SII CHAR DATABASE-ALL 700 (AND 1) CHARACTERS! UPDATE 27/3/15

Yep. After nearly a decade, it's done, people :D

HISTORY OF THE SHENMUE II CHARACTER DATABASE PROJECT
Ever since casting my eyes upon screenshots of Shenmue published in the (now defunct) UK magazine Computer and Video Games, I have been absolutely enthralled by the series. This game was definitely something different. As the famous tagline proclaimed in the trailers before its release – RPG had changed. Sure, hailing the game as being its own exciting new “genre” with a somewhat silly acronym as its name (FREE- Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment) was being a tad overzealous perhaps, but you had to admire Yu Suzuki’s ambition for this game. When I finally got to play it on the Christmas morning of 2000, it did not disappoint. The atmosphere created was just amazing to me – a realistic, living, breathing town with over 300 individual characters – all with their own specific daily routines and, in supplementary materials, all named and given detailed biographies! Throw in the fantastic music and the engaging (if not completely original) story and you really had something special. And this was only part one of the saga...

Bundled with the game was the ‘Shenmue Passport’ disc. Through the Dreamcast’s internet connection, this enabled access to all sorts of information about the game, as well as ranking leaderboards for the various mini-games and the chance to get exclusive capsule toys. One of the best features was the character profile section however; as you met and conversed with the characters during a playthrough, their profiles would gradually be added to the Passport. Now to some, giving all 300+ characters names, stats, and biographies may seem extraneous, (especially given characters that Ryo can’t even speak to have detailed information about them!) but it really shows the love and care put into the game by the developers and the amount of depth to Shenmue that few games have matched.

PASSPORT EXPIRED
The Passport service was eventually taken offline in April 2002, but thankfully the character profiles had also been published in Prima’s strategy guide book for the game, so the information was still readily available to fans.
Which brings us to the sequel game, Shenmue II – which I got the following Christmas in 2001. This sadly could end up being the last game in the series, despite it ending on a cliffhanger and at a game-changing point in the saga’s story. Nonetheless, the sequel’s world was even bigger than the first’s– Ryo travels to Hong Kong to continue his quest, with most of its areas completely dwarfing Shenmue I’s in terms of size, as well as the amount of characters – around 700. There was also a lot more mini-games and sidequests to discover, and fans generally agree it is more action-packed and that the plot moves a lot quicker than the first game (though some will argue Shenmue I’s atmosphere has more charm) And what of these 700-odd characters? Were they all named and profiled as per the original game? As it turns out, yes – but these were not readily available to the fans outside of Japan.

Firstly, unlike the first Shenmue, there was no Passport. There was no Prima guide either, as the Dreamcast version had been cancelled in America. America eventually saw an updated version of Shenmue II on the Microsoft Xbox, and a Prima guide was finally published. However, unlike the Shenmue I book, there were only profiles on the main characters; Ryo, Shenhua, Xiuying, Fangmei, Ren, Joy, Wong, Lan Di, Dou Niu and Yuan. The Xbox version, with the new snapshot feature, did include profiles on some of the other characters; unlocked when you took pictures of them, but it didn't come close to having profiles for all the characters. Would we ever know the names and backgrounds of the reams of anonymous characters?

A FAN EFFORT
Shortly after I had completed Shenmue II, I looked around on the internet for fansites/information about the series, ultimately finding the excellent Shenmue Dojo website. I joined the forums, and this was in fact one of the first message boards I signed up to on the internet. My handle on the forum was (and still is) ‘Miles Prower’, as I am also a long-time fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games (and Sega games in general). I made a lot of good friends through the Dojo community and have many fond memories associated with the forums. I think between us we have probably discussed every single aspect of the games to death, but as many fans will attest, you find or notice something new with every playthrough of these wonderful games. Not to mention the very active hacking/modding scene that developed, mostly headed by longtime member LanDC, in which reams of unused content was discovered and many interesting and or humourous modifications made to the game. I still get a warm nostalgic feeling every time I watch LanDC’s Road to Amihama videos in particular.

And indeed, the question of whether detailed character profiles existed for Shenmue II’s cast was raised in discussion. In a thread from 2003, a member named Eek the Cat shared some scans of a guidebook he owned published in Japan called the Shenmue II Perfect Guidebook. The scans showed that there were indeed names and profiles for each and every character.
Eek was even kind enough to put all of the scans together on a CD for me and mail it to me, and even threw in a couple of audio CD’s he had compiled containing music from Shenmue II (sadly the second game never had any official soundtracks released).

The problem? Being that this book was from Japan, the character names were in Chinese and the information in Japanese. Through discussion in the topic, another forum member called khien agreed to help with translating the character names as she could read Chinese. And so began the effort to translate the many character profiles. I began by gradually posting them within the topic, and then eventually creating a website (which, thanks to Web Archive, you can still view here , albeit with most of the images missing).

