Well with slumping retail figures, lowered profit forecasts despite less shipments, and so many studios going under really jumping ship to Digital only and doing things like locking games seems like a bad idea.
Its like the iOS market. Everyone thinks its having this huge impact on handheld consoles. So now we're at a point where the 3DS is making a ton of money and releasing stuff people actually like to play.
We've got stuff like all the bravest, which made some money, but it only takes a few suckers to buy something for it to be profitable. Now, releasing something like Bravely Default would make them a lot more money. It needs to sell more copies but people will actually want to buy more games from you because they actually like it. We get on brands and consistency (which is the only thing keeping a lot of companies like Square-Enix) alive.
So the problem isn't so much digital or physical only. See if games get DRM free versions that can play on any suitable hardware, then physical copies of games and backups will become available to those who want them. One hand will wash the other.
This is basically what piracy would end up like. People softmodding consoles, buying games and faking the updates. If they managed to limit things to digital we'd start seeing people selling backups...kinda like the dreamcast.
the scary thing is that really we're just renting out games, we have no right as buyers and unlike the minute or hour of value you get out of music or movies, games are more of an investment. Digital rental services have existed on PC for quite a while now, but its cheaper thanks to services like Gog and Steam to actually buy stuff instead of rent.
Its not completely hopeless if we resist.
