Deadly premonition is awesome, really flawed, but it's a love or hate thing. If you like the characters, it's humor and it's atmossphere, you'll love it. It has also a pretty strong narrative.
The combat sucks balls, and pc version was not well optimized (and in some cases there were a lot of crashes), so you'll probably have to find the fixes online.
But the game is different and a unique experience. About "open world", it's pretty big, not the type of open world like GTA, but medium size without "havok all in between".
