Kowloon Room Raid Video Project

I decided to make a new topic for this project as it's quite massive and will be running for I while.

I took on the task to create a video tour through all the buildings in Kowloon. All of the rooms that can be entered will be shown and all the locked doors and rooms where someone is inside are going to be included aswell. I'll try to leave as much traveling through the hallways and staircases in there (as long as it doesn't get too time consuming) to give a complete experience of the building.

First in line is the Great View Building. It's the smallest building by far and a good thing to start with.
http://youtu.be/51Mb82-BTfc

The Thousand White Building is quite high with it's 12 floors but they don't have much rooms.
Nevertheless there are quite a bunch of interesting things to find here.
http://youtu.be/XxuDvVIFwAM

Since the following buildings will have much more complex floors I might resort to releasing their videos in sepereate parts, so the videos don't get overly long. Just stay tuned for more. I'm gonna keep em coming steadly.

Shenmue I Mod (video): Guizhang's Mission

Back in Yokosuka, things have gone crazy... Guizhang is set on a mission to bring justice, and stop once again the dangerous gang that's always lurking to take over the area.

http://youtu.be/l007i9-BeEU

Note: This mod has been accomplished through the " Changing Fighting Style " method.

For this video, I used a program called "Aegisub". - It lets you create stylized subs. So, I made them look like the one in Shenmue (but not exactly, it's actually the font of Shenmue II's loading screen, but with colors and shadow, to make it look like Shenmue's text and sub, and match who's talking on the screen).

Then I used another program called VirtualDub. What this program does is to burn the subs in the source file. That means the subs doesn't come as a separate file, but they are burned in directly to the source video file. - The caveat with this is that it exports the video as an AVI file (there are workarounds to make it export as MP4, but they need time to be set).

However, this was not much of problem. I exported it as an AVI (without compression, for the best quality). The funny thing is that it produced an 21GB file... Therefore, then I opened this file with Camstasia Studio and finally produced an MP4 file (YouTube process MP4 files faster).

Project Shenmue in Minecraft

Just new so not sure if this is the relevant area but since its about Shenmue im guessing that it is. Started about a year and a half ago to build my favourite game ever in Minecraft, I knew it wasnt gona be easy but always looked forward to a challenge. Here are some links to the videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2mZq_yjH-8&list=UUeTUiZDyDXbMWwK5No3Q41Q and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3e4RtKjYqs

I have done up to the harbour area and done most of the Old Warehouse District also, but that was on version 1.6.4 of minecraft and I decided to upgrade to version 1.7.10 since it ran better etc. So recently I have been working on re-doing parts of the map and upgrading them to make them look better. So far I have done the Hazuki Dojo and Yamanose, seen in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2cA69ZGNgU&list=UUeTUiZDyDXbMWwK5No3Q41Q

If you compare an old video to the newest one you can see quite a massive overhaul so far done to those areas and wanted to show other people who also love this game progress so far. Currently doing Sakuragaoka atm and will then work towards Dobuita where the You Arcade is and then work all the way round Dobuita main street before doing the actual city where the bike part was in the game, then through the tunnel and onto the harbour. Once this map is complete I plan to start building Shenmue 2 far off in the distance on the same map if possible, but focus is on Shenmue 1 just now. Hope you all enjoy.

Map Glitch - Skip floors and break into rooms

Okay so I've seen puri_puri put the map glitch to good use on the staircases in his speedruns and I had to mess around with this myself. I tried this in the Ghost Hall Building and it's really usefull there. I was even able to break into Yuanda Zhu's room with this!

This works on pretty much all of the staircases and lots of fun and exploration can be had with this.
I've tried this in various spots and I did manage to get to the other side of the locked doors that are used by Ryo and Ren during the handcuffs segment. But unfortunately Ryo will just go through it like regular and will be back on the hallway. Of course this is extremely usefull in the Yellow Head Building. Stay tuned for that one.

Re: Kowloon Room Raid Video Project

Believe it or not, there is actually more to explore of the Yellow Head Building!

http://youtu.be/jvyJPWmcSfA

The incredible power of the Map Glitch not only allows you to skip through pretty much everything you have to do in order to get up to Dou Niu, it also allows you to go beyond the 18th floor. The insanity of Shenmue detail overkill shines here as everything from floor 19 to 39 actually exists and can be explored. It does eventually run out of rooms on the 23rd floor but it's still baffling to no end, that they actually put nearly 100 rooms there that nobody was ever intended to get to...

