Classic Dreamcast Gems

Postby Ride The Tiger » Thu Apr 02, 2015 3:37 pm

Of course, most, if not all of us have played the DC or still own one.

Here's what I have

-Shenmue 1 and 2 Pal
-Metropolis Street Racer
-Sega Rally 2
-Virtua Tennis
-Jet Set Radio
-5 VMUs

Note that all my games are PAL.

So what games and accesories do/did you guys have? Post them.

That arcade stick, does it connect into the DC controller port?

Yeah just like all the other controller peripherals. Only some obscure accesories only released in Japan ever use the serial port on the back. Everything else goes into the controller ports.

Very nice collection, BlueMue.

Ride The Tiger, you owe it to yourself to buy Skies Of Arcadia and Grandia II pronto.

Then, you can get games like ChuChu Rocket, Seaman, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 3TB, Space Channel 5, and more.

Those cases are such a pain in the ass. Granted I'm not the most careful person in the world but I don't think I ever had a DC game that the case didn't break on me at some point. Though I guess it's not as bad as the saturn ones that would literally rot if you kept them in a slightly humid environment. Not sure why SEGA insisted on giving Europe different cases than the rest of the world.

Well they did this to allow the thicker multi-language manuals necessary for European releases to fit in the cases.

I like the looks of the PAL DC cases but I have to agree, they are made out of the most brittle plastic.
Those little pins that hold the GDs, they break of so easily. I had to ask sellers to put the discs on the holder on the rear side for shipment and get a lot of replacement cases just for these.

The PAL Saturn cases of the second generation are pretty good, they are almost like DVD cases in their construction.
The first generation is pretty shit though. Glueing plastic pieces to cardboard is just really dumb. But the US cases are pretty bad aswell. If only they had the DVD like cases for the western market from the start. Or at least just double jewel cases in general.

I don't know why they didn't just print them in the language for the targeted country like other companies did.

It's not so much about the printing but the storing and distribution of the games that drives up the costs.
Having five different versions of the game, each with a single language requires more logistic management then having just one that contains all the languages and goes to every country. To be perfectly honest I'm not sure if this is really the case but it seems likely.

Setting up separated distribution and going through multiple printings to do the various languages probably eats up a bit more money, as opposed to just doing a single printing with all languages included. Oftentimes the services rendered (in this case, separating languages and printing them all apart from each other) can cost more than the actual materials used for a lumped-together version.

EDIT: Beat me to it.
