam to compete and offer better benefits.

You most likely will have to pay for a subscription service such as Xbox Live to gain any of the “features” such as digital distribution, cloud saving, playing online.
Game publishers set subscription models on Steam, a lot of them free. There's free cloud saving, and every other such benefits that Xbox One does not offer .

The Xbox One will probably cost over 300$
Steam costs 0.00$

Consoles are not known for modding (at least legitimately), and the Xbox One won't be the place to do it either.
Steam encourages modding, has SteamWorks for publishers and other free tools for developers and consumers such as free source engines, free film makers, free game tools .

The Xbox One does not offer backwards capability.
Steam offers full backwards capability , the software you have now and before will likely run on any computer as powerful or more powerful than the one it was originally installed on.

But somehow Xbox One is similar to steam. Apples are similar to oranges too, in that their fruit. Aside from that they're completely different.

Re: PS4

"For instance Playstation 4 won't impose any *new* restrictions on the use of PS4 games."

For it to be up to publishers, it would have to impose new restrictions such as the NFC tag chip. It doesn't. There's no way publishers can DRM an offline game on PS4. Online Passes can technically be done on every online system, ever. It's just that they were introduced this gen. Nothing new here, folks. So no words now, only dreams. :D

I trust the source, is an insider and has been very accurate in the past. Microsoft imposes DRM so that they can get a cut of used sales, they say it's up to publishers, face backlash and then try to backpetal out of it. I mean, they've already been screwing over their customers paying for XBLG for paying to pay to watch media streaming, so I know they're capable of being arrogant assholes.

Re: Cliffy B: You can have trade ins or AC style epics

^Because it took less manpower. On the other hand, technology is much cheaper nowadays. Besides, using easy, generic examples is incredibly stupid. What it takes Team A to build Game Y will be completely different to what takes Team B to build Game Z.

Yes, it takes more man power but to say you can't have AAA games that are able to be resold is nonsense.

Explain all the PS4 AAA games announced already. The PS4 supports used games and companies will likely not try to block them.

Also, Jim Sterling retorts. http://www.destructoid.com/used-games-and-aaa-games-are-incompatible-good--256227.phtml

Clifford's stance is fairly clear -- games are too expensive, and so the customers must be the ones to compromise. This is presented as our responsibility, our fault even. We "expect" good looking games with high marketing budgets, and publishers are forced to comply.

Except ... that's really not true, and while Bleszinski has actually very adequately highlighted the problem with modern videogame development, he's gone and focused on the wrong part of it.

What really infuriates me about the used game debate is that, when people bring up the stratospheric development and marketing costs, it's treated as though they are noble endeavors, too sacred to be compromised. Rather than ask the question, "Do games need to be this expensive to make?" the question instead becomes, "How can we squeeze more money to keep making very expensive games?"

Why are people like Cliffy B simply accepting the absolutely ridiculous high price of game development as immutable fact, quickly moving on to blame something else instead of examining the problem at its source?

In a good business, the answer to something being too expensive to produce would be to, y'know, make it fucking cheaper to produce. Videogame consoles do this over time -- parts become less costly to manufacture, more efficient to put together. You'll find, with some of the most successful videogames on the market, the same is also very true. It's just that nobody will admit it.

Look at Call of Duty. Arguably the biggest of the big when it comes to gaming. A veritable powerhouse of profit that tends to be the biggest selling title of any given year. Yet, visually, it's always a step behind its peers. Infinity Ward and Treyarch have successfully mined years of cash out of the same game engine this entire generation, producing games noticeable less graphically intense than the competition, yet trouncing the pretenders at market every single bloody time.

Even its "next-gen" title, Call of Duty: Ghosts, is running off an enhanced version of the same old engine, and I bet it turns a very healthy profit regardless.

Then we have the PC. A platform famed for being able to produce better graphics than the Xbox 360 and PS3 ever could, and yet let's look at some of its biggest success stories. Minecraft. Terraria. Hell, Valve and its antique Source Engine seem to be doing just fine, producing games people are absolutely excited for and love to play, despite being nowhere near as expensive to produce or graphically shiny as the Battlefields and the Tomb Raiders of the world.

