FCC documents filed by Sony point to a new slim model PS3. The folks at pocketnews note that the new documents do match the currently available PS3 (the label position has changed), which means we could have another slim model coming up. The new model number, CECH-4001x also seems to have moved up from the currently available 3000 series.

According to Pocket-Lint, the documents mention that the 'x' in the model will be replaced by an alphabet denoting the different hard disk sizes to be made available. Sony also asks for a confidentiality grace period of 180 days to keep things under wraps. They say that the public disclosure of these documents "might be harmful to our company and would give competitor an unfair advantage in the market." So much for that!

The FCC docs do not give us much in the way of details beyond this. Some point to the last system update, which changed "eject disc" to "remove disc." This could point to a cheaper top-loading unit, not unlike the one Sony released for a PS2 update.

We're betting this all points to a new PS3 set for holiday release. I'm guessing we'll see its official reveal at gamescom next month.

I wonder how stripped down it will be this time. :P

I would get it. Sounds like it might be a top loader and top loaders are the most reliable and easy to fix. I hate slot drives.

I wonder if this one will really be "slim" because the current slim all though an improvement over the fat ps3 its still pretty damn big

Smaller the better IMO as space is limited. I just hope it can still stand vertical. I would have my 360 vertical but it's a phat.

Do they plan this when releasing an initial fat console? Is this a progression of technology, or just a marketing play by hardware developers? I am always sceptical of these things, and have never bought a "slim" in my life, not since i own the original console.

Mix of cutting costs and marketing. This has been going on since NES,Sega Master System days. So everyone has done it over the years. It's cheaper to make and people (like me who is a sucker) like new models esp if cheaper.

That was my reaction when buying my slim PS3. When I saw it at the store before buying it didn't seem so slim to me. It didn't matter to me but it's just something I thought.

It's the cycle of hardware. A new system comes out, has a high end GPU and CPU that run hot, sucks up a ton of wattage and requires lot's of cooling, then the years pass by and newer, more compact versions of old hardware become possible that improve in cost/heat/wattage etc. It's not entirely different from PC hardware. Today a high end video card is nearly a foot long, takes up two slots and requires two power cable hook ups to function. 2 years later you have a middle end card with the same general performance of the ultra high end, tiny, cool and cost effective.

There is something about them that makes them seem so much more sturdy.

There it is. Kinda ugly but I will take it for being a top loader
