[ENG] Famitsu interview with Cédric Biscay at MAGIC 2017

I've completed an English translation of the recent Famitsu interview with co-producer of Shenmue III, Cédric Biscay.

The interview covers Cédric's background and reasons for starting his company Shibuya Productions, and he talks about some of the guests and goals of the MAGIC event.

And of particular interest for Shenmue fans, at the end of the interview Cédric is asked about Shenmue III and the current development progress. Here's the relevant section:

If you have a few minutes the whole interview is worth a read too. Link:

Re: Nintendo Switch

See, this is why it pisses me off that Nintendo stripped the map function on the tablet controller on the Wii U so Switch owners could feel like they had the "definitive" version with no. If I could see the map on the tablet I could go Pro UI and unclutter my main screen. But no. Not only does the Wii tablet just sit there flashing a text message with no other purpose, but it drains the battery even when not in use. I mostly play with the Wii U pro controller and I literally cannot turn off the tablet in Zelda at all.

I can't even turn off the screen, it just flickers back on the instant I push a button on a completely different controller. It's maddening because it needs a recharge every 3 hours (which in zelda is a blink of an eye) and yet you still do need the tablet once in a blue moon for some of the motion control puzzles. I've had it happen where I reached a puzzle like that when the tablet was dead and needed a recharge. I couldn't progress any further in the dungeon. I was NOT happy.

Re: one shenmue song...

New Departure easily because of that one video where they distill the entire Shenmue story through that one song.

Re: Recent Gaming Purchases

I just got this awesome looking official LP, and feeling like playing the game again.

Best Christmas game of all time right next to Shenmue 1. Been a few years since I last played it, still one of my all time favourite games that I shouted about too much back in the day, think I started harassing people on the Dojo to play it to mixed results, haha. Don't think Snatcher will ever be surpassed, aside from the first Nier or the first Dark Souls or some really old games with the knowing nothing about a game before playing it - which I kinda miss actually. I went into it with the "I know absolutely nothing about this game aside from the fact that it was Directed by Hideo Kojima before he made it big with Metal Gear Solid" then being like a few hours later like "Oh my goodness, this is one of the best games ever, woah, how did I not try this out sooner, wow wow wow".

The music is sooooo good for that game too. Literally everything on the aesthetics scale for me is a straight 10/10 - Cyberpunk game set in a post apocalyptic desolate world, adventure game with beautiful pixel art and fantastic synth music soundtrack and an engrossing narrative & characters when Kojima was at his absolute peak. That game will stay with me forever.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Oh for real? I thought you were playing on Wii U my bad.

Yeah I find it to be a pretty good piece of tech. Its not perfect but it has a ton of potential. The screen is great with no ghosting and its well calibrated. I find the battery to be pretty good too. I get about 3 hours (a little more if its not Zelda I'm playing) which to me is decent for what the console can do.

I'm constantly amazed at how the Switch lives up to what its supposed to do. Its a smooth transition from playing on the TV to undocking it and playing on the Go. Absolutely not a gimmick. I would play at night, pause and put it into sleep mode. Wake up and throw it in a case and into my backpack then head to work. By the time lunch rolls around turn it on and pick back up right where I left off. It would only use 1-2% over 5 hours in sleep mode.

Its not as portable as a 3DS that fits in your pocket, but even inside the Hori case it doesn't take up much room in my backpack. I stick the Joy-Con grip in a side pocket as well in case I feel like propping the switch up on its kickstand instead of playing in handheld mode. I bought Metal Slug off the eShop. My friend and I have been playing coop on lunch now. Put the kickstand up, hand over a Joy-Con and we're playing coop just like that.

Very comfortable to play in handheld mode as well. Took a bit of getting used too as the Joy-Cons are skinny af. But it only took a few minutes before it felt natural. Joy-Con grip is decent to travel with and servers its purpose when I need to charge the Pro controller, which is also very comfortable to use. I think the triggers are weird, not sure why they stuck with digital ones this time around. Consistently with the Joy-Con I guess. I think its a must buy for playing at home though. Hopefully they add the ability to use Wii U accessories at some point.

I really like how responsive the OS is. Very quick from boot to playing a game. I hope they had some music to it though because it feels very un-Nintendo being quiet lol. When they add some features in the future I just hope it doesn't get bogged down with useless apps.