Continuing into 2004 and beyond, progress was quite slow, mainly due to me starting university. Khien’s life ended up becoming quite busy as well, but thanks to the efforts of another forum member, Oda Ryo, the translation work still continued. The forum member Kiyuu (possibly Japan’s biggest Shenmue fan, and often referred to as the ‘Shenmue Queen’), also informed me that another book existed, the Shenmue II Complete Guide, which contained profiles for characters not included in the Perfect Guidebook; namely those for the many pedestrians who wander the streets of Hong Kong. I made the effort to acquire this book myself and make scans for the remaining profiles.

RESSURECTING THE PROJECT
As the years went on, however, my free time became less and less. I studied for three years at university and after graduating in 2008, I was working full time; in short I was growing up. It was also looking increasingly unlikely that a Shenmue III would ever emerge. Life went on. However, my enthusiasm to complete the project was somewhat fired up again when Peter from the forums (who most likely owns the biggest Shenmue collection in Ireland) got in touch with me on Facebook asking if I was still working on it, as the Dojo staff had managed to get an interview with one of the voice actors for the English dub of Shenmue II (a very interesting read by the way, which can be found here , and they had requested that video clips be assembled of the characters he voiced, which he supplied a list of – but only by name and brief descriptions. Using the information from my project I helped with finding some of them. I then found myself wanting to get the project finished once and for all, and got back in touch with Oda Ryo who happily assisted me with getting the remaining names translated.

I had also spoken to the member ‘thegreatchai’, who had also been attempting to catalogue the character information on her wiki site, and over time we assisted each other greatly. I began transferring the information to an Excel spreadsheet with the intention of creating a complete database of all the Shenmue II characters – which after assembling a numbered list I discovered there are exactly 700 – surely a deliberate intention of the creators? At any rate, after a few months work the project was finally finished. I am glad that this information is now easily accessible to Shenmue fans, and while some may consider me obsessive or downright insane for pursuing with the project, it was worth it for a game series that I love so much and one day hope will be continued in some form. We can but hope. The saga may still go on....

Please feedback and let me know if you spot any mistakes or errors, or any factoids about the characters that I may have missed. Most of all, enjoy :D

Re: Shenmue 3d/2d Art Download

Hi guys. Ziming asked me to write this because I found a rare image from Shenmue. It's the one of my avatar. He's been the 2nd to ask me for that so following his advice, I'll upload the picture and a bonus:

I have MASSIVE resolution pics like some of Ziming posted. But mines can easily pass the 2k 3k pixels so I thought it was maybe a good idea to post them:

Some examples first:

I specially love this. It's one of my favorite pics and I've always got a lot of problems finding it in HD res except a scan made:

The one of my avatar:

Rare picture of Ine San:

And what about this size? =P~

The file contains the first 3 pics + others I found on the net. There are also some bonus from Shenmue Online, a Zippo, Ryo for RPG Maker and other things I do not remeber now. Enjoy:

Re: Iwata takes over NoA/Nintendo Dropping E3?

Not doing E3 is beyond stupid especially when Nintendo need to get people excited about the Wii U. The Direct's may be better but they don't get half the press and anywhere near the audience of an E3 conference.

Re: Team Yu needs you!

The Shenmuefans facebook post churned out some impressive numbers. It reached over 40,000 people on Facebook, with 900+ likes, making it the most liked Shenmue related post I've seen to date.

I agree that the front page of the Dojo needs some sort of graphic/link that encourages visitors to participate in this monthly twitter campaign.

Re: POLL: Vita vs 3DS

Most of the people I know were able to get their PS3 engines to work on the vita after only a day (For that matter I've had the same experience with WiiU)

I think part of it is AAA developers get away with paying themselves ungodly amounts of money by saying "The cost of development is rising". So if a company says they can make that cheaper and easier they freak out a bit. Other times they don't actually want to put resources on something if they don't think it will do well.

Its kind of a knee jerk thing, its like saying "hey theres a recession" then firing half your employees, you've just made the recession worse. A lot of studios don't want to risk putting content on a platform that might fail, but don't realize if they don't put content on that platform it WILL fail.

that and a lot of publishers seriously do a really shitty job of running things these days.

Re: Random Thoughts

He wont be back. Any alternative accounts will be banned on the spot.

