I have a question about the developers at Sega AV, AM2, Visual Concepts etc....

Were these developers self created by Sega to expands its image or were they purchased for a certain amount of money?

The former.

Sega just split up its internal development groups and allowed them to go off on their own.

yeah, sega used to have lots of R&D groups who were named AM.
they were numbered 1 through 12 (i think)
then sega made them separate companies but still within the main one.
only the 2 biggest who had traded a lot on their name kept the AM name
(i think. is AM3 still called AM3?? they were ace)
i get confused with all the new names
like who is Amusement Vision?

one thing about the developers at sega like sega rosso (makers of Sega Rally for DC) theyt havent made a game in 3 years and there still around and supposedly making money some how.
