Personally, I really like art we got, they're all pretty good though.

Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance (PS2)

Japan box art:

EU box art:

Again, I really like our box art as opposed to the ones for Japan and the US; the blood on the main character's knuckles are subtle rather than the US ugly box art with a weird colour palette.

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2)

EU box art:

This, on the other hand...ugh. It's not even close; Ayami Kojima's artwork >>> badly composed CG art placed awkwardly on to box art "tearing off the page" with the use of the whip.

The King of Fighters '99 Evolution

Japanese release from 1999:

Japanese re-release from 2001:

This is yet another of those cases where the US publisher decided to make a piss-poor job with filtering the original Japanese cover for reasons unknown (probably just bad taste of some prick). Also, the zooming on K' face absolutely destroys the awesome original composition. The re-release artwork is so badass that I would buy they game just for the cover.

Check out this post I made about how Japanese book covers are better a lot of times too.

^To be honest, it seems that the US (and EU, but to a lesser extent) publishers assume that their audience is way dumber.

I think they are more paranoid that they need a more flashier, eye catching, stimulating, "dumbed down" cover (mix and match any of those btw) to appeal to the rare few that buy a game based on its packaging which I am sure not many people do. The people that make these decisions probably just want to extra careful and try to send subliminal messages through our brains. but usually the japanese packaging is perfectly acceptable and could be used is all territories. But sometimes its also fun to have all of the packages be different so can debate which the superior one is.

They just think that their audience is dumber and go from there. The original cover shouldn't be changed because it's a part of the creative vision for a given product. Foreign publishers just fuck it all up with their idiotic marketing guidelines.