There is absolutely no way i would allow that post to remain visible for members, new or old, to read. With the levels of detail and nature, its not even dark humor, its just wrong. Very wrong and disturbing.
This place has been cleaned up, and its clear that the extension of generousity from us to allow everyone to be unbanned will just continue to be abused and broken by certain people who just crave attention from an audience, and have no interest in what this site stands for. You cannot say we havent been fair and tolerant of some outlandish posts. In fact, i was worried when Yama himself stepped in and totally deleted the, "If porn didnt exist......" topic. I wonder perhaps if us, the staff, should have stepper in and acted on that topic a bit sooner. I guess we didnt because there is a one strike rule in place for the more notorious past offenders, and we were still trying to settle and just let things run. Either way, the inevtible has happened.

Unfortunately we have the current TOS to play ball with and members unbanned who will push it to the limits. QWERTY, you think you can question anything we do on here??? You were banned, and we allowed you to come back, but within months, you had attacks on me, and then attacked the site with multiple graphic DIY sex kit images. That was less than 6 months ago, and despite being banned then, Yama unbanned you once again ! So take some advice, and keep a low profile son, because you are as close as you can be to the door that Teepo just flew out of.

This site has moved forward a lot in the past two years, and we currently have a competition ongoing that has been advertised on other gaming forums. We will have new members visit here to enter, and the intention is for those decent members who join to remain here and enjoy the site. However, there is no way i would want to be part of a site that allows and encourages posts like the one Teepo made earlier. Again, it will not be tolerated on any level, or from any point of view other than severe warning or banning.

Thats the deal. If you dont like the rules, then leave the game. Its not a debate either. Thats how it is.

Casual games is good for gaming (read OP please)

Casual gaming last few years has earned this reputation of not real gamers or some 99 cent game on IOS. Or Wii Sports. While the "Hardcore" go play "real games". Been given this rep as it's killing the industry. No what hurts the industry is shovelware and AAA games that put more graphics than gameplay into it(Crysis 3)

Well I am going to list a few games that are casual. Call of Duty or any FPS multiplayer. Mario,Sonic,Sports games,Street Fighter many download games. Now before you freak out. Casual gaming is a game that you can pick up and just play have fun either by yourself or with friends. The gaming industry was founded on casual experiences. Pong,Pac-Man,Donkey Kong. Atari,NES. These systems many of the games were meant to be picked up and just have fun right away. You also had games like Ninja Gaiden,Mega Man,Final Fantasy that took more effort and time and skills.

I can invest hundreds of hours in a RPG but also turn around and pick up a Kart racing game or Pinball. Shovelware and Casual are not the same thing. Shoevelware can ever be a bigger budget series but released every year to milk every last drop. Still the same game for the most part and using a graphics engine it first used 7 years ago. Games like Wii fit are kind of a gray area to me. Fitness games been around since the 80's. I can see where it would fit in. I can also see where people lump it with Shovelware. Havest Moon is a 20 year old series and very casual while also investing time and effort into but a very relaxed and simplified type of game, Same as Animal crossing. Farmville is the shovelware for stealing a concept and making you pay real money and a bad clone to boot.

I don't really care for the labels gamers brand one another. Just that I feel casual gaming itself is fine and gaming was founded on having fun and the primary goal of most casual games is to relax and have fun.

Re: Casual games is good for gaming (read OP please)

I dunno, it's just a question of personal definitions, but I feel like some of the games listed can be casual, sure, but they can also be incredibly hardcore under the right circumstances. Yeah, anyone can pick up Street Fighter, tap away at buttons, and have a grand ol' time. But put it in the hands of experienced players who are serious about it, and it becomes incredibly non-casual.

I agree with the overall point that casual experiences should be completely welcome in the industry.
I'm just saying that pigeonholing some of these games as simply "casual" is a bit of a discredit to their potential as serious competitive experiences. It's kind of like how you can have a few guys casually playing football in a school field, and compare that to a professional team playing in front of millions. The whole dynamic and attitude is switched by context.

How about we update our current video bbcode? There is a newer version of bbcode which would allow us to view videos from other popular video sites. I would personally like the option to view YouTube playlists here, because all our Shenmue music and videos are organized using playlists from our YT channel.

Re: Small Tidbit Gaming News Thread

Mass Effect got re-released on PC/360/PS3 with more content and did the same numbers. Those games weren't going to do big numbers on any console since they've been released already. Amazon and NewEgg were desperately trying to clear out copies of ME:Trilogy last month.

I agree that Shenmue HD should come out on everything but I'm pretty sure it would do fairly well on WiiU.

I know we have some coders on here, and I know we have some Brits on here. But I don't know how many British coders we have, who also happen to be undergraduate students.

If you fall into that category, then you might be interested in this upcoming workshop with the devs at Sumo Digital:

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine

I was surprised by how different the Game Gear version of this was. For such a simple type of game, you'd expect the 8- and 16-bit releases to be the same bar the graphics. But its modes of play actually make the Game Gear version well worth owning even if you have the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

It also means that we won't be able to sell off our used games we don't want, since almost nobody will want to pay a fee and a game...

