The current Project Morpheus devkit includes the following functionality:

1080p display
90+ degree field of view
100hz tracking
3 meter working volume
Full 360 degrees
Supports forward prediction
Works if you wear glasses
Current iteration is wired
DualShock 4 and PS Move detection with same camera
Fully adjustable
It's name is not reference to The Matrix, but rather the Greek God of Dreams
Supports custom headphones and wireless headsets

Thoughts?
I mean we all knew it was coming eventually right? I just didnt think we'd be getting to it until PS5.
Still though, im interested in trying it out someday.

At the moment VR does nothing for me but I would at least try it out.

It's exciting I just hope we see games other than FPS's used for it. That's the easy route for developers to take but I'll be interested when we see the types of games built from the ground up that make the most of it. Something like a Silent Hill type game would be cool but I'm looking forward to seeing something that we've never seen done before.

A friend of mine got a dev kit of the oculus rift and he said it was amazing. Here is some more info on it below. Also its no secret sony was working on this, but i havent seen it with the PS branding on it yet, nor heard what console it was gonna be for, hopefully its awesome.

I was hoping to see a price+release date but given it was unveiled at a developer conference, it makes sense. I just hope it becomes retail sooner rather than later.

I think it's exciting and I can't wait to dive in.

I honestly can't wait. I can't vouch for the Sony tech (but I have complete faith in them, and will purchase it) but the Oculus Rift is no joke. It's not a gimmick like some people, myself included, initially wrote it off as. It's come a long way in a short time, and I can't wait to get my hands on the retail release when it happens. A guy I work with has a Dev kit, and even though its just tech demos I've messed around with it's going to be a game changer when it hits. I think the SONY VR set will do better than the Microsoft one, simply due the power. As with anything in 3D, you have to output a constant 60 fps to SEE 30 fps in game. Same image produced separately at 30 fps for each eye. I honestly wonder if either SONY or MS will end up violating some kind of patent in the process. It's also great that this kind of tech is being seen on all platforms regardless of eventual quality. It just goes to show our hobby isn't hiding anymore, and the companies aren't afraid to take risks like this.

The first game I want to play is Portal 2.

Unfortunately, I think that the technology's potential will be squandered with just loads of FPS games. A first person brawler or a first person adventure game is what I want to see. Or even a first person game where you are piloting something, sort of like a Steel Battalion style game.

Also, lots and lots of horror games that utilise this tech. But I predict like 90% of the games made specifically for it will be shooters [and just for the record, I really like shooters]. Would love to be wrong though.

Horror could be very cool.

But yeah I see lots of shooters coming but we should wait and see.

You should look up Valkyrie, first person space flight set in the EVE universe. That's the game I'm most excited about that's using the tech. I think the FPS fad will fade quickly on VR sets, if it even becomes one. Simply because you lose all precise control using them. No more precision aiming with m/kb or controllers, and that's pretty much required for MP which sells FPS games. Hopefully we do see more action/adventures titles like you say because that's what I would want out of it. Or a new SP MechWarrior game using it.

While it looks sleek and sexy, I'm a little weary of the whole VR craze. If I turn around twice in my kitchen I get dizzy, so I can only imagine what this would do to me. Plus I think I'll look like an idiot while playing it.

^Holy crap its JC Denton.

My worry is that it will actually take off TOO MUCH. To the point we are addicted to it beyond reality and the Matrix becomes a reality. Dont do it guys!

My guess is PS4 will get a price drop to coincide with this thing. Having a $400 PS4 and a $200-400 Headset isnt exactly accesable to everyone. I bet PS4 will be 300 and the headset around 300 aswell.

from a technological perspective this is outstanding! very impressive! from a consumer perspective this has got be the dumbest shit i have ever seen! this takes nerdism to a whole new level. you'll be playing this with headphones on while armed men break into your house rape your wife and steal your coffee table thats right in front of you. (they better not touch my holographic charizard...you can have my wife and coffee table but charizard is where i draw the line) Id be embarrassed to tell my kids "owe yeah sure we'll go as soon as im done playing this game aka being/ looking like a fucking idiot" at least when you play on a tv you are still in touch with reality. this is just pathetic