As someone who plays a TON of handhelds on the go, it bridges the gap successfully. I feel like I get the full console at home and a powerful handheld when I'm not. So far I've got Zelda, Fast RMX, I Am Setsuna, Binding of Isaac and Metal Slug.

You know what the best part is? I don't have to stop playing when I go poop.

Re: Random Thoughts

I may very well have gone into IT if I could do it all over at age 17 with no debt to my name. I am a techie and tinkerer at heart. Such as it is though I'm $20k in debt with no way of paying it back with really only one option if I'm serious about returning to college. Even with all the additional grants for going into nursing and even with only doing a 2 year degree at community college it's still going to be awfully tight. Though I do not want to personally, I may even have to move back in with my mother for a couple years if I'm to spare myself dormitory costs. The goal here is definitely to get a valuable skill with minimal debt. I wish I knew then what I know now. But who hasn't said that?

Re: Justice League

Jesus. I was already looking forward to it, but damn. Cyborg looks awesome as fuck, and he was the character I kind of cared the least about before (never really followed Teen Titans). Yeah, Aquaman is gonna be a serious highlight, and I've been saying that since the moment Momoa was cast. And fuck me, it's really nice to once again see a Barry Allen who isn't a mopey emo grump. The recent season of the Flash tv show has been absolute shit , so it'll be nice to see a sort of mini-revamp with this flick.

PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS

It's an early access Battle Royale game, I've been wanting to try to try H1Z1 or DayZ for a while but at the recommendation of a friend I got this instead. I'm glad I did as I'm having a blast with it, I didn't like any of the trailers for it so I've linked a LP instead.

Re: Nintendo Switch

He's also ignoring the fact the system is the fastest selling in Nintendo's history and that two of the games released so far have shattered franchise sales records. Both BotW and MK8 Deluxe are the fastest selling entries in both series. Its ludicrous to think 3rd party company's haven't taken notice. Plenty of support has already been announced (some available) with more on the way. This is not the Wii-U 2.

Shenmue The Movie Dub Differences

The production quality of Shenmue The Movie is very debatable as it omits a lot of really important scenes and changes music timing quite a bit. But it undeniably has much higher quality voices than the game.
Because of that it's easy to assume that the movie has been redubbed since the whole audio mix has been redone from scratch anyway. That is not true however, as they we're able to use the uncompressed recordings... for the most part. And here things are getting interesting.

You see, the video footage for the movie has been captured from the Japanese version of the game. Since the movie was designed to play with the English dub this was a somewhat stupid decission because they had to work with the Japanese lip syncing of the game. This forced them to redo a few lines here and there in order to match the spoken words with the lip animation on screen. Sometimes they just used bits from a different scene, repeated or shuffled things around a bit but every now and then they seem to have made some new recordings just for the movie.

I've put all the changes in one video, comparing the game and the DVD back to back. In order to do this I had to watch the whole thing and compare it to the game bit by bit. This obviously took hours and so did the scene gathering and editing. This was a lot more work than necessary, really... Since it was taking long enough already I also didn't include the minor grunts during fights or QTEs, as well as instances where some lines were shuffled around or dialogue cut short. After all those don't add anything, let alone something new.

https://youtu.be/Jm9iK3XNTyE

I'd love to make a comparison like this with the Japanese version. As far as I know the Japanese dub has only been added for the DVD release and it might actually be a full redub. I know for a fact that Lan Di actually threatens Iwao to kill (korose) Ryo when he's holding him up. But I don't think I know Japanese nearly enough to notice all the fine nuances in the wording that the DVDs voices might have to make a proper comparison.

Re: Random Thoughts

I won't say who. Other night I stayed up for hours trying to stop a person in the entertainment industry from possibly committing suicide. They posted some serious tweets. So I found everyone I could that were possible co workers. Found every know city they lived in and tweeted the police. Found her agent and called him. I have been there for suicide and even spent time in a mental ward. I can't let someone do it if I can help it. I heard from her several hours later. Thanking me and saying she is ok.

Even as a person who has been there a few times. I wish suicide would never enter peoples heads. It's never the answer. I am still kind of upset as just the thought of someone being in that dark place reminds me when I used to be.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Platinum Games Head Producer Atsushi Inaba recently spoke with Famitsu at A 5th of Bit Summit who talks about how much he is enjoying playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on his Switch and how it is also a good fit for indie games and for future games. Onto how the Switch fits in with Platinum Games plans…

How’s the compatibility with Platinum Games?