Even outside of more basic looking games and older engines, we have evidence of smaller teams producing utterly gorgeous games without breaking the bank. I point you to the drop-dead beautiful Metro: Last Light, a game now famous for stunning visuals and an impeccable production value. 4A Games is a humble developer from Kiev, and produced a game that looked as amazing as it did without needing to sell five million copies to survive.

And that's where we come round to the biggest issues facing mainstream game development -- used games and rentals have absolutely bloody nothing to do with the fact that game development is possessed of such total excess that you can't even succeed with millions upon millions of sales under your belt. I utterly defy you to convince me Resident Evil 6 nearly selling six million copies yet still failing to meet expectations could be blamed upon the used game market. When you're selling that much, and still failing to make investors happy, something is fundamentally wrong with the process of videogame production itself, not the imaginary dragons of used games and game rentals that are conjured up as quick and easy scapegoats.

If so-called "AAA" games and the used market actually are incompatible, then I say that's a good friggin' thing. Anything to dispossesses publishers of the notion that they need to keep dumping truckloads of cash into games to the point where they need to sell more copies than the laws of reality allow. Despite what demagogues and mouthpieces will tell you, the market is not demanding all its games be so expensive to produce. As I've said before, the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Wii would not have dominated their respective generations if the market put graphics over everything else. People want good games, not these overproduced, pompous, unsustainable exercises in wanton overspending.

It's not our fault games have gotten so expensive, and I resent the implication that it is. The fact this industry seems utterly fucking incapable of taking some damn responsibility for itself continues to disgust me, and I refuse to shoulder the blame for companies that cannot demonstrate one iota of self-reflection. If something you're doing is not working, change what you're doing! Stop trying to bend and break the world around you to try and manufacture an environment where your failed tactics could achieve some perverse form of success.

"You cannot have game and marketing budgets this high while also having used and rental games existing," says Cliff Bleszinski.

"Good," says I. I'll take the used games and rentals. Let the videogame equivalent of inbred aristocracies wither and fucking rot.

The games ran on actual devkits, are in alpha, and are graphically superior than Xbox One titles. Just take that into account before saying "But Xbox One, 60fps, 1080p! Do that PS4" The PS4 can do that, and it will.

Some devs seem to be focusing on better graphic quality over frame rate performance at the moment, no idea why though.

EULA and Terms of service that attempt to restrict the first sale doctrine (with physical media) have historically never stood up in court, and it's never enforced.

Honestly, I don't see what reason Microsoft has to disable what they were suggesting Family Share could do, other than just say "AHAHAHA, fine, we won't screw you over, and in exchange we'll take our shiny toy with us because lalalala" I mean, they could easily make it enabled for digital games only... there will be no disc in the drive, no way to cheat the system.

So either Microsoft lied about what they said family sharing is, or they're just being childish.

GD-ROM Emulation.

I'm not quite sure where to post this since it's not my project and I have absolutely nothing to do with it. I am excited however because it looks likes it's finally happening. A user over at Assemblergames cybdyn has seemed to get some games up and running via IDE or SD ( think), which has been in development for quite a while now and I'm glad to hear after so long there's progress.

Another user, Ozone is also working on such a project.

GD-ROM emulation will allow full GDI rips (1:1 rips of Dreamcast games) to run on the Dreamcast.

Here is the thread discussion http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?39733-quot-Let-s-make-GD-ROM-emulation-happen-quot-Facebook-group/page23
Here are some videos http://www.youtube.com/user/9madsheep/videos

This could mean many, many great things. No needing to buy 99 minute discs or any discs at all, no more lasers wearing out, no more size limits, heavily modified games. Imagine Shenmue 1 undub, maybe even prototype games and such.

Theoretically you can even turn your Dreamcast until a sort of arcade machine that plays DC games and such.

Really cool and really exciting.

Re: Secrets and Easter Eggs

I'm new and I don't know if this is a secret or if it has already been mentioned but here is something quite subtly amusing.

After sleeping in the "Come Over Guest House" for the first time, on the morning you are suppose to wake at 8AM to meet Joy to get a job, open and then look out the window on the right side of the room and you can see two cats sitting on the ledge. Zoom in a bit and look to the left and you can see Joy looking agitated and impatiently waiting for you to come out.

----
There's also some info on the Brawling Uppercut Move that Delin teaches you that I don't know if many people know about.

