I've played Thirty Flights of Loving (and Gravity Bone) and The Journey Down, and was really quite impressed with both, for different reasons. There is a future here.

Played the demos for Sound Shapes, Shank, and the Cave (which I just found out was a Double Fine production).

Liked them all. Shame I dropped $20 on Tekken 5:DR instead.

Just wanted to chime in to say that Hotline Miami is probably the best indie game I have ever played. Perfect for Vita, since it's quick bursts of extreme violence.
Fans of [extremely fast paced] balls to the wall/extremely difficult, trial and error gameplay should check it out. It's also easily one of the most, if not the, most violent 2D game I've ever played. You can curb stomp, bash guy's heads in with baseball bats until their heads are mush, blow away enemies with shotguns that blow away massive chunks of people, gouge eyes out, slash enemies into half with katanas. I'm pretty jaded when it comes to game violence, but seeing it in a 2D perspective so violent was pretty shocking in a way that 3D games just cannot do to me anymore...the game seems to realise that, I think. The music is another point worth harping about; really magnificent, some truly great electronic tunes.

The story/presentation is bizarre with some obvious inspiration taken from the masters of weird cinema.
The short of it is, this game is incredibly fun and addictive.

Come to think of it, the game really reminds me of an old cyberpunk PC game by the name of DreamWeb; another similarly crazy game with a top down perspective and incredibly violent gameplay, involving a Messianic-like order comprised of holistic monks who choose the main character to go on "missions" when it's just plain murder, basically going on a killing spree all around for "reasons" [including vigilantism and for "a higher order"] only the insane main character can comprehend. I'd recommend this game to Segata, since he is also a big fan of Hotline Miami.

Hotline Miami was made by 2 guys, an artist and a programmer, in GameMaker. That game is indie as fuck.

I've never heard of DreamWeb but I'm gunna check it out now.

Keep in mind that DreamWeb is an adventure game [as in, completely different when it comes to gameplay], not a crazy fuck 'em up game in the same way as Hotline Miami is; DreamWeb is more methodically paced, point 'n click affair and a bit more disturbing in a way, I think. I'd say it's definitely an inspiration to the two guys that made Hotline Miami though, if it's not then it's absolutely unbelievable that they made a game so similar in themes and visually, but hey, coincidences happen.

Most not all indie games that appeal to me are either some great art style like Tengami or remind me of an era gone by. When I look at Hotline Miami I just see a Don Johnson GTAIII indoors in 2D and nothing appealing about it. Normally if going to play a super violent game it's not taking itself to serious or in a less real setting or even fantasy setting.

Hotline Miami is a pretty interesting game, because its american 80s style, made by two guys from europe. Stylistically and storywise its a total mindfuck.

As for the gameplay its actually a stealth game if you think about it. You (and almost everyone else) die in one hit. You also respawn really quick so theres a lot of trial and error going o, kind of like super meat boy. Theres also no "absolutes" in the game's design. For example, firing a gun gets peoples attention, and that can totally fuck you in the ass, but there were a few stages where I'd walk into a room, lay down a stack of guns, then fire off a round, as people ran in or past the door to investigate I'd cap em. The whole game is a massive puzzle of weapon types and kiling people in interesting ways to get points. Its almost like a 2d version of the club.
