Video game urban legends from your childhood

Postby ShenGCH » Thu Sep 01, 2016 12:16 am

So, what are some of your favourite video game-related urban legends you remember from your childhood - whether they were simple playground rumours between your friends or commonplace legends that spread like wildfire?

I distinctly remember a friend of mine, with whom I shared an obsession of WWF: Attitude, telling me that if you held the Select button on the PlayStation controller the second Stone Cold Steve Austin's entrance music played, he would come crashing down to the ring in his monster truck. Never happened, of course, but that one has always stuck in my mind :)

If you hold down + B you have a better chance of catching Pokemon.

Lara Croft naked shower scene. Even if it did exist we may as well have just bashed off to pictures of the pyramids in Giza.

I'm sure we all heard about the impending Nintega merger. Doesn't seem quite so ridiculous now.

I took great delight in telling my friend, over and over again, that if he jumped far enough to the right in a certain part of Sonic 1 for the Master System, he would clear the spikes and find an extra life. (Even if he eventually had, it wouldn't have been worth the failed attempts.)

If you're talking about the first level I'm pretty sure that was true to a degee. I specifically remember (on multiple occassions) going faster than the camera could keep up with (which I presume was intentional), and getting an extra life after passing the sign post at the end. It honestly wasn't that difficult.

To get mew you must teach all your pokemon strength then push the truck parked next to the S.S. Anne and he will appear.

Classic. Though it still doesn't explain why the fuck that truck was there.

No, not the Green Hill Act 1 glitch.

This was in Act 3, down the second pit, where you do find an extra life but then there's an impassable floor of spikes to your right. I completely made up the claim of another life on the far side of them, just so I could giggle at his doomed leaps of faith.

Yup those dreams became true. It's even possible with the official systems nowadays.

I can't quite remember any general legend from back in the day. But during the Mega Drive days, when I was crazy about playing all Sonic games there were, my friends used to fool me with stuff they made up. Titles like "Sonic and Power" or "Sonic and Friends". The former didn't include any facts but I vividly remember when they had "exact" details about the latter, complete with how the controls work.

It was a game where you play with Sonic but at certain points in the level there would be obstacles he couldn't overcome. Pressing B you would call the friends and they would break walls or help him up an unreachable plattform.
They even promised me that one guy had this game and they would loan it so I can play it. I waited for it, and I dreamed about the gameplay. I even wrote down everything I got told about it. Man how naive I was...
But at least they predicted Sonic Heroes almost 10 years before it came into existance. :rotflmao:

I used to like the bs rumors and cheats that used to appear on this site and ones like it. Lan Di burning down the Dojo or codes to get Ryo a gun. Some people actually used to believe you could beat Chai at the You Arcade wahahaha

Anyone remember Flareth and Mewthree? Man, the Pokémon urban legends were some of the best as a kid.
