RELEASE: Shenmue Beta Disc 3 Exploration Mod V1 OUTDATED


I am proud to announce this new release.

This release is called the Exploration Mod. It has finally hit version 1.

What is it?
This is a mod of Shendream's BETA release of Shenmue 1 Disc 3.
This mod allows you to walk around most areas without clipping. This allows you to walk through walls and most objects.
It also contains playable maps for Beta Yamanose, Beta Sakuragaoka, and Wish Road!

I made this for my own purpose but I wanted to share it with everyone. I always wanted to go wherever I wanted to when inside of shops and stuff. It was also made as a framework for my upcoming bike mod.

Each mapinfo.bin has been hacked to remove all clipping data.

The original clipping method was developed by Giorgio.
The beta maps were hacked by Wude.
The Beta itself was released by Shendream.
The grunt work was done by me :)

How do I use it? Just like in the original beta release, you can call these specific maps up with the main debug menu.
For the shops that are closed when you go into them with the menu, just use the 4th player controller debug menu to set the time in the game to a time where the shop is open!

Are there bugs?
Yes! Like all arcane Shenmue hacks, bugs will exist.
-Ryo's House is completely broken and invisible. (This will be fixed in the next version)
-Random textures disappear and pop in when you are walking through walls. (This is normal and cannot be fixed.)

NOTE: You cannot play through this as normal!!!!!! It is disc 3 AND the maps are hacked to the point where the normal game will not flow and cutscenes may not trigger. It is for exploring only!

What can I play it on?
Confirmed working on NullDC, DEmul, Reicast, Chankast, and actual DC hardware via CD-R or GDEMU.


How do I download it?

No problem. Rebuilding games is kind of tricky because it depends on the release team. Some teams like to scramble their 1st_read.bins to the point where normal selfboot hacks do not work.

In a perfect world, this is how you do it.
You need:
some basic windows command line knowledge
an unpacked game.

So drop a blank ip.bin file and binhack32 in the game directory and open a cli window in it.
in cli type
binhack32.exe ip.bin
it will ask you for the following info. 1st read, bootsector, msinfo value
1st_read is 1ST_READ.BIN
bootsector is IP.BIN
msinfo is 11702

Then open bootmake and tell it where the files are.
It will then produce a working self boot.

NOW. this only works if the 1st_read isnt scrambled.
IF it is, you can always just hex edit the disc image itself instead of doing it on the files directly.

Also, sometimes you can get away with making a CDI with discjuggler from other formats.

Have you tried using the material editor?

Just drag a texture to the material editor (press M to open it). Select the texture and go to MAP, pick OPACITY. A menu will open. Select the BITMAP option and look for the same file. Click OPEN. Then scroll the menu and select alpha.

If you don't find how to do it I can explain it using pictures.

I have a question, how can I preserve alpha channels when exporting to .obj? every time I do it the models lose their alpha textures resulting in a bad hair, it looks like a helmet.

My Plan to get the most accurate textures (when they arnt preserved in general) is once I have the extracted an MT5 is to then take a 3D ripper grab of the same object (with the correct textures) and them graft onto the original model (to avoid any deformation)

Shenmue Save Game Collection [FINISHED!]

Ever wanted to do a certain battle/view a cuscene but don't have the save game? Well then...
Welcome to my Shenmue Save Game Collection! Here you'll find saves from Shenmue NTSC version (the PAL simply wouldn't work :(, but I'll include a converted cleared save game file when I finish. I saved at the end of each day (so there are fewer saves then my Shenmue 2 collection, but the resume feature on Shenmue 1 required too much work (reloading the emulator/game etc.))

Forgot to say: The saves include all the moves that you can learn in Shenmue (move scrolls included) and lots of money (about 100000yen)!!

Wow the renders of the scene around the phoenix mirror are incredible! I really love this improved lighting!
Where is the convenience store from that you put Ryo in? :D

I've been trying around with Nvidias new Dynamic Super Resolution feature and thanks to it I have something nice to share aswell. Shenmue in true 4K resolution!

