I got that version when it came out.
Played it through, no problem. If you want to 100% it, though, you might need a FAQ because some slight menus aren't in english, but I'd say that playing the first time, like Shenmue, you should just wander freely and worry about seeing everything you missed the next time you play it.
I am quite looking forward to a western release of the PS3 version though, director's version or not. Thought that would have been underway by now. I wouldn't know what a director's version could entail though.
