it was a lot better than I expected it to be. For one thing the gameplay is top notch, especially the boss battles (minus vamp because blarghghgh how the hell was I supposed to know what to do?! Waste my time will ya). Laughing Octopus and Crying Wolf had me genuinely freaked out when I was playing, and piloting Metal Gear REX? Hell yeah! I put on "The Best Is Yet To Come" on the in-game ipod and owned the crap out of Metal Gear RAY.

The story was kind of hit and miss for me. I like some of the ideas but it really failed in execution. Some of the scenes were so incredibly pointless and reaaaaaalllly cheesy. For example, some random scene between those two other guys in Meryl's squad, "We were great partners" "no... great friends" In fact pretty much everything to do with Meryl and her squad and Roy Cambell, et cetera, made me want to blow my brains out. Especially the part with Akiba and Meryl killing a bajillion FROGs and asking eachother to marry them. Blargh. So many scenes in this game just weren't necessary. "Mei Ling, please comfort me! It's my first time in action!". Yuck!

Two parts I really liked though were the segments with Big Mama and ironically the ending scene with Big Boss (I thought I would've hated this but I guess my memory's awful). They were a bit heavy handed with talk talk talk talk talk but really helped me understand the overarching story with the Ocelot, EVA, Big Boss, Zero thing going on... which is confusing. Snake's overall journey in this game and overall suffering really kind of left a big impact on me for some reason. I felt a sort of overwhelming sadness for his character but an immense respect towards him. There is only really one part (well two but whatever...) in all of Metal Gear that's made me cry and that's this scene:

http://youtu.be/KG2w3q0HlFY?t=25m41s

When Otacon says, "Snake had a hard life. He needs some time to rest" it just gets to me. Both he and Otacon have lived such hard lives and have lost so much, including each other. Their friendship is mostly unspoken but really incredible.

All in all, I feel more positive about Metal Gear Solid 4 than I do negative. I suppose I should move on to Peace Walker now but it honestly feels like such a shift in tone. Metal Gear Solid 4 had such finality to it that playing another game -- one that takes place in 1974 -- just feels so weird.

Pretty much how I felt about it. There are lazy plot devices/plot holes all over the place, but the game itself is still excellent, and there are still a few areas where the story managed to be really fun and/or affecting. I still love the direction of the scene where Ocelot is using his fingers as guns.
But yeah, there's plenty of negative in there, but I still enjoyed my time with it.

I don't need to watch it knowing it sucks. It's Gametrailers. 100X worse than IGN.

You absolutely do need to watch it to know it sucks. You shouldn't dismiss an argument based on who said it but rather challenge it regardless of who said it. Anyway, I do agree that Kojima needs to stop trying to connect every game with one another (especially characters) and focus on creating games in the Metal Gear universe that can function on their own. His characters have always been interesting and his scenarios have been as well. As soon as the conspiracy/interconnected plot is introduced is when I feel each games start to become bogged down and overall I feel as if it has hurt the series.

Maybe but I had to stop watching GT as every time I watch anything there I actually get very annoyed or mad due to how incompetent they are and some of the biggest tools I seen in the media.

Their original shows are great. They do make some good points in the Metal Gear video. Stealth taking a back seat, the games are much better in their own self-contained stories, overuse of cutscenes etc..

No, it was a criticism of the second half of MGS4 being too action-orientated.

oh yeah I agree that some sections of MGS4 focus way too much on just shooting, my favourite metal gears will always be the corridor stealth ones

I know this isn't really acceptable because I feel they should probably be judged on their normal difficulty, but if you turn up the difficulty in MGS4 the need for stealth is much greater and probably becomes some of my favorite stealth in the series.

Haven't played it since I first finished it years ago. Thought about getting Peace Walker to set up for Ground Zeroes.. On that note when's the GDC keynote with Kojima?
