Re: What is the closest Jujitsu style closest to Ryo's?

Shenmue brought an expectation for me that jujitsu had a lot of strikes on top of the throw oriented combat. Looking at jujitsu displays, that's not the case. It's mostly about throwing and grabs. I would like strikes too, but no jujitsu school I've found has an large number of strikes. In fact, I think jujitsu - and further, other japanese martial arts - just don't look appealing, which is surprising because the fighting style Ryo uses really appeals to me. I realize it's a game, but I was really interesting in doing something similar.

Old school Jiujitsu incorporated strikes into it, given that it originally came from the battlefield. The reason why the Hazuki style doesn't resemble jiujitsu is because it isn't jiujitsu. It's mainly a mix of various techniques of whatever looks visually appealing. As for Japanese martial arts not looking visually appealing, that's mainly because Japanese martial arts are pretty spartan in nature and are focused on maximum efficiency and no wasted movement.

Some of Ryo's throws like the uchimata, seoi nage(the basic B throw), and the tomoe nage (I don't remember the in-game name, but whatever the default <-B throw is) are straight out of modern Judo. The arm break throw looks like it comes from classic jiujitsu. The Swallow Flip resembles a classic Wing Chun move, though other kung fu styles practice it. I think there was a throw that looked like it came from Aikido, but it's been awhile since I last played and I could be remembering that wrong.

The striking techniques could have come from a number of styles, since many striking styles share the same techniques and only have minor differences in execution. Moves like the Mantis Chop and Iron Palm could come from various kung fu disciplines. The basic punches and kicks most likely come from karate and the more fancy acrobatic kicks are probably from Tae Kwon Do. The kata that Ryo showed Hanhui was definitely karate-based IMO.

The fight between Iwao and Lan Di isn't realistic at all and looks like something out of a Shaw Brothers film. However, if we wanted complete realism from Shenmue, we wouldn't have duck races.

I think the hazuki style mixes multiple disciplines. I'm no expert but it seems like it has a bit of everything.
Canonically, Iwao probably mixed in stuff he learned from various kung fu styles during his trips to China.

The return of the original Shenmuedojo.com

The original Shenmuedojo.com domain is now back with us again. Shenmue Dojo was created 15 years ago with this domain. In 2003 we lost ownership of it and only recently were we able to get it back.

Re: Suicide

Oh dude I suppose I should have updated this :lol:

Well first off, I am in a much better place! I patched things up with my best friend, and he in fact fronted me the money to hopefully make a pledge to the Shenmue Kickstarter.

I have also met a female, and it's been going well. Haven't pulled the trigger to become an exclusive couple yet, but we are not that far off having that conversation.

Also, we have Shenmue 3 on the way, a LOT of work going on, and also kept so busy with the Shenmue community and some Shenmue projects!

So doing great! it's amazing how things can turn around so quickly for the better :D

Thats great dude! Glad to hear all is going well.

To all: I made a blog to detail thoughts on life and such to help me write out my thoughts. Check it out if you like.

Feminism

Here it is!

Surprised it's not here already but fuck it lets start talking about it innit.

So, what say you? Do you agree with what women say about the glass ceiling effect? Personally, in all employments I've been in it's never been an issue, that's not to say it doesn't happen but I've never seen it exist. I believe in feminism, but only on the scale of everyone being equal, and that's what feminists bleat on about all the time; "we only want everything to be level". Well... why don't we call it humanism... or equalism? It's because a number of feminists don't want that, they are keen to be above males, and it doesn't matter whether they're legitimately better, but because they've got a vagina in the 21st century that automatically makes them better than you. Try picking up something heavy. What? Can't do it? Make me a fucking sandwich.

Shenmue Properly Upscaled to 4K

I've been wanting to do this for a while now. The results are better than I ever had expected, so I'd like to share with everyone.

