Dobuita-St Real Tour

Hey everyone,

Last week I went on a little trip to Dobuita. Thought you may enjoy some of the pics I took, especially Tom's snack, the famed Yokosuka Burger and a very familiar staircase.

Yu Suzuki: Project Berkley - English Subtitled -

http://i.imgur.com/ELyNCBA.jpg
Project Berkley is a bonus GD-ROM that was included with Virtua Fighter 3TB, and released alongside the Dreamcast in Japan 15 years ago. (November 27, 1998)

The video has Yu Suzuki talking about his older arcade games and the concepts behind creating a game like Shenmue. It reveals early pre-rendered footage, character artwork, and full 3d busts of the main characters.

According to her bio: http://i.imgur.com/C5fNX66.png She also happens to be an acquaintance of Xia Xiu Yu and drops by Dobuita once in a while to visit her.
I did not know about that either and thus never encountered that too.

Re: How does shenmue hold up today?

To me Shenmue is just a timeless game that doesn't seem to age like other games did and still do.
It was THAT special when it came out. So much that it's still something unique to this day. The attention to detail is so incredible for a game made in the last century. It goes beyond the limits of the graphics itself. The music is also extremely strong and timeless. The free music is just pure magic!

The freedom in the game may not be able to rival todays sandbox games but Shenmue is an action adventure and for that genre it still delivers an incredible amount of ways for the player to spend time with it.

Above all else it's the characters and the story that stand the test of time. The facial animations and the voice acting have aged but the characters are still very believable and just extremely likeable. It might be slow, it may seem boring and it will take a bit of time to get into, but once you reached a certain point you'll just get sucked in this incredible experience.

The game just had a huge impact on me when I played it the first time back in 2000. Like described above it took a bit of time until I got sucked into the vortex of it's magic but then I absolutely fell in love with it. Over time it never got old. On the contrary! I still to this day discover new things, find new ways to enjoy the game and fall in love with it deeper and deeper. It's almost to the point that you could talk about "possesShen". Yeah I know, terrible pun.

Re: How does shenmue hold up today?

I have a unique perspective on this I think, since I am just now playing Shenmue for the first time! After years of wanting to play the game (ever since I saw it on reviewed on Tech TV when it came out), I finally bought a Dreamcast in order to play the game. I'm really blown away with this game. So much about this game feels ahead of it's time, to the extent that I'm left feeling that some of the things being done by modern games like HEAVY RAIN where being done by Shenmue ten years earlier quite well.

The scope of the game and the depth of it are so impressive to me. I think it's aged magnficently because rather than focusing on MACRO-DETAIL (like say... GTA III, or Elder Scrolls, which attempted to simulate a giant world, but with a lack of detail in individual elements of that world) it focuses on MICRO-DETAIL. Every little thing you pick up is thoughtfully constructed. It's such an unusual game. It joins the rare club of older games (like Silent Hill 2, for example) that I feel haven't aged at all. There are still no other games quite like Shenmue.

I'm in love with this game. I have Shenmue II ready to go on the original Xbox when I beat this one.

Re: Shenmue Postmortem scheduled for March 19, 2014 2pm-3pm

It's been pointed out on Facebook that San Francisco will actually be in daylight savings time by the 19th, so all international time zone comparisons should be made with PDT, not PST.

The UK for example doesn't enter daylight savings until later in the month, so the postmortem begins at 9pm there instead of the previously thought 10pm.

Angriest you've ever gotten at Shenmue?

So, what's the angriest you've ever gotten at Shenmue and Shenmue II ?

Shenmue : I can't seem to recall any time I got annoyed with the first game besides the free battle with Chai at the end of the game. Damn, that shit was hard... Other than that, it was plain-sailing.

Shenmue II : Those planks. Those fucking, fucking planks!

Let's hear yours :).

http://i.imgur.com/OOaRpW0.png

We are now a month away from the Shenmue postmortem with Yu Suzuki. To prepare for this event I decided to compile an extensive list of Yu Suzuki interviews. Anything I could find about the game designer, from his innovative arcade games to Shenmue. This includes his most relevant interview to date with Russian game magazine Strana Igr.

Re: Fav char in Shenmue 1 other than Ryo?

Lu Tang Chen (gold-suited guy with the sunglasses who chills outside Nagai Industries)

As cool as he was, I kinda felt sorry for the guy. It's like Ryo's the only one he ever interacts with, and he just spends all day smoking cigs, waiting in the freezing cold. He genuinely seems to like Ryo sometimes n'all. Not in a "let's be friends" way, but in a "yeah, that kid's alright". He also had the most interesting story of all the NPCs, imo. While most peeps look forward to a "Ryo returns to Yokosuka" epilogue so they can watch a nice, happy-clappy ending with Nozomi, Gui-Zhang, Ine-san, and Fuku-san, I'd wanna see it just to know where the guy ends up.