Now these are only some examples from the intro. The benefit of the super high resolution would be even greater on scenes where the camera shows a total of the scenery, like the Kowloon intro. The textures obviously reach their limits...

This is fascinating stuff.

As soon as I saw images 1 and 3, they immediately reminded me of the 1999 Shenmue calendar. I've taken some snaps of most of the months. The ones missing are familiar pictures of Shenhua so I didn't bother taking them.

As far as I can recall offhand, I haven't seen this artwork in any other Shenmue merchandise. But this stuff is absolutely beautiful to look at.

There's a light directly above so apologies for the shine.

Alrighty, as promised. Here are some teaser images of my new approach.

Custom debug value allowing for player to control Wang's AI. Here we have WanRyo about to hop on the bike.

Here we have the first camera pivot as the bike animation happens, that doesnt exist.
The model for Ryo/Wang disappears. I do not know why this happens yet.

Here we have the final camera pivot of WanRyo on the bike.

Here we have WanRyo riding to the end of Dobuita.

Currently, the bike floats and Ryo's model dissappears.

With this approach, I do not know if its fixable. But I'll keep looking into it.

For now, thanks for being patient.

Shenmue Opening - Cinematic Edition

This is something I've wanted to so for a long time actually. A combination of good widescreen footage from nullDC and the improved sound from the Movie DVD to create the best Shenmue experience.

How it was done:
This was recorded in nullDC running at 2104x1184 with SweetFX's vibrance reduction and film grain enhancements and then cropped to 1080p in order to reduce the visible clipping at the sides of the screen. Then the sound from the Shenmue The Movie DVD was synced to the video in order to get higher quality voices and better sound mixing.

A new converter for Shenmue geometry including textures


cleaning up the basement I found my old Dreamcast and started to play Shenmue (I never finished it in 2000).
It made me think about the engine and suddenly I was in the middle of writing a reader for the geometry files to export them to a documented format. Using the knowledge already collected I made good progress and I'm ready to give a first preview.

The prototype exports the MT5 models to a Blender compatible Collada import file (.dae).
All the object hierachy is preserved, it´s possible to move individual coke can, tables, ...
The texture maps are UV mapped and automatically converted to png files.
Right now only triangle strip primitives are supported.
All the objects are exported as opaque using a single material. Further reversing is necessary to handle the materials in the right way. Handling of flat shaded, Gouraud shaded and Gouraud textured objects is also lacking. Transparent and punchthrough texture nearly work.
For the sake of a good screenshot I manually added transparency to the scene.

Some objects are turned on and off depending on the gamestate (Coke can closed/open).

Here are the binaries for Win7 (64bit).
To get things running first download and .
Unpack the PKF and PKS files using 7zip.
Run Unpacker on both files.
Unpacker.exe MPK00.PKF
Unpacker.exe MPK00.PKS
Call MT5Converter on the model file
MT5Converter.exe MAP.MAPM map.dae
Import the map.dae file into Blender and add a camera and lights.

Source will follow as soon as the program is more feature complete and stable.

Shenmue II Cutscene Comparison (DC, Xbox, Demul, Xbox 360)

I decided to make another thread dedicated to one of my videos as it's my 50th and something truly unique.

I recorded footage from Dreamcast, Xbox, Demul and Xbox 360 at native resolution, removed the black bars and put everything at original size in one HD video. A side by side by side by side comparison. Happy eyeball training! :lol:

By the way this was my most time consuming and complicated video yet. I obviously had to play the first disc of the game four times, keeping an eye on the time so everything was under the same light. I had to make a few little adjustments where the Dreamcast version was going far out of sync because of slowdowns or longer load times. Minor differences were left intact. The rest of the editing was also on a larger scale then usual and the limits of the software I use really showed here regarding it's preview image and video performance.

I can finally present the video where the fortune teller falls in love with Ryo. In both English and Japanese right away!

