Shenmue inspired game developer closes

So the makers of Sleeping Dogs the closest thing we had to a Shenmue sequel in the intervening years looks like it's closing down.

A shame since I enjoyed Sleeping Dogs. It's combat system was reminiscent of the 70 man battle. However, when I heard United Front Games were developing an MMO based off Sleeping Dogs I couldn't help but feel it was just the wrong move to make. A few months ago that MMO, Triad Wars was canned after a number of years in development. Would have been writing on the wall...

Always sad to see developers go belly up.

How is Sleeping Dogs Shenmue-inspired? It's a typical open world game that tried to set itself apart from the competition by being set in a more exotic location. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing it, but not once did I get anything close to something you could call 'Shenmue-vibes' from it.

I think the so-called 'Shenmue inspiration' comes from those who are desperate to find comparisons between the two with very little evidence besides meaningless, surface stuff. I've said it before, but the only reasonable comparisons between the two lies in the fact they're both set in Hong Kong and there's fighting. Aside from that, they're night and day. The more reasonable comparison is Yakuza.

Regardless, Sleeping Dogs was really great, and it's a shame the studio are closing down. Best of luck to them all.