Other than that, I always liked Yamagishi-san, Mayumi (Megumi's hat-wearing sister), Shinkichi-san (seafood guy with the plaster across his nose), Nomura-san (cab driver), and Saijo-san (of Bar Yokoska). Also, Yada-san (Alpha Trading Office guy) always struck me as the kinda guy with the weight of the world on his shoulders. I was always pleased to see him. Even when he sacked me. The cunt...

Scene has to be set to 80 (this is directly copied from the What's Shenmue Disc)
Note: The tutorial areas are included (the areas where the high res head models explain stuff in the game), however, the head models are not there so you can see the map itself!

What's Shenmue Area Codes (Thanks IlDucci):

LINK:
https://mega.co.nz/#!vUkF3QCJ!7YG_OZgyN61n6Y7XGAIXgRwaOOw7nFNmQ6Ok19xi1lI

What is missing:
Wude's updated Wish Road Hack

Where I want to go from here:
I REALLY want to just make an Ultimate Shenmue 1 CDI.

For the next release I want to include:
All What's Shenmue maps with hacked ECAM hex for free roam to bypass the in game area restrictions.
Wude's Updated Wish Road hack with frozen timer
My Bike Mod. Yes, it is actually in a finished alpha state.

Thanks to all involved with releasing the beta!

Thanks to all who invented these methods to get these kind of mods working!

NullDC 1.0.4 r150 with Shenmue fixes by masterchan777

Hello everyone,

The latest build of nullDC has a couple of bugs that affect the gameplay of Shenmue, one of those bugs causes the emulator to randomly crash at some points during the gameplay of Shenmue II, and the other bug produces a really annoying high-pitch buzzing sound when playing What's Shenmue with CDDA Audio enabled.

I managed to fix both bugs, recompiled and uploaded the fixed nullDC r150 :

http://youtu.be/t_ugtRweKIo

I think it's the best version of nullDC out there, especially for Shenmue, since it has all the advantages of the latest release as well as the newly implemented fixes, give it a try if you like and let me know what you think.

Update :
A version with a different background art :

new background art made by : brad86

Note : I highly recommend deleting nullDC.cfg file, this will reset nullDC's settings back to default. You also need to install BOTH X64 and x86 versions of VS 2013 Dll files. which can be grabbed from this link : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784

Thanks for your time.

Re: nullDC 1.0.4 r150 with two Shenmue fixes by masterchan77

Thank you C.. :)
Shenmue II is very playable with this release, there are a couple of issues I am aware of though, one is that nullDC doesn't emulate the arcade gameplay of After Burner in Shenmue II and that will cause the emulator to hang in an infinite loop, also there are a few very minor graphical glitches here and there but nothing too serious.
I will look into those issues when I have more time and try to provide a fix if I manage to get them fixed since Dreamcast emulation isn't 100% perfect yet.
Please let me know if you know of any other issues with nullDC especially with the Shenmue series.

Yokosuka Photo Tour

Hey all, I've put together a little photo tour of Ryo's hometown Yokosuka. I spend a little too much time browsing google earth daily, and they have a really interesting feature which shows photos of an area displayed over the map. None of the pics here were taken by me, I've collected them from Panaramio, the website used in this feature, and arranged them in a similar way as presented in the game. The captions I use are my own interpretation of what it looks like and not necessarily what it actually is. Put on some music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1Am9xYC7nk for the walk, & let's take it from the top.

But yeah, me n my brother constantly take a trip down memory lane about all those awesome games we played in the 90s that no one else ever did (coz everyone was on the N64/PlayStation tip while we were a couple of generations behind)

That's why I love my iPhone. So many simplistic games to choose from that I can pick up n put down without having to invest too much time in them. Seriously, gaming nowadays is a young man's game. And a rich man's. And an "I'd prefer to chill inside tonight than go out" man's. You get what I mean...

I finally got around to making Part 1 of a Let's Play of shenmue 1 in HD on NullDC.

Lemme know your thoughts!

Notes:
-Recording with software. This causes slowdown even if the PC can handle both applications.

Re: Did Shenmue III reveal make you cry?

No. In fact, I didn't react much at all. I'd just finished playing Spies vs Mercs n thought "hnh". Hype's been creepin up on me slowly since though, and I was just having a smoke outside a few minutes ago when I looked up to the sky, thought about how we broke Kickstarter, and genuinely smiled.
