Sony suing Jerry Lambert AKA Kevin Butler

Following a bizarre turn of events and a highly unlikely TV commercial, actor Jerry Lambert - for years the "face" of the PlayStation brand - is being sued by none other than Sony itself.

Despite having made something of a name for himself playing the fictional PlayStation executive Kevin Butler, last month Lambert appeared in an advertisement for Bridgestone tyres playing a competitor's product, the Nintendo Wii.
Strangely, the commercial was later edited to remove Lambert from it entirely. Which seemed weird, but it may be explained by the fact that on September 11, Sony Computer Entertainment America filed a suit (spotted by gumby_trucker @ NeoGAF) against both Bridgestone and Wildcat Creek, a company registered in 2007 by...Jerry Lambert.

Sony is suing both companies over trademark infringement, presumably for their use of Lambert in a scenario involving video games that aren't PlayStation games.

We've contacted both Sony and Bridgestone for comment on the specifics of the case, and will update if we hear back.

He was released from his contract by Sony a little while back. I saw the original ad and he never speaks as KB

New version of the ad

Oh i must have seen a shorter version. But still his not talking like KB IMO and this is still lame on Sony's part.

Hell they always said they didn't see the Wii as competition ;-)

Sony is apparently suing for trademark reasons. Seriously? Like they own him? He isn't under contract. Sony must be desperate for cash after all they have lost on PS3 and Vita selling so poor(yet I plan to get one)

He would be under contract. His contract would have a stipulation barring him from appearing to advertise competitor's products. In this case, Wii.

And that's the point of the lawsuit. It's a competing product whether an outdated Phil Harrison quote says so or not.

But he isn't under contract which means he is free to take work wherever the fuck he wants.
If you worked at Wal mart for a few years but get fired so a few weeks later you work at Target they can't sue you.

If his contract said he couldn't do commercials involving a competing game console ever then yeah he could be in trouble or it could just be the ad was clearly using his KB character to get attention.
