Playing it on Dolphin diminishes some of the exploration problems found on Wii, that's for sure.
As for the 'fu'. That's the ironic part. The game promises a lot of things to do and it really is long, but you're actually doing 2-3 things all over again, just with different NPC and enemy skins. There's far too much genericness and repeatability in Xenoblade, even for a JRPG.
Even the item descriptions are lazy and there's a shitload of patterns leading to excessive copypasta solutions. The fighting system is the worst thing right after the anime-wannabe plot. At first sight, it's an extremely complex mix of strategy and real-time mechanics. In reality, it's as simplistic as something from the first DQ or FF. You're given an illusion (yet again in Xenoblade something is based on fooling the player) that the attacks are based on your timing and movement. The whole map running is bullshit because the game has a special 'behind the curtains' set of rules that determine what happens in battle. The map visualization of battle is just a smoke-screen.
This is a game worth it's price, but it's not a game made by the gods. What's worse, in some aspects it's actually a step back from Xenogears and Xenosaga (it should be called "Xenosaga for Dummies" when it comes to the story). I am very objective here. That's the point. Personally, I can forgive Xenoblade a lot just because Shulk is hot, but objectively the game is far from great.
but if you can't stand to hear the games you like being shit on I won't be able to tell you what I've found.
The things I love the most are also the things that get the most criticism. There's no shit you could take on classics jRPGs that I didn't take before so it's not scary for me, Manny. You should know by now that you can scare me with a vagina, not with a critique of jRPGs.