And that in ten years time, the games won't work anymore since the servers will die, rendering the games essentially defunct, so if you had anything in your backlog, you won't be able to play 'em.

@WRC: Yes, but if you buy the games AFTER the server is closed (after the lifespan of the Xbox One is over; when they stop all support), you cannot "activate" the game to make it work. Or you leave the game in your backlog and never "activate" it? You're buggered.

Re: Next gen XBox reveal May 21st

This shit is worse than that time Nintendo called its last system the Wii.

Well, except for the time MS called their new system XBOX One. What'll be the next one? XBOX First? XBOX I? XBOX Uno? XBOX Original? I don't mind them keeping the XBOX name, but a smart way to do it is to call it (for examples sakes) XBOX: Durango or even XBOX 720. XBOX One? Really?

Of course this is the least of this thing's worries. Wii-U by comparison looks more appealing.

Re: Next gen XBox reveal May 21st

I can't really take that post seriously, WRC.

Also, maybe Microsoft shouldn't charge thousands of dollars to patch a game, and then there wouldn't be so many god damn bugs, hmm?

The fee is too high but Sony has/had it as well.

Phil Harrison mentioned it in an interview cause Indie devs are upset that the indie section is being removed but he simply said indie devs can still self publish those games only now instead of a Games, XBLA and Indie section they simply have a Games tab.[but he has gotten a few things wrong so that may be one of them]

MS gave an indie section and no one gave a shit about most of the games. Why? Sadly because most are angry bird rip offs or lame avatar games.
So yeah indie devs moaned the indie section was hidden[its not] on XBox 360 and now they are moaning MS are not signalling them out as Indie but simply as games.

But again its another a mountain out of a molehill by people when MS have not even officially announced anything in this regard. The guy interviewed even said they would continue to work with devs and look at other models.

No WRC you're wholly wrong and Microsoft shouldn't be defended at all in this case. You have no idea whats going on and you keep trying to shit on indies because you don't seem to understand exactly what an indie game is.

Techland boss Paweł Marchewka said: "The next-gen technology allows us to create a truly dynamic open world that features a game-changing day-night cycle.
Hmm. So it allows them to create something that existed on the Dreamcast nearly 15 years ago. Progress~!

Re: Next gen XBox reveal May 21st

If nothing's been finalized and confirmed, then that's all the more reason to kick up a stink now, as it could influence Microsoft's final decision on all of these things. How awful would it be if Microsoft were waiting to see how people would react to these ideas, and everyone kept quiet because it wasn't official yet, leading MS to interpret their restraint as validation to go ahead and do their worst? So nothing's confirmed? Good, then kick and scream now so you won't have to later.

Edit: Basically what Sonikku said while I was typing.

 now that is sad. If you don't want people to post a negative/thumb down then don't upload the video.

Re: Achievement Unlocked: Watched Television

I'll say this, while seemingly more accepting of it all, I highly doubt WRC would support most if not all of this if it actually comes to fruition. He's simply waiting for it to happen (or not) before jumping on what could very well be changed, dropped or entirely untrue come November. It's the same reason I'd like to wait until E-3 to see the games. I think we all agree their stance is putrid and I far from support it, but waiting for facts is something else entirely.

Re: Next gen XBox reveal May 21st

lol this thread has been going nowhere for pages now. Why bother anymore. Ive read what ive read and can understand it well enough to know whats going on. I dont need to convince anyone of whats already been said. I guess when E3 or launch time comes around we will see where the cards fall or have already fallen. They have alot of time to back track and play that game with us so we truely will see.
And WRC, I dont intend to treat Sony like gods, only as a company thats deserving of what they get. Because they've already said the dont want to restrict used games as a first party, leaving it to 3rd party publishers if they so choose and feel its anti-consumer I can take it that their stance has been finalized and they will hopefully lead by example come next gen. If not and they back peddle on what they've said I will give them just as much shit as ive given MS. Trust me, ive been calling it on them for years. Id hate it if they did it too.

While I understand your point, I don't think that voicing concern over the plausible or possible policies is a bad thing. If Microsoft are planning on doing what everyone fears, people not saying anything just gives them more reason to go ahead and do it and if they're not, they can get affirmation that they are indeed doing the correct thing. Either way, it's good to be negative, in this case at least.
I fully agree with this and it's similar to what Let's Get Sweaty said in one of these threads. I too have voiced my opinion and the general consensus is painfully obvious now, I'm sure it's all been noted. If their apparent practice does hold up, the best voice is to not aid sales. Simple as that.

I was simply pointing out that in WRC's case alone, supporting and waiting for concrete information are two entirely different things.
