Damn, my PS2 isn't reading my copy of Digital Devil Saga. One of these days I'm just going to get a Slim Ps2 and be done worrying about an old and probably dieing laser.

On a side note, I pretty much skipped the entire fifth console generation and I have two consoles that are backwards compatible with PS1 games. Which PS1 games would you recommend I get first?

I wouldn't recommend he get Final Fantasy Chronicles or Final Fantasy Anthology for PS1. Terrible ports.

What about Front mission 1st :P

Even so if he never played em (which is doubtful) he won't get that they're bad ports, just that they're good games, then someone will tell him that there exist infinitely better versions of FF4,5,6 and Chrono Trigger.

Your sinister plot has been exposed Segata.

(I know you will twist and use the word exposed in an inappropriate way now)

well m'boy, its time we expose ourselves to true pleasure, and give the teet of jrpg milk a twist.

Those are all fairly bad ports, but they're up on PSN and easy to get a hold of. They're also you know stuff you can get off any website easily, and they're even available on WiiWare, so theres ways to play it better but its mostly down to details, if its easy to just grab em on psn or you can find a cheap disc of anthology and chronicles all of the games in em are worth playing specially if you like what I call "Golden Age" RPGs.

It's not even an opinion. It's scientific fact. It'e true they used science to prove this shit. 90's is the golden age for RPG's. Chrono Trigger I only have the DS port. If it's a bad port I don't know. I just know it's a fantastic game that holds as well today as it did in 1995.

Hard to turn down a golden teet.

My current PS1 wishlist consists of the Final Fantasies, Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid, and Vagrant Story (I see it mentioned here a lot so it's probably great)

Any other suggestions?

Well I'm actually not joking about RPGs that were ported. Tactics Ogre and Ogre battle are alittle hard to find but also very very good if you've never played em.

What have you played on the system, it'll be easier to tell you stuff based on that.

Since Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time I can not recommend you play the PSX port first. I originally played it on SNES, then when the PSX version came out I endured the crap (you have to wait a good 10 seconds every time you open up your menu, close your menu, and enter a battle... it's bad) to see all the new stuff, but I would consider myself pretty patient when it comes to video games. However, the DS port exists and is the best version of the game, hands down.

I say, if you have no other option, play it on playstation... but if you can help it play it on Super Nintendo or preferably Nintendo DS.

Final Fantasy 5 is actually my favorite final fantasy and with that one you don't have much of a choice. Play the sluggish PSX version or play the gba version with poor sound... in which case I choose the sluggish version just for the sound quality.

Check out Racketboy's site for some recommendations. Love this site.

As for my personal favorites:

Mega Man Legends
Suikoden 2
Chrono Cross
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 2
Harvest Moon: Back to Nature
Legend of Dragoon

Hope that helps some and enjoy the PSX. It's one of my favorite consoles of all time.

Dr. Light of MMU Labs proved the 90's were the best for RPG's. However it was not without adversity as Dr. Wily over at Aperture Labs tried to disprove it with Quest 64 and Beyond the Beyond. In the end he didn't have to enough proof to disprove Dr. Lights theory which was later proven by other peers. He did go on record saying he felt the early 00's to late 00's were a very good follow up.

Try gettin a hold of that Mizzurna Falls or whatever it was called. The Shenmue-like game set in some snowy mountain town like South Park. Always wanted to know what it's like. It's supposedly in Japanese only, but my needs are greater than all of yours, so you'll just have to suck it up.
