If Yu Suzuki was involved on the development side the credits would have specified his contribution. It's more likely that YS participated a producer who helped with procuring funding/marketing during the game's long and eventful development, i.e maybe he helped them get in contact with someone that helped them land at Nintendo after the original project got scrapped.