If you already have the $500 required to meet Ren when you have to you are not allowed to exit Beverly Hills Warf and instead you have to progress the story along. After you've finally have met Ren you can exit and then talk to Delin who is either in the office or outside near the offices door. Talk to him about a job and then you can carry crates and after Delin will teach you the move.

I know it's been said many times that you can do this whilst trying to gain the $500 but I don't know if anyone knew that you could do it after you had already met Ren and he's waiting for you in Fortunes Pier (I think). He'll say something like "finally got here"

Ren...

I've been thinking instead of Sega risking doing Shenmue III all at once maybe they should use other characters for a different type of game.

One such being, Ren. They could make an action/adventure game that explores his backstory a bit and one that shares games mechanics similar to Uncharted and Tomb Raider. The game would end with his introduction to Ryo in Shenmue II.

This way Sega has a new IP (Sort of) AND has a bridge to Shenmue III. All they'd have to do was include Ren in the story of Shenmue III and then they could make a Ren II and so on. It'd be beneficial without spontaneously resurrecting such an old IP.

I can understand how one could feel shocked by the major differences between Shenmue I and II, after all the first game had a ton of atmosphere and it was the embodiment of community, people knew each other, were friendly, and knowledgeable, you got a sense that you belonged . Playing Shenmue is living in 1980's Japan and giving you the greatest sense of immersion that I've ever come across in a game.

Shenmue II, you're in a strange land with strange people. All your surroundings are unknown, your friends you make seem sort of sketchy, everyone is a potential enemy. Etc.

That being said, I really really loved Shenmue II. It took me a while to recover from just how different it is but just like life when traveling to a new place with new rules and new people, it's hard at first.

Re: Anyone else feel this way?

Only played for a week? Not near long enough to play the first game. Play it again, and again, and again, discover all the intricacies and secrets. BE in 1986 Yokosuka, Japan, BE Ryo, LIVE the moment. I'm just saying, a week is not long enough to explore everything in that game. I've come back to it over and over and am always surprised at certain little things that I haven't noticed or seen before.

Re: Project: Sekai

Post the model number. I have a few old Seagate Hard Drives lying about. If you need a new ribbon cable though, you'd be best taking it to a professional forensic data recover specialist, as they'll read it directly from the physical discs.

Thanks, but the problem has been averted. Phew! It was an inductor (2R2). Thankfully, I had a very similar SATA HDD Same capacity and voltage and everything. (most of the circuit board is fried so it wasn't good anyway.) So I removed the inductor and replaced it. Messy business but the HDD appears to be working properly.

The way that it broke off is so stupid, it got caught on the cloth of a travel bag and chipped.

Now, it's time to make some backups before anything else goes wrong. :rotflmao:

Re: Anyone else feel this way?

When looking at it objectively Shenmue II is the better game. In the scope of choice, storytelling, cohesive gameplay, narrative, controls, and visuals, the second game is just better developed. There are dialogue options that have an effect on your gameplay, you can control how you do things, some such examples are how you make money and what you do with it, pay off someone? To pay a ransom? Help someone out by giving them cash? Etc. Then you can take into account that the visuals and controls are more developed and easy to use too. Ryo isn't as stiff, you have more options on how to control him, with what buttons, you can save your game when-wherever. Shenmue II is scores ahead of the first game in every area. The UI and animations are better too.

Going from different Qrs is a thumbing, blustering experience, the locals are wild, the secrets are plenty, it's more cinematic with the first half of the game just exploring, and learning the culture and how to control your urges. second going into hardcore revenge mode, learning that such actions aren't always to the benefit to yourself or others, and the third act is a calming, experience where you learn about someone you've only had flashes and dreams about previously, and most of all, wonder...

That said, I enjoy the first game more. I have no doubt it's the lesser game when it's actually looked at objectively. However, I feel that the first game has better atmosphere, more people I care about, more sense of community and awe. It's similar to living somewhere and just visiting. When you live somewhere you're more comfortable, you know your surroundings, etc, when you're visiting it can be stressful, and you're on edge, even in the most beautiful of places.

There is one thing I do wish was different from the first installment however, and that is the UI. Take Shenmue II UI and engine and just place it in the first game and it would be even more amazing than it already is. I love the door buttons and the talk buttons and save options and everything about the second like that. Or better yet, just combine the two games into the one game they were originally meant to be.
