I loved grim fandango's world, really creative stuff.

Also loved Culpa Innata's totalitarian selfish world.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mass Effect. I throughly enjoyed the lore even the codex; which was a very nice touch. They could go in so many different directions with the franchise in the future based on that alone. The First Contact War comes to mind. I wouldn't call it my favorite lore in games but I enjoy it quite a bit. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it in ME Andromeda.

I loved Mass Effect, but the codex bored me. I listened to all the audio entries just in case I needed to know summat, but other than that it was just too overwhelming to interest me. Especially the planet bios. Much like Deus Ex: HR and Splinter Cell, I was much more interested in the personal logs and emails on the terminals.

Honestly, I can't think of a single game where I really cared about the lore. In my experience, most of it is boring/convoluted/uninspired. I'm more interested in characters and environments. Although, some games have led me to become more interested in real world places and events.

EDIT: I guess it was fun to read the notes in classic resident evil games.

Probably the Deus Ex series for me. Deus Ex was my favorite game ever before I really got into Shenmue, and I've always loved simply reading newspapers and data logs and stuff in the game, even if it isn't important.

Blood Omen and Soul Reaver

The lore was deep af in this game. The story was amazing, too.

Rarely do you see two series (one borned from the other) interconnect seemlessly like this one did.

I have become an Elder Scrolls Loremaster. By the time I got to Skyrim, I totally stopped making characters that actually quest. I just collect books, read, and store them in safe places.

Nah, I also got incredibly bored with skyrim after 20 minutes.

Apart from the main story in games I usually don't really care.

When I used to play online games as a kid, I was always sure to avoid quests and instead needlessly hoard items until I almost completely controlled the market. Incredibly rich with nothing worthwhile to spend it on -- because most items were geared towards being successful as "one who quests". My virtual self was most likely depressed but no NPC ever bothered to ask him what was wrong.

Elder Scrolls, Zelda, Mass Effect, Shenmue

I second Resident Evil as well, even if it may be a little campy.

I would say Metroid, but the lore outside of the main games isn't really developed much.

Star Wars would top the list if it counted. (KOTOR, Jedi Knight, SWG)

Great thread BTW.

I know so much about Kingdom Hearts that I'm amazed I've seen a woman naked.

Final Fantasy comes to mind. The entire Xeno games series comes to mind. Suikoden comes to mind. Metal Gear comes to mind. Not sure which exactly is my favorite.

Final Fantasy VII-X I feel I know a lot about and many of the backstories.

XII was a game that about a year after I beat it I had forgot about 90% of what happened. I wouldn't even be able to tell you the name of 50% of the main characters off the top of my head. Although I feel the same about any of the Final Fantasy VII spin off games. I don't remember a single plot point of Dirge of Cerberus and anything I remember from Crisis Core is stuff that was already known in FFVII.

Meh.. Cannot be bothered to even check to see if anyone mentioned Dark Soul's lore. Considering lore means knowledge handed down on a subject. Dark Souls has so much to it and suprisingly it was the one to actually intrest me further enough to the point where I'm like "Yeah, this is good" It's a brilliant game all round too. 2nd game never played it as it's no way better than the masterpiece original IMO.