“I think it’s good. We’ve also already declared we’re going to participate. During the announcement event of Nintendo Switch, there’s the Platinum Games logo showing up secretly.’

Is something happening?

"We’re creating it, you know. I think it’s going to be interesting.”

Okey, bring it on.

Re: What are you currently playing?

Started playing Dead By Daylight on Steam with my brothers.
This image pretty much sums it up.

http://oi63.tinypic.com/357ofwx.jpg

If you're playing as the survivors, you have to sneak around in a third-person perspective avoiding the killer, helping each other and/or repairing generators so you can power up an exit point and escape.
If you play as the killer, you have to hunt everyone else down from a first-person perspective and put them all on meat hooks so they can be sacrificed to some kind of evil entity.
It's from Starbreeze, so in a weird way it feels like the slasher movie version of Payday. It's a lot of fun, and so far makes for some really good jump scares and tense moments.

Also it has Michael Myers.
And yes, it plays the music when he gets near you.

Re: Random Thoughts

I put up my Contest of Champions account for sale for awhile on these so-called "reputable" sites but just got alot of offers that weren't serious at all. Finally put it up on eBay and it sold for quite a bit of side cash.

The guy kept harassing me for the info when I told him he had to wait for the money to clear, but he seemed really intent on trying to get the login before that. That was red flag #1. When the money cleared, I went ahead and emailed him the login to the actual account and a gmail account I created to recover the account info. The guy changed the recovery email on the gmail and we went our merry way.

Or so I thought.

He decided it'd be cute to flag the transaction as an "unauthorized sale" as a means of getting the account for free. I complained to PayPal and they decided to rule in his favor as "non-tangible goods aren't covered in the Buyer's Protection Policy". So he ended up getting an account for free and I was in the hole out of some money.

Or so he thought.

I managed to appeal the case and got the money back because the retard was sending SO MUCH correspondence that there was no way in hell it had to be unauthorized, including an email I got where he changed the recovery on the gmail (you know those "hey someone changed your shit" emails). It was a Mexican transaction, so I ended up getting the money back plus the chargeback and currency conversion reversed on that basis and the fact my PayPal account has been around for over 10 years and his was brand new.

On top of that, the dumbass didn't realize the MCOC account was originally linked to my regular email before I converted it to the gmail account. All I did was call the Kabam people and gave them a story that the account was hacked and boom, switched to the gmail. Now that this little shit was playing games, I was able to prove my original email was the first on the account and I ended up getting that back.

Lesson learned: Never sell intangible items on eBay or PayPal ever EVER again. Also, always have a means of recovery when you do.

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

Choubu looks great (and whomever takes these shots has a hard on for Sunsets)... it doesn't look as urban as I imagined.. Is it even a real town in China or fictional? Maybe it's no even in Guilin.
It appears to be based on Fenghuang, judging from the image Yu used during his China powerpoint in 2015.

This isn't the image used, but it's of the area, and looks kinda similar to the stuff we've seen in the new key art.

http://www.cnto.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Fenghuang-2.jpg

There are maybe a few creative liberties taken by accentuating the older architecture of the location. That said, we're only seeing the harbour port.

New Screens + Note From Yu via Playstation Blog

Hello PlayStation fans! This is Yu Suzuki, director of Shenmue III.

It’s hard to believe so much time has passed since we debuted the game at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference. Since then, the team has been extremely busy developing the game in Tokyo, but now it’s time to come up for air.

To coincide with Gamescom 2017, we are happy to share the news that we have inked a publishing partnership with Deep Silver! From the early days on the project, the team at Deep Silver really impressed me with their deep passion for the series and their desire to work with us to deliver a proper sequel that all fans will love.

To celebrate the news, I would like to share with you a teaser video built from a small slice of an in-development build of the game . As you will see, the latest chapter in Ryo and Shenhua’s journey begins with a beautiful set piece in China. You’ll also see that we’re aiming to significantly upgrade the game’s visuals , and you may also notice a new character during that quick glimpse of our new battle gameplay…

I’m pleased to be able to offer a small peek into what we’ve been building thus far, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to show you more as we get closer to our 2018 release.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all those who have supported me and the team. I will continue to work hard to deliver the best possible realization of Shenmue III.