A big discussion when talking about Shenmue and current technology is how to properly display the image. Some connect via VGA to a monitor which is the easiest solution and looks great. Most want to play on their TV's however, which as time goes on gets a little more tricky. I've done various methods including VGA on monitor, VGA to component on a CRT 4:3 HDTV, VGA pixel for pixel on an XBR-3, VGA to HDMI through a HD third party scaler (the one Adam used) and finally now this method which I can confirm absolutely demolishes every other way I've ever viewed this game.

So the first thing to know is you'll need to properly upscale the image, otherwise it'll look horrible. To properly upscale into HD (while retaining the correct aspect ratio) a third party scaler is required, which are niche and quite expensive. They get the job done, though obviously don't push the envelope any. The image quality is better than displaying pixel for pixel.

4K UHD is the same principal, though thanks to new technology becomes a bit easier (just more expensive, but is an investment). The two best scalers on the market as of today are the X-Reality PRO by Sony and the Revelation by SHARP. I won't go into major detail, but both are comparable and take different steps to achieving the same end goal.

Because the X-Reality PRO is an internal scaler, we're actually going to want to convert the VGA signal to HDMI raw without upscaling. From there the X-Reality PRO will do the rest and by the rest, I mean this . Do take a glance as it'll show the amount of tech the engine uses to upscale an image, something a third party scaler simply isn't capable of.

The end result is this and I don't think much more could be expected of a game developed from the late 90's onward, especially with a rendering resolution of 640x480. The X900B in general hides jaggies particularly well, but what stands out to me the most is the color range and depth. Granted this is a testament as to how far technology has come, but it also says a lot about the production value of Shenmue. It truly was ahead of it's time.

Here is the game (both Passport and Disc 1) running:

Re: Shenmue Properly Upscaled to 4K

A lot has been said, as of late especially, regarding the high production costs of the series and many in the gaming MSM have been using that fact as a opportunity to take baseless pop shots. With screens like these however, it is clear that there was a clear reason why the game was produced in the manner in which it was and we are still reaping the benefits to this day.

The fact that a game as old as S1 looks this good on the most modern tech, from the sheer color saturation to the crisp image quality is a testament to how ahead of time and advanced the game (and the development behind it) truly was.

Re: Joel "red shirt" Tess Discussion Topic (Twitch)

The way the Q&A was handled yesterday was a debacle, that's for certain. However we need to come together as a community and bury it. Let's push forward for the sake of the Kickstarter, Shenmue III and Suzuki-san. At this point we can offer constructive criticism (there is another thread for the Twitch stream) and continue on with our own separate efforts.

I should not need to say this, but I will. We do not support or condone any form of personal attacks within this community. Let's carry on as we always have, positively and respectfully. That is the voice other parties will pay attention to, respect and trust. Thank you.

Re: Super Villian Peter Moore supports Shenmue 3 Kickstarter

Each to their own, I think he is one of the better senior managers in the industry... definitely a gamer as well - he gained a lot of my respect while running SEGA at the end (unlike some of their current management).

Being European I got Shenmue 2 (and it is better with subtitles), plus it allowed Shenmue 2 to expand it's audience on a new console. If it hadnt been re-released it would have been one of the last games on a dead system and would have been mostly ignored (or atleast more so). There was no guaranty that Sega would have released it on the xbox, PS2, Gamecube without his involvement.... We can't have our cake and eat it..

Favourite Yu Suzuki Game Outside of Shenmue?

Choose one. For me it's Space Harrier, played it so much both in the arcades back in the early 90s and again when I got Shenmue. I've always been crazy for those rail shooters and Space Harrier is an all time classic that was highly influential.

V1 RELEASED: Shenmue 2 Explore Mod Disc 3: Kowloon

Hi everyone!

Today I am happy to announce that work has begun on a modded disc for Kowloon that will let you free roam many areas without restrictions like walls, stairs, loading zones, etc.

Using the hacking techniques created by Bluemue, Giorgio, Sizious, Wude, Sm1th, and myself, I decided to combine a couple things into a playable disc for everyone to enjoy!

