I totally understand if the first game turns people off. Honestly, it is kind of slow-going and plodding. The rest of the games speed things up, add actual cinematography to the story scenes, inject a far greater amount of color to the visuals, and aren't quite as "gloom and doom," personality-wise. The first game may as well have been a beta, while the rest of the series is what it should have always been.
It's just a matter of actually getting past the first step.

I'm considering starting off with AC3, if I understand the concept correctly this wouldn't really be a problem would it?

And we are getting the updated version in the west, not sure if Iwould prefer the first version to the second or not... either I have the CE pre-ordered over here, it comes out in feb.