Yu Suzuki

Re: Unpopular film/TV opinions post yours!

-Escape from New York is pretty uninteresting, and even though it's a rip off, Metal Gear Solid is much more entertaining.
-Nolan's Batman movies are really not that great, especially the third one.
-Jedi's are the most uninteresting bunch in all of cinema and people only like them because they have lightsabers. The Sith are just as boring. The Star Wars Universe is not that interesting overall.
-Star Trek, as a whole, is a bunch of interesting philosophical ideas with very poor production values and story presentation. The episodes are largely not very fun to watch... so I like the new movies best.
-I don't watch Doctor Who but it's also probably pretty stupid.
-Game of Thrones is not very good. The author kills off characters because he doesn't know how to end plot threads, so he just uses shock (of death) to distract his audience. Everyone will dislike the show when it ends in a very mediocre way (see Lost).

Re: How to Change Someone's Mind?

Tell your friend QTEs are just a mini game and that the game is mainly a 3D beat them up RPG with a strong narrative.

Well... that's not really what it is either, if we look at it honestly.
The beat-em-up elements are only as prominent as the QTE sequences, so you may as well call them a minigame as well. It's no more a beat-em-up than Indigo Prophecy/Farenheit was.
And calling it an "RPG" is, especially in the modern videogame sense of the genre, wholly misleading. It was a branding that the devs put on the game back in the day mainly because RPGs were the top-selling genre in Japan, so just about everything was being advertised as "RPG." The only RPG-esque thing about it is the fact that you can improve your moveset through use, but nowadays everything from Devil May Cry to Call of Duty to Dead By Daylight to Assassin's Creed has that.
It's always been strange to me that the series' fans rarely ever refer to the series with the most obvious genre label available: Adventure.
It's vague, sure, but it's far more accurate than most other labels the series tends to get saddled with. I'd say the series really has more in common, from a pacing and progression standpoint, with old point-n-click adventure games, just with more freedom and variety.

What you up to nowadays?

Off the back of what Riku posted in Random Thoughts I realised that a shitloada time's passed since we all knew what's goin on with each other, and for a lot of you I don't have a fucking clue. I'm close enough in touch with Kenny n (to some extent) SC, but the rest is a mystery.

So for the sake of conversation n all that shite...

My fiance and I parted ways in a manner you wouldn't call amicable a few years back. I may have posted on here about that but I ain't sure. I often miss my cats (she kept em), and I've recently put to bed the debt she left me with (though now I'm havin to sort through my own) Moved into my brother's flat. Became his PA of sorts as he's fucked off to join the army, but his ex n two kids are gonna be homeless by the end of the month so I have to move out and back in with my mam (happy days...)

On a more positive note though I went to uni, studying game design atm, and I'm as awesome as ever. Not really starved of birds but eventually wouldn't mind one that I actually like, coz I do kinda miss the dynamic of havin a partner at times. More often than not I waste my time off goin to the match and ending the night in a drunken haze. Got a season ticket so won't be giving that up but I'm considering cutting down on the beer so my assignments don't suffer as they did last year.

In the last few years I've learned to stop planning for the future and just "live for today" (which essentially means gettin rinsed at every available opportunity), and I've been disgruntled for the last month about missing out on both Liam and Noel Gallagher tickets. I mean seriously, I had presale access every time and they sold out within thirty seconds every time. Touts are fuckin cretinous cunts.

Oh, and I'm finally gettin the mole on top of my head removed and Marmite is fucking delicious.

Kind Regards,
Nick Tyndall

My 2009 Toshiba did a great job with 240/288p signals and had RGB Scart so I never felt the need for one of these.
Since I got my OLED about a year ago that all changed and I simply needed one.
I don't like like converters but this thing is a whole different beast and made for games. The scaling and picture quality is truly incredible. With it's filters and picture adjustments even NES composit looks clean and very nice. Not to mention it does it all with minimal processing time. The price is steep but it's absolutely worth it!

I seriously think Mitts is a friend of a friend (of a friend), going by the description of the game design course he did which was in manny Manchester.

I'll just keep my bit brief: my girlfriend has somehow convinced me to do salsa dancing. I'm such a bad dancer and told her this as a warning but she doesn't seem to care, so will probably end up looking like this on the first session: \:D/ (and then crawl into the hole in the floor out of embarrassment).