This is a hard release to make for mass use since it does NOT include a debug menu, unlike the Shenmue 1 betas used for the S1 explore mod.

==========================
What is it?
A modded disc that lets you free roam Kowloon.
This is based on the Anthony117 1GB release of Sm1th's full english speech mod for Dreamcast.

==========================
How does it work?
We remove the clipping data from levels while retaining door functionality. This is combined with some other tweaks to make life easier.

==========================
Which console?
Dreamcast for now. Xbox is low priority on my list.

==========================
How do I use it?
Play the disc in an emulator. Use save files to load yourself into requested areas.
I highly suggest you play this side by side with a real copy of the game to be able to make custom save files to then explore with since there is no debug menu.

==========================
Any glitches?
YES MANY! Since we are hacking the clipping data you will see things like:
Ren falling under the earth when following him. Random freezing on console due to RAM buffer issues. Stability problems. Loading screens disappearing. ETC. These are expected as we are making the game run in a weird state.

==========================
Tips?
Play this on an emulator or GDEMU/USB-GDROM ODE. I am not responsible for you breaking your GDROM drive with this.
The file system is NOT optimized for DC laser QOL. No data is resequenced and no dummy sectors will be made. Keep this in mind. THIS MAY BREAK YOUR DISC DRIVE!!!!!!

==========================
Footage?
Dragon Street:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MysrmhgeomE
==========================

Download?
Version 1 is complete. PM me for hacked files. You will need to compile yourself.

A live demo would work better at MAGIC than somewhere like PSX. The audience at PSX would be wondering why nobody has been shot within the first minute of gameplay.

The Naming of Phantom River Stone | Translation Analysis

The mysterious mirrors that lie at the heart of the Shenmue mystery were crafted from a substance with an equally mysterious-sounding name: "Phantom River stone".

Now, although its name is Phantom River stone in the English Shenmue games, in fact this differs slightly from the Japanese name in the games.

This post looks at what it is called in the Japanese version of Shenmue.

Re: Tekken dev requests guest fighter ideas - let's give 'em

I always thought of Tekken as a rip-off of Virtua Fighter. Actually just about everything Namco did from the late 80s throughout the 90s seemed to be "let's see what Sega does and then put out our imitation of it." But enough time has passed that I guess Tekken has developed into its own thing. Nowadays if it can help introduce Shenmue to more people that can only be a good thing.

Shenmue The Movie Dub Differences

The production quality of Shenmue The Movie is very debatable as it omits a lot of really important scenes and changes music timing quite a bit. But it undeniably has much higher quality voices than the game.
Because of that it's easy to assume that the movie has been redubbed since the whole audio mix has been redone from scratch anyway. That is not true however, as they we're able to use the uncompressed recordings... for the most part. And here things are getting interesting.

You see, the video footage for the movie has been captured from the Japanese version of the game. Since the movie was designed to play with the English dub this was a somewhat stupid decission because they had to work with the Japanese lip syncing of the game. This forced them to redo a few lines here and there in order to match the spoken words with the lip animation on screen. Sometimes they just used bits from a different scene, repeated or shuffled things around a bit but every now and then they seem to have made some new recordings just for the movie.

I've put all the changes in one video, comparing the game and the DVD back to back. In order to do this I had to watch the whole thing and compare it to the game bit by bit. This obviously took hours and so did the scene gathering and editing. This was a lot more work than necessary, really... Since it was taking long enough already I also didn't include the minor grunts during fights or QTEs, as well as instances where some lines were shuffled around or dialogue cut short. After all those don't add anything, let alone something new.

https://youtu.be/Jm9iK3XNTyE

I'd love to make a comparison like this with the Japanese version. As far as I know the Japanese dub has only been added for the DVD release and it might actually be a full redub. I know for a fact that Lan Di actually threatens Iwao to kill (korose) Ryo when he's holding him up. But I don't think I know Japanese nearly enough to notice all the fine nuances in the wording that the DVDs voices might have to make a proper comparison.