This took longer then I thought. These special readings are completely random and I struggled to get the last one. After dozends of tries I loaded up a save file in Kowloon just to see what happens and I immediately got the missing one. Same thing on the Xbox. I just played until I was able to visit her in Kowloon and got it first try.
So I guess she only tells you this one in Kowloon.

For those who haven't noticed it yet, Joy's motorcycle has a more detailed front suspension in the Xbox version.
I always found it irritating how it had no front axle in the original. It just looks as if they've forgotten to add it...

What's really strange is that this upgraded model of the motorcycle isn't used in every cutscene. Only in the very first ones, on the way to the COGH. So since I included the scene where Joy drives Ryo to work the difference doesn't show up in the video. That's why I made a quick screenshot.

Kowloon Room Raid Video Project

I decided to make a new topic for this project as it's quite massive and will be running for I while.

I took on the task to create a video tour through all the buildings in Kowloon. All of the rooms that can be entered will be shown and all the locked doors and rooms where someone is inside are going to be included aswell. I'll try to leave as much traveling through the hallways and staircases in there (as long as it doesn't get too time consuming) to give a complete experience of the building.

First in line is the Great View Building. It's the smallest building by far and a good thing to start with.

The Thousand White Building is quite high with it's 12 floors but they don't have much rooms.
Nevertheless there are quite a bunch of interesting things to find here.

Since the following buildings will have much more complex floors I might resort to releasing their videos in sepereate parts, so the videos don't get overly long. Just stay tuned for more. I'm gonna keep em coming steadly.

I was asking if you have extracted the body because I think passport Ryo uses better shoes.

This is a VERY strange (and late) Xmas present because I ripped this on Xmas Day and didnt even know it !

I seriously don't remember trying to rip ryo on xmas day ( dont think I was THAT drunk) but whats stranger is I really dont remember using 'DX Ripper133' .
Normally I would just use 3D Ripper DX181 (ninja Ripper is the new name of DX ripper133)
I have a vauge recollection that It worked with Milkshape and so tried it because I had it.

What probabally happened is I imported the models into Milkshape and it showed this crap.
I now know this is what happens when you try to import too many objects into Milkshape at one time.

So I had a look with Noesis this evening (which ive never used before) and saw this.

I exported each bodypart into OBJ via Noesis and combined them in 3DS max,
I just dragged and dropped the correct texture file onto RYO there you have it !
Ready for a proper rigging.


Ninja Ripper is tricky to use (only seems to work with 3ds max and the UVs have strange settings)

I got dxrip133 to work with Sega&Sonic Transformed by using the 'advanced method' by renming and pasting the d3d9.dll and settings.ini into the EXE folder,
THIS WONT WORK ON 'Sega All stars1' because it uses its own settings.ini for graphics setup.
So I assume I must have used the dxrip133 Injector to capture This T-posed Ryo ( I wasnt even trying to get a T-pose lol ) and I cant remember if I used Xp/XpMode or Win 7.

Project Shenmue in Minecraft

Just new so not sure if this is the relevant area but since its about Shenmue im guessing that it is. Started about a year and a half ago to build my favourite game ever in Minecraft, I knew it wasnt gona be easy but always looked forward to a challenge. Here are some links to the videos. and

I have done up to the harbour area and done most of the Old Warehouse District also, but that was on version 1.6.4 of minecraft and I decided to upgrade to version 1.7.10 since it ran better etc. So recently I have been working on re-doing parts of the map and upgrading them to make them look better. So far I have done the Hazuki Dojo and Yamanose, seen in this video.

If you compare an old video to the newest one you can see quite a massive overhaul so far done to those areas and wanted to show other people who also love this game progress so far. Currently doing Sakuragaoka atm and will then work towards Dobuita where the You Arcade is and then work all the way round Dobuita main street before doing the actual city where the bike part was in the game, then through the tunnel and onto the harbour. Once this map is complete I plan to start building Shenmue 2 far off in the distance on the same map if possible, but focus is on Shenmue 1 just now. Hope you all enjoy.
