Maximo. Because you demand an answer.

Ys: Book I or Ys: Book II?

Ys I. Because when you gots a good ol boy named Adol Christin well that then there make that boy American and a good Christian. He sa'ved dem people from dat evil and showed them the good book and the like. His cuzin dogi (why he named after a dawg well I dunt plain know) helps him out some. He busted some walls like. He's also a good ol boy.

Ok really it's because it's where it al began and he had no idea about all the adventures ahead. Just simply that. Also has the best music in the series.

Miracle Warriors or Lord of the Sword

I agree on Ys I. It's a humbler adventure than anything that came after. I like that (and yes, the music).

Lord of the Sword and Miracle Warriors... those were actually a couple of the games I was given way back around 93 when I got the Power Base Converter.
I could never figure out what to do in either one, but I remember having more fun with Lord of the Sword. I'd travel all the way across the game world to one side of the map, find myself at a cliff that I couldn't cross yet, then trek all the way back. Never got anywhere, but it was fun playing anyway. Meanwhile Miracle Warriors was just kind of a grind-heavy RPG... not a bad thing to me now, but back then it wasn't as much my cup o' tea.

V-titled PS1 RPGs:
Vagrant Story or Valkyrie Profile?

Typing above so people see OL's choice.

US version of Miracle Warriors for some reason didn't ship with the Map or Figure. Japan shipped with a big fold out Map and a small figure so you can place on the map where you are in the game since the world is so big. Skyrim of it's day.

Vagrant Story, of course. Valkyrie Profile I played on the PSP and whilst it is a very good game with an amazing soundtrack, I don't feel that it is a "Masterpiece" like Vagrant Story is. Besides, Vagrant Story is definitely in my top 5 of all time list anyway, so it's not like Valkyrie Profile stood a chance there...

Gunstar Heroes or Guardian Heroes?

Gunstar Heroes because best rush of bosses ever and I like me bosses very much so.

Humm...

Nier or Demons' Souls?

Nier. Best RPG I've played this gen. Demon's Souls is a very interesting game, but like with Valkyrie Profile vs Vagrant Story, whilst one game is very good, the other is "masterpiece" status to me.

Spec Ops: The Line vs Meta(l) Gear Solid 2

MGS2. I loved The Line, of course, but MGS2 is just so detailed, so nostalgic and replayable (for me personally). As much as I loved The Line, it's still very much a linear shooter, while MGS2 is kind of like a big stealth playground for me. And as psychologically interesting as The Line's story is, MGS2 just has more detail, more character, and more to discover overall. Some of it is batshit off-the-wall, but it's still a more complex experience. If I had to replay one right now, I'd be playing MGS2.

Samurai Shodown or The Last Blade?

The last blade, always just felt like it was deeper especially 2. Plus I just enjoy Setsuna as a character.

Tear Ring Saga or Wachenroder

Lawdy lawdy, getting awfully obscure and un-localized there. :P
Just looked up a lot on both games, and I'd say the one that appeals most to me would be Wachenroder (which I already knew a little about, so I'm probably biased toward it anyway). Just can't get past how awesome that visual style is. I guess having both Range Murata and Yoshitoshi Abe as the artists for a game will have that effect. Really a pity that something that cool-looking was never localized.

Star Ocean: Til the End of Time or Tales of the Abyss?

Star Ocean. Pretty decent.

Dragon Quest VIII or Ni No Kuni

Dragon Quest VIII since it interests me more and is more aesthetically pleasing.

Operation Winback or Syphon Filter?

Syphon Filter. Winback is okay, but the cover system is pretty awkward. And zapping people for too long with a taser and seeing them catch on fire is just oh so fun in Syphon Filter.

Yakuza 2 or Yakuza 4?

I loved Yakuza 2 a lot, but 4 blew me away. I love the different fighting styles and enemy types they put in the game, and it felt more manageable then most of the other titles in the series. I liked that 2 took the series to Osaka because Osaka was really interesting but Yakuza 4 felt almost like Shenmue at times, so I'd absolutely have to go with Y4.

Star Ocean or Tales of Phantasia
