Lightning is Final Fantasy's first female lead, at least according to Square Enix.

This may come as a surprise to fans of Final Fantasy VI, which ostensibly starred Terra, the amnesiac magic user who gradually discovers her roots as an esper. But Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII director and series veteran Motomu Toriyama (who came in on Final Fantasy VII, it should be mentioned) has an explanation.

"We feel that every person within the party [in Final Fantasy VI] is a main character, but we feel Lightning is very impactful as the main female protagonist in the Final Fantasy series." Toriyama says. "Not only is she the first female protagonist, she is very powerful, cool, calm, and collected. So we believe that is another attractive feature of hers."

Why would a quote like that elicit a facepalm?
He seems to be forgetting FFX-2 as well, but it's hardly the kind of statement I'd expect any kind of dramatic reaction to. Just kind of a "meh" to me.

Either way, I hadn't payed any attention at all to whatever they've been showing for Lightning Returns before looking in that link. But I have to say, I actually liked the video in there. I haven't bothered with XIII-2 yet (not sure if I will... I may eventually, but it's not a priority by any means), but I'm actually pretty intrigued by this new one, regardless of my feeling that the XIII universe should have been left alone by now.

Nah its pretty face-palm worthy. Saying lightning is calm, cool and collected is like saying Kefka was cheerful, honest and humble. Theres the point where she freaked out on Serah and left her to be captured, or when she punched snow, theres just a lot of in game stuff that contradicts what he's saying.

The other thing is, saying "Well all of the characters in FF6 are really good so theres no main one" is a real copout. What makes lightning special as the "lead" she had more time and effort put into her?

Now OL what intrigues you about this new game?

I'm just saying, to me, a facepalm is a twitch reaction to something unexpectedly idiotic.
Is something like this really so unexpected?

The single-character setup is attractive. I enjoy party-based RPG's too, of course, but focusing on leveling up a single person tends to appeal to me more.
The city looks to be a little more open, allowing some level of actual exploration. The way the trailer shows it, I wouldn't doubt if there's a ton of hidden stuff to find all across the rooftops and alleyways and whatnot.
And the visual style is a pretty far cry from the last two games. It doesn't look anywhere near as Jpop-colorful as before. As much as I defended XIII for its virtues, and as much as I actually did enjoy it, the biggest strike against it was the visual style. Call me crazy, but I got a Shadow of Destiny vibe from the city in the new game.
Much more attractive than just being colorful for the sake of being colorful, as it was before.

I remember seeing a video or two a while back. Probably one of the only N64 exclusives I'm really interested in.

I remember that. It was pretty hyped for a while. Then reviewers pooped on it.

Also OL. No Mischief Makers?

It looks okay.
But I did say "one of". There are a number I'd like to play. It's just not a big number.

Question.
If a train is traveling at 90 miles per hour and you count every game with the name Final Fantasy in it, how many games would there be?

^Should I include the Adventure series?

As for FFVI I always considered the thief to be the main character. Just had to google to find out his name was Locke which is a bit depressing.

79.

I took a couple hours to research every game and series in the FF name
Includes all Mobile games all spin offs and downloadable games and retail. Does not include ports or SaGa/Mana after it dropped the FF name. Also does not include Kingdom Hearts. Does include Chocobo series.