#-o

On another note I went to Japan for the first time end of last year which was amazing, just been working and working and working since then for various organisations. Aside from that, just been listening to lots of synthwave (AKA the NEW new-wave/synthpop movement nowadays), darkwave (as in edgy edgelord dark synth music, some retards call some of it "witch house" - some of which sounds fantastic, regardless of the wanky and pretentious sounding name) and watching shitloads of crime/mystery TV shows. Life's just swell.

I finally took the courage to start doing martial arts again (Jiujitsu). I did a lot of Karate and Kickboxing before entering college, but after so many years in the workforce I felt a bit uncoordinated and too old to go for it again. What really got me to do it is the fact that I started to show symptoms of depression over the years and I don't often exercise as much as I used to.
Sure, I hit the gym here and then but it was not enough to instill a sense of discipline and motivation in me.

I used to do Jiujitsu for years as well. It's one of the most "fun" martial arts out there, I think. Did Judo for a very long time as well and took part in competitions which were brutal. Shame that for Judo the sensei passed away and for Jiujitsu the sensei moved away. Just go gym nowadays which is a nice time waster but like you say, it isn't the same as doing martial arts. Good on you taking it up again.

Re: Disney in Talks to Buy Fox & Get Back X-Men

Ugh. I actually think Fox is on a pretty good path with the X-Men franchise at the moment. Giving it up to Marvel would seriously fuck all that up. Marvel is obsessed with their continuity and accessibility. If Marvel had owned the X-Men a few years ago, we never would have gotten movies like Logan or Deadpool, or tv ventures of the caliber of Legion. They would want it all to fit in with their shite little Avengers universe, and force it all to have the same PG-13 sense of humor and mega-mainstream appeal.
Fuck all that.
Some people blow their loads at the thought of Wolverine and Captain America teaming up, but I've always, ever since I was a kid, thought that the X-Men works much better if treated like it's in its own little universe. Even in the comics, crossovers with the rest of the Marvel universe always felt strangely crowded and ill-fitting to me.
Really hope this doesn't happen.

Re: Random Thoughts

HOLY SHIT.

Compared to this, that Gotham By Gaslight movie DC is coming out with soon looks like absolute dogshit. Actually, that looked like dogshit even before I had this to compare it to, but this just drives the point home even further.
Can't wait. This looks amazing.

Re: Official Gaming Music Topic

Riku Rose wrote: Snatcher is always one that people love the soundtrack to but I never see Jamie’s theme get mentioned. I find it so soothing.

I could post Snatcher tracks all day, especially since the various versions of the game have such different tunes.

Re: Official Gaming Music Topic

Was just looking through my PS3 games, trying to look for ones that might have also been released on PC. On kind of a kick lately, getting games from that era and seeing how well they run on my system.
Well one game I ran across that wasn't released on PC was Asura's Wrath, and just seeing it made me start thinking about how goddamn much I always loved it back in the day. Only about five years ago now, but it strangely feels older, probably because of how quickly it built up nostalgia for me.
Being a game all about an angry god punching things, it very easily could have been just a flat, goofy actioner, but I always remember the soundtrack really giving it such a great emotional backbone.
This is basically just the theme, but man... every time I hear it, it's friggin magic.

Gimme a damn remaster already. The graphical work was insane in that game. Would be amazing to see it running on all cylinders on current tech.

Re: Riku not posting what's important! (SoulCalibur VI)

This looks like a prequel. Or a Midquel, of sorts. I say this as Sophitia's breasts aren't of a modest size like in Soul Blade, but they also aren't quite GAD ZOOKS big yet like they were in Soul Calibur 4. For reference please consult the soul calibur boob chart. Would you just LOOK at Soul Calibur 4 Sophitia?!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This is probably the last time I'll be logged in until after Christmas so I wanted to drop a note wishing you all the very best over the next couple weeks. 2018 is looking to be promising for at least some Shenmue news of some kind if not the release of the third game.

I also wanted to say thanks to most members of Shenmue Dojo for being a great group of people. There are many (most) gaming related forums that are full of trolls, jerks and much harsher words than that. It's generally really easy to come on here and speak your mind about something; be it Shenmue related or not. Thanks for that guys/gals.

Merry Christmas and again, Happy New Year.