Favourite Shenmue Let's-Play on YouTube?

Sorry if a thread like this already exists (I couldn't be bothered searching either way, so whatever), but of all the let's-plays of Shenmue you've watched on YouTube, do you have a personal favourite?

There's been a pretty good amount pop up in the past couple of months, which is awesome (as are the let's-plays themselves, thanks to both the person playing keeping things interesting and the content of the playthrough itself), but my top favourite has always been ScottishDuck'17s let's-play from a few years back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MxuPSkwhS0&list=PL700F9EED15CAF109

Could be because it's the first full Shenmue let's-play I ever watched and it just stayed in my mind, but the dude is great at keeping the commentary interesting and is also very knowledgeable about the game itself. I still watch a couple of parts every now and then whenever the mood takes me. And that's why it's my personal favourite.

Honourable mentions also go to Lucky Hit ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT2kVCR7fZM ) and AgentAnnK (some of the parts can be found in these playlists, but a few are missing or set to private because they were uploaded directly from Twitch and there were issues, I guess: https://www.youtube.com/user/AgentAnnK/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 ).

So, what are yours? :).

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Did you know that the slot machines in Shenmue are based on the design of a real life Sega M3001?

It seems obvious, since the QTE Title is also based on a real machine but it still surprises me they went the extra mile to recreate a real Sega machine. Just look at the details, displays and everything. It's like exact.

Dead or Alive 5 Shenmue Edition.

http://i.imgur.com/giIFMeS.jpg

Have you ever wanted a Shenmue fighting game?
You already know it won't happen, EVER!

But we can always mod existing games to fullfill our deepest dreams ;)

So I decided to mod Dead or Alive Last Round for PC, it is just a retexture, (until someone decrypt the game and thus we can make real character swaps)

So far I've manage to retextured:

Jacky as Ryo
Akira as Lan Di.
The Dojo as the Dojo lol.

Everything using (edited) and some Magic™ xD

Below some Screenshots and download links, hope you like it

Shenmue Interview with The Retro Unlim Network

Hi everyone.

Last night I was interviewed by The Retro Unlim Network for their I Got Gameplay shows.

We spoke about Shenmue for about an hour.

We spoke of my personal experiences, Shenmue500k on Facebook, the future of Shenmue, and Shenmue Mods.

I paid respect to Esppiral, LanDC, and Bluemue when speaking about the mods. I made sure to plug ShenmueDojo as well.

Check it out if you like!

Shenmue Properly Upscaled to 4K

I've been wanting to do this for a while now. The results are better than I ever had expected, so I'd like to share with everyone.

A big discussion when talking about Shenmue and current technology is how to properly display the image. Some connect via VGA to a monitor which is the easiest solution and looks great. Most want to play on their TV's however, which as time goes on gets a little more tricky. I've done various methods including VGA on monitor, VGA to component on a CRT 4:3 HDTV, VGA pixel for pixel on an XBR-3, VGA to HDMI through a HD third party scaler (the one Adam used) and finally now this method which I can confirm absolutely demolishes every other way I've ever viewed this game.

So the first thing to know is you'll need to properly upscale the image, otherwise it'll look horrible. To properly upscale into HD (while retaining the correct aspect ratio) a third party scaler is required, which are niche and quite expensive. They get the job done, though obviously don't push the envelope any. The image quality is better than displaying pixel for pixel.

4K UHD is the same principal, though thanks to new technology becomes a bit easier (just more expensive, but is an investment). The two best scalers on the market as of today are the X-Reality PRO by Sony and the Revelation by SHARP. I won't go into major detail, but both are comparable and take different steps to achieving the same end goal.

Because the X-Reality PRO is an internal scaler, we're actually going to want to convert the VGA signal to HDMI raw without upscaling. From there the X-Reality PRO will do the rest and by the rest, I mean this . Do take a glance as it'll show the amount of tech the engine uses to upscale an image, something a third party scaler simply isn't capable of.

The end result is this and I don't think much more could be expected of a game developed from the late 90's onward, especially with a rendering resolution of 640x480. The X900B in general hides jaggies particularly well, but what stands out to me the most is the color range and depth. Granted this is a testament as to how far technology has come, but it also says a lot about the production value of Shenmue. It truly was ahead of it's time.

Here is the game (both Passport and Disc 1) running:
