The free dictionary disagrees with you http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Subverse and even if it's not a word, it doesn't matter, as they'll know what I mean and probably convince themselves that it is a word.

I decided to heed your advise and did not use the word subverse, I went for the more quotidian subvert in the end, just in case the free dictionary is perhaps less than irrefutable.

I actually got refused to buy a video game for the first time ever today. It was tomb raider which is an 18. Funny thing is, that it is a small independent retailer that asked me for ID, you'd think theyd take all the money they could get. I have bought countless 18+ from GAME before, even preordered GTAV.

I am 20 and at uni and I didn't have my provisional driving license on me at the time so only had my student card which generally shows I am at least 18. Was very surprised considering it was a small independent retailer who I do try and support rather than going to chains though this is not the first time they have stung me as they sold me a faulty XBOX charger cable and refused to refund me because i'd lost the receipt(and I remember all the reciept had on it was how much it costed because they hadn't added it to their stock as I'd just enquired about buying it as it was left on the side ready to be priced)The woman clearly remembered me though.

In a similar sort of way, I went into both Boots and Superdrug looking to buy an e-cig a while ago, a proper one rather than those petrol station jobs. Both shops didn't have any, and the people that worked there told me to look online! No wonder the "high street" is suffering. I do usually buy a lot of stuff online anyway, but on this occasion where I actually wanted to get a look at something, I'm pointed back in the direction I came.
